22 | March 8, 2018 | The winnetka Current sound off winnetkacurrent.com Back In The Day When Nike missiles were the last line of defense on the North Shore Peter Butler, Contributing Columnist, Winnetka Historical Society Board Member During the last year, the threat of a nuclear attack by North Korea has created speculation and fear among many as to the possibility of a nuclear incident. For some, tensions seem to be at an all-time high, and yet, did you know that 60 years ago, during the Cold War, this country felt this threat much more visibly? In Winnetka’s backyard, the Skokie Lagoons — a Nike missile site — was fully operational to serve as a last line of defense against nucleararmed Russian bombers. Across the nation, and right here in the Winnetka schools, students regularly drilled the duck and cover exercise, as if hiding under one’s desk was likely to minimize the impact of a nuclear bomb. To counter the threat of a Soviet nucleararmed bomber, in the early 1950s, the U.S. mounted the large scale, anti-aircraft Nike missile program with more than 300 sites across the country. Chicagoland turned out to have more sites (a total of 22) than any other metropolitan area in the country. One reason was that Chicago was a major commercial and industrial center. A second reason was its proximity to Lake Michigan. The Soviet bombers were expected to fly over the North Pole, across Canada, and straight down Lake Michigan, making planes difficult to detect due to the limited range of the radar technology available. And so, three sites were located on the lakefront, with many others close to the lake. Just north of Tower Road, 80-foot long missiles were in position should a Soviet invasion be detected. They were put in place in 1955. The lagoons housed the missiles and radar facilities which were manned around the clock. In the late 1950s, the Soviets developed intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs), which could travel 3,000 miles. The radar and Nike missile technology was no match for the ICBMs, making their defense capabilities virtually obsolete. Nevertheless, it took until the 1970s to wind down the program because it had become a big jobs creator. The site in the Skokie Lagoons, which was visible from the Edens Expressway, was dismantled in 1974. Shortly thereafter, the Forest Preserve expanded the bike path north of Tower Road, up to the Chicago Botanic Gardens. As you take that path today, you can still see the fenced missile site that years ago, provided a sense of comfort that we might be safe should the unthinkable occur. The Winnetka Historical Society promotes awareness of Winnetka’s heritage through artifact preservation, public access to their museum and Schmidt-Burnham Log House, and enlightening programs, exhibits and publications. Finances are no different, as children are likely to develop similar habits and tendencies as their parents. While every family should determine their own definition of a comfortable lifestyle, perhaps taking nice vacations and purchasing luxury items if you have the financial capacity, ensure you are making fiscally responsible decisions and setting a good example. Continue saving A commitment to saving is a great way to teach your children a vital financial lesson. Whether it’s putting money away for retirement or contributing regularly to a 529 Plan, discuss these different savings techniques with your children. Make sure to thoroughly explain why it is important to withhold spending money now for future benefit. Remember, this is a tough concept for children to grasp. You can always showcase the value of saving by encouraging your children to preserve a set portion of their weekly or monthly allowance. Share mistakes Mistakes are inevitable, both in life and in finances. It’s the ability to learn from those mistakes that turns people into more effective money managers. Consider sharing a few of the mistakes you’ve made with your children. Discuss what happened and the lessons that ultimately came out of it. This type of knowledge is invaluable for children, even at a young age. Realworld examples help bring abstract and complex financial concepts to life and, most importantly, kids learn from their role models that it’s alright to make mistakes. As our children grow older, we sometimes long for the quality time of events like Mother Son Date Night at the Skokie School. However, know that by being a positive financial role model, you provide an essential foundation that can guide your child for years to come.
