The Word on the Street
haddonfield.today |
Spring arrives on March 20.
What is your favorite season,
and why?
Haddon Township’s
FRANK McGEE says
he likes the summer
best because ‘the
weather is nice again
and I like to get out
and do things.”
CAROL WEBER of
Audubon is a fan of
the summer “because
I work in a school and
I’m off for a couple of
months. It gives me
time to revitalize.”
Twelve-year-old
Sebi Del Ponte of
Marlton likes winter
“because I feel really
cozy in my house
talking with friends
online while it’s
snowing.”
We love spring
because “flowers
bloom, it’s getting
warmer, and it leads
into summer and
fresh starts!”
Jeff and Kylie
Mulvenna, of
Cherry Hill.
“Fall is my favorite
season,” said
Jordan Heiden
of Haddonfield,
“because the
changing colors of
the leaves are warm
and exciting, and fall
signals the start of
the holiday season.”
The assistant
manager at the
Westmont Diner,
Vasilios
Kalavrouziotis
likes the summer.
“I get to go to the
beach. I like being
outdoors, bike-riding
and doing all my
favorite things.”

Student rally
The Haddonfield
Education Association
will hold a rally to
stand with students
demanding safety in the
schools. It takes place
in Kings Court on Wed
Mar 14 at 7:10am. Later
that morning, at 10am,
students are planning to
walk out of class for 17
minutes – one minute
for each victim of the
Parkland shooting.
Many students across
the country are planning
to walk out of their
classes at 10am on the
14th – a date chosen
because it will be one
month after the shooting
occurred. While many
teachers will be unable
to participate in the
walkout, members of the
community are welcome
to join the rally in Kings
Court.
‘Never Caught’
For the next Historical Society of Haddonfield
Book Club meeting, Tue Mar 27 at 7pm, they will
discuss Erica Armstrong Dunbar’s Never Caught: The
Washingtons’ Relentless Pursuit of Their Runaway
Slave, Ona Judge.
Dunbar’s book tells of the young enslaved
woman who ran away from the president’s house
in Philadelphia in 1796 and lived out the rest of her
life in freedom in New Hampshire. Kirkus Reviews
called the book, “A startling, well-researched . . .
narrative that seriously questions the intentions of
our first president.” All are welcome to the meeting
at Greenfield Hall, 343 Kings Hwy E.
Haddonfield drive brings hope
For more than 12 years, the office of Dr. Shari
Saluck, 212 N Haddon Ave, has been collecting
coats, hats, gloves and all types of clothing for
adults and children in Camden. Even with spring on
the horizon, the need is still there. Clothing for men
is especially needed, along with new men’s socks.
Why not take a look around for gently used clothing
– and throw in some new socks – to donate? Clothes
can be brought to the waiting room, or placed on
the covered back porch.
The donations from Dr. Saluck’s office will go to
Seeds of Hope Ministries in Camden.
Think Spring Clean-Out in April!
From Mon Apr 2 thru Fri Apr 27, the Borough Public Works Department
will provide special Spring Clean-Out. During April, the Borough relaxes the six
piece per residence limit for household trash pickup and encourages residents
to clean out attics, basements, garages, and yards. It also provides more leaf
and brush pickup. All items placed curbside must meet the requirements for
proper placement of trash found on haddonfieldnj.org, under Trash Regulations.
Trucks will pick up leaves and yard debris that have accumulated over the
winter. Leaves may be piled between the curb and the sidewalk (not in the
street), without containers. Patience, please, as it won’t be possible handle the
large quantity of spring debris on a weekly basis. The chipper will run the first
and third weeks of April; the leaf machine will run during the second and fourth
weeks. Each machine will make two collections. After the special Spring Clean-
Out, normal regulations for trash and brush removal will resume.
