GREEN TRAILS HERB GARDEN
The herb committee is being reorganized so as to
not overburden any one person with all the duties
of that task. The garden takes a considerable
amount of tending to keep the herbs healthy
and to keep the public informed as to when and
how to select desired herbs. A February meeting
was held at George Yard’s home of committee
members who have expressed a desire to
shoulder some of those duties. Hopefully a
reasonable distribution was found and herbs will
be planted in the early spring.
Several projects will be carried out during the
2018 years. One of those projects is to do a serious
pruning of the natural area along Kingsland
from Crescent Green to Greenhouse. Another
project will be the continuing upgrading of the
sprinkler systems in our jurisdiction. We will
be combining a sensory garden with the herb
garden at Park Cypress Park. A major deep root
fertilizing will continue along Greenhouse and
any other distressed area between Greenhouse
and Baker Rd and from I-10 to Kingsland. Plans
will be reviewed and implemented to add to the
natural areas along Greenhouse from I-10 and
Wisdom Wood Way.
Everyone on the committees is to be commended
for their hard work over the years and as Chair,
I am proud to work alongside you. We are all
looking forward to the end of this really cold
weather and anxious to get busy making the
green things in our community beautiful.
HOW TO REPLACE OR RENEW YOUR POOL TAG
The days are stretching sunlit hours beyond
dinnertime and school will be out for summer in
just a few days. The last couple of weeks have
brought temperatures and humidity to their
highest levels this year. Already, the thoughts of
fun in sun circle back to relief of our area’s long,
hot days with a refreshing day spent cooling off
in the community swimming pool.
Many of our communities host an opening
“Splash Day” that includes family friendly
activities as well as an opportunity to replace
or renew lost pool tags. Check with your
community’s website and news spaces for
information regarding such an event in your
neighborhood. Many, though not all, take
place over this coming Memorial Day weekend.
Alternatively, if such an event is not hosted
or you are unable to attend, the Pool Tag
Department at Crest Management is staffed and
stands ready to help you.
As you know, residents access their community’s
pool with a pool tag or “key” that is specific
to that community and/or resident. Most
communities allow for online pool tag request
processing. Some communities charge a fee for
processing a replacement pool tag. All pool tags
processed for pick up at the Crest Management
offices incur a $20 fee. If online processing is not
available to your community, you will receive
a message after your address look-up during
the online process and you should proceed
with a phone call to our office for assistance.
The link for online processing is: www.crestmanagement.com/Pages/accessDevices.aspx.
A few of the communities we manage that do
not utilize online processing may have mailed
out an application with the 2018 pool schedule.
This mailing will include specific instructions for
the return and processing of those applications.
In either case, any residents needing assistance
can call Crest Management and speak to the
Pool Tag Department for help in renewing
or replacing a pool tag. We will collect the
necessary information and complete the online
or manual form on their behalf. Once processed,
the pool tags are mailed or may be picked up at
the Crest office. Again, there is a $20 fee for pool
tags picked up at the Crest Management offices.
Here’s a recap of how to replace your pool tag
and enjoy your community pool all summer long:
For online pool tag processing click this
link: www.crest-management.com/Pages/
accessDevices.aspx
For help completing the pool tag application,
contact pooltags@crest-management.com or call
281-579-0761 and ask for Pool Tag Department.
HAVE A DESIRE TO BE PART
OF SOMETHING BIG?
The Green Trails HOA has an amazing
opportunity for volunteers to be part of the
newly developing I-10 and Fry Rd. beautification
project. Come be a part of this great adventure to
help keep our community a thriving, beautiful,
top place to live in the Katy area. This volunteer
team will help an already chosen landscape
architect develop and maintain the landscaping
framework for the I-10 and Fry Rd intersection
and turn this area into a beautiful entry point
into the surrounding community that leads into
the Green Trails subdivision. The landscape
architect has completed the plans and work will
begin this fall. Future projects are expected at
the intersections of I-10 and Green House as well
as I-10 and Barker Cypress; future dates are TBD
based on the success of the first intersection.
If you are interested, please contact Heather
Esteban at Crest management, 281-579-0761
or heather.esteban@crest-management.com,
to apply for this position. You will be contacted
by the responsible Green Trails Board member
in charge of this project for a briefing of the first
scheduled meeting for this committee.
DON’T MISS THIS HUGE COMMUNITY UPLIFTING!
REMOVE VALUABLES, LOCK CARS
Thanks to a resident’s timely call, the constables
made an arrest in connection to car burglaries.
