Winter Olympics – not the only major event this month
The month of February is the time of the Winter Olympics, this time being held in
Pyeongchang, South Korea. In the Vicarage, we shall be glued to every event
– Sian is an obsessive Olympics fan, be it Summer or Winter (we
were lucky enough to attend the 2012 London Olympics). One of the
most unusual events in the Winter Olympics is the Skeleton.
Competitors - known as sliders - hurtle headfirst down the ice
course on a sled little bigger than a tea-tray. The fastest
combined time of each slider's four runs decides the winner. The
athletes use their upper bodies to steer, twisting their head and
shoulders to transfer their weight. BOB skeleton racer Adam Pengilly - a devout
Christian, will ask in his prayers for the sort of performance at the Winter Olympics
which won him silver at the World Championships. The first thing he would be entitled
to seek would be safety for launching himself down an ice road which could see him
hit 90mph while riding what appears to be a widescreen TV on rails. No one need tell
Pengilly, from Somerset, that clad only in a Lycra suit, which appears painted on to a
muscular body, his crash helmet is unlikely to save too much pain if things go wrong.
As a former bobsleigher, he has crashed with
others and on his own on the skeleton, the
worst being as a solo slider when he hit the
roof of a run and wrecked parts of his body,
leaving himself unable to walk for a few
weeks, with a hole in his back and a new
thorax. “No one has officially gone at 90mph
– 85mph is the regular speed – but on the
Olympic run at Whistler we all think it could get really fast if the conditions are right,”
says Pengilly with some delight.
“My personal best is 86.5mph but I really hope that I can clock 90. That would be
something and I will probably need to if I am to get a medal.
“You go into this not thinking of fear. You are totally engrossed. You need to be as you
go head-first down the run with your chin a couple of inches above the ice. The
concentration is about the right line through the corner, not about crashing.
Parish of Killay !4
2018

A groove is cut at the start for one of the rails but often, due to loss of balance, it will
“pop the groove” and the rider is left chasing his metal tray or making a crazy dive to
get on. “Sometimes you step on the skeleton as you sprint at the start,” says Pengilly.
“You can dive over the top of it and jump on hard – that’s not good. You bruise or break
ribs at worst – at best you wind yourself and spend a couple of minutes going headfirst
down the run hanging on, unable to breathe.”
It is more than just holding on and praying to God, however. The subtleties of
adjusting weight to steer the sled sort the madmen from the medal men.
Such is the strength of his faith that Pengilly will avoid training and racing on a Sunday
whenever possible.
“I want to honour God. I spend time with him each day and when I pray, I pray for
safety for myself and others. But I pray to perform well, not to win,” says Pengilly, one
of the few athletes who has appeared on BBC Songs of Praise.
“If I perform well and finish 20th or first then that is enough. I want to do the best I
can. I would like a medal, it is not impossible, but you can get too absorbed in this. My
faith is the most essential thing in my life.”
Is faith the most essential thing in YOUR life? Lent – the other major event in February
is a good opportunity to look at our faith. This Lent we are running a rather interesting
course, designed by Church Army, called Faith Pictures. You will find a list of times and
venues at the back of your church. Go on, why not put your name down, meet new
people – engage with God as he seeks to encourage and grow your faith. Also during
Lent, keep a watch out for Adam Pengilly, to see how he does on his Skeleton runs.
May you use Lent wisely – grow closer to God,
and grow closer to fellow Christians.
"this is your life “ to commemorate the retirement of
Harald on 21.1.2018...
As I compile some notes to pay tribute to dear Pastor
Harald....where do I start to do him justice?
He became a dear friend each time he visited us, as he
led the party on the biennial summer trips to Port Eynon,
Gower, Wales, where the 'team Bruckmuhl ' encircled
their tents and marquees for three weeks to enjoy the
tranquility of the coast and country.....together with a fair
amount of rain and wind.....but that never put them off.
