COMMUNITY EVENTS 

During the 2017 annual meeting as well as several Board meetings, 

you (fellow residents) suggested more community events. In an 

effort to meet this demand, a community cook off has been added 

to our 2018 community event list. 

The purpose of all community events is to provide opportunities 

whereby neighbors can come out get to know each other and have 

fun. Look for email alerts, the HOA website and banners for additional 

information as the scheduled date approaches. To ensure 

each event is successful, volunteers are needed.

COMMON VIOLATIONS OF DEED RESTRICTIONS 

Raintree Village is a deed restricted community aimed at ensuring 

there’s aesthetic uniformity between residential properties and 

that certain other activities are limited. If you intend to do anything 

to the exterior of your home, you must complete an application 

for home improvements and modifications form. This includes 

installing a storage shed in your backyard. 

There’s also an expectation that all residents will maintain their 

yard and general appearance of the home. Common violations 

include overgrown yards, mold on homes, trashcans visible from 

the street and disabled vehicles. Our management company, KPM, 

drives through our community at least once a week assessing 

compliance with the deed restrictions. Any violations are communicated 

in a letter along with a picture of the violation (date & 

time stamped). 

It’s understandable that issuing or receiving such letters can be 

perceived as a nuisance. Yet, it’s necessary so that all of us remain 

on the same page of what constitutes a well-kept community (i.e. 

deed restrictions). In general, the Management Company and HOA 

Board understand residents are busy. Therefore, you are encouraged 

to contact the management company (KPM) when a violation 

cannot be addressed within stated timeframes noted in the letter. 

It cannot be emphasized enough that communication is the key if 

you do not understand a violation. You should also contact KPM 

once the violation has been resolved. Again, contact KPM or attend 

our HOA Board meetings for additional clarification. 

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED 

You are reminded of our standing committees, which need ongoing 

volunteers. The committees are as follows: 

• Pool Committee (organizes Official Pool Opening Party 

& monitors activities during pool season) 

• Newsletter - submit articles 

• Yard of the Month - select section winners 

We also need volunteers for the listed community activities. 

Volunteering is an opportunity to make Raintree Village a better 

community for all the residents. If you’re interested in volunteering 

for any of the noted events or committees, contact Walonda Hollins

DRIVING IN RAINTREE VILLAGE 

Our community has grown significantly over the past year. Moreover, 

our community has numerous homes along our main street, 

Raintree Village. With such growth, it’s important that we’re more

cognizant of our speed while driving through Raintree Village and 

parking on community streets. 

I’m sure everyone has noticed increased congestion along with cars 

parked along various streets within our community. However, it’s 

important that all of us adhere to the speed limit and encourage 

others to do the same. 

The following tips serve as a reminder for driving & parking 

in our community: 

1. Drive the speed limit - 35 miles per hour 

2. Do not block your neighbor’s driveway 

3. Make sure you park in the direction of traffic 

when parking on the street 

4. Make sure you park within 18 inches from the curb 

5. Remain mindful if the street is narrow, street parking 

impose greater limitations for emergency vehicles 

Finally, we must be mindful that emergency vehicles are wider 

than personal vehicles. Some community streets impose greater 

limitations for emergency vehicles when there’s street parking. 

Although residents have the right to park on the street, let’s be 

mindful of the aforementioned tips. 

TIPS TO REDUCE YOUR RISK OF BURGLARY 

It cannot be stated enough of the importance of minimizing our exposure 

to crime. Our contract deputies stated that certain vehicles 

have increased exposure to theft, specifically the tires and rims. 

The vehicles commonly targeted are Ford F150, Dodge Chargers 

and Chevy Tahoes. Although these vehicles have rim locks, another 

safeguard is to park your vehicle in the garage or close to another 

vehicle. Anyway, you can either slow down or cause attention will 

help reduce the risk of theft. 

Be mindful to breakdown bags and boxes of large purchases, if possible 

place in trash bins or bags. Although it’s time consuming and 

burdensome, it doesn’t call attention to such items in your home. 

The list below simply reminds us of other things we should be 

mindful each day. 