Program
State of the Borough
#014 • MARCH 9 TO 23, 2018
NORTH
The Borough is preparing
to implement its most
extensive annual road
program ever. More than
three miles of roads will
be worked on this year,
beginning in the early
summer, at an estimated
cost of $2,170,820. (That
is about the same as the
expenditure in 2017, for
about 1.8 miles of road.)
The schedule – which
is very dependent on
bids coming in close to
estimates and is therefore
subject to change – is as
follows:
DOWN THE ROAD:
2019 thru 2021
For the list of roads
proposed to be worked on
through 2021, scan the QR
Note that the roads
listed are proposals,
and the list is subject to
change.
Road reconstruction is disruptive, dusty, noisy, and
inconvenient, and there’s no good time to do it. But it
must be done and the long-term benefits are worth the
short-term aggravation.
We trust that all who live and drive on the
affected streets will be understanding, and help
the construction teams do their work safely, and as
efficiently as possible.
Vino Forte! fundraiser Sun Apr 8
Don’t miss a delightful afternoon of wine, wit, and
memorable tunes from The Music Man. Drink, eat,
and laugh as you savor the humor and musicality
of the Greater South Jersey Chorus – the chorus
in-residence at Haddonfield School and Center for
the Performing Arts – at their gala fundraiser, Vino
Forte! The Sun Apr 8 event will be held at South
Jersey’s most prominent vineyard, Laurita Winery in
New Egypt, at both 1 and 5pm.
Each act of Vino Forte! will feature crowd
favorites like “Ya Got Trouble” and “76 Trombones”
alternating with Laurita wines and catered
appetizers. The chorus will perform humorous and
romantic choral parts from The Music Man, and
trained vocalists will deliver solos with energy and
conviction. The lightly staged entertainment will
transport guests to Iowa with Harold Hill, the con
artist, and the good townspeople of River City.
Attendees can purchase raffle tickets for chances
to win baskets packed with goodies.
Laurita Winery is at 85 Archertown Road, New
Egypt NJ. Both 1 and 5pm event tickets are available
online now at greatersouthjerseychorus.org and will
also be sold at the door. The $50 tickets include
music, wine, and appetizers.
The Greater South Jersey Chorus has brought the
best of choral music to the South Jersey area for
more than 25 years.
The iPhone camera now scans them
automatically.
iPhone with iOS 11
Option 1 – Use the Camera App
If you upgraded your operating system
when Apple released iOS 11 in mid-
September, you’ll find that scanning a QR
code is as easy as taking a photo.
1. Touch the Camera icon, as if to take a
photo.
2. Hold the phone over the QR code. A dropdown
will appear at the top of the screen,
showing the destination the QR code will
take you to:
3. To accept, tap the drop-down. The
destination will be displayed. It’s that easy!
Option 2 – Use a QR Scanner App
Rejoice for ‘Sister Act’ at HMHS
The High School Drama Club is bringing the musical
Sister Act to the stage with a cast, crew, and orchestra
of more than 80 students. Performances are
Fri Mar 9, Sat 10, Fri 16, and Sat 17 at 7:30pm, and
a matinee on Sun 11 at 2pm. Evening shows are $10;
the matinee performance is $7, or $25 for a family of
four. Tickets will be at the door, and available in the
main office during school hours.
Based on the 1992 film of the same name, Sister
Act is an uplifting musical that will give audiences
a reason to rejoice. Nightclub singer Deloris Van
Cartier witnesses a murder and is forced to hide in
a place no one will think to look for her – a convent.
Deloris revitalizes the convent by teaching the nuns
to sing, and in the process she learns about herself.
Set in the 1970s and featuring a score of disco and
soul music, this hilarious show will have you dancing
in the aisles singing about “Sunday Morning
Fever.”
“The show has a very contemporary feel, which is
something new for us,” said Matt DiDonato, director.
“The vocally demanding score sounds much more
like popular music than show tunes. The musical
numbers are show-stopping hits, but at the heart
of this show is a story about finding acceptance
and friendship in the least likely of places. We are
looking forward to sharing this story with our audiences.”
