Spring-Cleaning Tips 

If spring is in the air, don’t let a musty house spoil it. Here are 

seven tips for giving the season the welcome it deserves. 

1. The best refrigerator cleaner is a combination of salt and 

soda water. The bubbling action of the soda water combines 

with the abrasive texture of the salt to make a great cleaner. 

2. The best way to get rid of lime buildup around the faucet 

it is to lay paper towels over the fixture, soak it with vinegar 

and let it set for an hour. The deposits will soften and become 

easier to remove. 

3. Clean screens with a scrap of carpeting. It makes a powerful 

brush that removes all the dirt. 

4. Clean windows with a rag and soapy water and then dry 

them with another rag. You can also go to an auto-parts store 

and buy a windshield squeegee, which cleans very well. 

5. If drapes are looking drab, take them out of the window, 

remove the hooks and run them through the air-fluff cycle in 

the dryer along with a wet towel (to draw off the dust) for 15 

minutes. Hang them back in the windows immediately. 

6. Clean the blades of a ceiling fan by covering them with a 

coat of furniture polish. Wipe off the excess and lightly buff. 

7. Sometimes comforters, blankets and pillows don’t need 

to be cleaned, but they do need to be aired out after a long 

winter in your closed-up home. Take them outside and hang 

them on a clothesline for a day.

33rd Annual Katy Folk Life Festival 

Ever wondered what life was like in Texas during the late 1800’s? At the 

upcoming 33 rd Annual Katy Folk Life Festival, visitors will get a chance to 

experience pioneer life by seeing how they dressed, how they survived, 

the types of foods they prepared and even where their children went 

to school. Other activities include: blacksmith demonstrations, hand 

quilting, woodworking and roping skills presentations. Admission is only 

$1. The festival will be held at the Kenneth D. Welch Outdoor Learning 

Center, 6301 S. Stadium Lane, Katy, TX 77494 on Saturday, April 7 th from 

9 AM-4 PM.

Instructional Calendars 

For Next Two Years 

As part of the Katy Independent School District, “Your District, Your Voice” 

initiative, the community has provided its input for the upcoming yearly 

instructional calendar. The Katy ISD Board of Trustees has approved the 

following option for the 2018-2019 academic year:

School Ends: Thursday, May 23 rd

“The District is required to have a minimum of 75,600 minutes 

of instruction per school year,” says Bonnie Holland, associate 

superintendent for administration, governance and legal affairs. “With 

the options approved, Katy ISD has enough calendar minutes to cover 

two bad weather days,” added Holland. 

K-12 Insight, the external research firm conducting the survey, found 

that, out of the 22,169 participants, 65% favored option #1. The Board 

also approved an instructional calendar for 2019-2020 school year. This 

calendar mirrors the preferred components of the 2018-19 calendar.

Team Earns Awards 

After earning 2nd place for the 2017 Robot Design Award at the Katy Qualifier, 

the Computerized Coyotes from Cinco Ranch Junior High advanced to the 

South Texas Region Championship, where the team was thrilled to earn 

the 3rd place trophy for Strategy and Innovation in January 2018. The first 

year rookie team has been led by Alex Dial, a tenth grade Cinco Ranch High 

School student and CRHS Robotics Team 624 CRyptonite member. Alex was 

influential in forming the team, which is part of FIRST (For Inspiration and 

Recognition of Science and Technology) LEGO League (FLL). Team members 

Sam Daigre, Kartik Rai and Derek Elis have been diligently working since 

August, designing and building the team’s LEGO Mindstorm robot and 

brainstorming to solve the FLL Hydrodynamic Challenge, to present to a 

panel of judges. The Computerized Coyotes gained entry to the South Texas 

Regional Championship by qualifying at the Katy event that was hosted by 

Team 624 CRyptonite in December 2017. Team 624 CRyptonite has been a 

great resource for FLL teams by hosting practice events, competitions and 

offering advice for young teams. The Computerized Coyotes are also thankful 

for the generous support they have received from Cinco Ranch Junior High 

principal, Elizabeth Nicklas, as well as Bechtel Corporation. Soon the team 

will begin brainstorming ideas for next season’s FLL Challenge, ‘Into Orbit.’

Katy Area Running Club 

The Katy Area Running Club is a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation which 

exists to serve people living in and around Katy, Texas who have 

an interest in running. We are a community of people of all ages, 

backgrounds, heritages and abilities who share a common interest - 

running! Our focus is on group runs, having fun, socializing and sharing 

our knowledge and experience with our members and the public. We

runs, events and socials. We hold group runs every Saturday morning 

at the Sergeant Hatch Sports Park off the south I-10 feeder road just east 

of Barker Cypress Rd. On Tuesdays (5 AM and 6:30 PM) we meet at the 

Cinco Ranch Junior High Track for speedwork and on Thursday (6:30

Southwest Houston’s own brand new women’s flat track roller derby

their facility that was destroyed during Hurricane Harvey. The Arc works 

to create opportunities for all children and adults with intellectual

participating and respected member of our community. The run will take 

place at Cinco Ranch High School on Saturday, April 21, 2018 from 8 

AM to 11 AM. The event features the throwing and tossing of non-toxic 

colored corn starch in the air in the beginning of the race and throughout

2nd Annual Katy Color Run 

The 2 nd annual Katy Color Run will be held Saturday, April 7 th at Kingsland 

Baptist Church. The color-filled run will consist of a 5K run and a 1K kids’ 

