EDITOR’S NOTE
Gone are the days when seniors
avoided new technology as if it were
radioactive. Not only are elderly folk
becoming quite computer literate
— thanks to classes, grandkids and/
or sheer intuition — tech companies
are coming out with new products
specifi cally aimed at this growing
market. Indeed, tech for seniors was
one of the biggest trends at this year’s
Consumer Electronics Show in Las
Vegas.
The worthy goal? Enhancing
possibilities for independent living.
Consider the upcoming Hip’Air
— with falls the leading cause of death among older Americans, a
French company has come up with an $800 airbag for hips, expected
to become available in the U.S. by the end of the year. Brenda Rees
scoured the fi eld for high-tech senior aids already on the market,
products to help the elderly eat, hear, take their meds and much more.
In this Savvy Seniors issue, Bettijane Levine talks to a freshly minted
senior who’s among Pasadena’s most accomplished rocket scientists
— JPL Senior Project Scientist Bonnie Buratti, author of Worlds Fantastic,
Worlds Familiar, a guide to the universe for civilians like us. Buratti weighs
in on women in science, Elon Musk’s cherry-red space Tesla, the prospect
of space war and other issues involving the great beyond.
Levine also explains the possible impact on seniors of the president’s
proposed cuts to Medicare and Medicaid — but don’t stress about that
yet. The cuts still need the approval of Congress, which is likely to include
more Medicare-defending Dems after the midterms.
