- MADE FOR KIDS 

All Stars Cricket gives girls and boys from the ages of five to eight an 

opportunity to become a star. The curriculum of fun cricket activities 

and games provides your children with the basic movement skills to 

begin a lifelong love of our sport and general physical activity. 

For an hour a week over an eight-week period, our fully trained 

and vetted activators will deliver game-based activities that teach 

basic cricket skills including catching, throwing and hitting moving 

balls and social skills such as teamwork and communication. Held at 

accredited cricket clubs, these courses are the perfect way for your 

child to learn about cricket and make friends in a safe and, most 

importantly, fun environment. 

All participants will receive an All Stars Cricket branded pack 

including a cricket bat, ball, shirt, cap, backpack and activity booklet. 

If you took part last year and sign-up for 2018, you’ll receive a new 

bat, ball, stumps, new-design T-shirt, kit bag and activity booklet. 

WHY IS ALL STARS CRICKET GOOD FOR MY CHILD? 

All Stars Cricket will provide your child with all of the fundamental 

skills they need to play. Through lively, fun games, they will learn about 

cricket and be better prepared to take part in all sports. Over the 

eight-week programme, the trained activators will teach your child to:

It’s Spring! Well, nearly. After the recent snow apocalypse, 

you’d be forgiven for thinking that the warm weather will never 

come, but be assured, Spring is coiled, waiting to be sprung. 

This time of year is all about new beginnings and you’ll start to see 

new shoots of life appearing soon. With the warmer weather on 

the way (hopefully) you’ll be able to get outside and enjoy it. In 

our ’What’s On’ Guide, you’ll find lots of amazing activities to keep 

you busy this Spring, including Easter egg hunts, egg-tastic fun 

days and many more during the Easter holidays. We’ve highlighted 

a selection on pages 12 and 13 for you. If you’d like to let us know 

what your favourite aspects of this time of year are, or if you have 

some lovely pictures of the world around you, we’d love to see 

them!

New Volunteers welcomed at Beaudesert 

Staffordshire Day 2018 

Staffordshire Day is the day we celebrate everything we love about 

Staffordshire. This year Staffordshire Day will take place on Tuesday 

1st May, but as it’s a weekday, celebrations have been extended to 

the weekend before and after. 

Did you know? 

• May 1st is the anniversary of when Josiah Wedgwood set up his 

pottery company in 1759, helping to transform Staffordshire into the 

centre of the world’s ceramics industry. 

• The first Staffordshire Day took place in 2016, the year the county 

turned 1000 years old. 

The celebrations will include the Lymelight family music festival 

supporting the charity Breast Cancer Now. New for this year is an 

exhibition at the Brampton Museum, Newcastle-under-Lyme, to 

celebrate Staffordshire’s Philip Astley, who created the modern circus 

exactly 250 years ago. Other additions include the World’s Biggest 

Oatcake Morning and the Staffordshire Day Mugshot campaign.

Seabridge Primary pupils are 

to publish their own book 

The book ‘Heroes’ has grown out of the work of 

Seabridge Primary’s radio station, where children 

get to quiz successful people about their lives and 

careers. It has been inspired by interviews with 

sporting heroes and the ‘super powers’ that have 

helped them achieve success. They delved into the 

radio interview archives and from there a group of 

pupils set to work producing the autobiographical 

pieces for their chosen sporting heroes, including 

Trentham-based para-canoeist Ian Marsden, 

former Stoke City player Michael Duberry and the 

World’s Strongest Man Eddie Hall. 

Alongside the potted autobiographies, the book tells the story 

of Seabridge’s football team as it travels to a tournament in Moscow. Along 

the way, the bus breaks down and crashes and the children have to contend 

with tornadoes and other dramas. Each sporting star uses their talent to 

save them. Peter Hooper, managing director of Cox Bank Publishing, has 

helped steer the children’s ideas and also drafted in Staffordshire University 

comic art students to work with them on the illustrations.

Welcome Wednesdays offer the chance to see Lichfield Cathedral School during 

a normal working day – there is nothing artificially set up especially for the open 

morning! Parents can meet teachers, talk to the Head, see the wonderful pupils 

and get a real sense of the fun but purposeful atmosphere. 

By touring the School you will see the small class sizes, which means that every

Outdoor Activity Centre 

Visitors today often have little idea of the rich historical background 

surrounding Beaudesert. Castle Ring, to the north of the Beaudesert estate 

is a large two tiered Iron Age hill fort, one of seven such 

forts in Staffordshire. The Normans saw the value of 

the Chase as a hunting ground and to raise money 

for the crusades, Richard I sold the Manor of 

Beaudesert to the Bishop of Lichfield. Henry VIII 

later gave the house and land to Sir William Paget, 

an ancestor of the first Marquis of Anglesey. 