However we need to continue common
sense security practices. Note that 90% of
the car burglaries in the neighborhood were
of unlocked cars. Lock your cars and remove
valuables. Report any burglaries, even if only
items of minimal value were taken.
MOSQUITO CONTROL
Green Trails II has a mosquito control contract
with Excalibur Mosquito Control, but you can
help, too. The best mosquito control program
includes removal of breeding sites. Check your
yards and correct these problem areas:
1. Bowl planters, pots, water dishes and
birdbaths which can hold dampness or water
2. Stopped up gutters or standing water in
gutters
3. Remove moisture holding pine needles from
roof valleys and piles around house.
4. Don’t over water your yard. If water stands for
more than 20 minutes after watering, you are
over watering.
5. Monitor standing water under decks and around
pools or spas. Spray under deck with garden-variety
insecticide regularly or install a drain. Plastic under
decks holds water, so try to eliminate it.
SHORT TERM RENTALS NOT ALLOWED
Please be aware that short-term rentals of
rooms or entire properties are a violation of
deed restrictions.
DOGGIE DON’TS
Most of our dog owners are responsible, using a
leash and picking up after your pets. We thank you!
HOWEVER - We have received reports of dog
owners allowing their dogs to defecate and
urinate in yards. This is especially a problem in
high-traffic areas near park entrances. Be aware
that it is not just your dog. Once a yard has been
“used,” other dogs want to do so as well. A resident
should not have to pick up after even one dog,
much less ten. In addition, runners and walkers in
our parks don’t enjoy dodging excrement. Please
carry a bag and pick up after your pet.
Remember also, that even the sweetest dog
may seem intimidating to some people. Respect
their rights and comply with leash laws.
TRASH PICKUP REMINDER
This is a reminder that Green Trails offers back
door trash pickup. Please put your household
garbage in front of your garage door for pickup
outside of the breezeway fence. Heavy trash and
recyclables must be taken to the curb for pickup.
Do Not Put Trash Out the Night Before Pickup
Please put your trash out the morning of trash
pickup. If you put your trash out the night before
trash pickup this allows cats and other animals
to be able to get into your trash causing a mess
on the street for the trash collection workers or
yourself to deal with.
HOME IMPROVEMENT REMINDER
Remember, ALL exterior changes made to your
home or yard [including your fence] require
Architectural Review Committee approval first.
In need of an Exterior Modification Request
form? Go to www.greentrailstwo.com our
neighborhood website.
NO CALL IS TOO SMALL
Call the Constable to report any suspicious
activity. The fastest dispatch for Green Trails is
via their direct line at 281-463-6666. If something
“doesn’t seem right,” don’t wait to be sure. Trust
your intuition, call it in and let them decide. You
are our best defense. Hats off to the lifeguard
staff at Park Cypress Pool who received honors
during A Beautiful Pools emergency testing
week. Lifeguards were surprised with a real life
scenario with real people being “victims.” While
all teams did well and were “rescue ready,” the
Park Cypress team was cited as a top performer.
PAINTED CONCRETE
No concrete that is visible from any street,
whether a driveway, sidewalk, patio or other
improvement, shall be painted or stained any
color. Concrete that is not visible from any
street may be painted or stained only with ARC
approval.
PAVILION RELEASE FORM
To reserve a park pavilion, please contact Crest
Management at 281-579-7061.
use of residents ONLY. Please ask guests and / or
contractors to utilize the gate directory to obtain
access. If contact information in the directory
needs to be updated, please contact Crest
Directors intends to start utilizing this function
If you have not registered and would like to
do so, please go to the “Join Our Mailing List”
NEW LIGHTS
We have installed a new timer switch on the Crescent Green
courts on the south side of court 1. The timer has a button,
which cycles through 15, 30, 45, 60 & 120 minutes and OFF. The
lights on the pole on the south side between courts 1 and 2 will
act as a safety light. There is a timer switch on the light pole as
you enter the court on Park Cypress.
The lights will remain off until you activate these switches. The
lights will come on instantly.
COURT RESERVATIONS
Court Reservation signup sheets are posted on the bulletin
boards at both the Crescent Green and Park Cypress courts.
Residents must use last names only. Residents may reserve a
court no sooner than 48 hours in advance for a 1 1/2 hour time
period only by writing their last name on 3 blocks of the signup
sheet. (Each block represents 30 minutes). If your match
extends beyond your reserved time period and no one else
is waiting to use the court, you are free to continue playing.
