Developing understanding of the macroeconomic objectives of a real-world country.

Teacher Notes:
This is an investigative activity where students are expected to conduct research on a country of their
choice (but not the country in which your school is based). This could be completed as a group or class
activity but has been designed as an individual research activity.

1. What are the macroeconomic objectives of your chosen country?
2. To what extent do these objectives align with those outlined in Section 2.3 of the IB Economics Subject
Guide?
Background Knowledge
One of the ATL skills relates to conducting research. In this activity, you will use your research skills to
investigate the current macroeconomic objectives of a country other than your own. You will then use
your own creativity to determine how to present the findings from your research.
Task #1 / Activity
Economic theory suggests that governments have macroeconomic objectives which include low
unemployment rates, low and stable rates of inflation, good economic growth, and equitable distribution
of income. In this activity, you will undertake research in relation to real world applications of these
objectives.

Student Instructions
1. Choose any country to research other than your own.
2. Conduct research to determine the current macroeconomic objectives of the government of your
chosen country. Your research may include current unemployment rates, inflation rates, growth rates,
and income distribution figures; the current objectives of the government; the actions being taken to try to
achieve the government economic objectives; plus anything else you think is relevant.
3. Present your findings in any way you feel is appropriate, such as an information document,
presentation, report, or feature article, but make sure to appropriately cite and reference any sources.
Task #2 / Activity
This activity is an HL extension activity in which you will conduct research to demonstrate the trade-off
between the economic objectives of low unemployment and low and stable rates of inflation in your
chosen country in the previous activities.
Student Instructions
1. Conduct additional research to create a short-run Phillips curve diagram to demonstrate the trade-off
between the economic objectives of low unemployment and low and stable rates of inflation in your
chosen country.
