Decision to Approve Ringaskiddy Incinerator is very disappointing –
Stanton
Cork East Fine Gael TD and Minister of State at the Department of Justice, David Stanton,
has expressed his disappointment that An Bord Pleanala has granted planning permission for
an incinerator at Ringaskiddy. The waste-to-energy incinerator will be built and operated by
Indaver Ireland Ltd.
Minister Stanton said: “It was with great sadness that I learned this morning of An Bord
Pleanala’s decision to not accept the An Bord Pleanala Inspector’s report and so to grant permission
for the development of an incinerator at Ringaskiddy.
“I have been opposed to this project from the start as I believe it will a have a negative impact
not just on the current, but also on future plans for the harbour area.
“The incinerator will be developed at a 13.55 hectare site and will be used to treat both hazardous
and non-hazardous waste. I believe, like many local people and my Oireachtas colleagues,
that Cork Harbour is not the best location for this project.
“The Cork area is home to hundreds of thousands of people and hundreds of millions euro has
been invested in clean and renewable energy research, a greatly improved new Cork Harbour
wastewater project by Irish Water, the clean-up of and future plans for Haulbowline East Tip
and also in tourist attractions such as Spike Ireland.
“I am sure that many of my constituents in Cork East and people across the entire harbour
area will share in my disappointment of today’s decision,” the Fine Gael Minister said.

Cobh honours 20 Sailors and all those who served in World War 1
A Remembrance Service and unveiling of a Monument took place in Cobh, on Saturday 2nd of
June, to honour the 20 sailors Cobh lost at The Great Sea Battle of Jutland in 1916 and recognising
all those who served in World War 1.
A joint service held in St. Colman’s Cathedral, Cobh, was hosted by Father John McCarthy,
Catholic Church and Reverend Paul Arbuthnot, Church of Ireland, highlighting that the whole
community was affected by the tragic loss of life at Jutland. A packed Cathedral watched as
a joint blessing then took place of twenty sailor’s caps, each representing the rank of those
Cobh men killed in action on the 31st of May/1st of June 1916. This included Commander
Richard Herbert Denny Townsend, the highest-ranking Irishman to die at Jutland.
Ms Eithne Wright, Chairwoman of the Jutland Memorial Society said “It was a very dignified
and emotional service”. Ms Wright is the great niece of Shipwright William McGrath lost on
HMS Queen Mary that day.
Following the Remembrance Service, a short procession led by Piper Adam Duggan, a symbolic
Pall Bearer detachment from the Irish Naval Service Reserve, the flag standards of the
Royal Naval Association of Ireland were followed by descendants carrying the twenty sailor’s
caps to the Bible Gardens of the Benedictine Nuns, St Benedict’s Priory, former British Admiralty
House.
There a Monument to their sacrifice was unveiled by County Mayor, Councillor Declan Hurley
at 3pm. It was jointly blessed by Father John McCarthy and the Reverend Paul Arbuthnot.
Wreaths were laid and a Bugler sounded the Last Post. This was followed by a 2-minute
silence which was concluded with a bell being rung 8 times, traditionally used to mark the
change of the duty watch on ships.
The event was concluded by Chev. Adrian Gebruers of St. Colman’s Cathedral where the
service began. At 4.03pm, marking the time the HMS Indefatigable sank, he played on the
Carillon Bells, the evocative “For Those in Peril at Sea” by John Dykes (1823-76) and then
at 4.25pm, marking the sinking of HMS Queen Mary, the beautiful “Abide with Me” by William
Monk (1823-89). All those gathered in the Bible Gardens had a grandstand seat for this
unique performance with beautiful views across a sunny harbour.
Bakestone Cafe, the popular East Cork cafe, have just announced a series of concerts for the
summer season at the historical Fota House, Arboretum and Gardens on Fota Island in East
Cork. Live at Fota House is a five concert series featuring some of Ireland’s best loved folk
artists including Martin Hayes & Dennis Cahill (Thursday 14th June), Jack L (Saturday 14th
July), Cork’s own White Horse Guitar Club (Friday 24th August) and Declan O’Rourke (Friday
5th October). Tall Tales and Tall Trees, a weekend long autumnal festival celebration, will also
take place as part of the series from the 7th to the 9th of September - the line-up for this
weekend is set to be announced in July!