These rules are posted on the bulletin boards and are designed
to allow maximum court usage for all residents.
For safety reasons, tennis activities using a basket of balls
are not permitted during prime time on the Crescent Green
courts. Multiple balls lying on the courts is a safety hazard
for others using the courts. Prime hours are every day,
8-10:30 AM and 6-9 PM. The court on Park Cypress is a single
court on which multiple balls lying on the ground is not a
hazard to others. If you want to use a basket of balls, reserve
the court on Park Cypress.
Anyone, including tennis pros, wanting to reserve REGULAR
court time or to reserve the courts for a SPECIAL event in
advance, must contact the tennis committee for approval
through Greg Kubala, 281-507-6343 or Jim Haylett, 281-
795-3552.
These policies are in place to ensure safe, fair and equal access for all residents
desiring to use of our courts. Individuals not adhering to this signup policy can have
their names removed from the signup sheet by members of the tennis committee.
In addition, FAILURE TO COMPLY WITH AND ADHERE TO THE POSTED GREEN TRAILS
TENNIS COURT POLICIES CAN RESULT IN DEACTIVATION OF YOUR CARD KEY FOR ONE
MONTH. If a committee member speaks to you about a violation and you still do not
comply with these guidelines, your access card could be deactivated for one month.
LEAGUE TENNIS:
Ladies HLTA and WHLTA tennis leagues are approved to play on Mondays and
Wednesdays in the Fall and Spring from 9 AM-12 PM. Currently there is a A-2 team
playing on Monday and Championship and a A-3 teams playing on Wednesday. Our
league rosters are currently full but if you are interested in playing ladies league tennis
contact Elaine Kearney to get on a wait list for the following season, 281-492-6848.
MISCELLANOUS
ACCESS CARDS: New residents needing tennis/pool access cards can contact Crest
Management at 281-579-0761. Access cards are for residents only. Card access is the
only way to insure our courts are only being used and cared for by our residents and
their guests, please do not open the gates for anyone not having a card. Do not loan
out your card.
MAGNETIC GATE: Please do not keep the gate open by hindering its closure with an
item. This causes the automatic lock to malfunction.
VANDALISM: Your yearly maintenance fees directly pay for vandalism on the courts.
Our goal is to keep these costs down while maintaining the nice amenities in our
neighborhood for all residents. Please let your children know if they are observed
abusing our courts and/or their equipment, the Constable will be called to escort
them home. Anyone can report vandalism directly to the Constable at 281-463-6666,
in the effort to keep our neighborhood’s common areas in good condition.
People have until Tuesday, April 17, 2018, to file their 2017 returns and
pay any taxes due. The filing tax deadline is later this year due to several
factors. The usual April 15 th deadline falls on Sunday this year, which
would normally give taxpayers until at least the following Monday.
However, Emancipation Day, a Washington, D.C., holiday, is observed
on Monday, April 16 th , giving taxpayers nationwide an additional day
to file. By law, Washington holidays impact tax deadlines for everyone in
the same way federal holidays do. Taxpayers requesting an extension will
have until Monday, Oct. 15, 2018, to file.
The IRS expects more than 70 percent of taxpayers to get tax refunds this
year. Last year, nearly 112 million refunds were issued, with an average
refund of $2,895.
KATY ISD HOSTS 33 RD ANNUAL KATY FOLK LIFE FESTIVAL
Ever wondered what life was like in Texas during the late 1800’s? At the upcoming
33 rd Annual Katy Folk Life Festival, visitors will get a chance to experience pioneer
life by seeing how they dressed, how they survived, the types of foods they prepared
and even where their children went to school. Other activities include: blacksmith
demonstrations, hand quilting, woodworking and roping skills presentations.
Admission is only $1. The festival will be held at the Kenneth D. Welch Outdoor Learning
Center, 6301 S. Stadium Lane, Katy, TX 77494 on Saturday, April 7 th from 9 AM-4 PM.
KATY ISD APPROVES
INSTRUCTIONAL CALENDARS FOR NEXT TWO YEARS
As part of the Katy Independent School District, “Your District, Your Voice” initiative,
the community has provided its input for the upcoming yearly instructional calendar.
The Katy ISD Board of Trustees has approved the following option for the 2018-2019
academic year:
Option #1
School Begins: Wednesday, August 15 th
School Ends: Thursday, May 23 rd
Instructional Calendar Days: 177
Full week off for Thanksgiving
“The District is required to have a minimum of 75,600 minutes of instruction per school
year,” says Bonnie Holland, associate superintendent for administration, governance
and legal affairs. “With the options approved, Katy ISD has enough calendar minutes
to cover two bad weather days,” added Holland.
