Christmas Card Competition
Winners!
Every year Primary Times asks children
to create the picture for our Christmas
Card. This year we received a sack full of
wonderful entries and we would like to
thank you all for taking the time to draw,
colour, paint and glitter your designs for us!
The overall winner of the competition
is Abigail Streeton Age 5 from Preston
Lancashire, who will receive 50 Christmas
cards made up in her painting of a
Christmas tree on a snowy day. We were
also so overwhelmed by the standard of
entries that we also decided to award two
runner up prizes who will also receive 50
copies of their Christmas card designs,
they were: Jack Thornley Age 7 from St
Pauls C of E Primary School Stoke – on-
Trent (far left) and Ruby Grant age 10 from
Wallacestone Primary School (middle).
Fostering
Fostered children
vary in age from
babies to teenagers.
Every child’s story is different, but they all need the security of ordinary
family life until they can return to their parents or if this is not possible
to live with either an adoptive family or remain in foster care. Fostering
provides asense of belonging and emotional security which is vital to
a child’s health and wellbeing, which might be for afew days, weeks
or months, or longer depending on their situation.
Many people think they might not be able to foster but foster carers
come from all walks of life, you don’t need aspecific qualification, it
doesn’t matter what age you are, single or married you just need the
space in your heart and in your home to make areal difference.
The performing
arts in education
provides students
with the opportunity to
engage the mind, the
body and emotions into a
collaborative expression of all
that it means to be human.
They discover their own
voice, grow in confidence
and develop empathy.
Performing arts students
grow in understanding of
what it means to not only
be human, but to be good,
noble, honourable, kind and
compassionate.
Whether children have
the opportunity to perform
in productions or help out
behind the scenes, Drama
and Performing Arts engages
with the creative side of
the brain. Students gain
important life skills as they
learn the value of critical
feedback, both positive and
constructive.
Children also get the
opportunity to celebrate
the richness and
depth of human
expression
in all of
its forms.
Drama
and the
performing
arts allow
an avenue
to develop
cognitive abilities
that complement
other disciplines.
Further, itbuilds
confidence which
benefits public
speaking
opportunities.
Communication between
peers is accelerated as
students are exposed to
group activities. Some
students find their ‘voice’
while studying the Arts.
Creative expression is agreat
way tobuild self-confidence
and can be particularly
beneficial for introverted and
reserved children.
The Arts can also be
asource of solitude –a
place where achild is able
to shut out their surrounds
and immerse themselves
in acreative environment.
This process allows the
imagination to thrive, aiding
internal exploration. It’s
anatural precursor to a
well-developed sense of
self. The Arts can act as
an agent through which
avariety of emotions can
be learned, rehearsed and
practiced. Including delight,
anger and unhappiness.
This experience can define
achild’s growing sense
of independence and
interdependence.
"Imagination is moreimportant than
knowledge.” - Albert Einstein
PRIMARY TIMES EXCLUSIVE
Bonjour!
Guten Tag!
Ciao!
How studying asecond language from an early age
helps your children in school, at home, and beyond
In our increasingly
diverse society,
the ability to speak
a second, or even
third, language is of growing
value. Opening our minds to
learning and embracing new
languages, especially from
a young age, can bring rich
rewards and be agreat way
to prepare our children for
success in every aspect of
their adult lives.
Whilst learning asecond
language at any age will bring
multiple benefits, research
studies have shown that
early exposure to asecond
language will positively help
define achild’s retention of
vocabulary, pronunciation
and cognitive development.
As children’s brains develop,
they retain new vocabulary
and knowledge very quickly
and, as aresult, can grasp
language structures far
more naturally than adults.
Consequently, the more
exposure achild has to
their new language, the
more fluent they will
eventually become.
By using adifferent
language system, achild’s
oral and written English
communication skills will
vastly improve. As their
knowledge develops, they
will begin to compare foreign
words and phrases to their
English counterparts and,
as aresult, find similarities,
differences and anomalies.
This general understanding
will improve their problemsolving
skills, creativity,
reading, and writing in their
school years, as well as
their adult life.
Alongside this, introducing
a second language into
the home will encourage
you and your child to learn
about and develop agreater
understanding of different
cultures. This will allow your
child to better understand
the expressions and styles
of communication that differ
from our own, as well as
the scale of the world in
which we live.
This opens their mind and
can also be agreat way for
you and your family to
explore different
cuisines, activities and
lifestyles!
Achoristership in New College
and amusical education for life
Each September four or five seven-year-old boys start as choristers in
New College Choir, and begin an extraordinary musical and educational
journey. Six years later they leave as expert musicians. They sing in concerts
across the world record CDS, and take part in choral services in Oxford’s
grandest medieval chapel. Parents often ask how an ‘ordinary’ small boy
is transformed into amusician of professional standard while still being a
‘normal’ school boy! The answer is in the New Colleges specialist music
programme developed by the choir director. Robert Quinney, with choir and
school staff. Choristers learn exceptional musical skills but also the fun and
challenges of being ateam player, as well as commitment and focus which
enhances every aspect of their lives.
For all information about being achorister please see ‘Choristerships’ on
www.newcollegechoir.com or contact the Chapel &Choir Administrator:
Chandlings School
How would your children like to ride apony to start the day? Or go pond
dipping to see nature close-up, practice in the ballet studio, visit the
vegetable garden to learn about where food comes from?
At Chandlings Prep School, you don’t just learn in the classroom. Learning
happens everywhere.
Chandlings educate boys and girls aged 2-11 within 60 acres of beautiful
grounds; located in idyllic Oxfordshire countryside, yet just five miles from
Oxford itself.
Indoors or outside children can swim, play rugby, tennis, hockey or cricket,
and enjoy fencing, archery or even around of golf. They can learn teambuilding
on the rope course in the bluebell wood, or watch birds from the eco
hide. They can cook in the food tech room, practice in the music suite, create
in our DT room or act in the mini-amphitheatre.
The Nursery children, whose classrooms are located in the Lavender
Courtyard, enjoy all of this along with their own special Nursery Woodland,
secure Nursery garden and play area.
Transform
your tree
Instead of taking your old tree to the
tip, put it outside in your back garden
to create an additional habitat for
birds, squirrels and other wildlife. Get
the kids involved in some messy play
by coating the branches in margarine
or peanut butter and rolling them in
bird seed. To add some decoration,
consider hunting down some pine
cones and hanging them from the
branches with string or twine.
DIY Christmas
Instead of throwing them away,
you and your children can easily
transform your old Christmas
cards into adorable bookmarks
using this quick and easy craft.
your favourite cards, keeping
