Abstract<br />

Thisthesiscoversatheory-inspired,conceptualaccountinvolvingorganizational<br />

changeatthecurentinterfaceatfurtherandhighereducation.Inthisspecificthesis,<br />

theeducationinEnglandwilbefocusedon,especialyduringtheperiodof1988to<br />

2008.Itisalsofocusesoncolegesinfurthereducation,providingcoursesinhigher<br />

educationasoverseenbyadiferenthighereducationsector.Thestudywilalsolook<br />

intothefunctionandroleofboundaryorganizations,aswelasthenatureofthe<br />

boundaryandexchangesworkwhichtakesplacebetweenthesetwosectors.<br />

Introduction<br />

Thisthesisistheory-inspired,andaconceptualinvestigationonorganizationaland<br />

institutionalchangewhichhastakenplacethroughoutaperiodoftwentyyears,inboth<br />

Higher Education (HE) and Further Education (FE) sectors in the field of<br />

post-compulsoryeducation.Itbridgesthegapinthefieldofresearch,especialythe<br />

evolvingrelationshipbetweenbothHEandFEsectorswhichitwilbediscussedas<br />

lackingasubstantialtheoreticalyinformedresearchbodyinordertocomplementa<br />

policy-basedempiricalwork.Thisthesiswilalsosynthesizearangeofdiferent<br />

disciplinarytraditionsinordertocreateananalyticalandconceptualframeworkfor<br />

understandingcurentlyemerginghybridformsofFEandHEorganizationalformsand<br />

the organizationaland institutionalchanges in the delivery ofHR which are<br />

non-universitybased.

TheFieldofQuestioning<br />

Thefieldofquestioninginvestigatedinthisparticularthesisinvolvesthedeliveryof<br />

FE-HEattheinterfaceoftheEnglishsectorsconsideredthroughoutaperiodof<br />

twentyyears(Lambert,2004).Theboundaryworkperformedattheinterfaceandthe<br />

functionandroleofdiferentboundaryorganizationswhichmediateexchanges<br />

throughouttheFE-HEinterfaceandiscontextualizedasapartofamuchwider<br />

system.<br />

ThisthesisalsoexplorestheeverchangingrolesandfunctionsinvolvedinFE-HE<br />

educationtheoreticaly,chronologicalyandconceptualy.Thistwodecadeperiodwas<br />

onethatwitnessedrapidorganizationalandinstitutionalchange.Thepurposeofthe<br />

thesisistoanalyzethesechangesandtransitionsasamainaspectinvolvedina<br />

widerpoliticaleconomywhichsituatesFE-HEeducationinawideranalyticaland<br />

conceptualframework.Thisframeworkwilthenbeusedindevelopingamodel,<br />

contextualizingtheexchangeswhichhappensacrosstheinterface,aswelasthe<br />

reproductionofsocial,economic,symbolicandculturalcapitalcrossingtheinterface<br />

(Chen,2002).

ThestudyisonlylimitedtoFE-HEEnglisheducation.Itisalsoboundedbylocation,<br />

timeandsector.Stil,thisprovisionneedstobeproperlyunderstoodconsideringa<br />

widermacroprocesswhichincludesthemassificationandmarketizationofHEwhich<br />

acceleratedfrom themid-1980sandforward.Associatedwiththeseshiftswasan<br />

emphasis regarding the introduction of private sector practices,competitive<br />

mechanismsandmanagementtechniquesintothepublicsector.FE-HEeducation<br />

wouldnotbeexpectedtobeimmunefrom thesetrends.<br />

TheStructureofthe<strong>Thesis</strong><br />

Thisthesisisstructuredintothreediferentparts.Thefirstpartofersthecontext<br />

involvingtheunderstandingthedevelopmentsinFE-HEeducation,reviewingrelevant<br />

literatureandoferingarationalefortheadoptedresearchapproach.Thesecondpart<br />

developsananalyticalframeworkwhichisusedinconceptualizingFE-HEeducation,<br />

constituting the primary research body.The last part looks into the policy<br />

developmentsinvolved,andexaminestheimportanceoftheoryinilustratingpolicy<br />

(Martinez,2010).<br />
