Amesbury’s Youth Services
Director Kathy Crowley provided
details about the program, adding,
Triton’s Budget Fight Is On
Amesbury Innovation Center Expands to Gloucester
By Stewart Lytle, Reporter
–––––––––––––––––
From left, Mark Friery and Bob O’Brien
REGIONAL – You know
you’re in Gloucester when you
see giant windmills on top of a
hill above the highway. They are
part of the Blackburn Industrial
Park, which once was home to
Gloucester Engineering, the city’s
largest non-marine employer.
Starting in May, the site will
become the second location for an
innovative concept that converts
under-utilized commercial
properties into multi-tenant
CI Works, which proved its
business model in Amesbury, is
partnering with Equity Industrial
Investors, the owner of the
Gloucester industrial park, to
create a home for up to 50 small
manufacturing companies that
may create 250 jobs.
“We knew we had a good
concept,” said CI Works Executive
Vice President and CFO Mark
Friery. “In Amesbury in a larger
facility we have proven it works.
Triton Regional High School
TRITON – In his 13 years
overseeing the budget for the
Triton Regional School District,
Superintendent Brian Forget said
he has never seen a budget like
this.
During his first dozen years
at Triton, Forget was the
deputy superintendent with
responsibility over the district’s
finances. In those years, he said
“we had increases. We needed to
make adjustments.” But those
the many programs offered last
summer.” New this year will be
many STEAM programs such
as STEM Beginnings “on the
Move”, Amazing 4 in 1 robot,
Arcade Electronics Galore, Right
brain Curriculum with “Shark
Tank- Business Sharks,” and
Expert Architects, Crazy 3d
Creatures, Top Secret Science
and many more. Other new
programs will be Kid’s Yoga and
stand-up paddleboard, Disc Golf
The company’s plan is to
circumnavigate Boston, where
rents are high, with centers like in
Amesbury and now in Gloucester
that lease affordable and flexible
space to small businesses and
manufacturers that can thrive in
shared spaces.
“CI Works offers a unique
approach different from
traditional real estate options,”
the company’s business plan
states.
Instead of leasing to a tenant as
much space for as much money
as possible, CI Works allows each
of its tenant companies to utilize
only the space they need. This
limits their costs while they are
growing.
The tenant companies at CI
Works are also encouraged to work
with one other collaborately. They
share services and equipment,
and under the watchful eye of CI
Works President Bob O’Brien and
Friery, they buy from each other
and they exchange expertise,
contacts and experience with the
other companies.
There are many buildings
and Ultimate Frisbee, Teen Sports
Conditioning, Street Hockey,
Boost Outdoor Challenge and
Delicious Desserts. Registration
is now open to residents and non
residents (for a small charge).
New for this year, the Tadpole
program will start at age 3 to 5
year olds and will offer 4, one week
sessions, Monday through Friday,
from 9am to 1:00. It is located
under the red shade structure at
the Town Park and will include
arts and crafts, playground games,
fun cooperative games, sports,
water play in the splash pad, Friday
entertainment with animal shows,
magicians, walking field trips and
more. The Tadpole Park Program
is designed to give preschoolers
a chance to develop social skills,
work on coordination and have
fun all at the same time.
The Youth Park Program,
located at the Town Park on Friend
St., serves 6-11 year olds. This
Patriots of the Past at the Museum of Old Newbury
The Town Common Courtesy Photo
NEWBURYPORT - Although many flock to
Lexington and Concord for historical reenactments
on Patriot’s Day, this year, north shore residents won’t
have to travel so far. On Monday, April 16 from
1:00-3:00pm, the Museum of Old Newbury will
host a Patriot’s Day celebration featuring hands-on
activities and demonstrations with historical reenactors
representing nearly 100 years of American history.
Patriots of the Past offers opportunities to meet a
minute man, practice marching to a Civil War drum,
and learn about Newburyport’s involvement in the
American Revolution and Civil War.
Local reenactors will help to bring the stories past
patriots to life for the event. Featured reenactors include Mike Welch of West Newbury and Todd
McGrath of Amesbury. Welch has been reenacting for over ten years and will portray a colonial
militiaman. With an authentic costume and weaponry representing the Revolutionary era, Welch offers
a glimpse of a soldier’s life during the struggle for American independence. Highlighting the American
Civil War, McGrath will portray a drummer from the 17th Massachusetts, Company D. Visitors can
learn about the responsibilities of Civil War drummers, and the many dangers that came with this
important position. Young visitors will enjoy learning to march to the beat of the drum and exploring
a Civil War tent and campsite.
Patriots of the Past is a free event, sponsored in part by a grant from the Institution for Savings.
The event will take place outdoors at the Museum of Old Newbury, located at 98 High Street in
Newburyport.
The Museum of Old Newbury preserves and interprets the history of “Old Newbury” which includes
Newbury, Newburyport, and West Newbury from pre-settlement to the present.
The Museum carries out its mission through the preservation and administration of the Cushing House, the Perkins Engraving Plant, and
other historic structures on its High Street campus and furthers its purpose through lectures, exhibitions, educational programs, publications,
and research.
enrollment will be limited to 50.
