Girls’ tea party is brewing for Sun May 20 

Calling all young ladies, their favorite dolls, and special grandmoms, moms, 

aunts and/or other favorite adults! The Haddon Fortnightly will host the 

seventh annual and very popular My Doll and Me Tea on Sun May 20 from 3 to 

5pm at The Haddon Fortnightly Clubhouse, Kings Hwy and Grove St. 

There will be crafts, prizes, a basket raffle, and, of course, a tea party, all 

centered around the young ladies and their favorite dolls. There will be a 

special raffle for the 2018 American Girl Doll of the Year. 

All children must be accompanied by an adult. Reservations should be 

made by May 15. Tickets are $25 per person. Ask about the Three Generation 

Discount.

Get packing to fight hunger! 

Signups are underway for the 6th annual It Takes 

A Village: Feed My Starving Children MobilePack, Fri 

Apr 20 thru Sun 22 at the National Guard Armory in 

Cherry Hill. 

Over the weekend, in six 2-hour shifts, 2,000 

volunteers of all ages will hand-pack 500,000 meals 

consisting of vitamins, dehydrated vegetables, soy 

and rice, which will be shipped to one of 70 

developing nations. The price of each meal’s 

ingredients is 22 cents – or $50,000. 

Feed My Starving Children is a Minnesota-based 

Christian non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that 

is dedicated to getting nutrition to starving and 

malnourished children all over the world. For the 

ninth consecutive year, they received Four Stars 

from Charity Navigator. 

First brought to Haddonfield by First Presbyterian 

Church, MobilePack events have been hosted by 

Haddonfield Council of Churches since 2016. Feed 

My Starving Children brings all ingredients and 

supplies, and the meals are packed assemblyline 

style by small groups. Volunteers include 

families, civic organizations, clubs, schools, 

churches and synagogues, and businesses.

Student rally 

The Haddonfield 

Education Association 

will hold a rally to 

stand with students 

demanding safety in the 

schools. It takes place 

in Kings Court on Wed 

Mar 14 at 7:10am. Later 

that morning, at 10am, 

students are planning to 

walk out of class for 17 

minutes – one minute 

for each victim of the 

Parkland shooting. 

Many students across 

the country are planning 

to walk out of their 

classes at 10am on the 

14th – a date chosen 

because it will be one 

month after the shooting 

occurred. While many 

teachers will be unable 

to participate in the 

walkout, members of the 

community are welcome 

to join the rally in Kings 

Court.

‘Never Caught’ 

For the next Historical Society of Haddonfield 

Book Club meeting, Tue Mar 27 at 7pm, they will 

discuss Erica Armstrong Dunbar’s Never Caught: The 

Washingtons’ Relentless Pursuit of Their Runaway 

Slave, Ona Judge. 

Dunbar’s book tells of the young enslaved 

woman who ran away from the president’s house 

in Philadelphia in 1796 and lived out the rest of her 

life in freedom in New Hampshire. Kirkus Reviews 

called the book, “A startling, well-researched . . . 

narrative that seriously questions the intentions of 

our first president.” All are welcome to the meeting 

at Greenfield Hall, 343 Kings Hwy E. 

Haddonfield drive brings hope 

For more than 12 years, the office of Dr. Shari 

Saluck, 212 N Haddon Ave, has been collecting 

coats, hats, gloves and all types of clothing for 

adults and children in Camden. Even with spring on 

the horizon, the need is still there. Clothing for men 

is especially needed, along with new men’s socks. 

Why not take a look around for gently used clothing 

– and throw in some new socks – to donate? Clothes 

can be brought to the waiting room, or placed on 

the covered back porch. 

The donations from Dr. Saluck’s office will go to 

Seeds of Hope Ministries in Camden.

New windows at Lizzy Haddon. 


Work on the various construction projects at 

Haddonfield Public Schools is progressing satisfactorily, 

and is on track. As of February 1, the overall project 

was 50% complete. 

