ISSUE
Founder's Message
Hi Everyone,
So we are now on the 6th issue of
'Community Spirit' online magazine.
I think that we can all agree that March was a very busy and mad month!
It's wonderful that the summer feeling is here and business seems to be
picking up for everyone. We now have a new 'Local Business Directory'
in the magazine which is free for subscribers to be listed.
I'd like to dedicate this issue to Ken Ashley from Pedralba who recently
passed away on 29th March 2018.
Also a big thank you to everyone who has been sending me ideas and
suggestions, I love it that each month more and more people are getting
involved. So you can continue to send info to
THINGS TO DO
A BREATH OF FRESH AIR!
Exclusive interview with the owners,
Ghislain Mouton and Jeremy Trizzulla of
Delta o2 in Valencia.
1 NO.
So this year I thought that it
would be a great idea to
start transforming my
lifestyle and trying out new
alternative therapies and
wellbeing treatments. As I
am such an open-minded
person, I thought that it
would be a great idea to
experience treatments
which are really unusual and
different! So I was sitting at a
cafe in Valencia talking with
my friends Kelly Darling and
Ben Eilers, when she
mentioned a new business
that offers oxygen healing
treatments which has just
opened in Valencia. As it
sounded just like the kind of
thing I was thinking of!
So we finished our coffee
and walked down to their
new centre on the Calle del
Doctor Ferrán, number 13
(46021), which is an awesome
street address for a healing
centre, don´t you think! We
popped in to say ´Hallo´ and
where kindly met by Benoît Roul
and Jeremy Trizzulla at the front
desk.
Benoit and Jeremy are both
French and speak Spanish, and
Benoit speaks English, so
considering all of that, we had a
great conversation and arranged
to setup an interview with one of
the associate Ghislain Mouton for
the following week.
THE INTERVIEW
Richard: “So can you tell me more
about who you are and why you
decided to setup your business
here in Valencia?”
Ghislain: “OK, let me introduce
myself first, I was born in the
North of France, I studied as an
engineer in informatics (IT) and I
have been working in Switzerland,
Geneva for 6 years. I wanted to
get rid of my job, I didn’t want to
do it anymore, but wasn't sure
what I wanted to do! I really
wanted to change my life and so I

Richard speaks with Ghislain
thought I need to go to a new
country and have a new life
experience. I have a friend in
Valencia, so I thought it would be
good to visit them and see what
happens. I love the city and I love
Valencia, when I got here I thought I
would originally open a wine bar,
nothing to do with oxygen at all!”
Richard: “Well maybe!”
Ghislain: “Yes, maybe! But in the
end it didn’t work and I went to a
meeting organised by French people
with French entrepreneurs that they
have created here in Valencia and
this is where I met Jeremy and
Benoit. They already had this oxygen
centre but it was in Paterna, about
15 km away from Valencia. There
were not that many people
interested in it and they wanted to
move, they had the machine, the
centre, the idea and everything to
start except they didn’t have the
money to make it a success and
move to the centre of Valencia. So,
after a few few talks we decided to
start working together and become
equal partners in business together."
Richard: “What was it that
made you think it was more
interesting than a wine bar?”
Ghislain: “After we met, me
and my wife decided to go and
try out the oxygen chamber
because we had never tried it
before. We liked it so much
that we had several sessions to
start with and at the time
living in a high tower on the
seventeenth floor. I always
wanted to use the stairs and
not the lift, but it was
impossible before I started
doing the oxygen treatment.
After the second session of
oxygen therapy, I could climb
the seventeen flights of stairs
without being tired or running
out of breath! It was amazing
the difference on my body!”
Richard: “Wow, so the
treatment gives you more
energy, a lot more energy. A
super power energy.”
Ghislain: “Exactly, and that
convinced me to work with
with Jeremy and Benoit with this oxygen
treatment because of the quick changes
to my body, that was the living proof of it
working.”
Richard: “So this is a high tech healthcare
system, using technology that most
people haven’t heard of yet. It very
interesting.”
Ghislain: “It was used for a long time for
diving incidents.”
Richard: “That is what I thought, when
you think of oxygen you think of diving.”
Ghislain: “Exactly, if you dive into water
and go 50 meters down in the water and
you go down one way, you have to stop at
35 meters for 3 to 4 minutes, if you don’t,
you get the decompression problem. This
program is used to help people recover
from this problem, the therapy has been
borrowed from this program. This is the
first reason they exist, now they are used
for many, many things.”
Richard: “So, if I was just walking down
the street and walked into a place like
this, what are the benefits, what is the
purpose of having this treatment?”
2 0 C O M M U N I T Y S P I R I T

Ghislain: “One of the first benefits
if you travel a lot is to recover
from jet lag because in a plane, the
oxygen density is lower than
normal and if you stay a long time
in this atmosphere your body is
weakened fighting against bacteria
and maybe the viruses that people
bring with them on the plane.
More, your internal clock (pineal
gland) needs a lot of oxygen in
order to work properly and
efficiently and to allow you to
recover from jet lag”
Richard: “So, the pineal gland is
controlling all that internal clock,
the internal planning that tells you
what and when to do things.”
Ghislain: “Yes, when you sleep.”
She can now play football in the park
with her grandchildren, she can cross
the street to the market and come
back and still do things! It’s given her a
whole new lease of life. For sportsmen
also it works great, we have 4 people
who came before the last marathon
and they increased their performance.”
Richard: “So, adding more oxygen into
your blood is obviously does
something quite powerful to you, so
what is the science behind it?”
