A POSTER-FREE TOWN PLEASE
Cobh Tidy Towns discussed the issue of posters relating to any future referendum at
a recent meeting . We are requesting that posters are not hung from Cows Cross into
and including Cobh Town, from Ballynoe Road on ferry approach into and including Cobh
Town and from Cuskinny into and including Cobh Town. Past voting campaigns have all
respected our request.
Posters are a blight on the landscape and streetscape as well as being a drain on scarce
resources. The blitz of posters competing for space often one on top of the other is unsightly.
The opportunities to share images & notifications are numerous today with social
media avenues as well as traditional media to publicise campaigns.
The request that such posters are not hung within the boundaries specified supports the
efforts of Cobh Tidy Towns to make Cobh an even nicer place to live in, work in and to
visit. Thank you for helping us keep Cobh litter free.

Do you have what it takes to be crowned Fort 2 Fort’s “King or
Queen of the Mountain”?
The 2018 Fort 2 Fort Charity Cycle Sportive takes place on Sunday, April 15th, and will raise
funds for the Mercy University Hospital Foundation, four Cork City and County Lions Clubs,
and Camden Fort Meagher Restoration.
As well as a number of new and exciting routes around Cork Harbour, this year’s Fort 2 Fort
Cycle Sportive includes a “King and Queen of the Mountain” challenge. Cyclists can test their
climbing skills as they tackle an intermediate timed-section uphill route of just over 500m on
Siddon’s Court Hill, or as the locals call it, Heartbreak Hill, in Aghada, with prizes for the best
times for the Top 3 Men and Top 3 Ladies.
With three routes to choose from, refreshments along the way, and incredible views of Cork
Harbour, the 2018 Fort 2 Fort Charity Cycle is an event not to be missed! The cycle will start
and finish in Fort Camden Meagher, Crosshaven, and cyclists can choose to tackle the 60km,
85km or 120km route.
Registration is now available online at www.mercyfundraising.ie. For anyone interested in participating,
registration is €45 for those who sign up online before 12 noon on April 13th, or at
Fort 2 Fort, now in its 7th year, has firmly established itself in the calendar of Cork’s cycling
enthusiasts of all abilities, offering a choice of distances. In 2017 the Fort 2 Fort cycle
raised €22,575; and since its inception, over 3,000 cyclists have participated, raising almost
€124,000 for the local beneficiaries.
Jim O’Connor, Chairman of this year’s Fort 2 Fort Cycle said “The cyclists are at the heart
of Fort 2 Fort’s success and we would like to thank them all for their outstanding support to
we have a choice of great new routes to offer riders of all levels, abilities, and ambitions a
challenging and enjoyable day.”
Thanks to the generous support of main sponsor Ulster Bank, as well as Cork County Council
PORT OF CORK PRIMARY SCHOOLS INITIATIVE FOCUSES ON CORK
CITY REGENERATION AS THE PORT PREPARES TO RELOCATE TO THE
LOWER HARBOUR
Calling all 5th Class Teachers – Win a Free Boat Trip around Cork Harbour for your class
The Port of Cork has launched their Primary Schools Initiative for 2018 aimed at 5th class
primary school children. Now in its 13th year, the theme of the Port of Cork Schools Initiative
is ‘Cork City Quays – This is Your City – How do you see the Docklands area looking 30 Years
from now?’
Port of Cork Chief Executive Mr Brendan Keating said: ‘This year’s theme is a little different to
previous years in that the school children are being asked to focus on the City Docks area. It
is our hope that as the Port of Cork prepares to relocate from a river port in the heart of the
city to a deep-water port operating in the lower harbour, the school children will explore the
history of the port in Cork City and how the relocation of port facilities will greatly change the
landscape of the City Quays. We hope schools will also explore Tivoli Docks and the exciting
potential that this river side land back could become.’
He continued: ‘The school children are the future and it will be exciting to see how they think
Cork Docks will look in the future!’
Each year the Port of Cork has over 30 schools from both Cork City and county participating in
the Schools Initiative and they hope that this year will be no different.
