How to get to the Conference Venue -
Southport Theatre and Conference Centre
BY RO A D
Directions by Road:
From the South
Join the M6 and continue North until Junction 26.
Leave at Junction 26 and go straight ahead onto the M58 heading towards Southport/Skelmersdale.
Exit the M58 at Junction 3 signposted for Ormskirk.
From here follow signs for Southport (You will be travelling along the A570), after approx 10 miles you will enter
Southport.
Continue to follow signs for the Promenade/Town Centre.
The venue is situated on the main Promenade next to the Ramada Plaza Hotel .
The entrance to the car park is at the far end of the building.
From the North
Join the M6 and continue North until Junction 31.
Leave at Junction 31 and follow signs for the A59 towards Southport.
After approx 8.5 miles you will lead straight onto the A565 which will lead you into Southport.

The venue is situated on the main Promenade next to the Ramada Plaza Hotel.
The entrance to the car park is at the right hand side of the building.
The side streets off the Promenade are all similar tariffs but it’s best to check the nearest ticket machine for the
correct tariff, as there are slight differences in time restrictions/hours of operation depending on where they are.

Directions by Air:
With 3 airports less than an hour away, Southport is easily accessible by air:
Liverpool John Lennon Airport is one of the UK’s largest established operational airports, and
is located 7 miles from Liverpool City Centre with major operators including KLM, Ryanair,
Easyjet and Wizz Air. Liverpool John Lennon Airport is fully integrated into the North West’s
public transport system and located just ten minutes from the major motorway network
making it easily accessible.
Blackpool International Airport offers passengers a congestion-free alternative for air travel
in and out of the Northwest. It is conveniently located at the end of the M55 which links up
with the M6 and has public transport links nearby.
Manchester International Airport is one of the UK’s most accessible international gateways
operating to more than 200 destinations. You can connect to the airport via a number of
options including train, coach and road links.
Direction by Sea:
Direct ferry crossings from Belfast, Dublin and the Isle of Man to
Liverpool, Birkenhead, Holyhead and Wallasey.
BY TAXI, BUS ORCOACH
Once you have arrived in Southport, it’s easy to get around with a number of local taxi companies who
can transport you door to door. If you require a taxi when you’re in the town, Kwik Cars provide a
reliable service and they can be contacted on 01704 547 000.

With a network of travel centres across Merseyside, Merseytravel and Stagecoach operate a number of
bus services to and from Southport.
National Express coaches serve Southport from all major UK towns and cities
making the town easily accessibly by coach.

BY RAIL
Directions by Rail:
A frequent rail service runs from Southport to Liverpool Central Station and Manchester Stations.
From the station, you can either walk the short distance to the Promenade or take a taxi from outside the
station.
There are rail connections to Southport from most parts of the country via the Wigan and Manchester
stations.
Northern Rail: Operate regular services to Southport from Manchester Airport. Manchester (Piccadilly,
Oxford Road and Victoria stations) & Bolton and Wigan.
Connecting services to & from the North East and Yorkshire are available at Manchester Piccadilly and from
the North, Scotland and the South at Wigan.
Merseyrail: Run fast and frequent services between Liverpool South Parkway (for Liverpool John Lennon
Airport), Liverpool City Centre and Southport.

The Institute’s General Meeting and Conference has been an annual event for 57 years, with
high quality and professional education for its members. This year’s conference programme is
without exception and has been designed to continue to cater for the wide range of interests
and skills that our membership has with the focus on learning new skills in the ever changing
field of Podiatry.
However, some of the most rewarding learning often occurs during the coffee breaks in the
trade exhibition where we view new products, techniques and skills demonstrated by the
experts. This is also a place where old friends are reunited and new alliances are forged. The
conference offers us opportunities to ensure that we have the tools to practice at the very
highest level, thereby ensuring both our own future and the future of the Profession.

Admission to any conference session is by badge
and wristband Only. Please ensure you are in your
seat at least five minutes prior to the start of each
session and that your mobile phones/pagers are
switched OFF or turned to SILENT.

conference. If you lose your badge please report
immediately to the Registration Desk and you will be

Dr Helen Emms qualified from Liverpool University in 1996, she has trained throughout
Merseyside and Cheshire. She has worked in the specialist field of palliative care since
2000. She was appointed as a Consultant in palliative medicine at Wirral University
Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in 2006. She is currently the clinical lead for
Wirral community based specialist palliative care service. Her main clinical interests are
management of cancer related neuropathic pain and prevention of malignant
pathological fractures.
Mr Emms is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon who specialises in hip and
knee surgery. He is a Consultant at St Helens and Knowsley Teaching
Hospitals NHS Trust.
Initially from Yorkshire, he did his undergraduate training at the University of
Liverpool qualifying in 1996. He underwent basic and higher surgical training
in hospitals across the Mersey region and was awarded fellowship of the
Royal College of Surgeons of England in 2006.
Mr Emms spent 18 months in Sheffield as the “Cavendish Hip Fellow”. During this time he
worked at the Northern General Hospital in one of Europe’s leading lower limb units. In
Sheffield he undertook complex hip and knee operations, gaining significant experience in
primary, complex primary and revision procedures of the hip and knee in cases of infection,
loosening, instability, bone loss and childhood developmental problems of the hip. He has
an ongoing research interest and has been involved in numerous projects through his career
presenting at local, national and international levels. He has numerous publications in the
field of lower limb surgery.
He was appointed as a Consultant at St Helens and Knowsley Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust
in May 2008 providing a service in primary and revision arthroplasty of the hip and knee. He
is clinical lead for the joint replacement service, infection control in surgery and in the
management of metastaic bone disease.
He continues to develop the service at St Helens and Knowsley enhancing the departments
growing reputation.