The 80 capacity drawing room at Fota House is a beautifully ornate room, an intimate space
for a series that no doubt will attract music lovers from East Cork and beyond. Tickets for all
concerts are priced at €30. Doors for each show open at 7pm and concerts start at 7.30pm
with a 10pm curfew (including a half hour interval for refreshments). The Bakestone team will
also be serving charcuterie boards, wine and craft beer on the night for what is promising to
be a unique concert experience!
Bakestone Cafe (a sister business to Ballincollig’s renowned gastropub and music venue, The
White Horse), recently took over the cafe space at Fota House and open from 10 - 5 Monday
to Sunday serving their much-loved selection of savoury and sweet treats, tea and coffee.
Located just 1.5 miles from their headquarters at Fota Retail Village in Carrigtwohill, the cafe
has become a hugely popular destination for a great brunch or lunch. Their new Pantry ( located
at HQ) features an array of artisan, Irish products, many of which are created by local,
East Cork suppliers. A concert destination with a difference, audiences are encouraged to get
the train from Cork Kent to Fota (€5.40 for a return journey). Why not arrive early and enjoy
a tour around Fota House and the beautifully restored Victorian Working Garden, which can
be arranged by phoning 021-4815543 in advance to book. Tickets for all shows can be bought
New boat tour of Cork harbour launches with a splash!
A new 72-seater tour boat has been launched for the summer season connecting Cobh and
Cork City. Ocean Escapes, a Cork-based company, is investing €1/2 million in the new service
and will operate daily guided tours of the harbour from Cobh to Cork City and Cork to Cobh,
with a return by rail option, until September.
Locals and visitors alike will enjoy the experience, which will include the sights, sounds and
stories of the harbour, told in a fun and theatrical way by engaging guides.
Highlights along the ancient port waterways will include breath-taking views and famous landmarks
such as Crosshaven, Rochespoint Lighthouse, Blackrock Castle, Spike Island Prison,
Camden Fort Meagher, Haulbowline Naval Base (Ireland’s only Naval Base), Blackrock Castle,
Martello Towers, Lord Inchiquin and the Royal Cork Yacht Club, the World’s first Yacht Club,
and Cobh, the last port of call for the Titanic, and more. Passengers will also learn about
Cork’s fascinating maritime history and hear unique stories about each of the towns, villages
and islands along the harbour. Cork has a wealth of maritime wildlife and you might even see
dolphins or whales along the way.
Commenting Seamus Heaney, Head of Visit Cork, said, “Cork is Ireland’s Maritime Haven, set
in a beautiful coastal environment with a significant maritime history spanning over a thousand
years. It is also ideally situated between two of the best experiences in Ireland – the
Wild Atlantic Way and Ireland’s Ancient East.
“There is a gap in the market for a tour that connects Cork City and Cobh and provides access
to our harbour and rich maritime history in an engaging and interactive way. Services like
this will open up new markets and help retain tourists and cruise passengers in Cork when
they arrive. This is a fantastic initiative and it sits perfectly within the new Pure Cork brand
that was recently launched and the Ireland’s Ancient East touring route.”
Also commenting, Lawrence Owens, CEO of Cork Business Association, said, “There has been
a huge demand from the business community for a tourism offering that connects the city
with Cobh, in order to tap into the huge potential that the cruise market offers, so we are
delighted to welcome this development.”
Ocean Escapes is already well known for operating successful rib tours in the harbour. This
new venture is a partnership with another local company, Cool Running Events, who are
known for delivering exceptional entertainment with Cork on Ice and The Nightmare Realm,
and business man Daniel O’Donoghue, who will operate as Ocean Escape’s marine engineer
and technician.
Speaking at the launch, Andrew O’Riordan, Owner/Director of Ocean Escapes, said, ‘We are
delighted that Cork is being promoted as a maritime haven and hope this new tour offers
tourists and locals alike a new and exciting experience on our harbour. So far, we have got
incredible support from all the key stakeholders in Cork and we hope everyone continues to
spread the word about the Ocean Escapes Harbour Tours.”
The new tour takes 1.5hrs and will run from Thursday 31st May to Sunday 2nd September,
sailing from Cork City at 11:30 and 16:00 and from Cobh at 9.00, 14:00 and 18:00. (People
are advised to check the website for accurate daily timings as times may change for cruise
ships). Tour packages are cleverly paired with return rail connections, allowing visitors to take
in the sights of Cork city or Cobh before returning to their origin. Prices start from €16.
The tour boat is also available for private booking and for transport to and from events like
concerts in Pairc Uí Chaoimh or weddings, hens and stag parties.
