Self-defense class prepares
attendees for the worst
Margaret Tazioli
Freelance Reporter
No woman should be
without the basic knowledge
of self-defense, the
movie character Gracie
Hart from “Miss Congeniality”
said.
“If all else fails, go for the
four most sensitive areas of
the body. Just remember to
SING: Solar plexus, instep,
nose, groin,” Hart said as
she demonstrated stepping
on and elbowing her partner
in those four areas.
However, the self-defense
specialist Michael
Theriault, of The Brave
Way, said the infamous
SING method really is ineffective
in practical terms.
Consider an 8-year-old
being assaulted by a grown
man; she wouldn’t be tall
enough to even reach his
nose, he said.
During The Brave Way’s
self defense class at the
West Ridge Center, 636
Ridge Road, Highland
Park, on Saturday, April 7,
Theriault taught a group of
nine community members
finger locks, ear locks and
some simple strikes that
he says are very effective
techniques for people of
any size and in almost any
situation.
One of the participants,
Natalie Sorensen, said, “I
lived in Chicago and some
stuff went down that made
me feel uncomfortable,
so I think it’s important to
be safe because you never
know.”
The two hours were
filled with kicks and giggles
while the participants
practiced thwarting a theoretical
attacker.
Charity Johns and Alethea
Hoyte-Johns, a mother-daughter
duo, practiced
the finger twists and tossing
each other to the floor,
laughing the whole time.
Theriault, a technology
professional by trade and
former chief operating officer,
has a passion for
martial arts and has been
teaching people to defend
themselves for more than
17 years.
He and his friend were
training in martial arts
nearly two decades ago
when they decided to develop
a simple program for
their daughters and wives.
Then Theriault realized
he could make a business
out of it.
Soon enough, he developed
a program for police
officers and taught a
THE GLENCOE ANCHOR
Despite erosion at
neighboring beaches,
Glencoe Beach ready for
season
It’s full steam ahead for
Glencoe Beach this season.
As beach season approaches,
the Glencoe
Park District, which manages
the Glencoe Beach,
said things are looking
good, in terms of water
levels and erosion.
“The beach is going
to open as normal,” said
Bobby Collins, Glencoe
Park District’s director of
recreation and facilities.
“We’ve been monitoring
it a lot and going down
there a lot. There have
been no major changes in
the last three months.”
Opening day is planned
for May 26 at Glencoe
Beach and it will close
for the season over Labor
Day Weekend.
Recent reports have
shown water levels rising
at the beach, but Collins
said it’s nothing out of the
ordinary.
Last fall, as a result
of rising Lake Michigan
water levels, Glencoe
Beach faced a large issue
after sand movement left
a 16-inch water main exposed
at Perlman Boating
Beach, adjacent to Glencoe
Beach. The main,
which went out of service
temporarily, transported
treated water from the Village’s
water plant out to
the main water network.
“The water main was
running the length of the
sailing beach,” Collins
said. “We faced so much
erosion that it was exposed
but the Village relocated
it.”
The Glencoe Public
Works Department moved
the impacted section of
the water main further
west onto the beach, under
more solid sand. The
total cost of the project
was estimated to be near
$56,000.
Since the project, the
beach rebounded and
hasn’t faced any other issues,
Collins confirmed
with The Anchor.
Bernard, Contributing
Editor. Full story at
expanded from fitting 20
vehicles to 26 vehicles.
Additionally, the Community
House is proposing
the parking lot as a temporary
or interim use for
the property, and as such,
the parking lot is being
constructed with a 2-inch
layer of asphalt over gravel.
It is estimated to have a
life span of approximately
five to seven years.
The Community House
is currently engaged in
strategic planning for
its operations and facilities.
At the completion
of the strategic planning
process, it is expected to
provide direction for the
future long-term use of
the parcel.
Each body recommended
approval with the Plan
Commission and Zoning
Board of Appeals recommendations
conditioned
upon a term being placed
on the special-use permit.
However, the council opted
not to place a term on
the permit.
“I’d be in favor of eliminating
(a term),” trustee
Kristin Ziv said.
Trustee Andrew Cripe
felt there was no reason to
have a term imposed and
require the Community
House to go through the
approval process again in
the future.
THE LAKE FOREST LEADER
Chase Bank receives
green light to replace old
McDonald’s site
After months of at
times contentious discussions,
the Lake Forest
City Council approved the
construction of a Chase
Bank including drive
through service in the
Waukegan Road business
district during its meeting
on Monday, April 2.
The construction of
the new Chase Bank,
which will replace the
old McDonald’s site at
884 Waukegan Road, was
approved in a 7-1 vote,
with Alderman Raymond
Buschmann the only “no”
vote.
This approval comes
after months of discussion
and consideration by
the City Council, Building
Review Board, Plan Commission
and City Legal
Committee.
Residents and aldermen
alike spoke of their concern
over another bank
in the Waukegan business
district and its impact on
the nature of the district
as a whole. However, others
welcomed the national
branch, expecting it to become
an engaged member
of the business community.
“We take our relationship
with our businesses
in this community very
seriously,” said Alderman
Prue Beidler. “When
someone from a national
group like Chase comes
in, we want them to understand.”
Although many aldermen
expressed displeasure
with the bank, they
noted that legally, Chase
fit the requirements of existing
on the property and
receiving a special-use
permit.
