Jessie Senese, the owner of Shop Sweet Lulu (www. shopsweetlulu.com), first came into contact with PADS as a member of the Suburban Service League (SSL), a local volunteer organization of which she’s a member. The SSPADS Emergency Shelter Program provides hospitality, food and overnight emergency shelter to the homeless. Once a month during the winter, rotating members of SSL volunteer to provide and serve meals to an SSPADS site in Flossmoor. It was during a recent visit to the site that Senese noticed the stacks of Styrofoam plates and cups being using to serve the meals. At the same time, she was trying to figure out how deal with an “overstock situation” of products in her party supply warehouse. “And then it just clicked,” Jessie said of the decision to reach out to SSPADS to offer her overstock as a donation. “I needed to create some space in my warehouse, and they could hopefully free up some funds by using my stock instead of purchasing paper plates and cups. It was an easy decision.” Less than a week after she contacted the organization, volunteers from SSPADS showed up in force to unpack the pallets of products and load them onto a 14-passenger bus they typically use for transporting residents of their permanent housing facility. Troy Colbert, the SSPADS Emergency Shelter Network Manager showed up to lend a hand, stating, “We’re so grateful for this generous donation. It will all be put to good use.” While the emergency shelter season ends late April, there is year-round need for supportive housing and services for the homeless. The style of dance dates back to the 1800s, she added. "It became a social thing to do," she said. "People did it in their houses. It was against the law, so they would dance, but if somebody looked in the windows of their house, it would look like they were just walking across the floor." Mayer said she hopes Emma "goes up there and dances the best she can do," adding the competition to Emma Broderick (center) participates in an Irish dancing competition.