All 5th classes who take part in the Port of Cork Schools Initiative will be treated to a boat trip
around Cork harbour, compliments of the Port of Cork and each class will also receive a certificate
of participation. The overall ‘Best Project’ will receive a tour on board one of the many
luxurious cruise liners visiting Cork during the summer of 2018. In addition to this, an award
will also be given for ‘Best Artwork Piece’.
Projects are to be presented in artwork format using painting and/or models. All submitted
projects will go on public display in the Cobh Maritime Development building before the winner
is announced in May 2018. Closing date for entries is Friday 27th April 2018.
Local Frontline Workers and Volunteers played vital role during
Storm Emma – Minister David Stanton
Cork East Fine Gael TD and Minister of State at the Department of Justice, David Stanton has
praised the dedication of emergency service workers, other frontline staff, contractors and
volunteers in East and North Cork during the recent adverse weather conditions.
“Members of An Garda Síochána and the local Coastguard, in particular, played a vital role.
The Defence Forces and Civil Defence, who are made up of a network of over 3,500 volunteers
nationwide, were also used for transporting to hospital many patients with urgent medical
needs such as those requiring regular dialysis.
“They were on hand to assist other frontline services, such as the Gardaí, the Fire Brigade
and the Coastguard, with any duties required to keeping communities safe through their liaison
with the National and Regional Emergency Coordination Group who were responsible for
advising on capabilities and resources during the emergency period.
“In addition to assisting healthcare workers, the Defence Forces and Civil Defence also transferred
Cork County Council and Irish Water staff to facilitate water supply repairs. As we
have seen from the water restrictions in place in other areas around the country maintaining
and securing supply of this vital resource during adverse weather is a challenge”, said Minister
Stanton.
“The maintenance and repair crews of ESB networks who are responsible for preserving our
electricity supply should also be congratulated. They have worked tirelessly in very challenging
conditions to ensure that power was restored to all homes and businesses.
“Cork County Council and Transport Infrastructure Ireland staff did superb work enhancing
road safety by gritting, salting and clearing roads. The work of many local contractors, farmers
and volunteers who assisted Cork County Council was also invaluable to ensuring access
in towns and in the countryside.
“Finally, we should also recognise the work of other community groups, volunteers and the
public who assisted people at local level, including checking on neighbours and ensuing that
the elderly and infirm had sufficient food, water and fuel to keep them safe and well.
Friday 23rd March: John Blek At 8pm (doors 7.45pm) - Tickets €15
“I spent much of the early part of 2017 in and out of hospital with some mysterious illness
that was intent on wasting my now 30-year-old body. My energy was at an all-time low and
all that gave me joy had been stripped or put on hold. All but my guitar and what was left of
my feeble voice. So, to fill the days and occupy my mind, I wrote.
I wrote of resilience, of pain and uncertainty. Of new love through fevered dreams, of
strength, hope, distance, sedation and the cure. I did it every day and recorded the demos
sitting up in my hospital bed accompanied by the electronic bleeps of the machines and punctuated
by the nurse’s concerned enquiries.
I had a reason. For me this is cathartic. For me, this was the panacea.”
Catharsis Vol.1 is the third solo album from Cork, Ireland-based songwriter John Blek. Best
known for his work with his band John Blek & the Rats, John has begun a new journey influenced
by the folk music of Ireland, Britain and the US. With his solo work, he delves into the
world of fingerstyle guitar and reveals the deeply personal and poignant lyrical aspects of his
character.
John Blek’s Catharsis Vol.1 was released on the 6th October in Ireland (WARR) and in Europe
(Tonetoaster Records) on CD, gatefold heavyweight vinyl and digital formats.
Sustainable Futures: Runs until Sunday 01 April 2018
Curated and facilitated by Claire Ryan
What does the future hold for planet Earth and all life on it? How will it cope with the pressures
of a world that appears to prioritise unsustainable growth? Now more than ever, there
is an urgency for society as a whole to re-evaluate its relationship to our environment and to
recognise that individual as well as collective actions can make a difference.
If we do not share the common goal of sustainability, there is a very real threat that we will
suffer the consequences of our actions, or indeed our inactions, for generations to come.