1. Take the time to meet and know your neighbors. Let them know if 

you notice anything unusual such as cars or people at their homes. 

2. Make sure to close garage doors when at home & away. 

3. Don’t keep garage door openers in the car, take them in the house 

with you; a garage door opener makes it easier for someone to enter 

your garage or house to remove personal property. 

4. Keep car doors locked and take valuables either in your home 

or ensure the items are not in plain site; remember to take down 

the attachment for your Garmin too, as it alerts individuals that 

something valuable may be in the car. 

5. If possible, keep a car in a driveway as it gives an impression that 

someone is home. 

6. Keep all shrubs and plants at a level low enough that passing by 

officers or other residents can see if someone is lurking in those 

bushes! Shrubs should also be trimmed high enough to show “feet” 

of someone hiding in them. 

7. Have keys in hand before leaving the store, house or office, 

avoiding standing by the car searching for them. 

8. Don’t leave ladders on the side of the house or in the back yard. 

Ladders provide easy access to open second floor windows and no 

one will be able to see.

9. Make sure you close blinds when you are inside at night with the 

lights on, potential burglars can see right inside and know who is 

at home. 

10. Use sensor lights outside the home. It deters criminals by “spot 

lighting” their efforts to enter your home. 

11. Use double key locks: locks that require a key from the outside 

and from the inside. 

12. Repair any broken areas of your fence, reducing the access of 

potential burglars or mischievous kids. 

13. When on vacation, let your neighbor(s) know so they can keep 

an eye out for suspicious activity. You can also inform the Harris 

County Deputy’s Office serving our area. The Storefront Office is 

located 19818 Franz Rd., Katy, TX 77449, 281-647-9371. The storefront 

hours: 9 AM - 5 PM. 

14. When on vacation, keep yards mowed and trimmed, burglars 

spend a lot of time in a neighborhood looking for their next targets. 

Overgrown yards are a sure sign no one’s home. 

BE SURE ADDRESS is CLEAR FROM THE STREET 

County officials want to remind residents of the Ordinance 5.3 requiring 

that addresses or building numbers be legible and visible 

from the street. The section states the numbers must be in Arabic 

numerals at least four inches in height and clearly visible. The 

number should be placed on, above or at the side of the main entrance 

so the number is clearly visible from the public right away. 

Whenever a home entrance is more than 50 feet from a public right 

away, a number should also be placed at the end of a driveway or 

property entrance. 

SATELLITE DISHES 

It’s come to HOA’s attention that the installation of satellite dishes 

on some homes violates the deed restrictions. Satellites are expected 

to be installed out of sight of public view. The Association 

appreciates residents taking the time to ensure compliance.

includes a link to review current crime statistics for our community

As a fellow resident, you’ll have access to critical information regarding 

the HOA budget and annual meeting minutes. 

The aforementioned information can only be accessed by establishing 

a log-on user name and password. A request for an email address 

during the initial signup process will enable residents to receive alerts 

of upcoming events or critical notices. If you have any suggestions,

HARRIS COUNTY LEASH LAW 

Animals that are not properly restrained pose a threat to all our residents. 

While you may know your pet is friendly, an animal running 

at someone who is walking by is very scary for that person. Many 

children are afraid of animals and become frightened, which could 

result in the child getting hurt trying to avoid the animal. 

Harris County Animal Control advises, “All dogs and cats must be 

kept under restraint while in the unincorporated areas of Harris 

County, Texas. The custodian of a dog or cat is not authorized to 

have, harbor or keep any unlicensed dog or cat, nor to allow any 

dog or cat to become a stray.”

Restraint is defined as “the control of a dog or cat under the following 

circumstances: 

1. When it is controlled by a line or leash not more than six (6) feet in 

length, if the line or leash is held by a human being, who is capable 

of controlling or governing the dog or cat in question 

2. When it is within a fully enclosed vehicle 

3. When it is on the premise of the custodian and the animal does 

not have access to sidewalk or street.” 

While it may be nice to have your animal out in the yard while you 

work or play, it is against the law, unless the animal is properly 

restrained. 

