In Chicago, things reached a feverish pitch with the 1968 riots following the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King. Prior to that, two high school basketball teams faced off in a series of games still being talked about to this day. One team, New Trier, was filled with a roster of white players. The other, Marshall, featured black players. The Trevians, or Indians as they were known at the time, were champions of the Central Suburban League. The Commandos were the perennial winners of the Chicago Public League. With a trip downstate on the line, the stage was set for two memorable games. Wilmette filmmaker Joe Dondanville captures all the essence of what made these games so special with his new documentary, “GameChangers.” In development for two years, the project includes the contributions of executive producers Tom Anderson, John Coyne and Larry Rosenzweig, all New Trier graduates, Ken Fishbein, of Northbrook, and the late Paul Gallagher, of Wilmette. Contributing producers are Richard Bradshaw and Nate Byrd, both 1966 graduates of Marshall. “There have been bigger basketball games. There have been state championship games. There have been bigger stars, but all of these people came together,” Dondanville said. “To me, it’s a story about people and the time. The basketball is why we started filming, but it’s about so much more.” Dondanville’s company, MYDFILMS, is an independent video production company. Using existing 8 mm film footage from the games throughout, it tells how Marshall won the 1965 contest to head downstate for the finals. New Trier would win the rematch in 1966 to advance downstate for the first time. Both games were contested at Northwestern University’s Mc- Gaw Memorial Hall. Filming the movie, Dondanville brought back players from the two teams 50 years later to watch and react to the game footage. Among the most dramatic points was when a brawl between spectators spilled onto the court in the final moments of the second game. “It was an unbelievable game. It was tied at the quarter. It was a threepoint difference at halftime,” Dondanville said. “New Trier went on a 15-0 run to pull away at the end and there was tension in the stands.” Dondanville said that the players had to be shuttled back to the locker rooms when the fight started because it was too dangerous for them to be courtside. “They didn’t get a chance to shake hands after the game, which made New Trier and Marshall squared off in two classic Illinois high school boys basketball games in 1965 and 1966. Those games are the subject of a new documentary, “GameChangers” from Wilmette filmmaker Joe Dondanville. Photo submitted this reunion that much more special,” Dondanville said. The filmmakers held a soft premiere of “GameChangers” March 5 at The Wilmette Theatre. Proceeds from the Wilmette screening went toward the GameChangers ’65-’66 Foundation. This foundation was recently established by members of these very same Marshall and New Trier teams, and will use basketball to break down barriers and build relationships between different high-school communities. A second showing of the film was held this past Monday, March 19, at the Breakthrough FamlyPlex in Chicago. The latter was a free, private screening for select Chicago Public School teams and some suburban/Catholic league counterparts, including New Trier, Highland Park and Lake Forest. Other future screenings include Friday, March 30, at the Peoria Riverfront Museum in Peoria. The film also premiered on local Chicago television at 9 p.m. Sunday, March 18, on The U Too. Dondanville said plans are in the works for a special summer basketball tournament to support the GameChangers ‘65-’66 Foundation. He said he already has commitments from suburban teams, New Trier and Lake Forest, along with Chicago city teams, Orr and Marshall.