Progress at individual schools is summarized below.

have been named National Merit Scholarship finalists

Approximately 1.6 million students participate in 

the National Merit Scholarship Program each year. In 

February, some 15,000 semifinalists advance to finalist 

standing. From that group, about 7,500 finalists are 

awarded Merit Scholarships based on their abilities,

China trip: Register by Mar 15 

Haddonfield International Exchange is a local 

nonprofit organization dedicated to education, 

cultural understanding and humanity. The group 

sponsors Destination China, a two-week deepculture 

immersion tour during the summer, from 

Jun 20 to Jul 4. There are only 20 slots for students 

and adult chaperones. Elementary students are 

welcome to travel with parent/s or guardian.

The International Exchange partners with 

the Haddonfield school district to work toward 

broadening our students’ learning experiences 

into the international arena. Students and their 

chaperones participate in humanitarian service, 

collaborate with local youth in their schools, and 

enjoy a local homestay experience with team- and 

friendship-building, physical fitness, and fun! 

Most of the 2017 tour’s 16 delegates were from 

Haddonfield, including HMHS alumni and parents. 

For 2018, longtime resident Stuart Harting, cofounder 

of HIE and founder of H.O.S.T. (Haddonfield 

Outdoor Sculpture Trust), will also lead the group.

Think Spring Clean-Out in April! 

From Mon Apr 2 thru Fri Apr 27, the Borough Public Works Department 

will provide special Spring Clean-Out. During April, the Borough relaxes the six 

piece per residence limit for household trash pickup and encourages residents 

to clean out attics, basements, garages, and yards. It also provides more leaf 

and brush pickup. All items placed curbside must meet the requirements for 

proper placement of trash found on haddonfieldnj.org, under Trash Regulations. 

Trucks will pick up leaves and yard debris that have accumulated over the 

winter. Leaves may be piled between the curb and the sidewalk (not in the 

street), without containers. Patience, please, as it won’t be possible handle the 

large quantity of spring debris on a weekly basis. The chipper will run the first 

and third weeks of April; the leaf machine will run during the second and fourth 

weeks. Each machine will make two collections. After the special Spring Clean- 

Out, normal regulations for trash and brush removal will resume.

On Tue May 15, the Rotary Club of Haddonfield 

Foundation will award the Alice Downs Scholarship 

for Young Violinists, funded by The Gumnut Group 

LLC, publisher of Haddonfield Today and Out&About. 

The application deadline is Mon Apr 30. 

The annual scholarship enables a promising 

student of the violin or viola – a resident of 

Camden County, NJ age 10 to 18 – to enroll as a Day 

Participant at the Philadelphia International Music 

Festival’s two-week summer program at Bryn Mawr 

College. Two sessions will be held: Sat Jun 16 to Fri 

29, and Sat Jul 14 to Fri 27. 

As a Day Participant, the student will take private 

lessons with a member of the festival’s faculty and 

attend master classes. See PhiladelphiaMusic 

Festival.org for details. The student may enroll, on 

their own, in other festival programs, including 

the Extended Day and Residential programs. The 

recipient is expected to attend a Rotary luncheon in 

June to receive the award.

Rejoice for ‘Sister Act’ at HMHS 

The High School Drama Club is bringing the musical 

Sister Act to the stage with a cast, crew, and orchestra 

of more than 80 students. Performances are 

Fri Mar 9, Sat 10, Fri 16, and Sat 17 at 7:30pm, and 

a matinee on Sun 11 at 2pm. Evening shows are $10; 

the matinee performance is $7, or $25 for a family of 

four. Tickets will be at the door, and available in the 

main office during school hours. 

Based on the 1992 film of the same name, Sister 

Act is an uplifting musical that will give audiences 

a reason to rejoice. Nightclub singer Deloris Van 

Cartier witnesses a murder and is forced to hide in 

a place no one will think to look for her – a convent. 

Deloris revitalizes the convent by teaching the nuns 

to sing, and in the process she learns about herself. 

Set in the 1970s and featuring a score of disco and 

soul music, this hilarious show will have you dancing 

in the aisles singing about “Sunday Morning 

Fever.” 

“The show has a very contemporary feel, which is 

something new for us,” said Matt DiDonato, director. 

“The vocally demanding score sounds much more 

like popular music than show tunes. The musical 

numbers are show-stopping hits, but at the heart 

of this show is a story about finding acceptance 

and friendship in the least likely of places. We are 

looking forward to sharing this story with our audiences.”
