HOSPITALITY INDUSTRY DISCUSSES FIRE SAFETY AND AWARENESS ISSUES<br />
The second day saw an interactive panel discussion on<br />
fire safety in the hospitality and hotel industry. The<br />
keynote address was by Mr. Ashok Menon Director,<br />
<strong>Fire</strong> services Goa and panelists included eminent<br />
people like Mr. Niranjan Shetty, ex president AHAR,<br />
Mr. Kamlesh Barot HRAWIx president and others.<br />
Mr. Menon set the ball rolling. He said that on an<br />
average, 59 people die daily in fires. He said that most<br />
fires were caused due to short circuits and careless<br />
acts such as placing flammable material near open<br />
flames or risky locations. He said sometimes in<br />
rooftop restaurants, temporary props remain for days<br />

on after the monsoons have gone. He said the practice<br />
in Goa was that restaurant owners had to give an<br />
undertaking that their outlets were fire safe and<br />
authorities had to ensure fire safety norms were<br />
observed. He said NOC's could be obtained online<br />
making it much easier. He spoke of the theme of Safe<br />
Goa 24X7 under which connectivity among fire<br />
stations was an objective as also, the effort to ensure<br />
quick response in difficult situations.<br />
Santosh Shetty who headed AHAR, said that the<br />
government had cut a lot of unnecessary protocols and<br />
bottlenecks to help 'ease of business' in the industry.<br />