dash. The community event will also feature entertainment, food trucks 

and vendors and a kids’ fun zone. Proceeds from the run will benefit local 

nonprofit organizations: Christ Clinic, Clothed by Faith, Compassion Katy, 

Hope Impacts and Katy Christian Ministries. The Ballard Foundation is the 

title sponsor of the event. The benefiting nonprofits provided thousands 

of people with medical, food, clothing and shelter needs after Hurricane 

Harvey. Christ Clinic offers medical care to uninsured and underinsured 

patients. Clothed by Faith gives gently used clothing to thousands of 

Katy area residents in need. Compassion Katy’s connects churches, 

businesses and nonprofits to provide solutions to meet the needs of 

the community. Hope Impacts imparts hope to homeless and under 

resourced people in the Katy area by connecting them to services and 

resources. Katy Christian Ministries offers food and emergency financial 

assistance to those in need and also offers many other resources to the 

community including a domestic abuse center and a resale store. For

in walking, hyperactivity, scoliosis and significant developmental delays.

organization is pleased to announce its spring schedule of upcoming 

events to serve the needs of Katy-area residents. The organization 

offers $10 microchipping for pets with FREE lifetime registration! What 

is a microchip? A microchip is a rice-sized transponder that is injected 

between a pet’s shoulder blades with a needle. When getting ‘chipped, 

most animals don’t notice any difference from when receiving yearly 

vaccinations. A microchip does NOT have a GPS locator on it, but as long 

as the account is kept up-to-date, its number will be linked to the pet 

owner’s contact information. The microchip account is easily accessible 

online and pet owners can update as needed and even add pet’s photo

KARE Scholarships Through Their Annual Chocolate Auction. 

On February 7, 2018, Katy Area Retired 

Educators (KARE) held their monthly 

meeting and raised funds for KARE 

scholarships through their annual Chocolate 

Auction. Guest speaker, Randolph Holford, 

a Professional Auctioneer, shared with 

them his passion for auctioneering and his 

involvement in Youth FFA. KARE meetings 

are once again being held at the Merrell 

Center. Thank you, Midway Barbeque, for 

hosting meetings during the restoration of 

the Merrell Center. KARE’s next meeting will

Katy Resident Raises Money To Help 

Schools, Clubs And Organizations 

For four years, Katy resident Dorothy Sanchez has worked to raise money 

in the hopes of helping local schools, clubs and organizations thrive. This 

year not only marked Sanchez’s fifteenth Scentsy fundraiser but her 

most successful one yet. In December, Sanchez presented Kelsey Peltier 

a check for $2,050.49 to go toward the Theatre Department at Poly Ryon 

Middle School. Peltier, the school’s theatre teacher incorporated the 

Scentsy fundraiser into an assignment for her theatre students who were 

able to raise the money in just two weeks. 

Mrs. Sanchez is a Scentsy Director who believes in one of Scentsy’s 

values, “Give More Than You Take.” She donates part of her commissions 

to build up the community. In her four years of holding fundraisers, she 

has been able to donate more than $50,000.

THE TITMOUSE CLUB 

The Titmouse Club is a nature program for children ages 2 ½ to 5 

sponsored by the Houston Audubon Docent Guild. The program is 

offered every Tuesday and Wednesday morning, 10 to 11 AM, from 

mid-September until mid-May at the Edith L. Moore Nature Sanctuary, 

440 Wilchester Boulevard. Each week features a different nature theme 

and may include nature talks, stories, hands-on activities and walks in

How would you feel if you saved a kid’s life? StandUp For Kids is an 

all volunteer organization dedicated to saving the lives of at-risk and 

homeless kids through volunteer outreach efforts. Our volunteers search 

the streets in order to find, stabilize and otherwise help homeless and 

street kids improve their lives. Every day throughout the US thirteen kids 

die on the streets from abuse, disease and suicide. According to recent 

statistics Houston has up to 2,500 kids living on the streets at any given 

time. Texas has the highest rate of homeless youth in the U.S. StandUp 

For Kids needs supplies for our Houston program, which provides food, 

clothing, counseling and a safe environment for the homeless youth

Katy Quilters Needs 

Help For Charities 

Calling on all the quilters in the area to help make pillowcases and 

small blankets. This last year we donated over 200 pillowcases and 

small blankets to various charities. The demand is even higher with 

all of the families that have lost their homes because of the fires 

in and around our area. We need you and we have fabric that has 

been donated but we need your hands and time to make someone

Foster Children: 

Preparation For Adult Living (Pal) 

When foster children reach age 18, they are considered independent. 