We here in St Hilary's Church, where the group
worshipped for three Sunday's on each visit, were
captivated by Harald and the young folk of Bavaria...with
Harald receives a picture of St Hilary
from the congregation , watched by
Canon Phill and Mike Powell
their traditional singing and modern music...which brought a breath of fresh air to our
congregation on each visit. Leading from the front was dear Harald....a modern day
Pied Piper who has led 7 visits to us here in Killay/ Port Eynon. On each visit the party
went to town and country.....Cardiff Blues matches....Brecon
Beacons.......Pembrokeshire.......Worms Head and Rhossili.......Swansea City Football
matches.....and we shall never forget the parade of the whole flag bearing party
around the Liberty Stadium prior to an Ospreys rugby match.....then there was the
visits underground to the Big Pit, Blaenavon ....and climbing the Brecon Cathedral
Harald celebrates the Eucharist in the camp
marquee with the youngsters and
representatives from St Hilary
tower......and from our point of view...visiting the
camp marquee for a candle lit Eucharist
service....led so beautifully on each visit by Harald
and attended by a party from St Hilary....... I could
go on and on.....but we salute our dear friend
Harald as he begins his retirement....he has left
an indelible footprint on our landscape ....he is a
true Christian...a born leader and musician who
has dedicated his life to following our Lord Jesus
Christ in a most humble way. All that remains to
be said from all of us here in St Hilary and St
Martin (including our Vicar, Canon Phil and
Sian) ......we hope you have a long and happy and
blessed retirement....well earned ....but no doubt
your ministry will develop in other ways...even in retirement .
God bless you Harald..and your family....please keep in touch......it has indeed been a
pleasure and a privilege to ' have walked along side you on part of life's
journey'....during your seven visits to us. So we fondly remember you as....Harald the
Seventh !!..... And oggie, oggie. Oggie.......oi oi oi !
PS....we have since heard that another visit to us may be in the offing..alas minus
dear Harald....and in the words of a well known song of Wales....."We'll keep a
welcome in the hillsides"....for all our friends from Bavaria.....
Sincerely.....
A man suffered a serious heart attack while shopping in a store. The
store clerk called 911 when they saw him collapse to the floor.
The paramedics rushed the man to the nearest hospital where he had
emergency open heart bypass surgery.
He awakened from the surgery to find himself in the care of nuns at
the Catholic Hospital. A nun was seated next to his bed holding a
clipboard loaded with several forms, and a pen. She asked him how he
was going to pay for his treatment.
“Do you have health insurance?” she asked.
He replied in a raspy voice “No health insurance”.
The nun asked “Do you have money in the bank?”
He replied “No money in the bank”.
“Do you have a relative who could help you with the payments?” asked
the irritated nun.
He said “I only have a spinster sister and she is a
nun”.
The nun became agitated and announced loudly
“Nuns are not spinsters! Nuns are married to God”!
The patient replied “Perfect, send the bill to my
brother-in-law”.
Health and Safety Issue at the Altar Rail
A potentially very serious incident occurred recently as people were returning from
receiving Communion at the altar rail in St.Hilary’s Church. I have been asked to
inform you of this by our Parish Health & Safety Officer Mr. Alan Clewett and the Parish
Wardens. As she got up from the altar rail and was making her way past others
presently in a kneeling position, a member of the congregation caught the heel of
someone kneeling. This propelled her headlong into the choir stalls, on her way, she
then bumped the person in front of her, who similarly hit the choir stalls with a heavy
bang, before hitting the floor. A third lady (who was not involved in this in any way),
turned to see what was going on behind her, lost her footing, and she too fell to the
floor. The Accident Book was duly completed, the next day, Canon Phillip spoke with all
three ladies, who assured him that they were fine. All due procedures were followed.
Whilst we cannot be prescriptive for every occasion, please be very aware of your
footing as you make your way to, and from the altar rail. We already have someone
helping people down the chancel steps, we really don’t want to have any more
intrusive intervention. Please be very careful, on this occasion, no serious injury was
caused – the next time could be very different.
Twenty-seven per cent of Christians say they never pray
More than a quarter of Christians in the UK have never prayed, a poll published by the
Christian charity Tearfund suggests. The survey of 2,069 adults was conducted by
ComRes, and published on Sunday 14 th January.
Of all respondents, more than half – 1,065 – identified themselves as Christian. Of
these, 73 % said that they had prayed in the past. But the frequency of prayer varied
from several times a day (7%) to hardly ever (10%), or only in times of crisis (13%).
Several denominations were represented in the poll, though most (622) described
themselves as Anglican. Of all Christians surveyed, 27% said they had never prayed.
Another finding from the poll is that one in five of the 869 non-religious people
surveyed, said that they had prayed in the past. Of these, most prayed in times of
personal crisis or tragedy (55%), or on the off-chance that an element of their life or
circumstances might change (32%). Almost one quarter said that they prayed as a ‘last
resort’, or to feel comforted or less lonely.
Other reasons given for prayer included belief in God (39%), or the belief that prayer
could bring about change (32%). The most popular topics of prayer included the family
(71%); thanking God (42%); healing (40%); and friends (40%). Prayers for global
poverty or natural disasters were less common (24%), though the youngest and oldest
generations (18-24yrs and 65yrs+) were more likely to pray for these issues.
Lent is a very good time to address this, if you feel that you fall into the 27% of nonprayers.
