Two group members met with Bo at the Young Achievers and we tried to find
information online, but there wasn’t much, so a lot of the information for this project
came from that meeting with Bo. Attached is all of the projects we have created for the
Young Achievers Extended Learning Time program. All projects we have are either
directed completely towards ELT or to the school itself.

Young Achievers Math and Science Pilot School
Extended Learning Time
Mattapan, Massachusetts - March 20, 2017 - The Young Achievers Math and Science School
is a kindergarten through eighth grade pilot school that is looking into reapplying for Extended
Learning Time.
Extended Learning Time creates a longer school schedule. Adding additional hours to the
school day. At Young Achievers a regular six-and-a-half-hour day becomes a seven hour and
45 minute long day.
By adding Extended Learning Time teachers have added professional development time,
students have curriculum connected field learning experiences, school effectively closes
opportunity gaps that often impact the achievement gap, and also school culture is enhanced
through offering the students the opportunity to interact with a diverse range of engaging
experiences and adults.
Every three years, each school that has previously had Extended Learning Time needs to
reapply. Applicants that re-apply will establish a school schedule, that is required for all
students, that adds a substantial amount of additional hours to the school day, week and/or year
so that they offer at least 300 hours above the state minimum requirements.
By adding the extra time to the school day, it becomes “a big help for working families,” says
Young Achievers Executive Director, Bo Hoppin.
Interested in a longer school day that benefits not only each student but also the faculty and
family members? Extended Learning Time (ELT) creates a longer school schedule that is
required for all students and faculty. The added time makes a regular six and a half hour school
day become a seven hour and forty five minute long day.
By adding Extended Learning Time it benefits students by giving students more time to catch up
on assignments, gives students more time to with teachers and classmates, and students are
able to leave the classroom and go on field trips with classmates and teachers. Having
Extended Learning Time also helps teachers and staff at the school. With the extended time
teachers are given more time to prepare for their classes, and allows to teachers to have more
teachers meetings to discuss content being taught and other things that help teachers become
better.
Pitch Email:
March 29, 2017
Mr. Russell Holmes
State Representative
24 Beacon St.
Room 254
Boston, MA 02133
Dear Russell Holmes:
The Young Achievers Math and Science School is a kindergarten through eighth grade pilot school that is
reapplying for Extended Learning Time to lengthen the school day.
Extended ours to the school day and creates a longer school schedule that is required for all students and
faculty. At Young Achievers, a regular six-and-a-half-hour day is lengthened to seven hours and 45 minutes.
Every three years, each school that has previously had Extended Learning Time needs to reapply. Applicants
that reapply establish a school schedule, that is required for all students that adds a substantial number of
additional hours to the school day, week and/or year so that the school offers at least 300 hours above the
state minimum requirements.
By adding Extended Learning Time, teachers have added professional development time, students have
curriculum connected field learning experiences, school effectively closes opportunity gaps that often impact
the achievement gap, and also school culture is enhanced through offering students the opportunity to
interact with a diverse range of engaging experiences and adults.
The Extended Learning Time program is only possible with a grant of $450,000. Currently, the City of Boston
is in need of this grant to continue Extended Learning Time. If this grant is not accepted, each school that is
currently enrolled in Extended Learning Time, including Young Achievers, will go back to normal length school
days and students will not be given some of the experience and learning opportunities.
Our school is looking for a spokesperson to help us gain awareness of the needed grant for Extended
Learning Time. If you are willing to help us succeed with our reapplication for Extended Learning Time please
let us know.
We look forward to hearing back from you.
Sincerely,
Bo Hoppin | Executive Director
Young Achievers Math and Science Pilot School
OBJECTIVES AND GOALS:
The Young Achievers Math and Science Pilot School does not currently have any social media.
After discussing with our client, we decided to make a mock Facebook page about posts that
would be shared with students, teachers, and parents about reminders, events coming up, and
other informative posts. The Facebook page will also show posts from people who have visited
the school and have tagged them in posts.
Here is an example of what the Young Achievers Math and Science Pilot School Facebook
page would look like:

INSPIRATION:
Here are some examples of how other similar pilot schools in Boston are effectively using their
social media sites. Having a social media site would be a way to help the Young Achievers staff
see the possibilities and how it can help them reach the community, share their messages and
achievements, and create engagement.
Facebook Example: Lilla G. Frederick Pilot Middle School

Twitter Example: Dennis C. Haley Pilot School

Conclusion
The goal for the project was to let people know about Young Achievers Math and
Science Pilot School and the benefits of Extending Learning time. The project will be
beneficial to Bo Hoppin and Young Achievers because it can get Young Achievers’
message out to people and allow the community to learn more about Extended
Learning Time.We really enjoyed working with the Young Achievers school this
semester and we would like to personally thank Young Achievers and Mr. Bo Hoppin for
letting us create some projects that may help spread the word about ELT and YA.
