Mothers’ Union M.U. members met for the first time in the new year, 2018, on January 16 th for a Eucharist in church, Canon Phillip Gwynn officiating. We then retired to the hall for tea. Carole, Branch Leader, greeted members and gave news of absent friends and forthcoming events. The A.G.M. will be held on Tuesday, February 6 th at 2:00pm in the hall. On Monday, February 19 th , the Annual Wave of Prayer will be held in the lower hall from 3:00 to 3:45pm. The second meeting for February will be on Tuesday, February 20 th at 2:00pm when Sarah Harris will be telling us about the purpose and highlights of her recent trip to India with Jeremy and Steve. Health and Safety Issue at the Altar Rail A potentially very serious incident occurred recently as people were returning from receiving Communion at the altar rail in St.Hilary’s Church. I have been asked to inform you of this by our Parish Health & Safety Officer Mr. Alan Clewett and the Parish Wardens. As she got up from the altar rail and was making her way past others presently in a kneeling position, a member of the congregation caught the heel of someone kneeling. This propelled her headlong into the choir stalls, on her way, she then bumped the person in front of her, who similarly hit the choir stalls with a heavy bang, before hitting the floor. A third lady (who was not involved in this in any way), turned to see what was going on behind her, lost her footing, and she too fell to the floor. The Accident Book was duly completed, the next day, Canon Phillip spoke with all three ladies, who assured him that they were fine. All due procedures were followed. Whilst we cannot be prescriptive for every occasion, please be very aware of your footing as you make your way to, and from the altar rail. We already have someone helping people down the chancel steps, we really don’t want to have any more intrusive intervention. Please be very careful, on this occasion, no serious injury was caused – the next time could be very different. Parish of Killay !12 2018
Twenty-seven per cent of Christians say they never pray More than a quarter of Christians in the UK have never prayed, a poll published by the Christian charity Tearfund suggests. The survey of 2,069 adults was conducted by ComRes, and published on Sunday 14 th January. Of all respondents, more than half – 1,065 – identified themselves as Christian. Of these, 73 % said that they had prayed in the past. But the frequency of prayer varied from several times a day (7%) to hardly ever (10%), or only in times of crisis (13%). Several denominations were represented in the poll, though most (622) described themselves as Anglican. Of all Christians surveyed, 27% said they had never prayed. Another finding from the poll is that one in five of the 869 non-religious people surveyed, said that they had prayed in the past. Of these, most prayed in times of personal crisis or tragedy (55%), or on the off-chance that an element of their life or circumstances might change (32%). Almost one quarter said that they prayed as a ‘last resort’, or to feel comforted or less lonely. Other reasons given for prayer included belief in God (39%), or the belief that prayer could bring about change (32%). The most popular topics of prayer included the family (71%); thanking God (42%); healing (40%); and friends (40%). Prayers for global poverty or natural disasters were less common (24%), though the youngest and oldest generations (18-24yrs and 65yrs+) were more likely to pray for these issues. Lent is a very good time to address this, if you feel that you fall into the 27% of nonprayers. The penitential season of Lent begins with a special Eucharist at 7pm on Ash Wednesday 14 th February at St.Hilary’s (10.30am at All Souls).