The Summer Environmental
Program located at Camp Kent
Nature Center serves approx.
300 youth in grades 1-7 each
year and offers six, one week
sessions, running 9-3, Monday
through Thursday. Participants
will be in small groups with their
peers and will participate in a
variety of environmental science,
outdoor skills, and adventure
learning activities. Each week for
grades 3-7 we will offer a hike up
Powwow Hill with a free cookout,
water view and Eagle watching, a
paddle day to the beach in kayaks,
dories and canoes; and weekly
visits from wildlife specialists. In
addition, programming includes
a low elements challenge course,
archery, kayaking, fire making for
some ages, Dutch oven cooking
and GPS navigation. Grades 1
and 2 will be offered ponding
Amesbury Innovation Center Expands to Gloucester
Continued from page 1
in Massachusetts that were
constructed at great expense and
with extensive infrastructure
that remain unoccupied or
underutilized, the company said.
These buildings could benefit
small manufacturing businesses
if leased at reasonable rates for
appropriate sized footprints.
O’Brien and Friery began
testing the concept as the Clean
Tech Center in Newburyport’s
industrial park. When they needed
a larger building, Amesbury
Mayor Ken Gray invited them to
move to several, well-maintained
old mill buildings the defense
contractor ARC Technologies
owns.
Today, CI Works, operating
in 140,000 square feet, is
landlord and chief nurturer of
64 companies that lease space
in the old ARC buildings. Those
companies employ 208 workers.
“This is a tremendous
opportunity for the city (of
Gloucester) to be able to get
some great jobs in there,” said
Tom Gillett, executive director of
the city’s Economic Development
and Industrial Corp. “It allows
smaller companies the chance to
grow and expand. This is one you
have to feel good about.”
The site at the base of the giant
windmills was home for 50 years
to Gloucester Engineering, where
about 400 employees worked out
Continued from page 1
care premiums.
The state’s funding for
regional school districts, Forget
said, does not recognize the true
costs of special education and
health care.
Being a regional school
district, Triton must secure the
approval of at least two of its
three towns – Newbury, Rowley
and Salisbury. Each town is
being asked to say yes to raising
homeowners’ property taxes.
Each town has voted to bring
the issue to an election and at its
Town Meetings this spring.
Two towns are also exploring
the option of approving a
smaller amount than their
apportionment is. But that is
the equivalent of voting no and
would send the issue back to
the school committee to cut the
budget.
Forget said, the backup plan,
or Plan B, would be decided
by the school committee at its
May meeting. He expects it
would require cutting 20 staff
members and eliminating some
programs.
of a163,000-square-foot building.
In 2016, the new owner of the
company, Davis-Standard plastics
machinery, moved the last 30
production jobs to Connecticut.
Equity Industrial Partners
acquired the largely empty site as
part of a real estate portfolio and
was having trouble finding one
large tenant to lease the building.
That’s when U.S. Rep. Seth
Moulton, D-Salem, introduced
Equity to CI Works. Gillett
and Equity visited CI Works in
Amesbury and were impressed.
O’Brien said he is equally
impressed with the Blackburn
Industrial site. The building has
high ceilings, electricity on every
pole and three cranes across the
top of the building that move
around the building and out
the doors. It also has tall doors,
which will allow large trucks and
equipment to come in and out.
Friery said the Gloucester
Engineering building has a
better lay out than the Amesbury
buildings and “is built like a
fortress.” It has more leasable
space for companies, he said.
Gloucester Mayor Sefatia
Romeo Theken said, “The
expansion of CI Works to
Gloucester is an important
opportunity for the city, local
business and the North Shore
region. The City of Gloucester
welcomes CI Works’ unique
approach and its proven record
Triton’s Budget Fight Is On
The Boards of Selectmen in
each of the towns approved
sending the issue to an override
vote. But Forget said he believes
the town leadership is only
“cautiously optimistic” that
the override will pass the Town
Meetings and at the ballot box.
“It has been a very contentious
spring,” Forget said. “We are
one vote away from 35 students
in a classroom.”
Salisbury, which is being asked
to approve an $800,000 increase
to $11.9 million, will vote on
May 8. Its Town Meeting is
May 14.
Rowley is putting an increase
of $532,640 before the Town
Meeting April 30. It will be on
the ballot May 8.
Newbury will ask its residents
to approve an override of
$359,790 at its Town Meeting
on April 24 and at the ballot
box on May 8.
Expect it to be a hotly
contested decision. Groups
of parents in each town are
already organizing. They are
lobbying against cutting staff
and programs in the schools.
of attracting new, innovative
businesses and creating a diverse
range of job opportunities.”
O’Brien said he is talking with
a dozen companies about moving
to the site. One is Blackburn
Energy (no relation to the site)
that has developed a creative way
of harvesting electricity from 18-
wheel trucks. With Blackburn’s
system, truck drivers no longer
have to burn fuel to idle so they
can power up their cabs.
A sheet metal firm in Beverly
Target industries for CI Works
Gloucester include marinerelated
other regional school districts.
Some have been working with
approved budgets for as much
as two years, Forget said.