Let’s all help keep our community a safe and comfortable place 

for all our residents by being responsible pet owners. This will not 

only protect anyone who may be walking or bicycling in the area, 

but also the pet owner who could be held legally responsible or 

possibly sued for failing to properly restrain their pet. 

3. No Member may speak more than once on the subject and no 

more than two (2) minutes, until all Members who wish to speak 

have done so. 

4. Members of the audience shall not be permitted to interrupt nor 

question any speaker. 

5. After the speaker has finished addressing the Board, the Meeting 

Chairperson will recognize the next Member to speak. 

6. Members in attendance are not permitted to engage in private 

discussions during the open session and must remain quite or leave 

the meeting room. 

7. Violations of these Standing Rules will not be tolerated. Violators 

may be requested to leave the Meeting.

STREETLIGHTS 

We want all of our streetlights to work. A lighted area is a safer 

area. If a streetlight is out in your area, please go to www.centerpointenergy.com 

and report it. Once on the website, click on 

“electricity” then “residential.” On the left side, you should click 

on “report a streetlight outage” to enter the required information. 

Each light pole should have a number on it. When reporting the out 

or malfunctioning light, give them the pole number, closest street 

address, contact information, an email address and the number of 

street lights you would like to report. 

THE STANDING RULES FOR RAINTREE VILLAGE 

HOA BOARD MEETINGS 

The Board of Directors feels it serves you best when the Board meetings 

are conducted in an orderly manner. The HOA Board Meetings 

are held to conduct Association business. Your cooperation in this 

regard is requested. Parliamentary Procedure is followed at this 

Meeting. 

There are two sessions at the HOA Board Meetings, an open session 

when members may be present and an executive session when no 

members are permitted. 

Board Meeting will begin with the open session at 7 PM until 7:15 

PM when that time slot has been filled, members must wait until 

the next month’s meeting to be placed on the agenda. 

RAINTREE TEENAGE JOB SEEKERS LIST 

If you are between 12 and 18 and would like to be added to the teenage 

job seeker’s list, please fill out the form on our website (www. 

krenekprinting.com, click submissions and choose Jobseekers) 

with your name, birthdate (mo. & yr.), phone number, year you will 

graduate and the name of your newsletter/subdivision. Check the 

list of jobs you want on your form. Please make sure your email is 

correct, we send emails in the summer to make sure all the info is 

still good and that you want to stay on the list. If we do not hear 

back from you after 3 tries, we will remove you from the list until

LAWN CARE GUIDE FOR SOUTHERN GRASSES 

INCLUDING ST. AUGUSTINE, BERMUDA AND ZOYSIA

FERTILIZE - Four times a year. Late February-Early March - apply a simple 

15-5-10 for an early green-up. Most companies that make slow-release 

fertilizers also make a non-slow-release 15-5-10 that provides for a quick 

two-week green up before we get to the heart of the fertilizer schedule. 

WARNING - Some people will be tempted to use a weed-and-feed at this 

time, but there should never be a need. However, spot weed-and-feed 

treatments are recommended for those with turf-only landscapes or 

landscapes that have been established for many years. Most weed-andfeeds 

contain Atrazine, which burns roots of young trees and shrubs. 

Late March-Early April - apply slow-release 3-1-2 ratio fertilizers. 

Recommended formulations: 

19-4-10 Nitro Phos Super Turf 

18-4-6 Fertilome Southwest Greenmaker 

18-0-6 Fertilome’s Zero Phosphate Formula 

15-5-10 Southwest Fertilizer Premium Gold 

20-0-10 Bonide Premium Lawn Food 

Late June-Early July - apply slow-release 3-1-2 ratio fertilizers. Recommended 

formulations 19-5-9, 19-4-10, 18-4-6, 15-5-10. 

October-November - apply winterizer formulas for winter hardiness. 

Ratios vary but make sure they are “winter” or “fall” formulas designed 

for southern grasses. (examples: 18-6-12, 8-12-16, 10-5-14) Will make 

lawns winter-hardy. 