Ghislain: “The oxygen goes to every
part of the body traveling with blood,
cells, every part, it produces the
energy to improve its functioning.”
Richard: “Does this mean we are not
getting enough oxygen in our body?”
Richard: “It is almost like becoming
superhuman or something. Is the
pollution in the atmosphere slowing us
down and making us tired?”
Ghislain: “Superhuman, may be not …
but as a sportsman leaving far away
from contamination, who takes care of
his body, eat well, do exercises, breath
pure air without smoking or drinking.”
Richard: “Presumably it helps you to
rejuvenate your body and makes you
look and feel younger?”
Ghislain: “Yes, and your skin is
smoother and elastic the wrinkles
decrease.”
Richard: "So, what if you have a
tattoo?"
Richard: “So, what other
benefits?”
Ghislain: “We also have more
energy, your limits will be higher!
You can walk for 2 hours before
you get tired but with the oxygen
therapy you can walk 4 hours!”
Richard: “Is this also for any ages,
normally, for example, when you
get older, you find it harder to
breathe?”
Ghislain: “Yes, we have a
neighbour here her name is Pura.
She is 77 years old and before
having her oxygen treatment here
she was with her grandchildren
and she wanted to play with them,
but she couldn’t because she got
tired by just crossing the street to
come here and go back to her flat!
But after the sixth session here it
started to transform her life!
Ghislain: “No, this is not that it’s more
the fact that many cells don’t receive
enough nutrients and oxygen for a
normal functioning. Why ? Because the
body becomes older and alternates
each day, blood vessels also because of
everydays bad treatments (alcohol, bad
food, contamination, pollution,
tobacco, etc). Vessels get more and
more clogged and so many cells are in
lack of oxygen and don’t function at
100%. Hypebaric oxygen therapy helps
you to breathe 15 times more oxygen
and this oxygen is stocked in your
body (this stocking function is very
important because in normal
condition, breathing in an air with 21%
of oxygen, it is immediately used by
cells and cannot be stocked). This
stock of oxygen will help renovating all
the body blood cells altered with time
and so all the cells will will be able
again to receive all the necessary
nutrients and oxygen. ”
Ghislain: “I tried this, you need 1 or 2
months for the scar to heal, this tattoo
was made one and a half weeks ago,
after 2 sessions of 6 hours and 15 days
after with 5 sessions of oxygen therapy
the scaring had gone.”
Richard: “I was thinking, for example,
with things like wounds from
accidents?”
Ghislain: “Yes, also other things like
blisters and things that you have deep
inside that are disgusting and open,
with this therapy you need less time to
cure them.”
Richard: “It is interesting because this
is technical scientific healing, that’s
coming from the inside of the person. I
am amazed that so few people have
heard about this!”
2 2 C O M M U N I T Y S P I R I T

Richard inside the oxygen
chamber.
Ghislain: “Exactly, it is quite old, it mainly began to develop in the 60’s.
Now, It is very common in South America and Asia also it is very
developed in Canada and the United States.”
Richard: “How come it is popular there?”
Ghislain: “We don’t know why. The good question should be ‘Why isn’t it
popular?’I don’t understand. You can only find hyperbaric oxygen
treatments in hospital or clinics focused with the most important cases of
diving accident or illnesses with very high prices that make the treatment
unaffordable for the masses if it’s not refunded by social security or
private insurances. But for everyone's wellness, for prevention, for
sportsman, for beauty, for jet lag … and many other benefits ... we all
should be able to benefit from it to increase our health without taking
medicine. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy hasn’t been developed here for the
moment. That’s why we are here!”
Richard: “Without taking medicines? Maybe laboratories don’t want
people to use this because of the financial implications?”
Ghislain: “It is probably that. In Europe, with the help of social security,
there are always medicaments for everything and everyone .. even for
nothing, hahaha …”
Richard: “I notice here in Spain, every town, village or wherever you will
see these big green crosses and it is like every town has at least 3 or 4 or
these pharmaceutical shops.”
Richard: “So, how much does this cost per session?”
Ghislain: “We have the cost of one session is 30 euros, but one session is
not useful, maybe for headaches or things like that but we mostly sell a
package of 5 or 10 sessions, if you buy 5 sessions it is 24 euros per session
and with 10 sessions it brings the session at 18 euros.”
Richard: “Is that 10 days, or 10 weeks how does that work?”
Ghislain: “It can be what you want, it can be 10 days if you want, in the
beginning, it is good to do 5 sessions every day and after 1 or 2 each week
depending on each person. When you have the package, there is no lapse
time, you can do whatever you want. The most logic is to do the 5 sessions
or 10 as close together as possible, then you can have 1 or 2 each week to
keep your first charge of oxygen so your body will not feel lack of oxygen.”
Richard: “I did think these look a little
like capsules that you would use in a
spaceship. Like a Sci-Fi film. It reminds
me of the song by David Bowie, ‘Ground
Control to Major Tom."
Richard: “I have always known that the
pineal gland is your connection to the
Universe, do you know much about
that?
Richard: “Are there any side effects from
it, like does your hair fall out?”
Ghislain: “No, but the oxygen can be toxic
if you do more than two hours per day, we
never do more than that, one and a half
hours which is our maximum time, for the
tattoo I do one and a half hours, 5 sessions
of one and a half hours.”