COBH CLASSIC CAR CLUB - Great Island Motors Cobh Classic 2018
The 7th running of the Cobh Classic will take place on Saturday 23rd of June 2018 This event
which began as the Titanic Classic in 2012 to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the sinking
of the great ship has established it’s place as one of the premier dates in the classic car
calendar. Up to 50 cars, some over 100 years old, will traverse the roads of East Cork on a 60
mile route which has been designed to take in some spectacular scenery on smooth roads in
deference to the age profile of the participating cars.
Cobh Classic Car Club are once again delighted to welcome Great Island Motors, for a fifth
year, as main sponsor. Trophies for Best Car and Furthest Travelled, plus lots of spot prizes
from our very generous sponsors.
The event will start from the Commodore Hotel in Cobh at 11.30 and will follow a route via
Midleton and Cloyne to a coffee break at Garryvoe Beach. Thereafter the route continues via
Shanagarry, Ladysbridge, Castlemartyr and back to Cobh at 4pm, where the cars will be on
display in the town centre, while the crews enjoy a post event meal and prizegiving ceremony
at the Commodore Hotel
Check-in for the event is from 09.30 and the cost of entry is €25 (three course meal included).
Cobh has always had connections to motor sport in various guises, one of those was in the
late 70’s and early 80’s in the form of The Commodore Hotel Rally. In its first three years as a
Rallying tour, took place on the roads of Great Island, and stretching out towards Carrigtwohill
and surrounding areas.
The event later moved to Fota Island where it became known as Commodore Hotel Rally
Sprint. The event was highly successful and funds raised from the events contributed in a big
way to the setting up of what is now Fota Wildlife Park. The event continued at Fota for a number
of years until insurance costs became excessive and the event had to be cancelled.
It’s quite possible that some of the cars taking part in the June event may have taken part
in those rallies, certainly quite a few of the event organisers were also organisers and indeed
participants in those exciting days of Cobh motorsport.
Cobh Classic Car Club was founded in 2011 with the goal of bringing together those with an
interest in vintage and classic cars. Members don’t need to own an old car, just have an interest
them.
The club meets in the Commodore hotel at 8pm on the second Wednesday of every month and
during summer months organises evening drives to local places of interest.
‘Where is the Cobh Council?’ - Trevor Laffan
I like to keep up to date with what’s going on in the world, but I sometimes slip up. For
example, town councils were abolished in this country in 2014 and that piece of news passed
me by. To be fair though, I was living abroad at the time and I offer that as an excuse.
The abolition of town councils was led out by Phil Hogan
as part of the Coalition’s political reform programme and it
was heralded by him as being the biggest shake-up of local
government in the history of the State. There are few who
would argue that they needed a shake-up but doing away
with them completely was different kettle of fish.
Councils came in for a lot of stick across the country and
those of a certain vintage will remember that Frank Hall ran
a very popular sketch on his weekly TV programme “Halls
Pictorial Weekly.” This was a satirical show that highlighted
the strange goings-on in Ballymagash Urban District Council.
It presented an exaggerated view of monthly council meetings
in Ireland and how various issues were dealt with.
There were some insiders who said that it was very close to the bone and it was rumoured
that many politicians wanted the programme to be withdrawn.
Apparently, the plan to abolish the local councils was opposed by councillors themselves, as
well as many chamber of commerce groups and others who said it would lead to a weakening
of local democracy. In any event, they were replaced with new municipal district councils,
which are much larger entities, encompassing both urban and rural areas.
And so it came to pass that, as and from the 1st June 2014, Cobh Town Council was abolished
and a new sub county local government structure, in the form of Cobh-Glanmire Municipal
District, was established. But where are they?
In Cobh, we have a beautiful building at the entrance to the town, called Carrig House and for
years that was the home of the Urban District Council and latterly Cobh Town Council. It was
the seat of power, our very own version of the White House.
But since we joined up with Glanmire, I don’t know where the new HQ is. Do we still have
part of a council operating from Carrig House or have all the staff just upped sticks and
headed for Riverstown? Do they still carry out some functions or does everything have to go
through the Cork County Council?
I’m only asking because there is a widely held belief around town, that making contact with
someone in the local mortuary would be easier than finding a life source in Carrig House. And
that’s a pity because it would be nice to have a chat with them about some of their decisions.
For instance, a new taxi queuing system was created on the Low Road in Cobh last year complete
with designated parking bays and signage. The road was nicely painted, marking out
about 20 spaces for taxis, and while it all looked very pretty, it was obvious to anyone with
the IQ of a log that this was never going to work. And it didn’t.