June-September - if turfgrass looks yellow (chlorosis) or necrotic, use 

an application of either granular or liquid iron. Once a year should be 

enough. 

FUNGICIDE - two times a year July-September - Gray Leaf Spot is a 

blotchy spot on the grass blade leaves (mostly on St. Augustine lawns). 

Use fungicides with active ingredients like Daconil, Consan or Banner. 

September-October - To control the dreaded Brown patch fungal disease 

(symmetrical brown circles in the grass) you must prevent it from 

coming up with a systemic lawn fungicide with Bayleton, Terrachlor, 

Banner or Benomyl. 

HERBICIDE - three times a year. Pre-Emergent controls to prevent weeds. 

Late October-Early November - Use two (2) different pre-emergent 

herbicides, to prevent the weeds that we experience in February and 

March. First is a pre-emergent with Portrait or Gallery for broadleaf weeds 

like clover. Second, use a pre-emergent with Amaze, Betasan, Balan or 

Treflan for grassy weeds like poa anna or annual bluegrass. There is also 

Barricade, Dimension or Pendimethlin as a 2-in-1 control. 

February-March - Use the pre-emergent controls for grassy weeds 

again, to prevent such weeds as Crabgrass, Goosegrass and Dallisgrass 

from popping up late in the spring and summer. Again, use the grassy 

pre-emergent like Amaze, Betasan, Balan or Treflan. There is also Barricade, 

Dimension or Pendimethlin as a 2-in-1 control. 

May-Early June - One more application of a grassy pre-emergent like Amaze, 

Betasan, Balan or Treflan will keep fall weeds from invading from August on. 

There is also Barricade, Dimension-based or Pendimethlin as a 2-in-1 control. 

INSECTICIDES - As a way to be kind to the environment, do not put 

down insecticides unless you know you have a problem. However, be 

prepared during the hot summer months - July through September - to 

attack chinch bug damage. This will show up as irregularly shaped spots 

in the lawn along the concrete. Any liquid insecticide, like Permethrin 

or Cypermethrin, will treat the spot well. Then apply a granular insecticide 

like Deltamethrin or granular Permethrin in a broadcast applicator 

throughout the rest of the yard.

DIY CAR MAINTENANCE 

When was the last time you serviced your car ON YOUR OWN? Our 

pretty four wheels deserve attention, too and this means more than 

just a car wash. Here are a few tune-up tips you can do on your own: 

1. Air filter - You need a new air filter for your car every 12 months or 

12,000 miles, whichever comes first. You can pay a mechanic and give 

up your car for a day or you can replace your air filter at home in about 

ten minutes. 

2. Windshield Wipers - You’ll need new wiper blades after about 

six months or a year of use. You shouldn’t deal with the danger of 

streaking while you put off an inconvenient trip to the auto shop. 

3. Oil and filter - Experts say you should change your oil every 3,000 

miles, but with better products and cars operating more efficiently, 

you can get away with changing it every 5,000 miles. Whichever 

benchmark you decide to use, you can save time and money by 

handling the change yourself. 

4. Battery maintenance - if you’ve had the same battery for a few 

years, pop your hood every few months and take a look at the battery 

to see if it needs a simple cleaning.

LOCAL CHARITIES 

HOST 2 ND ANNUAL KATY COLOR RUN 

The 2 nd annual Katy Color Run will be held 

Saturday, April 7 th at Kingsland Baptist Church. 

The color-filled run will consist of a 5K run 

and a 1K kids’ dash. The community event 

will also feature entertainment, food trucks 

and vendors and a kids’ fun zone. Proceeds 

from the run will benefit local nonprofit organizations: 

Christ Clinic, Clothed by Faith, 

Compassion Katy, Hope Impacts and Katy 

Christian Ministries. The Ballard Foundation 

is the title sponsor of the event. 