“The equipment is made so that it will
automatically turn off after 2 hours
maximum. Another thing there are no side
effects, but some contraindications, for
example : a pregnant woman, a person
who sufffers from epilepsy without
treatments, a person with a recent surgery
from the ear-drum, a person that is in
treatment for a cancer, a person that has a
pacemaker made before 2009 that does
not support pressure as well as the newest
one….”
Richard: “So, it is the pressure thing?”
Ghislain: “You will feel a little bit like you
are taking off in a plane, you will notice a
little bit of pressure on your ears, it will do
exactly the same. If you have a cold It is
better to wait a little bit. These are the
only conditions you should not have the
treatment.”
Richard: “I find it amazing that the
human body can heal itself and
with the right technology it can do
even more!”
Ghislain: “That is right it can do
anything and oxygen is the best
NATURAL healing element for us to
take.”
Richard: “It is healing the body, it is
rejuvenating the body. What about
the pineal gland, can you tell me
more about that?”
Ghislain: “The pineal gland is
something that is located under
your brain and when you get older
the less your pineal gland works
because its walls gets calcificated.
It’s a very vascularized gland and
when calcifying itself, many blood
vessels disappear each time and so
less and less oxygen is brought to
the gland … and it has less and less
oxygen to produce the melatonine
Under pressure, the oxygen
stocked in the cerebrospinal fluid
goes through the pineal gland walls
and brings it the necessary element
to produce good level of melatonin
again. It seems that one hour of
sleep in the oxygen chamber is
equal to 4 hours of sleeping at
home.”
Ghislain: “No, I do not know that much
about that. We have a friend here, his
name is Mark, he is very interested in
these kinds of things and when he has a
session in one of the chambers he says
he has many things that come to him
through his third eye. We have many
clients who have fallen asleep in the
chambers and they have deep dreams,
maybe because the oxygen feeds the
pineal gland which is linked to this third
eye, they tell us of some remarkable
dreams.”
Editor's Note
After the session, I drove home. I was
bit tired after spending an hour in the
oxygen chamber and suddenly noticed
I'd taken the wrong turning off the
Cv-35 to get to Lliria. I ended up going
down a road to Benaguasil which I had
never been on before and didn't know
how to get off it! So I took a side route
and just as I was driving back into Lliria,
I saw a massive advert for Delta o2 on
the side of a van in a carpark!
It was absolutely amazing!! I had to take
a photo. I felt like I had been guided
here on purpose. It was weird. I think it
was having a big effect on my pineal
gland!
over the following days I felt a lot fitter!
I did a 15 km walk to my local village and
back without feeling tired at all! Also I
started to feel a lot more positive about
the big challanges I was facing in my life
and as if anything was possible! I had
lost that feeling recently, so was very
grateful to have it back! So if you like
scientific healing treatments that make
you feeling amazing, then give it a go!
The
ASTROLOGICAL
MOON
The Key to Happiness Hidden in The Subconscious
Written by Radilina Shanova
Popular astrology is commonly
centered around the Sun (or Star)
signs. The minimum most people
know about their astrological profile
is if they were born a Gemini, a
Capricorn or a Leo etc. And this is
just the position of the Sun (among
9 other planets) in the birth chart. It
is only one of the many factors that
make up the complex set of
psychological predispositions and
potential character traits of a
person which a comprehensive
chart reading can reveal. Naturally,
many people do not fully or even
partially identify with the qualities
attributed to a particular zodiac sign
and thus feel there is good reason to
doubt the accuracy and reliability of
astrology.
There is an explanation behind the
discrepancies and contradictions of
Sun sign astrology. Important as it
is, the Sun sign placement puts
people in 12 categories that
oversimplify the shared
characteristics between them and it
accounts only for one of two,
equally significant, halves of the
personality. The Sun sign stands for
the reason-oriented, conscious and
deliberate nature of what motivates
us to follow a certain path and set
our long-term goals. But there is a
missing link, which makes every
Scorpio, Cancer or Sagittarius
different from every other born
under that same Sun sign – the
position of the Moon in the
astrological chart. While it is
relatively easy to figure out what
our Sun sign is (they change
position at about the same time
every month and it is common
knowledge that most Virgos are
born in September and Arians in
April), the Moon sign is trickier to
calculate and remains generally
disregarded. Yet, it is not only as
essential, but arguably, even more
defining of a person’s character.
Which is the reason that, if knowing
about it, most people would readily
recognize themselves in the
archetypal qualities of their Moon
sign.
I will briefly explore below what the
Moon is about in astrology and why
it holds the key to our personal
wellbeing.
The Moon is
also
intrinsically
connected to
what we call
the
‘inner child’
within us...
ASTROLOGY / 29
The Inner Emotional World
Only half of what we are belongs to the
realm of thought and logic – the
functions of the mind and
consciousness. The other half, which is a
lot more subjective and unconscious, is
what constitutes our emotions and
instinctive responses to life. The two are
the head and the heart of the
personality. The active and projecting
and the restrained and receptive. The
Yang and the Ying. Rationality and
intuition. All are at the same time
conflicting and complementary pairs of
which the former stands for the
psychological function of the Sun while
the latter represents the Moon’s
significance and meaning.
The sign the natal Moon is placed in
provides information about what rules a
person’s inner world – the feelings,
instinctual nature and hidden
motivation behind their actions. It
specifies the particular manner in which
they will be inclined to react to all that
comes their way from the outside world.
Like the lens of a camera, reflecting and
distributing the sunlight in a distinctive
way, the 12 possible faces of the Moon
show how a person would expectedly
respond to external influences - to both
positive and negative stimuli. It speaks
about their style of adaptation and
perception of the environment they live
in.
