“We have lived here in Cypress area since July 2013. We like living in this
area because it’s where we built our first home and we have family nearby.
Also because everything is nearby and has had many new developments
like Boardwalk, beautiful parks, great schools, restaurants, stores, etc. The
area means a lot to us because we come to see how communities come
together to help and support neighbors in times of need. We have also
meet great neighbors that have become great friends.”
Long Awaited Spring
Their favorite spring time tradition as a family is picking out their
cowboy and cowgirl wear for Rodeo Day, and then head down to NRG
to enjoy the Rodeo food and concerts. Of course, the kids have a blast
at the carnival!
The Easter Bunny is Coming to Town: “For Easter each year as a family,
we like to go to brunch together, followed by Easter church service
and we like to host a BBQ with close friends and family. Our Easter
tradition is an Easter egg hunt for kids, we always make baskets for our
kids filled with their favorite goodies, and bake and decorate an Easter
theme cake.”
And he’s good to me: The kids’ Easter baskets and usually filled with
toys, candies, shirts and each kid’s favorite goodies based on their
favorite character or hobby.
What’s it all about: To this family, the true meaning of Easter is the
“religious celebration celebrating the resurrection of Jesus. Also a time
to get together with close family and friends and spend quality time
together.”
Heart to Heart
“One of our biggest challenges was
learning that not everyone is as
understanding towards special needs
and some lack knowledge to Autism.
We went from having such hard times
making a grocery trip or taking my kids
to a playground because some would
look at my son as their definition of
normal and due to his sensory overload
moments adults would stare or make
rude comments when he would stim
or have a moment. Children around
him always seem to be much more
understanding than adults, but we have
come such a long way from letting that
turn into fear to be out in public to not
letting that stop us and my children
from enjoying life and all the beautiful
things life has for them to explore. Now
we enjoy the outdoors more, explore
new places and travel more.”

People have until Tuesday, April 17, 2018, to file their 2017 returns and pay any taxes due.
The filing tax deadline is later this year due to several factors. The usual April 15 th deadline
falls on Sunday this year, which would normally give taxpayers until at least the following
Monday. However, Emancipation Day, a Washington, D.C., holiday, is observed on Monday,
April 16 th , giving taxpayers nationwide an additional day to file. By law, Washington holidays
impact tax deadlines for everyone in the same way federal holidays do. Taxpayers requesting
an extension will have until Monday, Oct. 15, 2018, to file. The IRS expects more than 70
percent of taxpayers to get tax refunds this year. Last year, nearly 112 million refunds were
issued, with an average refund of $2,895.

St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic School 7 th and 8 th grade students competed
in the annual St. Agnes Middle School Math Competition on Saturday,
February 24 th . 27 teams from 15 area Catholic schools solved math and
reasoning puzzles. There was also a building competition to create a
load bearing bridge over a 3-foot span! SEASCS Team A placed 5 th in the
activity competition: Emma Nguyen, Sani Jones, Dylan Sandrock, Lucile
Mauvoisin, Issa Baba and Toby Vu. SEASCS Team B placed 7 th in the team
competition and 6 th in the activity portion: Makynzie Kitzmann, Chris Ngo,
Kati Rzasnicki, Catherine Benavides, Anh Thy Nguyen and Michael Staron.
Lexie Robertson practiced and served as an alternate. The combined team
scores brought home the 2 nd place over all award! WAY TO GO PHINS!

season. Go patriots! Wishing both our MS and Varsity track and field teams

This year due to Hurricane Harvey, Covenant Academy’s annual upper

Celebrating 22 years! Online registration is now open for summer soccer
camps 2018! Sports Quest is a non-profit soccer training organization,
dedicated to sharing Biblical truth to reach, teach & encourage next
generation leaders through soccer. Sports Quest summer camps provide
a fun, safe and educational soccer environment for boys and girls aged

CLUB TRACK TEAM REGISTRATION FOR
MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETES
The Northwest Flyers Track Club is now registering all middle and
high school athletes who wish to join for the 2018 season. The team is
celebrating its 31 st anniversary year and is a member of USA Track & Field.
A full program of “track” events such as sprints, hurdles, middle distance,
distance and relays and “field” events such as long jump, triple jump, high
jump, pole vault, discus, shot put and javelin is offered. It is an excellent
“off-season” program for young athletes who currently compete on their
middle school or high school track teams.
An orientation session for school athletes will be held at 7 PM on April 3 rd
and on May 1 st at Bleyl Middle School, 10800 Mills Rd., Houston, TX 77070.

