Take the Plunge raises
$15K for Special Olympics
Staff Report
Winter swimming
events, often branded as
a “polar plunge,” have
grown in popularity in
recent years, but not all
raise funds for a cause.
Highland Park High
School’s Take the Plunge
challenge, however, did
exactly that
On the morning of Feb.
25, members of Highland
Park High School’s Rotary
Interact Club boarded
buses and headed to Fox
Lake to participate in the
annual Polar Plunge to
support Special Olympics
Illinois, according to a
press release.
Dressed in their favorite
Spongebob Squarepants
gear to represent their
theme, “HPHS Presents:
Plungebob Squarepants,”
the 75 club members
raised roughly $15,000
diving into the icy waters.
While the club did not
win the award for best
costume, it walked away
with the ‘Cool School
Challenge’ trophy for the
second consecutive year.
This award is given to the
group that raises the most
funding, according to the
press release.
Teacher Melissa Zientara,
one of the sponsors
of the school’s Rotary Interact
Club, was presented
with an award for being
a top fundraiser, raising
more than $4,000 in memory
of her former student
and Rotary Interact Club
member Rohan Malempati.
Rohan, who died in
2014, loved volunteering
for Special Olympics and
was an integral part of
making the Rotary Interact
Club what it is today,
according to the press release.