The essence of what the Moon is in
astrology is reflected in the words of the
famous film director Steven Spielberg,
who says: ‘Your intuition is different
from your conscience. They work in
tandem, but here’s the distinction: your
conscience SHOUTS – here’s what you
should
do! While your intuition WHISPERS –
here’s what you could do! Listen to that
voice that tells you what you could do, as
nothing is going to define your character
more than that.’ The message of that
quiet, often difficult to hear voice that
Spielberg is referring to can be derived
from the specific position of the Moon in
a natal chart, and especially by the sign it
falls in.
While people born within the same
month often share the same Sun sign,
the Moon changes signs every two and a
half days. It moves much faster and
travels the wheel of the whole Zodiac in
approximately 28 days. Thus, people
born within hours from each other may
have different Moon signs. The Moon is
therefore one of the most individual
factors in a birth chart. Gemini are
known to be curious and chatty, Libras
are usually delicate and refined and
Pisces tend to be moody and artistic. But
a Gemini Sun with the Moon in Aries is a
completely different beast from a
Gemini with the Moon in Scorpio, for
example.
Personal Needs and Happiness
Two people having the same Sun signs
implies that they would likely share a
similar vision and overall sense of life
purpose and direction.
THE MOON HAS A
LOT TO THE MOON
HAS A LOT TO DO
WITH OUR EVER-
CHANGING,
WHIMSICAL
MOODS.DO WITH
But if one has the Moon in Cancer while
the other the Moon in Sagittarius, their
everyday needs, what makes them feel
secure and protected, as well as the
things that bring them joy and emotional
release will be very different. The sense
of balance and wellbeing we all need in
order to function and be ‘in shape’
depends on how well we have integrated
our Moon nature. Every Moon sign has
to be fed its specific food. It shows what
kind of nurturing, both physical and
psychological, someone seeks and is also
likely to give to others. This is why it is
also related to how we are feeling with
ourselves when alone, at home or when
only surrounded by familiar people or
circumstances. It is also our instinctive
first reaction during a crisis situation,
when there is no time to contemplate.
The Moon has a lot to do with our everchanging,
whimsical moods. It is so
instinctual that it is very hard, if not
impossible, to control.
A great deal of decision making takes
places on the basis of the emotions and
moods rather than objective, rational
thinking. And when the inner emotional
‘climate’ that the Moon represents is
turbulent and unstable, behaviour can
turn destructive in a lot of different
ways – food disorders, lack of care for
the body, depression, compulsive habits,
mental and physical blockages. When
the specific emotional needs have been
disregarded and we are not paying
attention to them, the unconscious
demands of the psyche still compel us to
listen, but in a way that we no longer
have control over the direction we take.
OUR EVER-
CHANGING,
WHIMSICAL MOODS.

ASTROLOGY / 30
The Moon is the channel through which all other energies and functions of the organism pass before they are able to play
their designated role. It is a kind of filter or top-skin layer of perception and if our Moon doesn’t work, nothing else in the
chart does.
Relationships and Compatibility
The Moon is also intrinsically connected to what we call the ‘inner child’ within us, that basic attitude we carry since early
childhood. It is the inner child nature which accounts for the types of relationships we enter into and the people we
instinctively feel good and safe with. Starting with the role of the mother with all its complex implications on everyone’s
early development (the sign of our Moon talks about our perception of the mother) and going on to all sorts of intimate
relationships later in life. Thus, compatibility with other people, both in intimate terms within the couple, and in the more
general social field, has a lot to do with synchronizing the specific Moon needs of the those involved. Comparing two
people’s Moon placements can provide invaluable clues on how they will be likely to interact and merge emotionally.
The prominent writer of astrology Steven Forrest says that ‘The Moon is here and now. It tells you what to do immediately
if you want to be happier’ and also that ‘to benefit from the secret of happiness, to attune truly to the Moon, we need to
stop thinking. We need to feel. We must cultivate the fine art of recognizing and succumbing to …whimsy.’ It all comes
down to learning how to take care of ourselves which puts us in the position of being able to help others as well.
Below is a general guideline that Mr. Forrest provides on each Moon placement by sign. To find out what your Moon sign is,
you can go to www.astro.com or www.astrotheme.com, among other online sites, where a birth chart can be calculated, or
consult an astrologer for further information.
OBITUARY
Sadly, on the morning of Thursday 29th March 2018, a well
respected and popular resident of Pedralba, passed away
unexpectedly.
A TRIBUTE TO THE LIFE OF KEN ASHLEY
Ken Ashley was a well-known figure in Pedralba and the surrounding
areas, easily recognized by his love of cowboy style hats and his
faithful dog, Megan!
Ken had lived in Pedralba for the last 15 years, having retired from the
West Midlands where he had an important role in the Fire Service for
many years. He brought a wealth of knowledge with regarding fire
safety and his knowledge onto everyone through talks for the local
society to raise awareness of the dangers of fire and how to deal with
subsequent emergencies. His talks were both amusing and of great
value, especially when he donned his full fire service clothing!
But Ken, with his zest for life, did not simply retire, move to Spain and
do the occasional talk on fire safety. He brought with him his guitar
and his passion for all music but in particular country music and Irish
music. You could always find Ken at the social gathering, singing and
playing to the delight of those around him. His voice will live on in
many people's hearts with the words of the Jim Reeves song "I Love
You Because" which was almost his signature song to those of us
who live in Pedralba.