Scientists offer valuable insights into the impact that excessive consumerism is having on the
earth’s ability to sustain life. However, ecologically sustainable societies cannot exist without
individuals who value the Earth, not merely as a place that exists to serve humankind, but
as a highly complex network of systems that we are part of, and the future of humankind is
dependent upon.
Sustainable Futures is a multi-part collaborative project, curated and facilitated by Claire Ryan
that seeks to open a dialogue around our environment and sustainability. The project encompasses
a group exhibition of work by artists Méadhbh O’ Connor, Fiona Kelly, David Thomas
Smith and Sarah Lincoln; a series of public talks by leading Irish research scientists from the
Environmental Research Institute (UCC) and the Centre for Marine and Renewable Energy
(UCC). A series of group workshops facilitated by locally based artists will examine and respond
to some of the ideas in the exhibition. YMCA Cobh will work with artist Colette Lewis,
the Green-Schools committee from Bunscoil Rinn an Chabhlaigh will work with artist Carol-
Anne Connolly, and a group of local participants will work with writer Billy O’Callaghan. The
outcomes of these collaborations will be presented and discussed in a public forum at Sirius
Arts Centre on Wednesday 28th March at 6.30pm.
This project is kindly supported by Cork County Council Creative Communities Scheme
Cork Harbour Cycle 4th March - Try A Long Cycle for Fun
Many people still confine their cycling to commuting to work or shops. Worse still many give
up cycling once school days are over. If the Bike to Work Scheme has been a Bike to Shed
scheme for you then here is a chance to enjoy it. Cycling can be a great leisure or sporting
activity. The Cork Harbour Cycle on Sunday 4th March is an opportunity to give it a try. The
route it takes has also introduced many to Cork harbour’s beautiful scenery with access to
much of it along waterfront paths. Escape to a peaceful nature reserve so close to the city.
Africa Direct organises the cycle using marshals and signage to ensure you don’t get lost.
Rosie Woods, a young cycling enthusiast and volunteer executive member says the cycle is
suitable for all. Ove the past 15 years we have had cyclists from 14 to 78 years, some who
dust off their bikes once a year for this event. Tom Connolly got his bicycle “Nellie” refurbished,
complete with basket, for the cycle 3 years ago and has cycled it every year since,
togged out in sports jacket and cravat. He likes to support Africa Direct because we can build
houses for €300. Adding to that a plot of land for €200 with some training to run a market
stall we have helped many families escape destitute slums and build happy, independent lives
at home in Kenya.
In addition to the leisure cycle of 40Km. around the flat waterfront taking 2 to 3 hours, there
is also a 100Km. circuit with plenty of challenging hills. Both routes use the ferry to Cobh,
kindly provided free of charge, to complete the circuit. A feeding station and refreshments to
enjoy a break and a reflector vest to add to your safety are provided. So all of you who only
cycle to work, come along for a lovely introduction to leisure cycling. For entry application see
www.africadirect.ie or email africadirect@gmail.com or phone 021 4806425.
Snow in Cobh in 2018
One of the most frequently asked questions by visitors to Cobh is, ‘do you ever get any snow
here?’. The most frequent response is ‘not very often and not very much of it’. The Palm trees
that line the main street along the town surprise visitors and in the sunshine can certainly impart
a hint of the tropics. This year however several generations of Cobh residents were to witness
one of the heaviest snowfalls in the general memory of the town. The confluence of biting
cold Easterly Arctic winds bringing incredibly heavy deposits of snow and the raging gales of
storm Emma coming from the South, combined to deliver blizzard like conditions usually associated
with much colder polar climates. Public Transport and a lot of business’s were impeded,
roads were blocked with snow drifts leading later to black ice and thousands of tons of melting
slush. All had to be overcome to deliver essential services. Despite the challenges many of the
small local stores remained open in loyalty to their daily customers.
