Maybe that is why she has had the chance to work with George Clinton, Thomas Dolby, Karen O, and other show business luminaries. Barsha would probably be good at that “Yes, and...” improv game. She delights in building on another’s work in her own distinctive way. Barsha’s new rock musical, titled “A Taste of Things to Come,” will be making its Broadway in Chicago debut at the Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place on March 20. Co-written with composer Hollye Levin, the all-female production place during the 1950s and ’60s in Winnetka. In the beginning, the four main characters — Joan, Connie, Dottie and Agnes — bond over weekly Wednesday meetings about a Betty Crocker cooking contest and pondering how winning the prizes could change their lives. Through the process, they not only share in cooking with one another, but the opportunity to confide secrets and life stories. Things take a turn when the second Kinsey Report, “Sexual Behavior in the Human Female,” is released. The Winnetka Current recently spoke with Barsha about New Trier High School, the metaphorical significance of food and her fluid definition of funk. Winnetka Current: Why Winnetka for the setting of your show? Debra Barsha: We Writer and performer Debra Barsha found inspiration from Winnetka’s 1950s and 1960s history for her newest production, “A Taste of Things to Come,” which makes its Broadway in Chicago premiere for local audiences on March 20. PHOTO SUBMITTED wanted to find a place that was right in the middle of the country and that also was an upper-middle class suburb of Chicago. And then we found out how many famous people came from New Trier High School! WC: Oh, yeah! DB: One of the women wants to get out and make it big as a star, and she relates to all the people that graduated from New Trier. So she’s like, “Why can’t I be like Ann-Margret?” Rock Hudson, Ann-Margret...the list was really long, how many people became stars from New Trier. WC: Yeah, I’ve looked into that myself. I thought you might’ve been referencing that old song, “Big Noise from Winnetka.” But I’m betting that’s not connected. DB: No… We were like, “What is it about this Chicago suburb in the middle of the country that spawned all these great stars? There must be an energy or something going on.” We also liked the actual word “Winnetka.” Hollye, my co-writer, has relatives in Chicago, so that’s another reason. WC: The name Winnetka does sound pretty cool. DB: I don’t know if this is a spoiler, but we put the New Trier fight song in the show. WC: I was looking at the intermission stuff — the big, blown-up posters of actual recipes that they were making, and the mai tais and [side]cars... Is that right? DB: Oh, yes — sidecars, mai tais, Singapore sling, grasshopper — all those drinks. WC: There’s something odd about how that is now coming back with hipster cocktail culture. People are circling back to that but from a very different perspective. DB: Hence the title, “A Taste of Things to Come.” WC: I guess this is as good a segue as any to Afrofuturism. I was really excited to see the George Clinton connection. I listened to the song you wrote [for him], “The Awesome Power Of A Fully Operational Mothership.” DB: I did five albums with George as a singer and a vocal arranger… He is one of my biggest influences. I know it’s odd — I wrote a show about the ’50s and ’60s, but I’m a funk freak — my Twitter handle is @funkfreak! WC: There has to be some common thread. DB: [Clinton and I] were talking about funk, and what the definition of funk is, and he took it way beyond music. He said to me, “Funk is anything it needs to be if it needs to be that thing.” On one of the albums, he said to me, “I want you to go in there and do an arrangement of Broadway meets funk, because I consider you the exact middle ground between Broadway and funk.” I really think there’s funk in everything, especially the ’50s and the ’60s. We wanted to put this funky stuff, musically, in [these characters’] mouths, to give them the power that they needed. WC: There are a lot of Midwestern people in the cast. Was there an attempt to make this a more Chicago- and Midwesternflavored show, or was that just serendipity? DB: We want to honor Winnetka and Chicago… I went and visited Winnetka with Hollye because I wanted to see what it felt like there. I said, “Oh my God, we’ve gotta open the show here!” And it didn’t turn out to be that we opened it there. But when I heard that we were going, I was so excited. I want the kids from Winnetka and Chicago to see if they identify with this. Additionally, Barsha spoke about the show’s relationship to feminism in the wake of the #MeToo movement. DB: We are realizing how pertinent the piece is beyond just a fun entertainment piece — it’s deeper than that. And 1120 N. WC: If you’re pitching this show to somebody from Winnetka, what makes it a show that they should see? DB: Without being preachy or message-y or without man-bashing or any of that stuff, it’s a fun way to get educated about women in this time period. That’s why we set it in the kitchen around food. Remember, food is such a metaphor for so many things. It’s comfort, it’s nourishment, it’s creativity.