His love of music led him to join the Pedralba choir, where he would
sing solo, sometimes accompanying himself on his guitar. One of my
personal favourites is his rendition of 'White Christmas' with Marina, a
Spanish singer from Pedralba.
When the Choir Conductor / Organizer had to step down, Ken, after a
little gentle persuasion, took on the role and gave his heart and soul
to ensure that the Choir carried on performing the traditional
Christmas Carol concert in the church. Ken, as usual, gave it his all.
Ken was also a great supporter of the local animal rescue society,
together with his wife, Heather, he spent many hours helping out at
the refuge, dog walking, clearing up, feeding and generally helping
with everything including construction! He also gave up his time to
play and sing at events and was a firm favourite with our Spanish
friends.
Our friend, Ken Ashley, will be sorely missed, not just by his wife
Heather and his 3 children and 6 grandchildren, but by all of us
whose lives he has touched.
Ayurvedic Detox & Weight Loss
Ayurvedic Detox
The practice of cleansing is a vital part of
any Ayurvedic lifestyle. It provides an
essential means of clearing accumulated
waste and toxicity from the mind and
tissues to encourage optimal health.
In today’s world, a regular cleansing
regime is more critical to our health than
ever before. Our bodies process
seemingly endless waves of harmful
inputs such as environmental toxins,
processed foods, unresolved emotional
blocks and psychological stress. Over
time, these factors can cause toxicity to
accumulate in the body, deposit in the
tissues, and compromise our health. A
regular cleanse helps to clear these
toxins from the body.
In addition to drinking plenty of
detoxifying fluids, this particular cleanse
based on eating a mono-diet of whole
grains and kitchari tailored to each
constitution. Following doctor advice
ayurvedic treatments and specific
herbal remedies are prescribed to
regulate digestion, ease elimination, and
support the body’s natural
detoxification processes. This regime
endorses the physiology by slowing the
flood of harmful inputs and provides the
body with the vital opportunity to rest,
recover and heal itself.
A simple cleanse can help to:
Improve digestion and metabolic
functions
Promote regular and balanced
elimination.
Support a healthy body weight.
Nurture an improved sense of
energy, vitality, and enthusiasm for
life.
Encourage a balanced sleep cycle.
Improve overall health.
Weight Loss
Obesity is one of the most common
health issues in today’s world and the
source of the high-risk problems such as
angina, diabetes, arthritis, high blood
pressure, heart failure, gout, etc.
Our weight management program
addresses the physical and emotional
aspects associated with obesity.
Ayurveda offers the best treatments to
control and reduce obesity and
Udvartan is one of the best treatments
in Ayurveda for removing excess fat
accumulated in the body. All our
treatments related to reducing body fat
based on relevant and purely natural
treatments. Daily yoga, meditation, and
dosha – specific Ayurveda diet also
support weight loss, reduce stress levels
and improve health.
COMMUNITY EVENT: VILLAR DEL ARZOBISPO
99 Red Balloons!
Charity Dinner for Abandoned Animals Brings
Humans Together!
Interview with Laila Fletcher, Jenny Smith and Maria Naylor
By Richard Voller
Villar del Arzobispo is situated about 40 km from Valencia,
near stunning mountains, and has a wonderful integrated
community of both Spanish and expats. To me, it feels like
one of those magical places where the community spirit is
naturally present. In early March I went along to a charity
dinner, hosted by a new community project, VillarMutts, in
the popular bar Cervecería Lancelöt. The event was in aid of
abandoned and mistreated dogs rescued in the Villar area,
and for just a snip at 5€, I got to enjoy vegan chilli con carne,
Nepalese curry, carrot & coriander soup, fruit crumble and
rice pudding. It was a great evening, with live acoustic
music, and included the opportunity to win some amazing
raffle prizes, made and donated by our own local
community members. Who wouldn’t be thrilled to get their
hands on a hand-crocheted triceratops or a sponge-cake
puppy on a plate!
I was delighted to be able to interview the organisers of the event
and learn more about what they are doing.
Richard: “Can you tell me about the event you held recently in Villar
del Arzobispo?”
Laila: “Basically it was an evening of food, music and raffle prizes,
getting people together and raising money for animals in need in the
area of Villar del Arzobispo.”
Maria: “We've only done two events so far, but it really seems to be
bringing the community together. Even though there’s a good
community here already, it’s nice that us new expats get to be
accepted into the community.”

Insert slider
Jenny: “Yes, when I walk around the
town now, people actually say 'hallo' to
me. Last year they just ignored me!”
Maria: “It’s not about us receiving
thanks or anything like that, it’s about
the animals and bringing a community
together, to raise the money and have
fun!”
Laila: “It's about people in the area, of
all nationalities, having a good time for
a good cause – one that’s local to the
area where we all live.”
awareness. It's easy to donate 10€ to a
charity, but we want people to get
more out of what they put in!”
Jenny: “Our way is the hard way. But
it’s much better! You don't have to just
put out a charity collection box - we
want to make a good experience where
we all meet up and have a good time,
and also raise some money. People
loved the raffle prizes and they really
loved the food.”
Maria: “And it’s very rewarding!”
Maria: “Maria Lluch [vet in Casinos] told me that the
local kids used to throw stones at cats in the street,
but she goes and talks to them and explains why it’s
not ok. Lin Shepherd says the Pedralba shelter
[Naturaleza y Animales] also educates children on
animal welfare.”
Laila: “Yes they do, because we've had the shelter
come to school to give talks.”