That’s difficult for kids who have been wards of the state, with 

necessities arranged by caseworkers with state funds. Now they’ll 

have to figure out how to organize themselves and make their money 

last a whole month. Fortunately, Child protective Services offers 

them a program to help prepare for independence: Preparation for 

Adult Living (PAL). 

The year-long course culminates in an all-day workshop hosted by 

the National Council for Jewish Women (NCJW). The course is held at 

Junior Achievement’s BizTown, using computer kiosks sponsored by

Tips for April 

Mulch - If possible, buy Bagged Mulch. Bagging helps eliminate 

a great many pests that die from various causes while in the bag. 

When you buy ‘loose’ mulch that is trucked to your home, you 

are also buying ants, roaches, termites, etc… Spend a little more 

on bagged material and save lots of future pest problems. Keep 

your mulch at least 4” - 6” below the top of your homes exposed 

foundation edge/side. This will aid in minimizing pests in your 

home and allow for quick and accurate termite inspections. 

Shrubs, Flowers and groundcovers - Trim all shrubs/plants at 

least 12” - 18” back from your home. Do your best to create a plant 

free zone that is 18” - 24” wide around your home. The exception 

is your lawn - it can grow up next to the slab as long as you keep 

it 4” - 6” below the top of the slab. The most conducive to termite 

infestation are groundcover plantings, growing high against your 

homes exterior or (especially) ivy that grows on your walls. 

Trees - Spray your trees at least twice annually. The spring spray 

eliminates overwintering pests and fungi while preparing trees to 

resist the pest onslaught of summer with residual pesticides. The 

fall spray also kills pests from the summer, prevents most fungi 

from occurring over the winter and puts your valuable asset off to a 

healthy winter’s dormancy. 

Lawn - Spring is the perfect time to do a fungicide treatment to stop 

brown patch in its tracks along with other fungi. If your lawn is thin 

and weak in some areas, here are some important fundamentals: a) 

lawn aeration b) fertilization c) weed control. 

Most important is proper watering: 

• Water once per week (unless you get a 1/2” rain or more - then do 

not water.) 

• Water heavily (1” - 2”) for total lawn coverage. 

• In severe drought, water every 5 th day. 

• Water from 5 AM to 7 AM in the morning - NOT AT NIGHT. 

• A heavy deep weekly watering makes the turf grow deeper, 

stronger and more drought resistant roots. 

• Less watering also saves you money!! 

IRS TAX DEADLINE 

People have until Tuesday, April 17, 2018, to file their 2017 returns and 

pay any taxes due. The filing tax deadline is later this year due to several 

factors. The usual April 15 th deadline falls on Sunday this year, which 

would normally give taxpayers until at least the following Monday. 

However, Emancipation Day, a Washington, D.C., holiday, is observed 

on Monday, April 16 th , giving taxpayers nationwide an additional day 

to file. By law, Washington holidays impact tax deadlines for everyone in 

the same way federal holidays do. Taxpayers requesting an extension will 

have until Monday, Oct. 15, 2018, to file. 

The IRS expects more than 70 percent of taxpayers to get tax refunds this 

year. Last year, nearly 112 million refunds were issued, with an average 

refund of $2,895.

Caramel Pecan Pie 

You could make this on National Caramel Day April 5 th ! 

INGREDIENTS: 

1 (9 inch) unbaked pie crust 

36 individually wrapped caramels, unwrapped 

1/4 cup butter 

1/4 cup milk 

DIRECTIONS: 

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C.) In a saucepan over low heat, combine 

caramels, butter and milk. Cook, stirring frequently, until smooth. Remove from heat and 

set aside. 

In a large bowl, combine sugar, eggs, vanilla and salt. Gradually mix in the melted caramel 

mixture. Stir in pecans. Pour filling into unbaked pie crust. 

Bake in the preheated oven for 45 to 50 minutes or until pastry is golden brown. Allow to 

cool until filling is firm.

Bacon Ranch Cheese Ball 

You could make this on National Cheeseball Day April 17 th ! 

INGREDIENTS: 

6 slices bacon 

2 (8 ounce) packages cream cheese, softened 

1 (1 ounce) package buttermilk Ranch dressing mix 

1/2 cup shredded sharp Cheddar cheese 

4 green onions, chopped 

3 tablespoons chopped black olives 

1 1/2 cups chopped pecans (optional) 

DIRECTIONS: 

Place the bacon in a large, deep skillet and cook over medium-high heat, turning 

occasionally, until evenly browned, about 10 minutes. Drain the bacon slices on a paper 

towel-lined plate. Chop the cooled bacon into small pieces. 

Stir together the cream cheese and ranch dressing mix in a bowl until smooth. Add the 

bacon, cheddar cheese, green onions and olives, stir until well combined. Shape the 

mixture into a ball and roll in the chopped pecans. Refrigerate overnight.