April 2018 | Green Trails Section II

K-12 Insight, the external research firm conducting the survey, found
that, out of the 22,169 participants, 65% favored option #1. The Board
also approved an instructional calendar for 2019-2020 school year. This
calendar mirrors the preferred components of the 2018-19 calendar.
NCE INVITES KATY TO ITS “A KNIGHT AT THE
CARNIVAL,” FRIDAY APRIL 6 TH
MECHANICAL BULL RIDE, BUNGEE RIDE, INFLATABLES, GAMES,
ENTERTAINMENT, FOOD AND SILENT AUCTION
The 2018 Nottingham Country Elementary (NCE) Carnival is coming
on April 6 th , from 5-8:30 PM. Everyone is invited, free of charge, to “Get
Medieval!” The event will transport families to a medieval world of rides,
games, food and entertainment.
Carnival is one of two annual fundraisers for NCE and typically attracts
hundreds of Katy residents and their families. It will take place at the NCE
campus, 20500 Kingsland Blvd. Katy, Texas.
Activities will include many games and rides, including the return of the
Mechanical Bull (a popular medieval pastime) and the Quad Monkey
Bungee Ride, which will send our young royalty soaring high into the
dragon sphere. You can also climb the castle tower (a towering rockclimbing
wall) in a feat of awesome bravery or challenge your fellow lords
and ladies in a race through the kingdom (giant, inflatable, dual-lane
obstacle course) or simply enjoy a leisurely ride through the kingdom on
the king’s trackless train. All guests are invited to win the queen’s favor by
dunking kingdom invaders in the royal Dunking Booth.
Young attendees will enjoy the royal Petting Zoo and every guest can
replenish their supplies of knightly gear at the Carnival General Store.
Kids of all ages will delight in capturing photos with their friends in the
Medieval-themed Photo Booth.
Guests can look forward to the finest of entertainment, including a
performance by the Taylor High School Drumline.
In the food and beverage department, the Carnival will offer a sampling
of culinary delights fit for a king! Chick-Fil-A returns this year, along with
the Chick-Fil-A cow. Pizza and Tutti Frutti for dessert also will be available.
And don’t forget the royal Silent Auction, bound to tantalize with themed
baskets from each NCE class, as well as parties and the ever-popular 5 th
grade basketball game. Previous auctions have included a weekend
getaway in a Galveston condo! Stay tuned to NCE’s Facebook page for
details on this year’s auction items!
Kids are invited to wear Medieval costumes - from knightly armor to
royal robes - to the Carnival, as a reminder to everyone that we are on a
quest to be the best (that’s the NCE Knights’ motto, after all!) Stop by the
Knighting Booth to be knighted and receive your official knight’s name.
And everyone is encouraged to wear their dancing shoes and participate
in the Carnival Dance Contest. Prizes for 1 st and 2 nd place will be awarded!
Volunteers from Taylor High School will be lending a helping hand to this
year’s event and many local businesses have shown their support of NCE
by sponsoring this year’s Carnival. All sponsorship dollars are applied
toward purchases to improve the school. So, mark your calendars and
Let’s Get Medieval at the NCE “Knight at the Carnival” extravaganza on
Friday, April 6 th . We’ll see you at the Nottingham Castle!
Nearly all children with 5p-Syndrome have poor muscle tone when they are young. Other
characteristics may include feeding difficulties, delays in walking, hyperactivity, scoliosis and
significant developmental delays. A small number of children are born with serious organ
defects and other life threatening medical conditions, although most individuals with 5p- can
anticipate a normal life expectancy. With early and consistent educational intervention, as
well as physical and language therapy, children with 5p-Syndrome are capable of reaching
their fullest potential and can lead full and meaningful lives. Children born with this very
rare genetic defect will most likely require ongoing support for life, from a team of parents,
therapists, medical and educational professionals to help the child achieve his or her
maximum potential.
KATY COMMUNITY ‘CHIP CLINIC’
May 5, 2018, 11 AM-2 PM
KCCC at Woof Gang Bakery & Grooming - Richmond
9711 S. Mason Rd, Richmond, Texas
Katy Community ‘Chip Clinic, a local non-profit, volunteer-run organization is pleased to
announce its spring schedule of upcoming events to serve the needs of Katy-area residents.
