Whats New Easter.indd 1 05/03/2018 11:52

Do you have a child aged 3 to 6
years old? Is your child’s behaviour
hard to manage?
The SHINE research group (https://shineresearchlab.
wixsite.com/home) at the UCL Institute of Education is
conducting a research study to find out how children’s
individual characteristics, such as temperament, affect
how they respond to parental rewards and discipline.
Rewards and limit-setting are common
strategies that parents use to manage
their children’s behaviour. Research
suggests that children with a fearless
temperament (low fear, boldness) are
insensitive to punishment. For children
who are less responsive to punishment,
typical parental discipline strategies
such as time-out can be less effective
in managing challenging behaviour.
This may lead to potential problems in
empathy and conscience development,
which in turn contribute to the
development of long-term behavioural
problems. Children who are insensitive
to punishment may instead benefit from
gentle parental discipline and rewards.
Moreover, a parent-child relationship
that is warm and positive may provide
motivation and reinforcement for child
compliance and prosocial behaviour.
This research study investigates how
children’s responses to rewards and
punishment relate to the development
of challenging behaviours such as
disobedience, aggression and tantrums.
It further investigates which types of
rewards may be most effective for young
children, for example, praise or stickers.
The information that you and your child
provide will inform our understanding of
the development of behaviour problems
in young children.
Who can take part?
We are looking for families with children
aged 3 to 6 years who are based in
the Warwickshire and Birmingham
area. Interested families should have
a reasonable grasp of the English
language to be able to provide
informed consent and understand
study procedures. Please note that
this research is not suitable for children
with significant developmental delay,
significant health concerns, hearing and/
or vision loss, or autism.
What will happen if I
choose to take part?
•During the research session:
Your child will be asked to play tablet
games designed to assess his/her
response to rewards (e.g. win a star)
and punishment (e.g. lose a star).
•Parents will be asked to complete
questionnaires about your child’s
behavior, your own well-being and
your family life.
•You and your child will be observed
and videotaped interacting in your
home. We understand that not
everyone is comfortable with this and
we have made this optional for families
who do not wish to be observed/
videotaped but still want to take part in
this research study.
The whole session should last no longer
than 1 hour and 30 minutes. If
you agreed to additional observation
procedures the sessions will last
no longer than 2 hours and 30
minutes.
In appreciation of your time, families
who complete all assessments will
receive a £10 shopping voucher. In
addition, you will be able attend a free
parenting information seminar
following the research session. This
seminar will provide information about
positive parenting and managing child
disruptive behaviours. Seminars will be
held at the Coventry Central Library,
Smithford Way, Coventry CV1 1FY, and
are subject to availability.
What are the benefits of
taking part?
The information that you and other
families provide may help professionals
and other parents and children. A
greater understanding of children’s
response to reward and discipline can
help in developing useful rehabilitation
programmes. We also hope that your
child will find the games interesting and
fun!
Advertorial
Will anyone know my child
and I have been involved?
All data collected will be kept confidential
and will only be accessible by the
research team. Only group data will be
reported and you will not be identifiable
in any reports or publications. All
information will be stored according to
the requirements of the Data Protection
Act (1998).
What will happen to the
results of the research?
You will receive a report about the study
by email once we have collected data
Interested in
participating? Want to
find out more?
If you have any questions about
the study, please contact us.
We would be delighted to hear
from you!
The SHINE research group at
the UCL Institute of Education is
directed by Dr Jennifer Allen, a
Lecturer and Clinical Psychologist
specialising in child and adolescent
mental health. At SHINE, we
believe that a better understanding
of the interplay between child
temperament and the environment
in the development of child
psychopathology is crucial for
the development of high quality
interventions aimed at improving
child mental health. Our work is also
to best support adults who children
most rely on for their social and
How to Prepare for the 11 Plus in 6 Months
With just less than 6 months to go
before the Birmingham, Walsall and
Warwickshire 11 Plus Examinations here
are our suggestions for how to use the
remaining time effectively:
1. Regular Reading
Reading regularly can improve
your child’s reading speed,
vocabulary and comprehension
skills. Reading can also help
your child to deal with difficultly
worded maths problems.
2. Practice Daily
Your child will have the best
chance for 11 Plus success if
they do some work on a daily
basis. Daily preparation over time
has been proven to help children
to become more consistent
than children who only rush
preparations shortly before the
exam.
3. Mock Exams
Sitting a series of mock exams
will help you to monitor your
child’s performance over time
and highlight strengths and
weaknesses. Exposing your child
to examination conditions will
also help your child to overcome
examination nerves and practice
working under time constraints.
4. Intensive Courses
Many children receive regular
weekly tuition for the 11 Plus.
Booking intensive courses during
school holidays, in the run up
to the real exam, will allow your
child to benefit from an additional
push which may make all the
difference in the real 11 plus
exams.
Keep your children active
with Everyone Active
Being physically active every day is important for the healthy growth
and development of children of all ages.
To maintain a basic level of health, children need to do at least
60 minutes of physical activity per day. This should range from
moderate activity such as walking to school, scooting or playing in
the playground to vigorous activity such as swimming, running and
gymnastics.
Keeping your children active over the Easter holidays is easy with
Everyone Active’s ‘Active Kids’ programme. We offer a wide range of
activities for children aged from four months to 10 years. Sessions run
both during term time and in the school holidays, with the emphasis
on having fun!
From football coaching, gymnastics, dance and trampolining to
swimming lessons and under-fives ‘Active Antz’ and soft play
sessions, there are plenty of activities for your little ones to enjoy.
To find out more information about our children’s activities and holiday
camps, visit www.everyoneactive.com or speak with colleagues at
your nearest Everyone Active centre.
