ON THIS MONTH: LITERATURE Victorians Undone Author-historian Kathryn Hughes “We have this slack idea that the Victorians were so very prudish and po-faced and out of touch with their bodies, that they didn’t really exist between their chins and their toes.” So says Kathryn Hughes, author of biographies of George Eliot and Isabella Beeton, who has just seen her latest book, Victorians Undone, published in paperback. “This was far from being the case. The reality was that they were living five to a room… working on factory benches, walking on ever-more crowded pavements, so their noses were constantly jammed into their neighbours’ armpits.” It follows that the Victorians must have been hyperaware of the bodies around them, she argues. And, of course, of their own. So what we perceive of as prudery and decorum is merely etiquette: “methods of speaking and carrying yourself in order to negotiate situations which would otherwise have been unbearably embarrassing.” The book has five sections, each of which focus on the body parts of different Victorians, eminent or otherwise. Thus we have chapters entitled ‘Lady Flora Hastings’ Belly’; ‘Charles Darwin’s Beard’; ‘George Eliot’s Hand’; ‘Fanny Cornforth’s Mouth’, and ‘Sweet Fanny Adams’. Each section, by focussing on the protagonist in question’s body part, attempts to explore what it felt like to be them, in the sort of warts-and-all detail that historical accounts would normally by-pass. The five sections have been boiled down from a shortlist of twenty. “I worked on one section - about the fact that Elizabeth Barrett Browning was mixed race - for a year,” she says, recalling her fascination of realising that this carried little social stigma in Barrett Browning’s lifetime; it wasn’t until the latter half of the century that attitudes on race became less progressive. “But the chapter didn’t make the cut, because I realised the story had already been told. I wanted my stories to be fresh and from completely new sources.” The book was eight years in the making, which means that while Hackney-based Kathryn was researching the Victorian trend for growing enormous beards – think Darwin, think Tennyson, think Ruskin - all the young hipster men around her started sporting their own. “I find it absolutely fascinating that it seems like a different world, but actually it’s not,” she says, “and it’s that balance that makes it so appealing.” All this required countless hours in archives and museums, fishing for salient facts she could use in her stories. “Nothing beats that feeling [of finding something]. You find yourself squealing with joy, and then you realise that you shouldn’t have, because of where you are.” And she was constantly surprised by what she found. “Human passions and emotions were pretty much the same then as they are now, of course. But they are expressed in different ways through different codes and behaviour. It’s very interesting, just when you think you recognise everything, the Victorians throw you a curve ball and it’s a different world altogether.” AL Kathryn is the last guest in the Lewes Literary Society’s 2017/18 season, All Saints, April 24th, 7.45pm 31