The organization offers $10 microchipping for pets with FREE lifetime registration! What is a
microchip? A microchip is a rice-sized transponder that is injected between a pet’s shoulder
blades with a needle. When getting ‘chipped, most animals don’t notice any difference from
when receiving yearly vaccinations. A microchip does NOT have a GPS locator on it, but as
long as the account is kept up-to-date, its number will be linked to the pet owner’s contact
information. The microchip account is easily accessible online and pet owners can update as
needed and even add pet’s photo and veterinarian info.
Pet owners do not need to live in the same town as these upcoming events to take advantage
of this service, but PLEASE NOTE: cash only and MUST bring rabies certification paperwork (not
just the collar tag) - for volunteer and attendee safety. There is a limit of two pets per family,
unless pre-approved. Cats should be in a secure carrier and dogs should be on a no-slip leash
(please no retractable leashes).
For more information on these events or to see the upcoming calendar, please follow the group
die on the streets from abuse, disease and suicide. According to recent
statistics Houston has up to 2,500 kids living on the streets at any given
time. Texas has the highest rate of homeless youth in the U.S.
StandUp For Kids needs supplies for our Houston program, which provides
food, clothing, counseling and a safe environment for the homeless
youth of Houston. If you or your organization would like to hold a food
Calling on all the quilters in the area to help make pillowcases
and small blankets. This last year we donated over 200
pillowcases and small blankets to various charities. The demand
is even higher with all of the families that have lost their homes
because of the fires in and around our area. We need you and we
have fabric that has been donated but we need your hands and
time to make someone smile. If you would like to help, call the
Katy Quilters, Shari Medford at 281-635-3000.
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES:
VANTAGE HOSPICE
Vantage Volunteers Needed! Looking to volunteer in a way that
makes a difference in people’s lives? This is it! Our compassionate
volunteer team takes an individualized approach to care. We
help provide the best quality of life, for the end of life. This
is accomplished through social interaction, companionship,
active listening and activities. In addition, sometimes we aide
and support the family by relieving the caregiver. If interested,
contact Tracy Roth at troth@vantagehospice.com.
FOSTER CHILDREN:
PREPARATION FOR ADULT LIVING (PAL)
When foster children reach age 18, they are considered
independent. That’s difficult for kids who have been wards of
the state, with necessities arranged by caseworkers with state
funds. Now they’ll have to figure out how to organize themselves
and make their money last a whole month. Fortunately, Child
protective Services offers them a program to help prepare for
independence: Preparation for Adult Living (PAL). The year-long
course culminates in an all-day workshop hosted by the National
Council for Jewish Women (NCJW). The course is held at Junior
Achievement’s BizTown, using computer kiosks sponsored by
local businesses. Want to help with PAL or other NCJW programs
that help change lives with hands-on community service?
Mulch - If possible, buy Bagged Mulch. Bagging helps eliminate
a great many pests that die from various causes while in the bag.
When you buy ‘loose’ mulch that is trucked to your home, you
are also buying ants, roaches, termites, etc… Spend a little more
on bagged material and save lots of future pest problems. Keep
your mulch at least 4” - 6” below the top of your homes exposed
foundation edge/side. This will aid in minimizing pests in your
home and allow for quick and accurate termite inspections.
Shrubs, Flowers and groundcovers - Trim all shrubs/plants at
least 12” - 18” back from your home. Do your best to create a plant
free zone that is 18” - 24” wide around your home. The exception
is your lawn - it can grow up next to the slab as long as you keep
it 4” - 6” below the top of the slab. The most conducive to termite
infestation are groundcover plantings, growing high against your
homes exterior or (especially) ivy that grows on your walls.
Trees - Spray your trees at least twice annually. The spring spray
eliminates overwintering pests and fungi while preparing trees to
resist the pest onslaught of summer with residual pesticides. The
fall spray also kills pests from the summer, prevents most fungi
from occurring over the winter and puts your valuable asset off to a
healthy winter’s dormancy.
Lawn - Spring is the perfect time to do a fungicide treatment to stop
brown patch in its tracks along with other fungi. If your lawn is thin
and weak in some areas, here are some important fundamentals: a)
lawn aeration b) fertilization c) weed control.
Most important is proper watering:
• Water once per week (unless you get a 1/2” rain or more - then do
not water.)
• Water heavily (1” - 2”) for total lawn coverage.
• In severe drought, water every 5 th day.
• Water from 5 AM to 7 AM in the morning - NOT AT NIGHT.
• A heavy deep weekly watering makes the turf grow deeper,
stronger and more drought resistant roots.
• Less watering also saves you money!!
