PURPOSE OF HUNTER’S PARK
COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION
Hunter’s Park Community Association handles the
financial and legal affairs of the subdivision. Each lot
owner is required to pay an annual maintenance fee
which is used to pay street lights; pay taxes on and
maintain the common areas, such as the swimming
pools, tennis courts, etc.; pay for security; and pay legal
expenses incurred to enforce the deed restrictions.
The Board meets every month at 6:30 p.m. in
the meeting room at the community building. Residents
are welcome to attend. Anyone wishing to
place an item on the agenda should call the HPCA
office in advance.
The Annual Meeting of Members is held on the
4th Thursday of January.
Members hold three year staggered terms and are
elected. The election process is as follows:
1) Mail in ballots will be mailed out with the
Annual Maintenance fee statements.
2) Voting in person will begin on the 1st Monday
after the Annual Meeting ending on the
following Saturday at 7pm.
HPCA Office
Office Phone: 281 463-1216
Office Hrs: 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Mon- Fri.
HPCA employs three workers to provide coverage for
the office. Every effort is made to have one of the three
employees in the office at all times. Occasionally business
of the association may require us to be out of the office
for a short period of time. If we are out of the office
when you call or if you call after hours, please leave a
message on the answering machine and your calls will
be returned as soon as possible during office hours.
an as-needed basis for additional coverage.
HARRIS COUNTY LEASH LAW
Animals that are not properly restrained pose a threat to all our residents.
While you may know your pet is friendly, an animal running
at someone who is walking by is very scary for that person. Many
children are afraid of animals and become frightened, which could
result in the child getting hurt trying to avoid the animal.
Harris County Animal Control advises, “All dogs and cats must be
kept under restraint while in the unincorporated areas of Harris
County, Texas. The custodian of a dog or cat is not authorized to
have, harbor or keep any unlicensed dog or cat nor to allow any dog
or cat to become a stray.”
Restraint is defined as “the control of a dog or cat under the following
circumstances:
1. When it is controlled by a line or leash not more than six (6) feet in
length, if the line or leash is held by a human being, who is capable
of controlling or governing the dog or cat in question
2. When it is within a fully enclosed vehicle
3. When it is on the premise of the custodian and the animal does
not have access to sidewalk or street.”
While it may be nice to have your animal out in the yard while you
work or play, it is against the law, unless the animal is properly
restrained.
Let’s all help keep our community a safe and comfortable place for
all our residents by being responsible pet owners. This will not only
protect anyone who may be walking or bicycling in the area, but also
the pet owner who could be held legally responsible or possibly sued
for failing to properly restrain their pet.
Please remember that cats fall under the same laws as dogs and
must be licensed and kept restrained when not on the premises of
the owner. We’ve been told that spreading moth balls in flower beds
might keep cats away.
DIY CAR MAINTENANCE
When was the last time you serviced your car ON YOUR OWN? Our
pretty four wheels deserve attention, too and this means more than
just a car wash. Here are a few tune-up tips you can do on your own:
1. Air filter - You need a new air filter for your car every 12 months or
12,000 miles, whichever comes first. You can pay a mechanic and give
up your car for a day or you can replace your air filter at home in about
ten minutes.
2. Windshield Wipers - You’ll need new wiper blades after about
six months or a year of use. You shouldn’t deal with the danger of
streaking while you put off an inconvenient trip to the auto shop.
3. Oil and filter - Experts say you should change your oil every 3,000
miles, but with better products and cars operating more efficiently,
you can get away with changing it every 5,000 miles. Whichever
benchmark you decide to use, you can save time and money by
handling the change yourself.
4. Battery maintenance - if you’ve had the same battery for a few
years, pop your hood every few months and take a look at the battery
to see if it needs a simple cleaning.
HOLY WEEK WORSHIP OPPORTUNITIES
Holy Week represents the last week of Jesus’ life
on earth, beginning with his triumphant entry
into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday and culminating
with his glorious resurrection from the dead the
following Sunday, Easter. This year Holy Week is
from Sunday, April 9th through Sunday, April 16th.
During this week, Cornerstone United Methodist
Church will be offering a variety of worship and
fellowship opportunities. You are invited to the
following Holy Week worship opportunities for
young and old alike planned at Cornerstone UMC:
CHILDREN’S CHOIR
The Children’s Choirs of Cornerstone United
Methodist Church will be presenting their musical
“Treasure Island” on Sunday, April 15th at the 10:45
AM service. Told with props, set and costumes,
“Treasure Island” tells the story of a group of kids
who have just arrived on Treasure Island and can’t
wait to discover the treasure that’s in store for
them. With the guidance of Captain Fisher and a
map, they start out on an adventure seeking something
more valuable than gold. Though Captain
Fisher was once a pirate searching for the riches of
this world, he now seeks God’s kingdom as a fisher
of men. Captain Fisher teaches the kids that they
should always pursue godly wisdom and eternal
riches. Join this musical adventure as the children
discover the everlasting value of storing up
treasures in heaven and continually seeking God.