The most interesting effect by far during those Arctic days in early March was that the spirit of
the townspeople seems to have been universally lifted. As it was impossible to drive cars in the
conditions, everybody was out walking. Walking gingerly across the newly blanketed white expanse,
walking and talking to each other, walking and sharing stories of burst pipes, discussing
the possibility of outages of power, offering assistance and advice on how to survive the snow
and much more. There was an uplifting of community bonding, a sense of shared adversity, a
collective joy at the fun and amazement being experienced by children playing in snow for the
first time in their young lives. For adults who had never had to shovel snow from their drives,
a whole suite of necessary chores were created. All said it was wonderful. The added bonus
was that our spectacularly photogenic town was enhanced even more. The shapes and contours
of architecturally preserved buildings were even more amazing draped in brilliant white.
The marked detail of vegetation and tree limbs delineated by fresh snowfall engaged the eye
and supplanted the mundane. After a couple of days, the novelty of having ‘snow days’ in front
of the fire wore off and reality had to be faced again. But for a brief period in March, the sentiment
certainly was….let it snow, let it snow, let in snow !!!
‘I can decide for myself what offends me on TV, thanks.’ - Trevor Laffan
There was a report on one of the Sunday papers recently suggesting
that the anti-tobacco lobby group, ASH, had criticised
RTE’s drama series Striking Out because some of the characters
were seen smoking cigarettes.
ASH chairman Patrick Doorley, revealed the lobby group had
written a letter of complaint to RTE about the “normalising”
of cigarettes through showing smoking on screen. It also contacted
the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland (BAI).
ASH says it is concerned about scenes in Striking Out which
portray two characters smoking heavily in an office. There
were two smoking scenes in the first episode of the second
series of the legal drama and the letter questions RTE’s policy
on the portrayal of smoking in their programmes.
Mr. Doorley is obviously a man with time on his hands. I get that he doesn’t like smoking and
would like to stamp it out and, he’s concerned that we might be rushing outside to light up
once the programme is over.
But I can make up my own mind and it annoys me that he is trying to influence what the rest
of us can or can’t watch on TV. I presume the programme in question is trying to be realistic
when depicting scenes of ordinary life and, in the real world, some people do smoke and to
ignore that fact would be a bit foolish.
Colin Coyle had a piece in the Sunday Times about another complaint that was made to the
BAI.
A lady called Niamh Turley, made a complaint about a scene on the RTE2 comedy show
Bridget & Eamon in which Eamon, a character with ginger hair and a ginger beard, suggested
going upstairs with Bridget’s mother. She responded: “With the lights off so I can’t tell that
you’re ginger.”
Turley complained that this remark was “racist” and demonstrated “discrimination and prejudice
against people with different hair colour”. She argued such casual racism promoted bullying
against redheads, leading to “alienation”.
Thankfully, the BAI used some common sense and said that suggesting someone with ginger
hair is unattractive does not constitute discrimination and concluded that “people with red
hair are not considered a separate ‘race’ or group in society”, and therefore did not require
specific protection under the BAI code.
Where is this nonsense going to end?
I watched a film on TV the other night called Calvary with Brendan Gleeson and it was made
in Sligo. In one scene, Brendan, who plays the part of a priest, went to the pub and drank his
loaf off. It was an excellent scene, but it didn’t encourage me to go down to my local and get
plastered.
Two other guys in the pub with him were sharing a joint. I have never smoked cannabis or
injected myself with heroin and that scene didn’t send me to to the dark net or to my nearest
drug dealer to get a fix.

There was another character in the film who was in prison and from what I could gather, he
had eaten some of his victims. An Irish version of Hannibal Lecter if you like. Brendan Gleeson
went to visit him in the prison because he asked to see a priest. Brendan went along with
the request thinking that the guy was looking for forgiveness for having these strange dietary
requirements.
They had a chat and the villain of the piece explained how he thought that human flesh tasted
like turkey meat. Whether it does or not I have absolutely no idea and neither do I have any
desire to find out. Having watched this footage, I am no more inclined to go out and eat my
neighbour than I was before I saw it.
There was another scene where the priest went to the pub and he had a bit of a row with the
publican. He pulled out a gun and started taking pot shots at the various optics and bottles
behind the bar. There were bullets and broken glass flying in all directions.