The penitential season of Lent begins with a special Eucharist at 7pm on Ash
Wednesday 14 th February at St.Hilary’s (10.30am at All Souls). Throughout the season,
there are opportunities to examine your faith using the Church Army Faith Pictures
courses – for details see the back of your church.
Have you got something you would like to say? Read a good book? Seen a good film or play? Had
a good holiday? Recommend a recipe? Gardening tips? Something interesting or funny happened
to you? Tell us about it. There is a post box at the back of church – just drop in your contributions
and we will share them in the magazine. Or e-mail to reesfolk@btinternet.com Articles for the
magazine can be submitted any time up to the last Sunday of the month for publication the
following month.
Ladies Guild
We returned to Ladies Guild on January 10 th . Many members present had
considered whether to come out on such a wintry evening, but what a treat lay in
store for us. This was a Members’ Own evening led by Pam and Murray Davies.
Pam began by telling us about their various visits to Barcelona over the years and
how things had changed from the days when General Franco was in power. We
were fascinated by the photographs which Murray had taken during their visit to
the Sagrada Familia, Gaudi’s masterpiece. The
original architect was Francesc Del Paula Villa when
building started in 1882, but he was replaced by
Gaudi the following year. Building was completed
in stages, although the four belfries of the Nativity
Façade and Gaudi’s workshop were vandalised and
destroyed during the Spanish Civil War. Pope
Benedict XVI consecrated the Temple in 2010 and
building is due to be completed in about 25 years.
The intricate carving on the exterior is magnificent
and the interior is equally, if not more impressive.
The pillars supporting the roof are intricately carved and the stained glass is a
mixture of old and modern. If you wish to visit, you will need to book in advance.
From Barcelona, we travelled to Petra in Jordan, which has been a World Heritage
site since 1985. The photographs of the Siq, a long narrow gorge, gave no inkling
of the impact of the Treasury building. This is carved into the rock face, is 40 metres
high and decorated with Corinthian capitals, friezes and figures. At the top is a
funerary urn which, according to local legend, conceals the Pharaoh’s treasure. The
origins of the city are unknown but the city began to prosper as the capital of the
Nabatean Arab empire from 1 st Century BC, growing rich through the spice trade. It
was later annexed to the Roman Empire, thriving until a large earthquake, in
363AD, destroyed most of the city. This, together with changes in trade routes, led
to its downfall.
We ended our travels in Egypt, visiting the Pyramids and the Sphinx. Murray also
showed us photographs of some of the characters they had met; these included
people as well as camels with attitude!! This was a wonderful uplifting start to the
New Year and we were all extremely grateful to Murray and Pam for their
meticulous preparation.
s
The following week, we were pleased to welcome Anne Robinson (not the nasty
one!) who came to talk to us about the Fire Service. She
worked for 15 years for the Swansea command team of
the Mid and West Wales Fire Service, the largest of the
three services funded by the Welsh Assembly
Government; the others being South Wales and North
Wales. At present, Anne, has been seconded to local
authorities visiting schools and other organisations
advising on fire prevention.
Anne told us about the different types of appliances
used by the services and the cost of each “call out”. The largest, the Pump, and the
turn table ladder cost £800 even before leaving the station. The smaller ones,
such as the 4x4 which is used for grass fires, cost about £250 a time. The service
also has a small boat on the Tawe, which has been sent to flooded areas, such as
Doncaster, to assist in evacuations.
We were given a great deal of simple, but common sense, ways of avoiding fires
in our homes, such as always unplugging televisions, etc. when not in use; never
leaving on washing machines and tumble dryers when leaving home. Block
multiple plugs should not be used as they are not fused. One half of all fires are
cooking accidents; three fires a day are caused by candles and one every three
days caused by cigarettes.
Anne stressed the need for fire / smoke alarms to be fitted not only on the ground
floor but also on landings and should be checked frequently. The Fire services will
do a survey and provide and fit a ten year alarm free of charge on request.
We were shown a two minute film of a fire starting by accident in a “mock up” of a
teenage girl's bedroom, the speed with which the whole room was engulfed in
flames was terrifying! The point was to reinforce the message that we should
never attempt to deal with it ourselves but to close the door, dial 999 and
evacuate the premises.
Although it was an extremely serious subject, everyone showed great interest and
enjoyed the talk, asking many questions of Anne.
Members were saddened, on 25 th January, to hear of the death of a very
popular member, Olive Moffat who at 94 years of age still had a very keen mind
and great sense of fun. She will be missed.
