Health and Safety Issue at the Altar Rail
A potentially very serious incident occurred recently as people were returning from
receiving Communion at the altar rail in St.Hilary’s Church. I have been asked to
inform you of this by our Parish Health & Safety Officer Mr. Alan Clewett and the Parish
Wardens. As she got up from the altar rail and was making her way past others
presently in a kneeling position, a member of the congregation caught the heel of
someone kneeling. This propelled her headlong into the choir stalls, on her way, she
then bumped the person in front of her, who similarly hit the choir stalls with a heavy
bang, before hitting the floor. A third lady (who was not involved in this in any way),
turned to see what was going on behind her, lost her footing, and she too fell to the
floor. The Accident Book was duly completed, the next day, Canon Phillip spoke with all
three ladies, who assured him that they were fine. All due procedures were followed.
Whilst we cannot be prescriptive for every occasion, please be very aware of your
footing as you make your way to, and from the altar rail. We already have someone
helping people down the chancel steps, we really don’t want to have any more
intrusive intervention. Please be very careful, on this occasion, no serious injury was
caused – the next time could be very different.