I enjoy going to Tom Kelly’s for a quiet pint and I think I get on ok with the gang there. We
might disagree on some things from time to time but, I can assure Mr. Doorley, that I’m not
likely to head off to the pub with my AK47 even after watching this film.
The film ended with Brendan Gleeson confronting the villain of the film, on a beach. That
demented soul had been abused by a priest in his younger days and carried a lot of hatred
towards the clergy around with him. He had issues.
He decided that the best way for him to resolve those issues was to kill Brendan, so he pulled
out a gun and shot him in the head spilling blood and guts onto the sand.
If a person had a mind to, they could find a lot to crib about in that film. Sligo Tidy Towns
could have an issue with depicting the beach as being a suitable location for spreading human
innards. Gun clubs could moan that firearms were being used to promote violence. Pacifists
could be offended by the portrayal of violence as a way of solving problems.
If the cribbers had their way, this film would never have seen the light of day. To meet their
standards the entire film would have been shot in one room with Brendan Gleeson talking to
himself. He wouldn’t have cursed, he wouldn’t have had a drink, he wouldn’t have had a gun
and he wouldn’t have made a mess on the beach.
It’s television, it’s entertainment, it’s make believe and most of us can decide for ourselves
the difference between reality and fiction. I personally don’t need Mr. Doorley, Ms. Turley or
anyone else acting as a censor on my behalf.
The Ballymore Cobh Athletic Club Report
It was a hectic weekend for Ballymore Cobh A.C., as we had club members scurrying hither
and thither to train, race and support others.
Sat 11th of March was D-Day for a group of our newest members, as their 7 week Fit4Life programme,
designed to introduce beginners to running (or, indeed, reintroduce lapsed practitioners
to the joys of worship at the alter of athleticism), took place in Whitepoint with a 5k run,
followed up with coffee, chat and giant scones at the Commodore Hotel.
Simultaneously, on the far side of Cork Harbour, 7 headbangers ran a 20 mile training run in
testing conditions along the former Passage West railway line in preparation for April’s Rotterdam
Marathon.
Karen Geasley, Leilia Pender, Lynne Doherty, Deirdre Meyler, Stephen Ryan, Brendan Ryan &
Shane Meyler - the doctor will see you now!
Flung far and wide across the province on Sun 12th of March, 4 of our athletes took on the
Crosshaven 5k; Corrina O’Mahony, Ann Cooke (club debut), Oliver Baumann (club debut) and
Jennifer Goggin-Walsh, who topped the bill with a magnificent 1st place finish!
Opting for the Crosshaven 10k were Carol Leahy, Leilia Pender, Natasha Durity, Angela McCall
and John O’Brien, who capped off an excellent showing with 3rd place O/45.
Across Munster in the scenic west Waterford town of Dungarvan, the Déise College 10k was
where young Kate Kennedy made her debut for the club in fine style indeed.
Even further afield, Trevor Cummins landed himself in the Iberian peninsula, got himself kitted
out took part among many thousands of others in the Lisbon Half Marathon. An impressive
1:25 time was the result of his efforts even though he had to contend with serious swathes of
wind and rain over the 13.1 miles.
And for good measure: the famous Ballycotton 10 is no more, but that didn’t preclude our own
Ber Navin from running it anyway on it’s regular race date. She fell in with a gang from Ballintotis
Fit4Life who ran the full course. Sure, why wouldn’t ya?
Spike Island built a bridge to China by going red for the EU – China
tourism year initiative last weekend.
Spike Island Cork built a bridge to China this weekend by lighting up the Fort entrance in the
red of the Chinese flag on Saturday 10th March. The iconic fort entrance, which saw tens of
thousands of prisoners and soldiers pass beneath its arch, was transformed from stone grey to
red to mark the event. Some pre-booked visitors on an After Dark tour and Cinema club visit
to the island were able to experience the event, which will be shown in China to mark EU –
China cooperation, with a reciprocal event planned in China around EU day in May.
Eco-friendly Chinese lanterns were released to coincide with the Chinese lantern festival.