The benefiting nonprofits provided thousands 

of people with medical, food, clothing and 

shelter needs after Hurricane Harvey. Christ 

Clinic offers medical care to uninsured and 

underinsured patients. Clothed by Faith gives 

gently used clothing to thousands of Katy 

area residents in need. Compassion Katy’s 

connects churches, businesses and nonprofits 

to provide solutions to meet the needs of the 

community. Hope Impacts imparts hope to 

homeless and under resourced people in the 

Katy area by connecting them to services and 

resources. Katy Christian Ministries offers food 

and emergency financial assistance to those 

in need and also offers many other resources 

to the community including a domestic abuse 

center and a resale store.

The Katy community is invited to support Cinco 

Ranch Future Business Leaders of America 

as they work to support The Arc of Katy by 

registering for the Color for a Cause 5K color

CAF HOUSTON WING’S WARBIRD 

WEEKEND AND OPEN HOUSE 

On Saturday and Sunday, April 14 th & 15 th from10 AM until 5 PM, those big, 

old airplanes with the mighty round engines will be flying again as the Commemorative 

Air Force’s Houston Wing presents its 2018 Warbird Weekend and 

Open House at Hangar B-5, West Houston Airport. Get up close and feel the 


prop wash and hear the noise as radial engines power these historic WWII 

aircraft. See some of the old planes your father, grandfather or grandmother 

learned to fly for World War II. 

Admission is $15 per CAR at the gate or $10 per car if ticket is purchased in

you a day of aircraft and military vehicle displays, museum exhibits and fun.

programs for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities

NATURE PROGRAMS FOR

This program is held on the fourth Saturday of each month at the Edith L. 

Moore Nature Sanctuary, held between 1 and 4 PM. A guided nature walk will 

begin at 2 PM. No reservations required. Donations are encouraged. This is a 

“whole family” program; parents or other adult guardians should participate 

with their children. Park in the Memorial Drive United Methodist Church

The Titmouse Club 

The Titmouse Club is a nature program for children ages 2 ½ to 5 sponsored 

by the Houston Audubon Docent Guild. The program is offered every Tuesday 

and Wednesday morning, 10 to 11 AM, from mid-September until mid-May at 

the Edith L. Moore Nature Sanctuary, 440 Wilchester Boulevard. Each week 

features a different nature theme and may include nature talks, stories,

Nature Explorers Club is designed for school-age children (ages 6-10,

Katy Community ‘Chip Clinic, a local non-profit, volunteer-run organization 

is pleased to announce its spring schedule of upcoming events to serve the 

needs of Katy-area residents. The organization offers $10 microchipping for 

pets with FREE lifetime registration! What is a microchip? A microchip is a 

rice-sized transponder that is injected between a pet’s shoulder blades with 

a needle. When getting ‘chipped, most animals don’t notice any difference 

from when receiving yearly vaccinations. A microchip does NOT have a GPS 

locator on it, but as long as the account is kept up-to-date, its number will 

be linked to the pet owner’s contact information. The microchip account 

is easily accessible online and pet owners can update as needed and even 

add pet’s photo and veterinarian info. 

Pet owners do not need to live in the same town as these upcoming events 

to take advantage of this service, but PLEASE NOTE: cash only and MUST 

bring rabies certification paperwork (not just the collar tag) - for volunteer 

and attendee safety. There is a limit of two pets per family, unless pre-approved. 

Cats should be in a secure carrier and dogs should be on a no-slip 

leash (please no retractable leashes).

As part of the Katy Independent School District, “Your District, 

Your Voice” initiative, the community has provided its input for 

the upcoming yearly instructional calendar. The Katy ISD Board 

of Trustees has approved the following option for the 2018-2019 

academic year:

“The District is required to have a minimum of 75,600 minutes of 

instruction per school year,” says Bonnie Holland, associate superintendent 

for administration, governance and legal affairs. “With 

the options approved, Katy ISD has enough calendar minutes to 

cover two bad weather days,” added Holland. 

K-12 Insight, the external research firm conducting the survey, 

found that, out of the 22,169 participants, 65% favored option #1. 

The Board also approved an instructional calendar for 2019-2020 

school year. This calendar mirrors the preferred components of 

the 2018-19 calendar.

Registration - Now Open! Registration for Fun, Fair, Positive Soccer 

(FFPS) is open for boys and girls ages 4 to 18 for the SPRING Season. 