Our speaker was Jo Hicks, Marketing Manager at The Grand Theatre, telling us
about the history of theatre in Swansea. Jo, who is a niece of one of our members,
Lilian Thomas, trained as an English teacher but much prefers marketing,
The first recorded theatrical performance inn Swansea was in the town hall in
1617. In 1785, when the town population was circa 6000, the first theatre
opened in Wind Street, unimaginatively named The Swansea Theatre, followed by
the New Theatre in Temple street in 1807.
The Grand opened in 1897 with a capacity of 2000, these days the auditorium
seats 1026, including those with restricted views. It was opened on 26 th July 1897
by Dame Adelina Patti. It was the first theatre in Britain to install electricity. Jo
mentioned some of the very famous actors who have appeared there, Sir Henry
Irving, the first knight of the theatre, Sarah Bernhardt, Richard Burton, Ryan and
Ronnie, Rachel Roberts and many others.
The Grand became a cinema in 1933 but
was bought by the Willis family in 1947
when it reverted to theatre. It gained
great popularity under John Chilvers who
was manager from 1959 until 1982. It
was bought by Swansea City Council in
1970 and renovated the following
decade.
Thanks to Jo for a very informative talk about a subject to which we could all
relate.
First visit of Archbishop – to inaugurate new Ministry Area
The first Sunday in 2018 saw the first visit in his new role as Archbishop, to meet with
members of the three parishes of Sketty, Tycoch and Killay. It was a grand occasion,
with a nicely full church. The Archbishop was joined by the Archdeacon of Gower and
the Area Dean of Greater Gower Deanery. The Archbishop began the service with the
challenge that we are to explore new and different ways of engaging with the
community – a community that largely sees the church as having no relevance. It was a
joyous service, with a large choir (mainly of Tycoch & Killay choristers), followed by
excellent refreshments – and there was wine too! This is the first stage of a two stage
process; when we are ready, then the Clyne Trinity Ministry Area will be Commissioned.
Here are some pictures of the days events.
A Memorial Service will be held at St
Hilary Church, Killay, Swansea on Sunday
18 February at 11.00am.
David Peter Morgan 1930 to 27.12.17
Eulogy by Eric Thomas
David was born to Welsh parents in the
Primrose Hill area of London. In 1937 the
family moved to Brecon, his father's family
home.
David attended Pendre C of E Junior School
which was next to the Cathedral. In 1940
David became a Cathedral Chorister and in
1941 he passed the examination to enter
the local Grammar School.
In 1946 after satisfying the examiners of the
Central Welsh Board of Educational
Standards he returned to London to be
trained as a Meteorological assistant in the
Civil Service. He was stationed in Pembroke
Dock at the Flying Boat Centre until August
1948 when he was called up for National
Service and served in the Met Office R.A.F.
branch of the services.
After demob David served as a Met Office
worker in Uxbridge, London followed by
short term visits to Stroud, Larkhill,
Sennybridge, etc
David was disenchanted by the constant
night duties and lack of real activity so he
successfully applied to do teacher training at
Caerleon Training College in 1956. His first
teaching post was in Birmingham at
Secondary level.
On August 1 st 1957 David married Marion,
which he claims was the best move he ever
made in his life!
In 1957-1959 they moved to Bournemouth
to begin their married life and to teach in
local Secondary Schools.
In 1959 David managed to secure a teaching
post in Swansea at, by choice, junior school
level. The first two terms were spent at Cwm
School, Bonymaen, and then in April 1960
moved to Dunvant Junior School where he
spent the rest of his teaching life.
That year David and Marion settled in
Dunvant, buying a house on the newly
created Broadmead estate and were the very
first to become domicile in that area.
It was not long before he realised how lucky
a person he was...living in a rural area within
a community of people striving to do well in
their lives; having children who were
brought up to be well mannered and keen
to adopt the mantle of education in the
widest sense. His school life, said David, was
one of joy and laughter and as each year
came and went he looked back at what they
had accomplished together with satisfaction.
He felt so very lucky for this attitude and
desire to learn on behalf of the pupils of
Parish of Killay !20
2018

Dunvant in each successive year and was to
continue for a long time; such was the
strength of the parents who were so very
supportive of the school.
David was an innovative and inspirational
teacher. As has already been mentioned he
had trained as a meteorologist and he set up
a weather station in his classroom for which
the children kept daily records.
A former pupil whose parents were close
friends of ours told me recently that he felt
that David Morgan had been instrumental in
giving him a good start in education. I did
promise that I wouldn't mention that he was
'slippered' for kicking a football through a
window from inside during a wet playtime!
In 1969 David was good enough to inform
me that there were going to be teaching
vacancies at Dunvant Junior School due to
the increasing number of pupils. I had been
at St Thomas for 14 years and felt like a
change so applied and was successful. David
and I worked there together before I moved
on and co-operated with school -connected
activities, particularly of a social nature, such
as school fetes. We also helped out with
similar activities at St Hilary's when they
were organising fund-raising events.