The occasion was part of the ‘EU pillar of light bridge’ event where landmarks across Europe
will light up in red to coincide with the lantern festival in China. 2018 is the EU – China year of
tourism, with great efforts underway to increase the number of visitors going in both directions,
and cooperation by both countries tourism bodies.
Visitor from China to Europe tripled in the last 10 years and Chinese visitors to Ireland grew by
10000 to 70000 in 2017. The introduction of new routes from Dublin to Hong Kong, the first
ever direct flights from Ireland to China, are expected to see these numbers grow rapidly, with
double digit growth predicted.
The introduction of a UK – Ireland visa scheme which allows Chinese visitors to enter both
countries with the one visa is also being credited with driving numbers. With Chinese visitors
becoming the single largest market in the world for outbound visitors in 2017, with over 100
million heading abroad, such links are seen as vital to ensure Europe and Ireland benefit from
the rising Chinese tide.
Spike Island was named Europe’s Leading Tourist Attraction of 2017 and the Cork County
Council site became one of the first attractions in Ireland to be Chinese Outbound Tourism
approved in 2017, certifying the island as ready to welcome Chinese visitors with greetings,
social media options and practices. Island Manager John Crotty commented “Chinese visitors
are set to be a huge contributor to Irish tourism and some sites in the UK are already seeing
up to 10% of their visitors coming from China. It is vital that Irish sites are prepared for what
is likely to be rapid growth in this area, and getting COTRI approved is a great first step”.
The island hopes to add an International Welcome Hub as part of its phase 2 upgrades, which
would include Chinese language information options for Chinese visitors. The island is currently
open on weekends until May, when it will be open for 7 days a week until the end of
September.
COLAISTE MUIRE NEWS
This week our senior ladies played St. Fanahans Michelstown in the quarter final of the Cork
championship. From the start, this was a very entertaining and tight game with the lead
changing hands numerous times in the first half. On the stroke of half time, Cobh struck for a
fantastic goal to put them 2 points ahead at half time. 2-4 to 2-2.
St Fanahans dominated the start of the second half, getting 2 goals in as many minutes to
stretch into the lead. However Colaiste Muire never gave up, the defence breaking up attack
after attack, our midfield covering every blade of grass and the forwards kicking some nice
points to keep the scoreboard ticking over.
As the clock ticked towards full time, Cobh got their just reward with two more goals. Unfortunately
it was too late and the win was beyond their grasp. Final score 5-8 to 4-7. This ends
the school ladies football season for Colaiste Muire but the performance today leaves plenty
optimism going into next year. To the seven sixth years Chloe, Amy, Ellen, Jayne, Laura, Orna
and Rachel, thanks for your fantastic commitment and dedication to ladies football over the
past four years. Well done all.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Over the last few weeks 5th Year students
from Coláiste Muire and Carrignafoy Community
College have been taking part in the Faith Friends
programme under the guidance of Sr. Emmanuel.
They have been working towards helping this years confirmation
candidates to prepare for their confirmation on April
14th.
Last night they had their mass of initiation in St Colman’s
Cathedral. Well done to all the candidates, we wish them
the very best of luck as they begin their work with the confirmation
candidates this week.

COBH WANDERERS NEWS
Junior League Result: Blarney United 2-6 Cobh Wanderers.
The juniors came from behind twice to record an emphatic victory over Blarney tonight.
Despite being on the attack Wanderers conceded after two minutes when the defence were
caught square by a straight ball down the middle and the Blarney forward neatly lifted it over
the keeper into the net. Andy Hogan levelled on eight minutes meeting a cross by Darren Cronin
and heading powerfully to the net. Blarney retook the lead soon after with a free header
from a corner. Wanderers drew level on 21 minutes when Darren Cronin scored from the
spot after Ian Murphy was upended in the box. A crazy spell of scoring ended with Wanderers
taking the lead on 25 minutes. Cormac Downing played a great ball through to Brady who
was shoved over on the edge of the box. Darren Sylvester took the free kick and curled a left
footer around the wall and when the keeper fumbled Damo Brady was on hand to finish easily.