YOUTH CHOIR
The Youth Choir of Cornerstone United Methodist
Church will be presenting their Spring musical
“Christ in Every Season!” on Sunday, April 29th
at the 10:45 AM service. The story of the Christian
Faith is the story of God’s love in His redemption
of humankind. The most important part of this
story is the story of Jesus Christ. The Youth Choir
will present the life of Christ in song in “Christ in
Every Season,” as it is told in the various seasons
of the Christian year. This includes Jesus’ birth, life,
teachings, miracles, suffering, death, resurrection
and His giving of the Holy Spirit. The Youth Choir
will lead this worship event in singing Anthems,
African Songs, Praise Songs, Spirituals and Hymns.
THE FIVE LOVE LANGUAGES
Cornerstone United Methodist Church will be
offering to the community a study on Gary
Chapman’s renown “The 5 Love Languages: The
Secret to Love That Lasts” starting on Tuesday,
April 10th at 7-8:15 PM. This study reveals how
different people express love in different ways
and contains the key to understanding each
other’s unique needs. What speaks love to you
may be meaningless to your spouse. Apply the
right principles, learn the right language and
soon you’ll know the profound satisfaction and
joy of being able to express your love and feel
truly loved in return. Each week the group will
view a teaching by Dr. Chapman and have the
opportunity to discuss the principles taught
both in the small group and with your spouse.
Singles are also welcome as there will be opportunity
to apply the teaching to relationships with
children, parents and other significant people in
one’s life. Classes will last for 75 minutes and a
nursery for preschool children will be available
by advanced reservation. Each participant will
need a small-group study book, which can be
purchased from the church. The cost is $10 per
book.
GARAGE SALE TIPS
• Some things you may want to consider selling are: clothing, books,
linens (especially sheet sets or towel sets), costume jewelry, curtains
and rods, cassette tapes, Christmas or other holiday items,
glassware, kitchen items and tools.
• If you haven’t used an item in a year or so, consider selling it.
If it has been two or more years, SELL IT.
• Clean items could be priced at about 30% of new retail,
but that is only a guideline.
• Old, stained (but clean) t-shirts make great rags. Bag them up
and sell a bunch at a time.
• Items with missing pieces or broken should be free -
someone may want parts.
• Display some of your more interesting items at the end
of the driveway to lure people in.
12 April 2018 | Bear Creek Community Newsletter

• Background music creates a relaxing atmosphere - pick middle
of the road, easy listening.
• If it is hot, have the kids sell cold soft drinks or have a water jug and paper
cups handy. The longer you can keep customers, the more they will buy.
• Have some “guy things” out front: an old lawn mower, some tools; set up
a guy table with jars of screws and nails, electronic parts, fishing stuff,
camping stuff, etc.
• Your sale will be more successful if you take the time and make sure everything
is clean and displayed well. During the sale, keep busy by filling in the empty
spots on your tables by rearranging your stuff.
• Have plastic grocery bags available to put sold items in; also, it’s a good idea
to have newspaper handy to wrap breakable items.
GOOD LUCK!
Mulch - If possible, buy Bagged Mulch. Bagging helps eliminate a great many pests that
die from various causes while in the bag. When you buy 'loose' mulch that is trucked
to your home, you are also buying ants, roaches, termites, etc… Spend a little more
on bagged material and save lots of future pest problems. Keep your mulch at least
4" - 6" below the top of your homes exposed foundation edge/side. This will aid in
minimizing pests in your home and allow for quick and accurate termite inspections.
Shrubs, Flowers and groundcovers - Trim all shrubs/plants at least 12" - 18"
back from your home. Do your best to create a plant free zone that is 18" - 24" wide
around your home. The exception is your lawn - it can grow up next to the slab as
long as you keep it 4" - 6" below the top of the slab. The most conducive to termite
infestation are groundcover plantings, growing high against your homes exterior or
(especially) ivy that grows on your walls.
Trees - Spray your trees at least twice annually. The spring spray eliminates overwintering
pests and fungi while preparing trees to resist the pest onslaught of summer
with residual pesticides. The fall spray also kills pests from the summer, prevents
most fungi from occurring over the winter and puts your valuable asset off to a
healthy winter's dormancy.
Lawn - Spring is the perfect time to do a fungicide treatment to stop brown patch
in its tracks along with other fungi. If your lawn is thin and weak in some areas, here
are some important fundamentals: a) lawn aeration b) fertilization c) weed control.
Most important is proper watering:
• Water once per week (unless you get a 1/2" rain or more - then do not water.)
• Water heavily (1" - 2") for total lawn coverage.
• In severe drought, water every 5th day.
• Water from 5 AM to 7 AM in the morning - NOT AT NIGHT.
• A heavy deep weekly watering makes the turf grow deeper, stronger
and more drought resistant roots.
• Less watering also saves you money!!