In the 1960 decade, Marion and David were
blessed with their 3 daughters; Barbara in
1961, Cathie in 1963 and Eve in 1969.
David states that he does not use the word
'blessed' lightly for they have been for him
lights that illuminated home life and Marion
was and is a mother of great strength, tact
and love. They have also been blessed with
four lovely grandchildren: Lauren, Rachel,
Ryan and Amy.
Dave and Marion were both sporty: David
played soccer, cricket, tennis, golf, snooker
and table-tennis (and occasionally put in an
appearance at school).
Marion's great love was hockey and she
played for Swansea Ladies Team at a really
good standard. The girls too enjoyed sport
and they were proud of Eve's achievements
in Badminton as she won the Welsh Singles
and Doubles championship on several
occasions and represented Wales at
International level.
Other activities in the 1960s, David set up a
Boys' Gymnastics and Sports Club which met
at Bishop Gore School and later moving to
Dunvant Secondary Modern School
Gymnasium and the moving to Olchfa Youth
Club when that opened.
A weekly tennis club was started in Dunvant
Park during the summer months which my
wife and I joined by invitation from one of
the members when we moved to Killay,
which was when I first met David and we
played quite a lot of tennis together outside
the club. After retirement we also played golf
together with other friends from church.
In the late 1960s David became a member
of a group of teachers who planned and set
Parish of Killay !21
out the Swansea Authority response to a new
education movement of that time called
Environmental Studies – science, geography
and History combined.
In 1981 David was appointed Deputy Head
at Dunvant School and he became Acting
Head when the Headteacher was seconded
to look at some new initiatives in education.
By 1988 it was fairly clear the Head would
not return so David spent the last 5 years of
his career as Head Teacher of the school with
which he had been associated for 35 years.
In the 1980s Dunvant Community Council
was formed. David stood for election and
was appointed a councillor. In the third year
David became Chairman of the Council and
felt very honoured in carrying out the duties
of that office. However, not happy with the
way that the political party machines
seemed to control the thinking of most
members, as an independent thinker, after
six years of being a member, he decided he
was but a weak voice of concern so did not
seek further election.
In 1995 David was elected a Fellow of the
Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts.
After David retired he started to assemble all
documentation on the Dunvant and Killay
areas and began to put them in historical
order from which came The Story of Dunvant
– 2007; now on Wikipedia and the History of
Killay published in 2006.
David also started the annual ecumenical
quiz which has become a bit of a highlight in
the Dunvant area each pre-Lenten time. This
seems to have done more for the friendship
and acceptance across the denominations
than any United Service, possibly because
everyone was on an equal footing and not
having to accept a different mode of
worship, whichever way it was handled.
While Canon Hywel Hughes was the Vicar of
St Hilary's there was a move to encourage
lay people to assist in Church services and
David was one of three men who offered
themselves for training and until recently
David has played a full part.
One of my favourite verses from Scripture is
from Ecclesiastes in the Old Testament and
states:- 'You shall be missed because your
seat is empty'. I don't think that there is
anything more rewarding you can say to
anyone other than 'you have been missed'.
The desk at which David sat in the chancel
next to the choir stalls has been empty for
some time and David has been missed very
much!
David had a brain tumour which eventually
affected his whole body, but I believe he
actually wore it out with everything he had
undertaken!
GOD BLESS YOU DAVID!
AMEN.
(International and Interdenominational)
All God’s Creation is Very Good!
The interdenominational movement of the Women’s World Day of prayer invites
everyone to attend one of over 5,000 services being held on Friday 2 nd March with
the title ‘All God’s Creation is Very Good!’ We will join an estimated 3 million people
around the world that day in a service which has been written this year by the women
of Suriname in South America.
Starting in Samoa as the sun rises, and ending as the sun sets off the coast of
American Samoa, the service will be translated into more than 95 languages and
dialects as we are reminded that we have responsibilities in caring for the wonderful
world we live in. With its vast rainforest and wealth of resources, Suriname asks us to
pray for conservation and the protection of wildlife, through an awareness of
pollution, misuse and abuse, as well as for the situation in Suriname and concerns for
the future.
This is not simply a day of prayer for women, but for those who live in it.
This year’s service for Women’s World Day of Prayer will be held at St. Hilary’s
Church, Killay. Friday 2 nd March 10.30am.
We will be joined by Worshipers from Churches / Chapels in Killay, Sketty, Tycoch &
Uplands.
Please come and join this moving service.