Should Triton have two towns
reject the increases, the school
committee will meet May 16
to draft a new budget. It has 30
days to submit a new budget to
the towns.
Then the towns have 45 days
to approve the new budget or let
it automatically be approved by
not voting.
If the district gets to July 1,
the beginning of the new budget
year, without an approved
budget, the state can step in and
have the towns fund the district
on a month-by-month. The
district would have to operate
on 1/12th of its current budget
with probably a 2.5 percent
increase for inflation.
LECTURE ON HAWK WATCHING
Plum Island is one of the most significant
spring hawk watching sites on the east
coast. Unlike during fall migration, when
hawks fly high along ridges from thermal
to thermal, we see hundreds of hawks
flying north along the coast, often less
than 20 feet above the ground! During the
lecture, learn how to identify hawks and
discuss the similarities and differences in
species composition and flight strategies.
Following is a free field trip to Plum
Island, where we’ll observe and put into
practice our hawk identification skills.
Health & Wellness
By J. Peter St. Clair, DMD
Changing our behavior, habits,
attitude, or any aspect of our
lives can be a difficult thing to
do. I am not writing as an expert
on this subject as I have the
same struggles as everyone else
with change. However, repeated
awareness of changes we want to
make is one strategy to move us
closer to making that change.
A good example is Mary, a
patient of mine. Mary is an
adult who has had issues with
decay (bacterial disease that
breaks down tooth structure),
dental erosion (chemical
breakdown of tooth structure),
and gum recession (loss of the
supporting structures of the
teeth). When people like Mary
present with these problems, we
dentists present treatment to
“fix” the problems. However, the
reasons “WHY” these issues are
occurring are just as important,
if not more so, than the “fixes”
we propose.
Mary drinks diet soda. In fact,
Mary doesn’t just drink diet soda;
she has a diet soda by her side
all day long. At a recent event I
If your cable bill keeps
climbing, you don’t have to give
up your television. There is a way
to keep watching your shows and
movies at a fraction of the cost.
It’s called cord cutting.
“Cord cutting” means that you
can dump your cable company,
replace it with a small indoor
HDTV antenna and a streaming
device, and sign up for individual
services for much less than you’re
paying now.
Brighter Smiles...
The Common Denominator
saw Mary sitting and listening
intently to the presentation.
At her side was her diet soda.
Every few minutes Mary would
unscrew the diet soda cap and
take a swig.
The three main dental issues
Mary has: decay, erosion, and
recession, have many different
etiologies. One common
denominator is pH, which is a
scale used to describe the acidity
or alkalinity of solutions or
environments. The lower the
pH the more acidic the solution
or environment is. In order for
any of the three disease processes
described above to occur, the pH
of the oral environment has to
be acidic.
While there are many reasons
the pH of the oral environment
can be acidic, such as medications
or disease, dietary factors play a
significant role. A pH lower than
5.5 in the oral cavity puts you
at risk for dental disease. Most
tap water, for example, has a pH
of 7. The average diet soda has
a pH of 3.28. Stomach acid has
a pH between 1-2. Diet soda is
very acidic.
Having a diet soda with a
meal on occasion is most likely
not a problem. Typically, after
consumption of an acidic
beverage, your saliva will
neutralize (make your mouth
more alkaline and less acidic)
within about a half hour. That is
Senior Scene
Cut Cable, Save Money
There are new streaming
devices every day: Roku, the
Roku stick, Amazon Fire stick
and more. Roku connects to
your TV with an HDMI cable
($10) and runs on Wi-Fi from
your Internet. The stick plugs
right into your TV. The little
device will cost you from $30 to
$100, depending on which one
you select.
With Roku alone you can
access thousands of channels,
many of them free. Some will
cost you a few dollars a month.
Before you sign up for any
channels, give yourself a month
of sampling what you can get on
your device for free.
If you’re ready to venture out
and add channels, consider
why you may have heard that you
should wait at least a half hour
before brushing your teeth after
meals. The problem with Mary
sipping the diet coke all day long
is that the pH of her mouth is
always acidic. This creates a very
dangerous environment.
Quieter drills, new materials
and technologies will not solve
these problems. While etiologies
such as medications that can
cause dry mouth and a very
acidic environment are difficult
enough to manage, behavioral
issues are often not discussed in
enough detail, or at all, because
they can be more difficult to
manage.
Avoidable dental problems are
the last thing a patient wants to
hear about and a dentist wants to
see. In addition, we as providers
need to adopt a more preventive
approach to the conditions I
discussed in this column. Next
week I will introduce you to one
way I am currently studying.
Dr. St. Clair maintains a
health-centered family dentistry.
Netflix for its thousands of
movies, as well as full seasons
of TV shows, although they’re
a year late. Hulu, on the other
hand, airs many network shows
the next day or week. If you’re
an Amazon Prime customer,
look through its movie and TV
offerings for no additional cost,
or access premium channels
(such as HBO and Showtime) at
a discount.
That’s where you need to
beware. Make your choices
carefully, or you run the risk of
signing up for so many that it
equals the cable bill you just got
rid of. Take it one step at a time.
Your best bet to start: a Roku