Suzanne has been a practising Chiropodist since 1992.
She has been employed at the Institute`s Sheffield training
Centre since 1994, involved mainly in practical tutoring and
training on a variety of courses.
Suzanne also works part time in private practice.
She is especially interested in all things practical and
particularly enjoys being involved in workshops where
practitioners work together thereby sharing knowledge
and learning from each other.
Why should you book on the Padding and Strapping workshop?
Within the profession, especially if working as a lone practitioner, many say that they miss the
interaction and contact with colleagues. This workshop gives the opportunity to do this.
We shall go back to basics with Padding and Strapping and being a fully interactive workshop we
shall work together in small groups to solve everyday “problems/scenarios” which may be
encountered in practice. We shall actually manufacture devices, possibly using previously
unfamiliar products.
The aim will be to share knowledge and skills and leave with new ideas which can be put into
action immediately in practice. So bring your scissors and come along and get involved!!
I’m Michelle Weddell
I qualified from Salford University in 1992 and up to November
2009 I have worked in the NHS.
The last trust I worked for I was the Lead Podiatrist for Diabetes,
tissue viability and vascular disease. I went to East Lancs in 2001 to
develop diabetic foot services –instigating diabetic foot
screening, foot ulceration clinics in primary and secondary care
and a community vascular screening programme for all patients.
I did my supplementary prescribing in 2006.
I moved into sales in November 2009 to work for Algeos Ltd
providing sales, support and training for podiatrists in the NHS and
private sectors.

I trained in Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) at the Vodder Akademie in Austria. I
chose the Vodder method as it has the widest range of clinical applications for
MLD, as the therapy can be very wide ranging. Additionally, the Professor at the
Akademie had learned the technique first hand from Dr Vodder himself, so I
wanted to get as close to the original method as possible. MLD is widely used in
Austria for a wide variety of conditions, from wound and ulcer healing, post
surgery recovery, to reducing tremours in Parkinson's patients. In Germany, every
physiotherapist uses MLD in order to reduce swelling, bruising and pain before
asking the patient to exercise. In the UK, MLD is approved on the NHS only for the
treatment of lymphoedema and there are about 250 therapists practising
privately, in NHS lymphoedema clinics, or hospices.
I run a busy private practice, doing home visits and treating in clinics in Oxfordshire and the
Cotswolds. Although the main cause of lymphoedema in the western world is after breast cancer
surgery, I have been finding large amounts of patients with lymphodema, or lympho-venous
insufficiency of the lower limbs that have been overlooked by GP's and left untreated. The disease is
incurable, and only manageable through use of Combined Decongestive Therapy and suitable
compression garments, so early diagnosis and correct treatment are imperative if the patient is to
maintain quality of life.
I became the second person in the UK fortunate enough to be able to study under Professor Berens
von Rautenfeld at the Veterinary University at Hannover, in the treatment of equine and canine
lymphoedema, so I do spend a lot of time also treating performance horses and family pets for
anything from tendon injuries, post operative oedema and arthritis.
It is my hope to share some knowledge with the Members of the Institute, so that not only will they
gain a deeper understanding of what lymphoedema is and what can be done about it, but also that
we can help catch this disease in its early stages and help maintain our patients' quality of life.
In my spare time, I am designing a compression garment to assist lymphoedema in horses, as well as
trying to set up a School of Equine MLD here in the UK. I am currently training part time for a BSc in
Adult Nursing, and volunteer at my local hospice.
I am a Member of the British Lymphology Society and MLD UK.

Matthew Rothwell qualified as a podiatrist from Huddersfield University in
2000, after working extensively for the NHS in Huddersfield and Sheffield he
began teaching in 2008 as a Senior Lecturer at the University of Huddersfield.
His principle interests in Podiatry are in Podiatric Surgery, MSK and High Risk
Diabetes Foot Care. Matthew also leads modules in Pharmacology, Local
Anaesthesia and Peripheral Vascular disease.
Qualifications: MSc Theory of Podiatric Surgery, PGCert Diabetes and Tissue
Viability, PGCert Professional Development, BSc (hons) Podiatry, Member of
the Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists, Fellow of the Higher Education
Academy.
Martin lives in Staffordshire and has a busy private extended-scope
podiatry practice in an NHS multi-discipline Health Centre in
Tamworth. He is an alumnus of New College Durham, Sunderland
University, Birmingham City University and Hertfordshire University
and has an honours degree in Health Studies, a BSc in Podiatric
medicine, plus postgraduate qualifications in Supplementary
Prescribing and Skin Surgery.
A member of the Institute since the early 1990’s he is also an member of the Association of Surgeons
in Primary care and the Royal Society of Medicine.
He represents the Institute on the Department of Health AHP Medicines prescribing project board
and various working groups associated with it such as the National Prescribing Centre.
Outside of work he is an enthusiastic, and frequently greasy, classic car owner (Spartan V6 roadster),
collects and shoots historic and modern firearms, enjoys walking and snorkelling, and is a proud
Grandfather 5 times over.
Robert Sullivan is a progressive Podiatry Clinician who holds a BSc. (Hons)
Podiatry, and post graduate Certificates in prescription only medicines,
local anaesthesia, Homoeotoxicology and post graduate diplomas in nail
and skin surgery and podiatric surgery. Robert is awaiting award of his
MSc. (TPod. Surg) from Queen Margaret University in Edinburgh later this
year.
Over the last 15years he has lectured at CPD events in Ireland, the United
Kingdom and Europe. He has also been guest lecturer at various
universities in Ireland, the UK and Europe. Robert has published papers in a
number of podiatry journals both nationally and internationally and is a
surgical demonstrator at clinical events. His special interests are Surgery,
Rheumatology and biomechanics.
Robert is the current Chair of the Institute of Chiropody and Podiatry Board
of Education.