AHFC Royals will make their inaugural season this summer 2018 (May-

its annual Butterfly Family Festival. This year we are adding new events!
Beginning at 9 AM we will host multiple vendors along with our silent
auction. We’ve added a train ride, popcorn, cupcake decorating and an
inflatable basketball game.
Yes we will have your favorites: delicious BBQ lunch, cookies, a raffle,
children’s carnival games, cake walk, book walk, face painting, music,

10:45 AM service. The story of the Christian Faith is the story of God’s love
in His redemption of humankind. The most important part of this story
is the story of Jesus Christ. The Youth Choir will present the life of Christ
in song in “Christ in Every Season,” as it is told in the various seasons of
the Christian year. This includes Jesus’ birth, life, teachings, miracles,
suffering, death, resurrection and His giving of the Holy Spirit. The Youth
Choir will lead this worship event in singing Anthems, African Songs,
Praise Songs, Spirituals and Hymns.
THE FIVE LOVE LANGUAGES
Cornerstone United Methodist Church will be offering to the community
a study on Gary Chapman’s renown “The 5 Love Languages: The Secret to
Love That Lasts” starting on Tuesday, April 10 th at 7-8:15 PM. This study
reveals how different people express love in different ways and contains
the key to understanding each other’s unique needs. What speaks love to
you may be meaningless to your spouse. Apply the right principles, learn
the right language and soon you’ll know the profound satisfaction and joy
of being able to express your love and feel truly loved in return. Each week
the group will view a teaching by Dr. Chapman and have the opportunity
to discuss the principles taught both in the small group and with your
spouse. Singles are also welcome as there will be opportunity to apply
the teaching to relationships with children, parents and other significant
people in one’s life. Classes will last for 75 minutes and a nursery for
preschool children will be available by advanced reservation. Each
participant will need a small-group study book, which can be purchased
from the church. The cost is $10 per book.

ST. ELIZABETH ANN SETON SCHOLA CANTORUM
Do you want your children to become lifelong servants of the Church?
Singing in a children’s choir is a great way to help that. The St. Elizabeth
Ann Seton Schola Cantorum is currently accepting children Grades 4-12
for its after-school choir program. The choir is responsible for enriching
the Mass on 10:30 on Sundays and rehearses every Wednesday from
3:45-5 PM. Unique in the area, the choir focuses on singing music from
the rich Catholic tradition, including chant and polyphony, as well as the
finest modern church music. Time is devoted to building the children’s
skills of music reading, vocal technique, thinking about the words and
the structure and meaning of the Mass. Service hours are available for

Morning Bible Study will start a thirteen session study “Meeting Jesus.”
Using Leighton Ford’s study guide “Meeting Jesus,” we will be taking a
fresh look at the Son of God. Using the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and
John, we will be examining our relationship with Jesus and gain a better
understanding of His relevance for us in today’s world. There is no cost for

English Gateway is a program designed to teach conversational
English. The vision and desire of English Gateway is to assist
international families in learning and improving English skills to
help them live and be successful here in the United States. We offer
6 different levels and have open registration throughout the CFISD

Vendors Needed for Craft Shows
CALLING ALL VENDORS!
The 2 nd Annual Mother’s Day Market & Car Show presented by Cypress
Springs FFA Booster Club will be held on Saturday, April 21, 2018
between 9 AM-5 PM & Sunday, April 22, 2018 between 10 AM-4 PM. This
event will be advertised in various media outlets. We are also working
on entertainment and radio spots to generate business and excitement
this year. Indoor booths are $110 and outdoor booths are $100. All
proceeds will benefit the Cypress Springs FFA students in attending
state convention, competitions and creating scholarships for graduating
seniors. The event is held at the CFISD Exhibit Center at 11206 Telge Road,

SPRING FESTIVAL ON APRIL 28 TH -29 TH
Get ready for family fun and entertainment for all ages! Christ the
Redeemer Catholic Church will host its 33 rd Annual Spring Festival on
April 28 th -29 th . The event, a major fundraiser for the parish, provides the
community with fun and fellowship for the whole weekend.
On the CtR church grounds, the community and parishioners will enjoy
several big-top tents, a two-story obstacle course and lots of food. Festival
activities include the cake raffle, Bingo, Sweet Shop, Crafts, Flea Market,
Plant Booth, Coke Ring Toss and the very popular expanding food court.
For the kids, they have several inflatables to play on, confetti egg games,
face painting and marshmallow shooters. A big draw is the great food in a
large tent with tons of options including egg rolls, funnel cakes, hot dogs,
jambalaya, barbecue sandwiches or barbecue stuffed potatoes, snocones,
cotton candy and popcorn. The live and silent auctions are also great fun
for the community. Some auction items in the past have included trips,
patio furniture, iPads, a complete playground installed in your yard,
themed baskets and so much more! Don’t forget the live music, clown and
magic shows for this two-day extravaganza!
Make sure to mark your calendar for Saturday, April 28 th , 6-11 PM and
Sunday, April 29 th , 12-7 PM. Also, attendees are invited to stay connected