Nearly all children with 5p-Syndrome have
poor muscle tone when they are young. Other
characteristics may include feeding difficulties,
delays in walking, hyperactivity, scoliosis
and significant developmental delays. A small
number of children are born with serious organ
defects and other life threatening medical
conditions, although most individuals with 5pcan
anticipate a normal life expectancy. With
early and consistent educational intervention,
as well as physical and language therapy,
children with 5p-Syndrome are capable of
reaching their fullest potential and can lead
full and meaningful lives. Children born with
this very rare genetic defect will most likely
require ongoing support for life, from a team of
parents, therapists, medical and educational
professionals to help the child achieve his or
her maximum potential.
area, the B.F. Adam Golf Classic is a prime example of our trustees and
community business partners working together to raise scholarship
funds for students of Cypress-Fairbanks ISD. Our first tournament
raised $3,500 and over the past 30 years the B. F. Adam Golf Classic has
won, her battle with a rare cancerous solid tumor in 2010. Through
this battle, we became aware of the severe lack of funding available
warriors depend greatly on money raised by nonprofits like The Laurel’s
Army Foundation. For more information, please visit us at www.
SPRING CLEANING
YOUR HOME
It’s 2018. A brand new year. A chance to start
afresh, breathe in the new and make resolutions.
While you’re feeling enthused about a
year that’s new, now is the perfect time to look
around your living space and start doing some
spring cleaning.
Gifts
Are there any gifts you received over the holidays
or for your birthdays over the years that you
don’t like for whatever reason? Maybe they’re
clothes that didn’t fit or perfume you didn’t
like the smell of. Unless they hold sentimental
value for you, let them go. Sell them. They’re
taking up space.
Jewelry
If you have jewelry or lots of them, go through
them all. Which ones still speak to you and which
ones no longer do? Let go of the ones that don’t.
It will also make you appreciate the ones you’ve
decided to keep all the more.
Books
Go through your book collection. Get rid of the ones
you’re truly never going to read. Consider gifting
some of the ones you’ve read to someone else.
Books are beautiful - the feel of them, the smell
of them, being able to physically hold one, the
turning over of a page. However, give some
thought to whether there are some of your books
you’d be willing to part with and instead, access
their digital versions using an electronic reader
like a Kindle or a Fire tablet.
Magazines/CDs/DVDs
Do you still have piles of old magazines, CDs,
DVDs? Let them all go. If there are any that are
of particular value, sell them and give the rest
to charity.
Appliances/Technology
Most people have an appliance stored away
that they have never used or hardly use. A coffee
machine or smoothie maker, for instance. Any
damaged ones you’ve been telling yourself you’ll
fix one day or spare laptops or computers you
rarely ever use can all be gotten rid of.
Shoes/Clothes
This is the last thing listed but is probably the
first thing you should go through. However, you
can build up to it by doing one of the things
already listed. Unless you’re a minimalist, there
are probably clothes and shoes of yours you can
go through and say your goodbyes to. Challenge
yourself to get rid of at least a quarter of it. For
every three items you choose to keep, let go of
one item.
Spring cleaning can be freeing. You’re clearing
energy. It can make your living space feel lighter
and make you feel lighter too. Imagine how it’ll
feel once you’ve finished spring cleaning your
home, knowing that most of what you’ve chosen
to keep is what you actually want.
The New Year can also be a good time to start
planning for any work you may want done on
your home. If you live in an old building and plan
on hiring someone to do the work for you, ensure
they have the appropriate lead certification first.
KATY ISD APPROVES
INSTRUCTIONAL CALENDARS
FOR NEXT TWO YEARS
As part of the Katy Independent
School District, “Your District, Your
Voice” initiative, the community has
provided its input for the upcoming
yearly instructional calendar. The
Katy ISD Board of Trustees has
approved the following option for
the 2018-2019 academic year:
Option #1
School Begins: Wed., August 15 th
School Ends: Thursday, May 23 rd
Instructional Calendar Days: 177
Full week off for Thanksgiving
“The District is required to have
a minimum of 75,600 minutes
of instruction per school year,”
says Bonnie Holland, associate
superintendent for administration,
governance and legal affairs. “With
the options approved, Katy ISD has
enough calendar minutes to cover
two bad weather days,” added
Holland.
K-12 Insight, the external research
firm conducting the survey, found
that, out of the 22,169 participants,
65% favored option #1. The Board
also approved an instructional
calendar for 2019-2020 school
year. This calendar mirrors the
preferred components of the 2018-
19 calendar.
IRS TAX DEADLINE
People have until Tuesday, April 17, 2018, to file their 2017 returns
and pay any taxes due. The filing tax deadline is later this year due
to several factors. The usual April 15 th deadline falls on Sunday this
year, which would normally give taxpayers until at least the following
Monday. However, Emancipation Day, a Washington, D.C., holiday, is
observed on Monday, April 16 th , giving taxpayers nationwide an additional
day to file. By law, Washington holidays impact tax deadlines for
everyone in the same way federal holidays do. Taxpayers requesting
an extension will have until Monday, Oct. 15, 2018, to file.
The IRS expects more than 70 percent of taxpayers to get tax refunds
this year. Last year, nearly 112 million refunds were issued, with an
average refund of $2,895.