Games start on April 7, 2018. FFPS is a non-profit youth soccer 

program dedicated to providing a positive youth sports experience 

for all children. Founded in 1986 in Katy, Texas, FFPS has grown to 

22 leagues and 16,000 players throughout the Greater Houston 

area. FFPS offers children a fun and fair experience, including one 

practice per week, a full uniform and trophy for every player, equal 

playing time and play every position, co-ed/balanced teams, positive 

coaching and more. No tryouts are required.

SPRING CLEANING YOUR HOME 

It’s 2018. A brand new year. A chance to start afresh, breathe in the new 

and make resolutions. While you’re feeling enthused about a year that’s 

new, now is the perfect time to look around your living space and start 

doing some spring cleaning. 

Gifts 

Are there any gifts you received over the holidays or for your birthdays over 

the years that you don’t like for whatever reason? Maybe they’re clothes 

that didn’t fit or perfume you didn’t like the smell of. Unless they hold 

sentimental value for you, let them go. Sell them. They’re taking up space. 

Jewelry 

If you have jewelry or lots of them, go through them all. Which ones still

Do you still have piles of old magazines, CDs, DVDs? Let them all go. If there 

are any that are of particular value, sell them and give the rest to charity. 

Appliances/Technology 

Most people have an appliance stored away that they have never used or 

hardly use. A coffee machine or smoothie maker, for instance. Any damaged 

ones you’ve been telling yourself you’ll fix one day or spare laptops 

or computers you rarely ever use can all be gotten rid of. 

Shoes/Clothes 

This is the last thing listed but is probably the first thing you should go 

through. However, you can build up to it by doing one of the things already 

listed. Unless you’re a minimalist, there are probably clothes and shoes of 

yours you can go through and say your goodbyes to. Challenge yourself 

to get rid of at least a quarter of it. For every three items you choose to 

keep, let go of one item. 

Spring cleaning can be freeing. You’re clearing energy. It can make your 

living space feel lighter and make you feel lighter too. Imagine how it’ll 

feel once you’ve finished spring cleaning your home, knowing that most 

of what you’ve chosen to keep is what you actually want. 

The New Year can also be a good time to start planning for any work you 

may want done on your home. If you live in an old building and plan on 

hiring someone to do the work for you, ensure they have the appropriate 

lead certification first.

Mulch - If possible, buy Bagged Mulch. Bagging 

helps eliminate a great many pests that die 

from various causes while in the bag. When you 

buy 'loose' mulch that is trucked to your home, 

you are also buying ants, roaches, termites, 

etc… Spend a little more on bagged material 

and save lots of future pest problems. Keep 

your mulch at least 4" - 6" below the top of your 

homes exposed foundation edge/side. This will 

aid in minimizing pests in your home and allow 

for quick and accurate termite inspections. 

Shrubs, Flowers and groundcovers - Trim 

all shrubs/plants at least 12" - 18" back from 

your home. Do your best to create a plant free 

zone that is 18" - 24" wide around your home. 

The exception is your lawn - it can grow up next 

to the slab as long as you keep it 4" - 6" below 

the top of the slab. The most conducive to 

termite infestation are groundcover plantings, 

growing high against your homes exterior or 

(especially) ivy that grows on your walls. 

Trees - Spray your trees at least twice annually. 

The spring spray eliminates overwintering 

pests and fungi while preparing trees to resist 

the pest onslaught of summer with residual 

pesticides. The fall spray also kills pests from 

the summer, prevents most fungi from occurring 

over the winter and puts your valuable 

asset off to a healthy winter's dormancy. 

Lawn - Spring is the perfect time to do a fungicide 

treatment to stop brown patch in its 

tracks along with other fungi. If your lawn is 

thin and weak in some areas, here are some 

important fundamentals: a) lawn aeration b) 

fertilization c) weed control. 

Most important is proper watering: 

• Water once per week (unless you get 

a 1/2" rain or more - then do not water.) 

• Water heavily (1" - 2") for total lawn coverage. 

• In severe drought, water every 5th day. 