Maria: “But I don't think it’s a Spanish problem just
because we’re in Spain. There are plenty of cases
where English owners have gone back to the UK and
just left their dogs behind.”
Richard: “This sounds like more of a
mission for you, because you all feel
very passionate about what you are
doing.”
Maria: “Yes, with dogs and actually any
animals. I can't stand animal cruelty of
any kind!”
Jenny: “I used to work for a charity in
France and I just adored doing this kind
of community work.”
Maria: “We don't have the resources to
support all charities we’d like to
ourselves, so we want to create
Laila: “Lots of people said they really
enjoyed the evening!”
Richard: “OK, I want to know how well
people are educated about animal
welfare here?”
Laila: “It’s a big area and there are a lot
of traditional rural people who might
not really be aware of the animal
welfare issues that people down in
Valencia might be. Some people have
kept animals for centuries in the same
way their grandparents kept them. It’s
unfair to say it’s a Spanish problem,
though, because in particular the
younger generations are really starting
to make a change.”
Laila: “The numbers here are quite overwhelming,
though, compared to the UK for example. In Spain it’s
culturally not the norm to neuter or spay, so there are
a lot of unwanted litters.”
Jenny: “Plus it can be expensive to neuter, so some
people can't afford it.”
Richard: “So what are the biggest problems that you
are facing?”
C O M M U N I T Y S P I R I T

Right: Laila Fletcher working at the
Charity Dinner
Laila: “It's sheer numbers! The pet food
brand Affinity have a foundation that
collects national statistics on
abandoned animals. Their most recent
study shows that over 104,000 dogs
and 33,000 cats were abandoned in
Spain in a year! For comparison, the
number of dogs abandoned in the UK
was 50,000. But Fundación Affinity can
only look at the officially registered
numbers, and I wanted to get a true
idea of the extent of the problem,
because these figures don't include
unregistered animals rescued by
private individuals. On speaking to
people, between the protectora and
other people who rescue in just the
Villar area, we’re talking about some
250 dogs abandoned each year! And
that’s not including the many that are
taken to the pound!”
Richard: “How do you find out about all
the animals which need help?”
Laila: “I rescue quite a lot of dogs
myself and find homes for them, it’s
almost unavoidable, because they find
me! And there’s a strong network
amongst animal rescuers in the area –
we all help each other out. We do
actually have a protectora (shelter)
here in Villar [Protectora de Animales
Villar del Arzobispo]. It’s quite smallscale
because it doesn't actually have a
site, so any animals rescued need to be
placed in foster homes.”
Richard: “So what is the criteria for a
foster home?”
Laila: “Taking in an animal to become
part of your family until a permanent
family is found. They live with you,
much like an adopted pet would do,
just on a temporary basis.”
Richard: “Lin Shepherd [Naturaleza y
Animales] mentioned they do a
questionnaire, and check people out to
see if they’re suitable to foster an
animal.”
Laila: “Yes, you need to have a basic
home check, as rescuers want to see
the home itself to check that it’s
secure, so the animal can't escape, and
that the property is really suitable.”
Maria: “And not every dog is right for
every person. An active dog might need
a very active family - it's about getting
the right match!”
Richard: “So when you adopt, what’s the procedure?”
Maria: “When you get your dog or cat from a
protectora, you sign a contract promising to take care
of them [and also to return them to the protectora
they came from if a change in circumstances means
you can no longer keep the animal].”
Richard: “What actually is a protectora then?”
Laila: “A protectora is an animal shelter (in contrast to
a perrera, which is a pound). A protectora won’t put a
healthy animal to sleep, and they’ll give them
whatever healthcare and medical treatment they
need, for as long as they need it. If a dog is old enough
to be neutered or spayed, that will usually be done as
well before it goes out to a home for adoption. But
puppies are too young to go through the operation, so
an adoption contract may ask you to commit to having
it done when they’re old enough.”
Richard: “So this is what you are supporting in Villar
del Arzobispo then?”
Laila: “Yes, we’re supporting the protectora in Villar,
but also there are lots of private individuals who
rescue animals as well, so we support on a case-bycase
basis. It’s to help the most desperate cases of
dogs who are rescued by people based in the Villar
area.”
Richard: “I’m curious, so if you want to adopt a
rescued dog, is it expensive?”
C O M M U N I T Y S P I R I T

It is early days for the VillarMutts project, but it
seems to have gone from strength to strength so far,
so I wanted to know what they have planned for its
future.
Maria: “I think that it’s important to remember it’s not
just us three doing the work. There are loads of
people involved in this project, and we also invite
more of you to get involved and help out whenever
you feel you can. Do tell us your ideas and suggestions
and get involved! Would you be interested in doing a
charity dog walk for example?”
You can go to the VillarMutts Facebook page to see
photos from previous fundraising events, the animals
which have been helped so far, and how their lives are
improving. Also post your suggestions or ideas in the
group.
Jenny Smith and Laila - calling out winning
raffle ticket numbers
Laila: “We’re also thinking about the possibility of a
village dog show - there could be lots of different
competitive (fun!) categories people could enter their
pets for. Would you be interested in getting involved
with an event like this?”
Maria: “You need to budget for decent
healthy food and medical care for the
rest of the dog’s life. It’s not always
cheap!”
Laila: “Some rescuers will ask for an
adoption fee, or a donation, but that
rarely covers the costs the rescuer has
spent on the animal, though it does
recoup some of them. But an adoption
fee shows, more than anything, that an
adopter is committed, and that they
have a certain level of financial security
to look after the animal.”
