The Ballymore Cobh Athletic Club Report
It was a hectic weekend for Ballymore Cobh A.C., as we had club members scurrying hither
and thither to train, race and support others.
Sat 11th of March was D-Day for a group of our newest members, as their 7 week Fit4Life programme,
designed to introduce beginners to running (or, indeed, reintroduce lapsed practitioners
to the joys of worship at the alter of athleticism), took place in Whitepoint with a 5k run,
followed up with coffee, chat and giant scones at the Commodore Hotel.
Simultaneously, on the far side of Cork Harbour, 7 headbangers ran a 20 mile training run in
testing conditions along the former Passage West railway line in preparation for April’s Rotterdam
Marathon.
Karen Geasley, Leilia Pender, Lynne Doherty, Deirdre Meyler, Stephen Ryan, Brendan Ryan &
Shane Meyler - the doctor will see you now!
Flung far and wide across the province on Sun 12th of March, 4 of our athletes took on the
Crosshaven 5k; Corrina O’Mahony, Ann Cooke (club debut), Oliver Baumann (club debut) and
Jennifer Goggin-Walsh, who topped the bill with a magnificent 1st place finish!
Opting for the Crosshaven 10k were Carol Leahy, Leilia Pender, Natasha Durity, Angela McCall
and John O’Brien, who capped off an excellent showing with 3rd place O/45.
Across Munster in the scenic west Waterford town of Dungarvan, the Déise College 10k was
where young Kate Kennedy made her debut for the club in fine style indeed.
Even further afield, Trevor Cummins landed himself in the Iberian peninsula, got himself kitted
out took part among many thousands of others in the Lisbon Half Marathon. An impressive
1:25 time was the result of his efforts even though he had to contend with serious swathes of
wind and rain over the 13.1 miles.
And for good measure: the famous Ballycotton 10 is no more, but that didn’t preclude our own
Ber Navin from running it anyway on it’s regular race date. She fell in with a gang from Ballintotis
Fit4Life who ran the full course. Sure, why wouldn’t ya?
Clothes don’t grow but kids do. Do your clothes shopping the eco-friendly way at our Kids’
Clothes Swap in Cobh Community Centre on Monday 26th March.
Here’s how it works;
You bring the clothes that your kids have grown out of that are still in good condition (sizes
between 0-5years & 20 items max per person) and hand them over to us to sort into boxes.
You then take from the selection other parents have brought. Whatever is left will go to local
families in need.
If you are expecting a baby or have a very young baby who hasn’t grown out of anything yet,
please come along and take what you need without swapping this time - they’ll grow out of
them in time for our next swap!