• Water from 5 AM to 7 AM in the morning -

IRS TAX DEADLINE 

People have until Tuesday, April 17, 2018, to file their 2017 returns and pay any taxes 

due. The filing tax deadline is later this year due to several factors. The usual April 15 th 

deadline falls on Sunday this year, which would normally give taxpayers until at least the 

following Monday. However, Emancipation Day, a Washington, D.C., holiday, is observed 

on Monday, April 16 th , giving taxpayers nationwide an additional day to file. By law, 

Washington holidays impact tax deadlines for everyone in the same way federal holidays 

do. Taxpayers requesting an extension will have until Monday, Oct. 15, 2018, to file. 

The IRS expects more than 70 percent of taxpayers to get tax refunds this year. Last year, 

nearly 112 million refunds were issued, with an average refund of $2,895.

KATY RESIDENT RAISES MONEY TO HELP SCHOOLS, 

CLUBS AND ORGANIZATIONS 

For four years, Katy resident Dorothy Sanchez has worked to raise money in the 

hopes of helping local schools, clubs and organizations thrive. This year not only 

marked Sanchez’s fifteenth Scentsy fundraiser but her most successful one yet. In 

December, Sanchez presented Kelsey Peltier a check for $2,050.49 to go toward 

the Theatre Department at Poly Ryon Middle School. Peltier, the school’s theatre 

teacher incorporated the Scentsy fundraiser into an assignment for her theatre 

students who were able to raise the money in just two weeks.

On February 7, 2018, Katy Area Retired Educators 

(KARE) held their monthly meeting and raised 

funds for KARE scholarships through their annual 

Chocolate Auction. Guest speaker, Randolph Holford, 

a Professional Auctioneer, shared with them 

his passion for auctioneering and his involvement 

in Youth FFA. KARE meetings are once again being 

held at the Merrell Center. Thank you, Midway 

Barbeque, for hosting meetings during the restoration 

of the Merrell Center. KARE’s next meeting 

will be held on April 11, 2018, at the Merrell Center,

• CELEBRATE LOCAL ARTISTS - At the library, we love everything 

about our Katy community… including our local artists. This April, 

we have decided it is time to celebrate them! The entire month 

of April, local artists will be exhibiting their work throughout the 

library. Meet the artists at our opening reception on Saturday, April 

7 th at 6-8 PM. Come view their paintings and sculptures and get an 

idea of the viewpoints of our local fine artists. Also, come learn from 

them and all about them. Local artists will be teaching their crafts 

at our adult DIY workshop, Wednesday Wonders and Teen Makers.

• VOLUNTEER AT THE LIBRARY - Volunteer opportunities abound

• INFANT STORYTIME - This program will meet each Tuesday 

morning at 10:15 AM and 11:15 AM. This is an interactive program

CARAMEL PECAN PIE 

You could make this on National Caramel Day April 5th! 

INGREDIENTS: 

1 (9 inch) unbaked pie crust 

36 individually wrapped caramels, unwrapped 

1/4 cup butter 

1/4 cup milk 

3/4 cup white sugar 

3 eggs 

1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract 

1/4 teaspoon salt 

1 cup pecan halves 

DIRECTIONS: 

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C.) In a saucepan over low 

heat, combine caramels, butter and milk. Cook, stirring frequently, 

until smooth. Remove from heat and set aside. 

In a large bowl, combine sugar, eggs, vanilla and salt. Gradually mix in the 

melted caramel mixture. Stir in pecans. Pour filling into unbaked pie crust. 

Bake in the preheated oven for 45 to 50 minutes or until pastry is golden

BACON RANCH CHEESE BALL 

You could make this on National Cheeseball Day April 17th! 

INGREDIENTS: 

6 slices bacon 

2 (8 ounce) packages cream cheese, softened 

1 (1 ounce) package buttermilk Ranch dressing mix 

1/2 cup shredded sharp Cheddar cheese 

4 green onions, chopped 

3 tablespoons chopped black olives 

1 1/2 cups chopped pecans (optional) 

DIRECTIONS: 

Place the bacon in a large, deep skillet and cook 

over medium-high heat, turning occasionally, 

until evenly browned, about 10 minutes. Drain 

the bacon slices on a paper towel-lined plate. 

