Rogers, with the help of MLB.com’s Bill Chastain, recently released “Try Not to Suck: The Exceptional, Extraordinary Baseball Life of Joe Maddon,” a book chronicling Maddon’s life in baseball. “It’s a biographical look at the career of Joe Maddon and how he came to who he is as a manger,” Rogers said. “The things he’s learned along the way, the things that make him unique the things that have made him a manager that’s on the track to the hall of fame. It’s a look at what makes Maddon tick.” And to find out just what exactly does make Maddon tick, Rogers devoted countless hours of preparation, work and research during the Cubs’ 2017 spring training season. THE LAKE FOREST LEADER National Walkout Day sparks support from Safe Haven students #RisetoSaveLives Students from Safe Haven School in Lake Bluff did just that in conjunction with the country-wide National School Walkout Day. The above hashtag represented the students right to peacefully join the National School Walkout movement. Just one month after a school shooting in Parkland, Fla., at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School took the lives of 17 teenagers, schools and teenagers around the country walked out at 10 a.m. to advocate for stricter gun laws. All but nine students from Safe Haven School participated in the walkout March 14. Safe Haven School, located at 906 Muir Ave., is a therapeutic day school home to students in grades fifth through twelfth that face emotional disturbances, learning disabilities, autism and other health impairments, according to Safe Haven’s website. A group of roughly 35 students, teachers, parents and school officials walked from the school to the corner of Waukegan Road and Route 176th in Lake Bluff and back, ending with two speeches about the importance of the event. With signs depicting important messages like, “It’s time. Demand a plan to end gun violence,” and “Protect kids, not guns,” the group heard honks during their walk from passing drivers in support of their stance and the National School Walkout movement. “It’s a gun issue, not a mental health issue,” said Sheila Deal, director of education services at the school. After the shooting in Florida, the students at Safe Haven reacted by forming an advocate group and having an open conversation on stricter gun laws and how they could support an agenda that resulted in students feeling safer at school. Full story at LakeForestLeader. com. <strong>HP</strong> Strings announces season closing concert Staff Report The Highland Park strings will close its 39th season with a 3 p.m. show May 20, according to a press release. The theme of “All in the Family” will feature a mother-daughter soloist duo. Lyudmila and Masha Lakisova are the featured pianist and violinist in an afternoon filled with the music of Mendelssohn and Tchaikovsky. The concert takes place at Highland Park High School, according to the press release. The concert is free and open to the public. Maestro Robert Hasty serves as principal conductor. Hasty also serves as conductor and associate director of orchestras at Northwestern University, and as the music director of the Kenosha Symphony Orchestra. Hasty has appeared as conductor with the All-American College Orchestra, Beijing Youth Orchestra, Elmhurst, Grant Park and Skokie Valley Symphonies. In her second appearance with the Strings, accomplished teenage violinist Masha Lakisova will perform “Summer” from Vivaldi’s Four Seasons.