The Marquis, in 1937, gifted the parkland to the 

Scouts, Guides and youth of Staffordshire. The 

lands were conveyed to a Charitable Trust—now 

known as ‘The Beaudesert Trust’. 

The centre now offers opportunities for young people 

from a wide range of youth organisations and educational establishments 

to take advantage of activity, camping and residential experiences in this 

area of outstanding natural beauty. A significant number of new volunteers 

have recently been welcomed into the team at Beaudesert Outdoor Activity 

Centre. These have included two volunteer gardeners, a number of regular 

instructors who are supporting activities and events, media support, shop 

staff, a trustee, and many others who are making valuable contributions. 

The centre has a major event in its calendar coming up – Competition 

Day on 24 March. This gives groups, such as Scouts and Guides, the 

opportunity to compete in archery, pedal karts, traverse wall, air rifle 

shooting, challenge course, and more. It coincides with the Scout and Guide 

camping weekend, where groups can camp overnight for free.

the 150-acre site, 350 memorials

Hatchlings Animal Encounters will return to the Arboretum this Easter from 

Friday 30 March – Monday 2 April. The free experience, featuring rabbits, 

guinea pigs and other small critters, gives the Arboretum’s young, and 

young at heart, visitors the opportunity to meet, interact with, and feed a 

host of creatures. Throughout the Easter families will also be able to collect 

a free copy of the Arboretum’s Easter trail, which will take families on an 

exciting adventure around the site. Little hands will also enjoy participating 

in the Arboretum’s animal themed messy make and take – ‘Pocket Pets’. 

Throughout the Easter holidays, until Sunday 15 April, families will also be

Eland Lodge Equestrian Centre invites 

families to two events this Easter. 

Clues have been hidden around the beautiful Eland Lodge parkland 

near Ashbourne for their Easter Egg Hunt event on 2 April. Go along 

between 10.30am and 3pm to try and find all the clues and claim your 

Easter egg prize. This is a fun day out for all the family and everyone 

is welcome whether on foot, with your dog or riding your pony! £7 per 

egg hunter. 

For something a little different, you can go and watch competitors in 

Dressage, Showjumping and Cross Country at the Eland Lodge Horse 

Trials on 14 and 15 April. A great day out for all the family, with shopping, 

hot food stalls, and free entry and parking for spectators! 

Carrot Cake Cupcakes 

Chocolate Easter Eggs have been a traditional treat since the 19th 

Century, but that doesn’t mean that we have to over-indulge. Why not 

try these gluten-free Carrot Cake Cupcakes? They’ll tempt everyone – 

including the Easter Bunny. 

INGREDIENTS 

Carrot Cakes 

125g blanched almond flour 

16g coconut flour 

½ teaspoon baking soda 

1/8 teaspoon salt 

1 ½ teaspoons ground cinnamon 

105g honey 

2 teaspoons vanilla essence 

½ teaspoon ground ginger 

¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg 

2 large eggs 

75g refined coconut oil 

50g grated carrots 

Frosting 

55g cream cheese 

4 teaspoons maple syrup 

1 ½ vanilla essence 

(thin out with milk if needed) 

If you want to go dairy free, there are 

dairy free cream cheese and milk 

alternatives available. 

Garnish with Popcorn for a little extra 

flourish. 

INSTRUCTIONS 

1 Pre-heat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a muffin tin with 8 muffin 

liners. 

2 Mix together the dry ingredients (almond flour through to nutmeg). 

Set this aside. 

3 In a separate bowl, mix together 

the eggs, oil, honey, and vanilla. 

4 Add the dry mix to the wet mix 

just until combined. Gently fold in 

the grated carrots. 

5 Divide the batter evenly among 

the liners and bake for 17-20 

minutes. 

6 Let the cakes cool for 5 minutes 

in the pan and then remove to a 

wire rack to cool completely. 

Frosting 

1 Mix everything together until 

combined. If the mix seems too 

thick add milk sparingly until it 

suits your taste. 

2 Note: Add the frosting just 

before serving, as it will need 

refrigerating otherwise!

War Built - WW1 Project

Youth Theatre, Group 7. In the Autumn of 1914, 

only months after the outbreak of World War One, 

construction began on two large camps on Cannock 

Chase. An entire town was created where the 

soldiers would live and train. It would often become 

the final stop before travelling to Europe to face an 

uncertain future. To mark 100 years since the end of 

World War One, SGYT present a devised piece using 

letters, postcards and photographs taken at the 

time to recreate life inside the “Town the Great War