Maria: “I've only had my recently
adopted dog for a couple of months,
and she's already had a urine infection,
and gets through a large sack of food
every three weeks!”
Richard: “You see, so you have to
consider all these extra costs when
adopting. I think it's irresponsible to
adopt based just on your emotions, you
have to think logically about it.”
Maria: “Yes, and here in Spain there
are also rabies vaccinations, and
Leishmaniasis prevention to consider.”
Laila: “But having said that, vet bills in
the UK are much higher than Spain!”
Jenny: “Yes, it’s much cheaper here!”
Richard: “Ok, so I’m curious to know
what you do with the funds that are
raised from the events?”
Laila: “The funds raised from the first
event went to help four very desperate
dogs that were rescued here in the
local area. One was a Podenco, living
by the side of the road for more than a
month with a badly injured leg and
extremely underweight. And we've
helped three dogs rescued in a terrible
state. One was blind, and another
didn't have a single tooth in her mouth,
and when taken to the vets we
discovered that she was missing part of
her lower jaw underneath all of her fur.
The blind one had to have an eye
removed due to an infection which
hadn’t been treated. Although the
Podenco doesn't have a home yet, as
she’s still being treated for the health
problems she’s got, the other three
have now been adopted by really great
families.”
Maria: “I think a cake party would really work!”
Richard: “Well this really is good energy we’re sharing
now, and this is just with tea! So I’m sure a coffee and
cake party would be a great success!”
Maria: “We’d like to do a cake and coffee party during
the day, for people who don't want to go out too late
at night. I think Victoria sponge cake would be
delicious!”
Richard: “Doesn't Karen Bicknell make cakes?”
Laila: “Yes, she makes wonderful cakes for humans,
and for dogs too! She’s also made and donated
amazing dog-themed cakes to both of our prizedraws.”
Editor's Note
These ideas are great, and I think we’re now more
aware of just how big the problem is that we’re facing
with abandoned animals in this area, and that as a
community we can do a lot more to help. I
experienced the charity dinner and thought it was
great fun, and a super way to meet new people in the
community, as well as catching up with people I
haven't seen for a while. I must admit that it’s a nice
feeling to know that even though I didn't win a prize,
my raffle ticket has gone to a good cause!
If you want to discover more about the VillarMutts
community project, then checkout their Facebook
page and get involved in whatever way you wish.
Julia was rescued from the roadside by
Adopción de Animales Villar del
for a couple of months, and had a very
badly injured leg. As you can see from
her photos, she was also severely
underweight. We contributed to her
significant veterinary costs, her leg has
since recovered well, and she is now a
very active girl, who just loves running
about and playing with other dogs. She
has undergone treatment for
Leishmaniasis, and is now beginning to
put on weight more rapidly. She will be
The other 3 dogs were rescued by Protectora de
Animales Villar del Arzobispo:
Luna Bella is 11 - 12 years old, and her fur was so
matted that she could not even go to the toilet
properly. We pid for her bath & grooming, and she
has since been adopted locally in Llíria.
Nataly is 10 years old. Although it was clear that
she had no teeth when she was rescued it was
discovered that she was missing half of her jaw. She
received veterinary treatment, and we were able to
pay for her transport to her newly adopted family
in Malaga.
Molly is just 4 years old, but is blind due to an eye
infection that was left untreated, and which meant
she had to have one eye removed when she was
rescued. We paid for her transport to her new
family near Malaga, where she has her own dog
pushchair, so that she can safely enjoy being taken
out for walks to experience new sounds and smells
with her family.
We raised €247 at our first fundraising event in
Villar del Arzobispo in December and were able to
help these 4 dogs with their veterinary care and
getting them to their new homes. Most importantly
we were able to help them feel more comfortable
and healthy, and get them out of their situation and
into warm, loving homes. Our second fundraising
event raised €437.88, with which we will be able to
do so much more - we will keep you posted on the
dogs we help!

Zoe is 4 1/2 years old, and she's been waiting for a home since
she was just 1. She's very affectionate with other dogs, and also
with cats, even if she's never met them before. She's shy with
people she doesn't know, but she overcomes this in just a few
days, and loves the attention of being in a home. She's looking
for a home in the countryside or a village, as the city would be a
little too busy for her.
AURA
PAITING
By Richart Llover
A few years ago I really started to become more Self-
Aware and started to look inward to make more
sense of the outer world.
Going inward has helped me a lot in life to evolve to
different levels of consciousness, which I feel is the
life path of one's Soul. Anyway, I can tell you a lot
more about that when we meet.
Painting Your Aura on Canvas
This summer I am giving private lessons to
individuals who want to discover how to open up,
connect and paint their aura onto a canvas. Being
able to see your own aura is a beautiful experience
and I can teach you about the meaning of colours so
you can interpret the painting for yourself.
If you suffer from anxiety, depression or high levels
of stress, then this is an excellent way to take 'timeout'
relax, have fun and be really creative! I am sure
you'll be amazed with what you see!
For a two hour lesson, which includes paints and
canvas (45cm x 55cm), my tuition and guidance,
prices start at Euro 50 per person. Travel is included
for free within a 5 km radius from my home near
Villar del Arzobispo. So if you live further away, then
there will be an extra travel fee, or you can come to
my home, Hapi Zen, near the mountains.