So, this year, another team of workers removed the signage from the newly erected poles and
burned the markings off the roadway. The whole episode was a waste of time and money.
There are other signs visible around the town, warning dog owners not to allow their pets to
foul the public areas. The message is clear enough; if you don’t clean up after your dog, you
face a fine of up to a maximum of €3000.

The public walkways, from one end of the town to the other, are littered with dog crap. It’s
unsightly, it’s unhealthy and it’s unfair to those of us who don’t have dogs. It’s also unfair to
those responsible dog owners who clean up after their pets and it’s an insult to the people
involved the Tidy Towns initiative.
There is also an abundance of dogs roaming freely around the town and owners of these animals
have no fear of being fined and for a very good reason.
It took a considerable effort to get information but when I did, it wasn’t very encouraging.
The council informed me that only two fines for dog fouling had been issued in ‘recent years’
and they say that it is impossible to police.
Well what was the point of putting warning notices all over the town if the law is not going to
be enforced? Individual councillors have told me that they have been banging this particular
drum for years, but they have yet to come up with a solution.
In 2016, I wrote a letter to the Municipal Council to ask about the possibility of getting a disabled
parking space outside my mother-in-laws house. She was 97 years old at the time and
the parking is chaotic where she lives so it can be difficult to get her into a car.
At this stage, she’s close to getting a cheque from the President for her 100 birthday, but I
still haven’t heard from the council. I rang them a few times and I was guaranteed that my
message would be passed to the appropriate person. I still haven’t heard anything, which is
why I’m wondering if the appropriate person is even there.
Maybe they have all gone to Glanmire or Carrignavar and maybe the poor woman answering
the phone is all alone in the building. If that’s the case, then someone should break the news
to her, so she can turn out the lights and go home for herself.
Frank Hall was ahead of his time and his take on the Ballymagash Urban District Council is as
relevant today as it ever was.
JOHNNY CASH TRIBUTE CONCERT AT SPIKE ISLAND PRISON
Spike Island Cork are inviting Cork’s rebels to be inmates for an evening as the island recreates
the infamous ‘Folsom prison’ gig played by Johnny Cash 50 years ago this year. Johnny
Cash’s prison performances became legendary in musical circles as he played to some of the
most hardened criminals in America at Folsom prison. The Man in Black became forever linked
to these prison gigs and this Spike Island gig will recreate his prison escapade.
Filling the shoes of the infamous performer will be ‘Strictly Cash’, who have previously recreated
a prison gig in Dublin. In 2008 for the 40th anniversary of Johnny Cash’s legendary concert
at California’s notorious Folsom Prison, they decided to mark the occasion in Dublin’s Mountjoy
Prison.
Now, 10 years later, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of that Folsom Prison concert,
STRICTLY CASH will be together again on Cork’s own Alcatraz, Fort Mitchell, Spike Island. Special
guests will be country rockabilly band from Holland, the Black Suspenders.
Also playing on the night will be Dutch band the Black Suspenders, who are flying in from Holland
for the gig. The four strong rockabilly band re-create the original SUN rockabilly sound
and add their own flavour, playing country rockabilly in a pumpin’, steady style. Having regularly
toured mainland Europe, this will be a first time visit for Black Suspenders, and supporting
Strictly Cash they have put together a fitting program to remember the SUN era and the
Man In Black.
Tickets are on sale by advance booking only from www.spikesislandcork.ie as Spike Island
gives Cork the chance to hear all the hits including those made famous from the concerts at
San Quentin and Folsom Prison.
Boats depart at 5pm and 6pm from Kennedy pier Cobh with a short tour and then the
concert before returns at 9.10pm and 9.30pm.

“Energy awareness today, Strategies for tomorrow”
If you’ve ever visited an indoor pool, and enjoyed the year-round warmth of the water, you’ve
probably never even considered the cost of heating a volume of water and air that size.
But as the operators of any pool are aware, the energy costs are amongst the highest costs in
running the business.
As such Coral Leisure, in partnership with
Cork County Council, are always trying to
reduce the energy costs to ensure the sustainability
of Coral Leisure Cobh Ltd and to
reduce our carbon footprint.
Uniquely Coral Leisure has a dedicated
Energy Champion for the whole group, and
led by this champion, Coral Leisure sought
out assistance from ESB Smart Energy Services.
Their brief was straightforward, if not
simple: find ways to reduce annual energy
consumption. This meant cutting usage from 1,200 kWh/m2 to 900 kWh/m2
“Energy is the biggest cost to the Leisure Centre after wages. We create about 4,500 tonnes of
greenhouse gas emissions every year around the 9 Centres.