SHIELD BEARER RUNNING FOR HEARTS
5K FAMILY FUN RUN AND WALK
The Shield Bearer Running for Hearts 5K Family Fun
Run and Walk will take place on April 7, 2018, 7-11 AM,
at Windwood Church at 10555 Spring Cypress Road in
Houston, Texas. This family friendly event will feature a
5K timed, trail style run, a 1-mile family walk, games for
the kids, t-shirts, food, prizes and lots of fun for all ages.
Race registration is $25 for adults (ages 14 and up) and
$10 for children (ages 13 and under) before March 20,
2018. Registration, sponsorship, vendor, fundraising and

Proceeds for the event will fund services and programs
at Shield Bearer, a Houston based 501c3 nonprofit
counseling and community resource center that provides
services on a sliding scale. Shield Bearer has five locations

trafficking, domestic violence, crime, abuse, war and

CAMP CORNERSTONE IS THE
PLACE TO BE THIS SUMMER
for ages 2 through completion of 4 th grade!
Camp Cornerstone is a week-long camp sponsored by Cornerstone United
Methodist Church and is for children ages 2 through the completion of
4 th grade. Children must be 2 by June 1, 2018. Camp hours are 9:30 AM-1
PM. There are 3 sessions throughout the summer and you are invited to
participate in any or all!
Session I: “Totally Texas” is June 18 th -22 nd , Session II: “Artistic Creations”
is July 16 th -20 th , Session III: “Fairy Tale Adventures” is August 6 th -10 th . The
cost per camp per child is $120. You may pay $60 now and the remaining
$60 on the first day of camp. Registration forms are online or in the
preschool office. To download a form from the Cornerstone website, go to
www.cornerstoneumc.org and click on “preschool.” You will see a tab for
Camp Cornerstone. You can print the form and have it filled out before you
arrive, saving yourself time!
Before each camp session begins, you will hear from your child’s teacher
so you can learn more about the camp and she will answer any questions

backpack and a lunch as they enjoy each other and the special things they
will do during the week. We look forward to having your child at camp this

This program is held on the fourth Saturday of each month at the Edith L.

Mulch - If possible, buy Bagged Mulch. Bagging helps eliminate
a great many pests that die from various causes while in the bag.
When you buy ‘loose’ mulch that is trucked to your home, you
are also buying ants, roaches, termites, etc… Spend a little more
on bagged material and save lots of future pest problems. Keep
your mulch at least 4” - 6” below the top of your homes exposed
foundation edge/side. This will aid in minimizing pests in your
home and allow for quick and accurate termite inspections.
Shrubs, Flowers and groundcovers - Trim all shrubs/plants at
least 12” - 18” back from your home. Do your best to create a plant
free zone that is 18” - 24” wide around your home. The exception
is your lawn - it can grow up next to the slab as long as you keep
it 4” - 6” below the top of the slab. The most conducive to termite
infestation are groundcover plantings, growing high against your
homes exterior or (especially) ivy that grows on your walls.
Trees - Spray your trees at least twice annually. The spring spray
eliminates overwintering pests and fungi while preparing trees to
resist the pest onslaught of summer with residual pesticides. The
fall spray also kills pests from the summer, prevents most fungi
from occurring over the winter and puts your valuable asset off to a
healthy winter’s dormancy.
Lawn - Spring is the perfect time to do a fungicide treatment to stop
brown patch in its tracks along with other fungi. If your lawn is thin
and weak in some areas, here are some important fundamentals: a)
lawn aeration b) fertilization c) weed control.
Most important is proper watering:
• Water once per week (unless you get a 1/2” rain or more - then do
not water.)
• Water heavily (1” - 2”) for total lawn coverage.
• In severe drought, water every 5 th day.
• Water from 5 AM to 7 AM in the morning - NOT AT NIGHT.
• A heavy deep weekly watering makes the turf grow deeper,
stronger and more drought resistant roots.
• Less watering also saves you money!!

Caramel Pecan Pie
INGREDIENTS:
1 (9 inch) unbaked pie crust
36 individually wrapped caramels, unwrapped
1/4 cup butter
1/4 cup milk
3/4 cup white sugar
3 eggs
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 cup pecan halves
DIRECTIONS:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C.) In a saucepan over low heat, combine
caramels, butter and milk. Cook, stirring frequently, until smooth. Remove from heat and
set aside.
In a large bowl, combine sugar, eggs, vanilla and salt. Gradually mix in the melted caramel
mixture. Stir in pecans. Pour filling into unbaked pie crust.
Bake in the preheated oven for 45 to 50 minutes or until pastry is golden brown. Allow to
cool until filling is firm.