Another foul on Brady brought a free kick 25 yards out on 40 minutes. Ian Murphy stepped up
to bend the ball around the wall to the top right-hand corner of the goal for a superb finish and
the goal of the game. The second half was a much tamer affair until the appearance of John
Kennedy from the bench in the 77th minute. The move of the half on 84 minutes saw Damo
cut through the home defence and feed Kennedy who saw his effort blocked by the keeper
before the follow up strike from Cronin was blocked away. Kinsey passed to Kennedy down the
right on 88 minutes and his cross from the by-line picked out Damo who headed to the net
from almost under the post. Kennedy rounded off the scoring with a deserved goal in the final
minute. A superb ball from Jordan Griffin on the right evaded the defender and fell to Kennedy
who shifted the ball before chipping a left foot effort beyond the keeper and ensure Blarney
were hit for six. A great win for the lads and an important three points to keep the momentum
going. Well done to all involved.
Team: Michael Walsh, Farrell O’ Connor (Gary Meade 56), Cormac Downing, Andy Hogan,
Tony O’ Donovan, Owen Kinsella, Alan Stapleton, Darren Sylvester (Jordan Griffin 69), Damien
Brady, Darren Cronin, Ian Murphy (John Kennedy 77).
Scorers: Andy Hogan 8, Darren Cronin 21(pen), Damien Brady 25, &88, Ian Murphy 40, John
Kennedy 90. Blarney: 2nd &12th minutes.
Darren Cronin and Andy hogan scored crucial goals for Wanderers tonight.

Ramblers U19s are ready for action!
There’s a new man at the helm for Cobh Ramblers U19s this year but it’s a familiar face in
the club’s former U17 manager Ethan McCarthy. After a spell coaching in the US the former
Carrigaline United coach is back at St Colman’s Park and rearing to go in his second term with
Cobh. Last year’s u19 head coach Dec Coleman has moved on to the backroom staff of Cobh’s
senior side.
This year’s Young Rams will do well to better their performances last season when they won
the Southern Division and reached the final four of the Enda McGuill Cup. One negative note
was getting knocked out by St Pat’s in the first round of the league knockout stages and that’s
clearly an area they will look to improve on.
Consistency is a huge help at this level and only two of last year’s squad are overage this year,
Scott McCarthy, and midfielder David Hurley who is now a pivotal member of Ramblers’ senior
set-up. The remainder of the squad were all born in 1999 or later and there is a familiar look
to this season’s squad. The likes of Conor Hogan, Matthew Lamb and Ryan O’Regan will all look
to push on after a strong debut year with the u19s. Promotion from within is a common feature
amongst Ramblers sides and no less than seven members of Damien Rowe’s u17 side last
year have been included in the u19 squad for 2018. Goalkeeper Arthur Nguefang, defenders
Kyle Murphy and Adam Crowley and midfielders Cameron Harlson and Connor O’Leary all make
the step up, as do strikers Jaze Kabia and Beineon O’Brien Whitmarsh who are also in Stephen
Henderson’s senior squad.
There are a few new faces who have arrived with Munster Senior League experience. Defender
Greg Barrett has been added from Blarney United while the impressive Nathan Broderick joins
from Rockmount. Sean O’Driscoll has signed from Leeside with well-regarded striker Eoin Murphy
arriving from St Mary’s alongside Craig McSweeney.
Goalkeeper Conor Hogan was a key member of last year’s u19 squad having joined from
neighbours Cork City at the beginning of 2017. The Blarney native has enjoyed getting back
into the swing of things in recent weeks and is looking forward to the new campaign. “Preseason
has gone very well so far. We came back early and hopefully that will count over the
season. A lot of last year’s squad is still here but we’ve added in some high-quality players.
We’re bonding well and getting to know each-other.”
The first year student in UCC has already enjoyed a stellar career at League of Ireland underage
level having spent two years at Cork City prior to joining Cobh in 2017, “This is my fourth
season playing League of Ireland and my last at u19 level so hopefully I can end it with a
trophy. We were disappointed with how last season finished off and will look to push on from
that. I’m injured at the moment but can’t wait to get back playing and helping us to do well
this year.”