For more information about your Soul and your aura,
you can read the article in the February issue of
TIPS AND ADVICE
By Grace and Ray Foster
My husband Ray and myself, as you all may
know, actually “wear 2 hats”. As well as him
being a well published poet, and myself a
Reflexologist / Psychologist, we are both
qualified Landscape Gardeners, in fact Rays
qualifications were gained under the tutelage
of the well known Cornish T.V. gardening
personality, Don Hoyle. For over 30 years Ray
had his own gardening business, both in
Cornwall and later in Scotland, planning and
drawing the designs required by the client,
then putting it into reality. I was always called
the Scottish Charlie Dimmock, although I did
always wear a bra (ha ha) … so.. to gardening
in Spain.
When we first moved here we thought we were in a
gardeners paradise and so we are, but the reality is that
it's very different from gardening in the U.K., depending,
of course, where you live. Here in the Valencia area is a
little microclimate all of its own, so what grew very well in
U.K. won't necessarily grow well here. For example,
Rhubarb, Raspberries and Gooseberries being a few that
like the really cold English winters.
Many of us have gardens, others have a terrace or just a
small balcony, but if we feel the need to feel grounded by
sinking our (green?) fingers into some earth and soil we
need to know what we can grow successfully, especially if
we've never attempted it before because of time factors.
So let's start with a little balcony. Which direction does it
face? How much hot sun in summer does it get?
Do we want only to grow flowering plants and shrubs?
Would we like to grow herbs, which can be used
medicinally? Or even fruit and vegetables? I can hear many
saying that’s impossible on a little balcony!! But we, I'll
address that at a later point, although actually, you will
discover, it's very achievable!
Today let's talk about the basics. Pots and containers are
in abundance here in Spain, both plastic and ceramic.
Ceramic pots can be very beautiful, and will add more
colour to our little balcony, but need a little more
watering than plastic pots, which don’t need it quite so
frequently, being non-porous water doesn’t evaporate as
quickly.

A FEW IDEAS TO WET YOUR
APPETITE
These will need to be clipped twice yearly. A Bay
tree will not only look good but be useful in
cooking too. Don’t let it dry out, and give its
leaves a spray often. Citrus trees will grow in
pots, Clementines, for example, will also give you
double the pleasure with the blossom than the
fruit. Lemons will fruit abundantly, although some
of the immature fruit will fall, allowing the rest to
grow larger. Limes, to grow well in pots. When
growing citrus fruits you need to remember to
remove some of the topsoils in Spring, and
replace with a good top dressing /soil, keep the
pots well watered, but again tip away any in the
dish. These little trees need to get fed regularly
with an appropriate general fertilizer. We will
discuss other larger plants in future, in the
meantime…
H
aving chosen the containers we need to make
sure they have sufficient drainage, as plants don’t
generally like their roots to sit in water
collected in the container under the pot needs to be
drained. So a good layer of stones or broken pots are
important in the bottom of our chosen vessels. There's a
huge choice of growing medium so you need to decide
which type you need, e.g. are you growing flowers, fruit, or
just green leaved plants?
Peat – Turba
Manure – Estiercol
Fertiliser – Abono
Trowel – Desplantar
Flowerpots – Macetas
You can also buy granulated peat which will help in
retaining moisture. A small balcony looks good arranged
with taller plants at the back, a vine, for example, will give
shade, flowers, and some fruit too if desired – Jasmine is a
hardy plant which will fill your patio with perfume, and
can be trained over your walls. Trees are actually useful to
grow, they can help with shade and privacy. A hedge can
be achieved with pots of Thuya ( small conifer, which is
available in Gold as well as green).
A little bit about what to grow lower down in our
arrangement. What about growing some Herbs?
Many are so good for our health, here are a few to
wet your appetite:
BASIL – ALBAHACA- calms nervousness, helps
ease stomach pain
CHIVES – CEBOLLINO – helpful in lowering blood
pressure
PARSLEY – PEREJIL – good for colic/ tummy
upsets
SAGE – SALVIA – 1 tsp in hot water for sore
throats, also mix half water and A.C.V. + mother
THYME- TOMILLO – 1oz to 1 pt hot water drink 2
fl oz 3 x daily to relieve throat/chest problem
ROSEMARY –ROMERO- Has many uses 1 oz to 1 pt
boiling water to relieve a headache with gastric
upset 2 fl oz 3 x daily – as a hair tonic, use the
infusion as a hair wash
Next time we’ll talk about how to grow these
herbs and more… Hasta Pronto

“It was a great opportunity when Richard suggested
interviewing me after I had Summited Kilimanjaro a
month before. I was so pleased to be able to tell my
personal story to the communities where I live. In Life
human beings are often seeking connection, to share,
enrich and inspire others around them. Community Spirit
really makes this happen.”
“People learn every month about people in their own
communities, events going on around them or where they
can get support for something in their everyday lives. It
bridges the gap and brings all communities together in the
rural areas of Valencia.
It's such a valuable online magazine and so many of us are
really grateful for its creation.”

gratitude
BY EMMA CLARKSON
WWW.THEFREERLANCER.COM
Beautiful people of Valencia. I want to talk to
you about spiritual alignment, and the benefits
of practicing humility and gratitude. I don’t
know exactly whether one should come first or
whether one is caused by the other. Does
becoming spiritually aligned lead you to a
place where you feel drawn to give thanks
and feel grateful, or does showing gratitude
help you on your journey to alignment? This I
don’t know. But I do know that they are
connected. I can testify to this and will go as
far as saying they saved my life.
Do you, or have you ever felt an inner
sensation that you’re in the wrong situation?
Like your life doesn’t fit?
