3DAY
Awesome Kickoff to “Fire Combat 360” challenge
A LIFETIME IN TWO MINUTES
Mumbaikars must consider themselves
fortunate to have witnessed the 2 minute
challenge as it kicked off on the second day of
the event. After all this was the true purpose of
this entire exercise.
An ecstatic crowd on the sidelines watched and
cheered with familiar chants of 'Bharat mata ki
Jai', and 'Ganapati bappa morya' and the like,
cheering and egging on bravehearts from across
the globe as they grappled with the obstacle
course involving climbing stairs with heavy gear
including breathing apparatus, dodging
obstacles, lifting 90 kg+ odd weights across 3
storeys, pulling dummies of 80 kg across a long
aisle and all in two minutes.
The people were busy peering over one another's
shoulders to catch a glimpse of the contestants
sweat it out to conquer the host of obstacles and
impediments to win this contest. And the best
part, the spirit of camaraderie that prevailed
between contestants was unlike most other
contests where one upmanship is the norm. Here
the goal was to protect, save and rescue, not to
defeat.
Firemen fight and often die unsung in battling
blazes and jump into impossible situations
without a thought of their own lives. What could
be nobler than that? Today, for once, the firemen
were cheered, appreciated and encouraged by
an audience that made them feel and realize how
important they truly were. One could see
Randeep Hooda along with Mayor of Mumbai,
Mr. Vishwanath Mhadeshwar and other political
heavyweights joining the crowd of firefighters
and commoners in taking in the superb show. A
drone hovered over each contest capturing the
moments in all their glory.
If the objective was to show gratitude, for once,
to our firemen, then that was truly realized at
“Fire Combat 360”. If the objective was to test
the fitness levels of contestants, then that was
done too. In fact, this contest has given a whole
new perspective to firefighting and rescue. It has
brought into focus the vital importance of
minutes and seconds when it comes to saving
lives and fighting fires.
To sum it up, “Fire Combat 360” was ultimately
about living a virtual lifetime…… in two minutes.
HOSPITALITY INDUSTRY DISCUSSES FIRE SAFETY AND AWARENESS ISSUES
The second day saw an interactive panel discussion on
fire safety in the hospitality and hotel industry. The
keynote address was by Mr. Ashok Menon Director,
Fire services Goa and panelists included eminent
people like Mr. Niranjan Shetty, ex president AHAR,
Mr. Kamlesh Barot HRAWIx president and others.
Mr. Menon set the ball rolling. He said that on an
average, 59 people die daily in fires. He said that most
fires were caused due to short circuits and careless
acts such as placing flammable material near open
flames or risky locations. He said sometimes in
rooftop restaurants, temporary props remain for days
On Day 2 conclave “Fire Combat 360”
on after the monsoons have gone. He said the practice
in Goa was that restaurant owners had to give an
undertaking that their outlets were fire safe and
authorities had to ensure fire safety norms were
observed. He said NOC's could be obtained online
making it much easier. He spoke of the theme of Safe
Goa 24X7 under which connectivity among fire
stations was an objective as also, the effort to ensure
quick response in difficult situations.
Santosh Shetty who headed AHAR, said that the
government had cut a lot of unnecessary protocols and
bottlenecks to help 'ease of business' in the industry.
He lauded the fire brigade for being forthcoming in
implementing the laws strictly and ensuring safety in
the hotel and restaurant industry. He emphasized that
saving lives was more important than saving property
and belongings. When asked if the government had
done enough to ease the bottlenecks he replied in the
affirmative.
He said that presently a standalone outlet required just
two licenses while a full fledges hotel still needed
around 40. The government was removing
unnecessary regulations, a fact which was
appreciated by the panel. While the industry still had
unresolved issues, there was an effort to ease the
situation.
It was observed by the panel that while newer
technologies and equipment were made available for
the more affluent sections of the hotel industry, the
smaller players still could not afford them. The
hoteliers were unanimous in accepting responsibility
for the safety of their clients. However, while
organized and licensed hotels and outlets could be
monitored from time to time, the unlicensed outlets
were difficult to regulate.
Emphasis was placed on training of staff and it was
suggested that a special monitor or staff leader for
keeping tabs on fire safety and security was being
appointed by some affluent hoteliers but a bit out of
reach for the more modest outlets.