One of the new faces in the door at St Colman’s Park is midfielder Sean O’Driscoll who signed
from Leeside’s senior side. He’s enjoying his time with Ramblers so far and adjusting well to
the step-up, “From the minute I arrived the coaches and the lads on the team have welcomed
me in. It was a bit difficult getting used to new surroundings and a different standard of football
but slowly I’ve gotten used to the style and the tempo at this level. Pre-season has gone
well and we’ve worked hard as a team putting in the hours. We’re getting used to each-other
as players and improving with every game. Hopefully we can bring that form into the first
game of the season against Wexford. It’s a game that we’re all really looking forward to.”
The squad have undergone a healthy pre-season over the past few weeks and open their
league campaign away to Wexford the weekend of March 25th. Their first home game is
against Cabinteely the following week before meetings with Limerick, UCD and the famous
derby with Cork City. It’s all set up to be another thrilling season for the club’s u19s against
the nation’s top sides and don’t be surprised to see them competing at the top end once again
in 2018.

IRELAND SOUTH MEP DEIRDRE CLUNE ENCOURAGES YOUNG IRISH PEOPLE
TO CONSIDER EUROPEAN SOLIDARITY CORPS
Volunteer Programme to Work on Projects across Europe Open to Ireland’s Young People
Young people interested in volunteering abroad are being invited to sign up to the European
Solidarity Corps, a new initiative which connects young volunteers to work in projects in their
own country or abroad that benefit communities and people around Europe
Ireland South MEP Deirdre Clune is highlighting the new programme to young people as a
great opportunity to do rewarding work, travel, gain valuable experience, learn and have fun.
The scheme brings together for the first time both volunteering and professional opportunities,
like internships and apprenticeships, in a wide-range of sectors
From rebuilding schools after an earthquake, to working with disabled people in their communities
to supporting newly arrived asylum seekers, young people from across Europe aged
between 18 and 30 years can spend from 2 to 12 months on full time volunteering projects,
an apprenticeship or traineeship with NGOs, public bodies and organisations working in these
fields. Financial support for travel, accommodation and meals, medical insurance and a small
amount to cover day to day living expenses is provided.
“I would encourage young people in Ireland to take the opportunity to be part of this exciting
initiative. Whether it’s 8 weeks or 8 months, it is a wonderful opportunity to experience different
places, cultures and situations within Europe, and to help people and communities across
Europe whilst having a valuable opportunity to learn and develop new skills and experiences,”
said Deirdre Clune, Ireland South MEP.
After completing a simple registration process, participants from 18 up to 30 years of age,
can be selected and invited to join a wide range of projects, such as helping communities in
need, asylum seekers, disaster prevention or disaster recovery. For more information on the
European Solidarity Corps, visit www.europa.eu/youth/solidarity

COBH GAA NOTES
In difficult playing conditions Cobh overcame a determined Carrigtwohill team with a patient
and disciplined performance which saw them secure the game in only the final 5 minutes.
Full Time Score An Cobh: 0-7(7) Carrigtwohill: 0-5 (5)
Cobh scored first with a pointed free from Cian Spriggs,
but were defending for much of the half, limiting Carrigtwohill
to just two points. As half time approached
Cian pointed a second free to level proceeding at half
time. Half Time Score An Cobh: 0-2(2)
Carrigtwohill: 0-2(2)
Carrigtwohill took a one point lead shortly after the
break but Cobh responded immediately with two points
from play from Lee Murphy and John Gardiner. A series
of Carrigtwohill attacks saw them secure two points and
several wides. With five to go we were down one point,
but in a strong last 5 minutes, we scored three points
all from the boot of Cian Spriggs. Of note in this final five minutes, was our discipline. Players
maintained their calm, despite the challenging and heightened circumstances, we won our
frees, did not retaliate, and scored our points. It displayed a confidence, and the type of calm
leadership and team focus that will be important going forward.
Full Time Score An Cobh: 0-7(7) Carrigtwohill 0-5(5)