Last year we cut that by 400 tonnes and we expect to cut another 400 tonnes this year.
The 4 biggest users of energy are the air circulating fans, the pool circulating water pumps,
the sauna/steam room and the lights.”
Siobhan Tighe, Managing Director of the Coral Leisure Group, explains what we do “Coral
Leisure puts energy and environmental awareness to the forefront of their operations. We
conduct regular energy conservation audits and evaluations of our centres and our Energy
Management Strategies are in place across the group. In addition we design and implement
relevant site specific solutions, ensuring industry best practice and continuing financial savings
to our clients. We advise on relevant Government grant availability and assist in the application
process on your behalf.”
In the last year alone Coral Leisure has undertaken projects in every one of the centres aimed
at reducing energy costs and increasing energy efficiency. Simple measures like installing new
Pool Covers and installing modern energy efficient LED lighting in all centres can make an
initial huge difference to energy costs.
Coral Leisure also undertakes more complex projects such as installing De-strat Fans, (which
push warm air back down into pool halls keeping heating costs down) and computerised Business
Energy Management Systems (which automatically control heating, lighting, pump speeds
and air handling depending on the time of day and customer usage levels).
Coral Leisure also believes all of these measures go hand in hand with providing ongoing staff
training in the importance of energy saving. This ensures the optimum return on investment
on all energy saving projects.
A feature unique to Coral Leisure; each centre has a dedicated Energy Champion who is
responsible for taking accurate energy readings on a weekly basis and tracking them, as well
as monitoring all equipment so that scheduled maintenance can be carried out on an ongoing
basis to maintain the effectiveness of all machinery from an energy saving perspective.
Many thanks to Brian Miskella of the Ballynoe Inn for sponsoring our
Frank Kelleher to become Cobh Ramblers Academy Manager
Cobh Ramblers Football Club are delighted to announce that Frank Kelleher has taken up the
position of Academy Manager.
Frank will oversee our academy setup and work with senior team manager Stephen Henderson
and the club’s underage managers and coaches to continue to help strengthen our academy.
Kelleher guided Cork City to women’s FAI Cup success in the Aviva Stadium in November, and
has an excellent record in youth football in Cork, helping to establish the Cork Youths League
Academy in 2012.
Speaking this morning, Kelleher said : “I’m delighted to be appointed as the Cobh Ramblers
Academy Manager. I spoke to Stephen Henderson and we had a discussion about it, and I’m
delighted to be on board.
“I’ll be managing the academy at under 19, 17, and 15 level, and obviously the under 13s
coming in next season.
“I’ll be supporting the managers, and the staff involved with the teams, very much working
with player development throughout the entire academy.
“Cobh Ramblers have a philosophy of giving young players the chance to play in the League
of Ireland. And that’s what my job will be - to develop players who are good enough to play in
the first team.
“It’s very exciting, and I’m looking forward to it”.
Senior team manager Stephen Henderson said “to have someone of Frank’s talent and ability
come in is a huge coup for Cobh Ramblers Football Club. I have no doubt our underage structure
will go from strength to strength under his watch, and I’m very much looking forward to
working with him”.
Merck Give GAA a go 2018
Cobh GAA club ran a combined boys and girls football street league for the month of
May 2018.
This consisted of boys U9 & U10. Girls U10, U11 and U12. This is a unique format and was
open to any boy or girl born between 2006 and 2009. The numbers exceeded our expectations
as we initially expected 10 aside but had 13/14 aside after week 1.
After the first set of matches we could clearly see an issue with the girls/boys rules differences.
The small variation in rules made a big difference in play so the coaches got together to
figure it out. I guess this was also initially the case for the ‘International rules football’ when
Australia play an Irish hybrid football team. So to make a long story short we figured out a
great compromise and since then all matches have been close. Week after week we saw new
kids coming along with their friends to try Gaelic football for the first time. Our fantastic young
referees like Cian Tobin, recognized these new players and was slow to penalize, giving them
a chance to play. A combination of great weather, great kids with a great attitude saw a really
successfully and fun street league. T
he finals took place on the 24th May and we could clearly see an improvement in football skills.
We had our medal and cup presentations and the cups were presented by our sponsor Mark
Dunphy from Merck. We wrapped up the event with a massive water gun battle and everyone
was smiling and having a fantastic time. A special thank you to our sponsor ‘Merck’ for supporting
a great league.
