6 EASY PRODUCTIVITY TIPS
(Even if you hate productivity tips)
By Sabrina Satish
Be more productive. It’s wasn’t exactly a New Year’s resolution, as I gave up on those the year
I dropped $480 on a gym membership that resulted in exactly six visits, but I wanted that
statement to be more of a mantra that drove my actions in 2018. On that quest, I’ve started
to incorporate a handful of productivity hacks into my day.
In this month’s “6ix on Six” column, I feature six tips that resonate for me.
Brian Tracy says to get out your pen
1. Slice and Dice
How long can you stay properly
focused on a task? 20 minutes?
40 minutes? 75 minutes?
Whatever that window is,
schedule your workflow
accordingly, breaking your day
into chunks of time and tasks
that can be completed in those
chunks, with regular short breaks.
2. EASY ENOUGH
In his book “Getting Things Done”,
David Allen has a simple, but
effective tip: When a task arises
that you know you can complete
in two minutes or less, do it
immediately. You can start this
easily and immediately. I love it.
3. PEN TO PAPER
This from Brian Tracy, “Make a list
of everything that you have to do
tomorrow, the best time to make
your list is the night before,
if you make the list for
the whole day tomorrow
your subconscious will
work on your list overnight,
and you’ll wake up in
the morning with ideas
and insights that are
sometimes quite amazing.”
“You make the list and ask, if I
could do only one thing on this list
before I was called out of town for
a month, which one task would I
want to be sure to get completed,
put a circle around that.”
4. AM DIALING
Get on the phone early
Haddy Folivi, founder of Clarity
Media, has some good advice on
staying focused and getting things
done.
“I plan my calls between 9:00am
and 10:30am, which leaves me
the rest of the day to completely
focus on other tasks.”
5. GOOD ENOUGH
From Productivity Expert Carson
Tate: Do you know what good
enough is for each of the projects
on your list? This is good enough
for the organization and good
enough for you. Overthinking, over
editing and over tweaking wastes
valuable time and is not necessary.
Do good work, and then stop.
6. THE 5 MINUTE RULE
I’ve seen this one attributed
to Kevin Systrom of
Instagram, and a few
others and I can’t
remember where I first
read about it (a HuffPost
article maybe?), but this is
my favorite tip on the list:
Just get started. Many
times, all that is needed to
get rolling and accomplish
a task is to get rolling on it.
Give the task five minutes
of focused attention and often
you’ll clear the mental hurdle,
push past procrastination and you
brain will want to finish the task
you’ve started.
If you’re looking for a productivity
bump, try out one, or all, of the
above. Good luck getting more
done in 2018!