Chop the cooled bacon into small pieces. 

Stir together the cream cheese and ranch 

dressing mix in a bowl until smooth. Add the 

bacon, cheddar cheese, green onions and olives, stir until well combined. 

Shape the mixture into a ball and roll in the chopped pecans.

NOTTINGHAM COUNTRY GARDEN CLUB 

On Thursday, April 5, 2018, Nottingham Country Garden Club (NCGC) will 

feature Jacob Martin with a presentation on the History of Mercer Arboretum. 

He is the greenhouse manager at Mercer Botanic Gardens and has his 

own business outside of work called Old School Produce. He grows herbs 

and veggies for local restaurants. He loves very unusual plants especially 

ones that are edible or poisonous and prefers growing plants from seed 

but he also enjoys teaching about all forms of propagation. 

Meet and greet time begins at 9:30 AM and the program will start at 10 

AM, followed by the NCGC meeting. Please join us at the Municipal Utility

GET OUTSIDE WITH HIKE IT BABY 

Hike It Baby is a group dedicated to getting families together and out into 

nature across the Houston area. There are a huge variety of meet ups that 

range from urban strolls to trail hikes to playground dates and everyone 

is welcome - moms, dads, caretakers, even grandparents! The hikes are 

volunteer-led and free to participate in; all you have to do is join in the fun!

AREA BINGOS 

KATY ELKS LODGE BINGO 

The Katy Elks organization provides local scholarships to Katy ISD schools 

and assistance for special needs children in the Katy area and invites you 

to help support our community by playing Bingo at the following location 

and times: 1050 Katy Ft Bend Rd, Katy TX 77493. Every Tuesday and Thursday, 

doors open at 6:00 PM. We also serve food and drinks in our kitchen. 

EPIPHANY BINGO 

Epiphany conducts their bingo games every Friday night except holidays. 

There Is No Smoking Allowed During All Bingo Games. They have security, 

lighted parking, big screen color monitor, computerized bingo equipment, 

snack bar and large cash prizes. Profits benefit charitable outreach 

programs. Epiphany Catholic Church, Church Community Center, 1530 

Norwalk Dr. (between Fry and Mason Roads, south of I-10 behind Nottingham 

Subdivision) off Highland Knolls. Early bird games begin at 7:30 

PM and regular games at 8 PM. For more info, call the bingo hall number

ST. BARTHOLOMEW THE APOSTLE CATHOLIC 

CHURCH BINGO 

At St. Bartholomew the Apostle Catholic Church in downtown Katy, “BIN- 

GO” is being played in our Parish Hall every Friday evening except Holidays. 

Doors open at 7 PM, games start at 7:15 PM with four Early Bird games. 

Regular games start at 7:30 PM. All profits will benefit community outreach 

and Religious Education programs. The Church is located in downtown 

Katy at 5356 Eleventh St. You can get to the church if traveling west on 

Hwy. 90 to Katyland Rd. Turn right at the light, go to the second stop sign 

(at the stadium) Eleventh St., turn left and the Church Hall will be on your 

right one block down. For more info., call 281-391-4758. 

SAINT EDITH STEIN CATHOLIC CHURCH 

FRIDAY NIGHT BINGO 

Friday night BINGO is held the first Friday of February, May, June and August. 

This will be a fun evening for the entire family. Everyone can play including 

children. We offer a smoke and alcohol free environment. Cash prizes 

awarded for Regular BINGO and Special Games will range from $15 to $100. 

Snacks and refreshments will also be available. Doors open at 6:30 PM for 

BINGO card presales. Early Bird BINGO starts at 7 PM, Regular BINGO starts at 

7:30 PM. All BINGO events at Saint Edith Stein Catholic Church are operated 

under a license issued by the Texas Lottery Commission. Location: Carmel 

Hall, Saint Edith Stein Catholic Church, 3311 N. Fry Road, Katy, TX 77449.