“A bank is not my first
choice,” said Alderman
Jack Reisenberg. “[But],
I don’t get to pick and
choose.”
THE NORTHBROOK TOWER
Glenbrook North grad
making waves in water
sports world
Even though Danny
Amir grew up more than
1,000 miles away from
the state of Florida, he always
knew he would one
day end up in Orlando.
Amir, a graduate of
Glenbrook North in 2000,
spent his teenage years
on the chase. But Amir’s
chase was never one for
money or affection, rather
one for unfrozen water
— a needed means for
pursuing his near-lifelong
love of water sports. And
Orlando, often deemed
the mecca of water sports,
was always his end goal.
“In my mind, I kind
of always wanted to get
down to Florida so that
I could be on the water
all the time,” Amir said.
“When I was a teenager,
all I wanted to do was be
on the water all day.”
While living in Northbrook,
Amir spent his
summers traveling to
Twin Lakes, Wis., where
he learned to water ski and
developed a love for the
sport through the Aquanuts
water skiing club.
Following his time at
GBN, Amir got a job at
Munson Ski and Marine,
where he worked with the
some of the best water skiing
equipment available.
In his early 20s, after
two years at Munson,
Amir saved enough money
and followed his best
friend Erik Ruck south to
Florida.
Our Place builds on vision of founder
Alexa Burnell
Freelance Reporter
There is much to celebrate
at Our Place — a
Wilmette-based nonprofit
that creates meaningful
lives for teens and adults
with developmental disabilities.
This year marks
the 10th anniversary of
the organization and Wilmette’s
Lisa D’Angelo
was recently named the
new executive director.
While it is based in Wilmette,
Our Place serves a
number of North Shore
communities including
Highland Park.
Our Place was founded
in 2008 by Jane Gallery, of
Winnetka. Her son, Frank,
was born with a rare genetic
condition, further
complicated by juvenile
diabetes. When he reached
age 22, he was no longer
eligible to receive services
through the school systems,
so Gallery decided
to come up with a solution.
“Once a person ages out
of school system services,
it can be awfully frightening
for a parent,” Gallery
said. “I searched and
searched for some type of
program that would work
for him, but there was
nothing remotely close to
us. It made me think that
maybe I can do something
about that.”
Gallery shared her frustrations
and desire for
change with parents in
similar situations. She
soon found a group of
folks rallying around her.
“By the end of my first
day, I had 30 signatures,
supporting my idea,” Gallery
said. “Our original
concept was to model the
facility like a senior center,
filled with enriching activities,
a supportive staff
and positive environment.
Apparently, my idea was
well-received, because before
I knew it, people were
donating funds, allowing
me to pursue my idea.”
Gallery’s next step was
to present the idea to New
Trier Township. She explained
the importance of
keeping these young adults
in their own communities,
where they could grow and
thrive by immersing themselves
in their neighborhoods.
It didn’t take a hard
sell to convince the Township
that the idea was a
good one, and they quickly
granted Gallery $20,000 to
put the wheels in motion.
Gallery then set up shop
at donated space within
The Community Church
of Wilmette and hired one,
part-time program manager,
who was quickly
adored by the participants.
In the beginning, Our
Place offered 11 hours of
programming per week,
but that soon turned out to
not be enough for the eager
participants and growing
registration. Today, Our
Place is open 9 a.m.-6 p.m.
Monday through Saturday.
Each weekday morning,
members can start their
day with three hours of
vocational work. Members
learn valuable work and
life skills from their experiences
at the New Trier
Township food pantry, the
Glencoe Public Library,
Three Crowns Park Senior
Living Center and the
Winnetka Thrift Shop. For
the remainder of the day,
members have a variety of
activities to choose from.
They can work out at the
Wilmette Park District
Center Fitness Club, play
kickball or basketball at the
Takiff Center through the
Glencoe Park District, and
so much more. On Saturday
nights, socials are held,
where members can dance,
together Thursday, April 5, in Wilmette. Photos by Rhonda Holcomb/22nd Century Media
eat pizza, play games and
hang out, just as any young
adult likes to do.
“These opportunities integrate
the members of Our
Place into the surrounding
communities, allowing
them to socialize, develop
job skills and build relationships,”
D’Angelo said.
“Just like anyone else, they
want to feel connected to a
community.”
Along with bringing
members out into the community,
D’Angelo would
like to see more volunteers
coming to Our Place, one
of her immediate priorities.
She also wants to focus
on the changing needs
of the members, with hope
of bringing the right type
of enriching opportunities
into their lives.
“As Our Place celebrates
its 10th anniversary,
a number of our
participants are now in
their early 30s,” D’Angelo
said. “While we continue
to work closely with area
high schools transitioning
Lisa D’Angelo, of Wilmette, executive director of Our Place of New Trier Township,
talks with Patrick Rees about the heARTwords project he is working on while Dan
Cohen, of Highland Park, and Sean Waterbury, of Wilmette, look on, Thursday, April
teens to Our Place, we also
want to address the changing
needs of our participants
as they age. My goal
is to find more opportunities
for them to work and
make friends.” Parents of
members say the program
is exceptionally unique,
offering opportunities for
developmentally-disabled
teens and adults that are
hard to come by.
Laura Rader, currently
of Northbrook, moved
her family from St. Louis
about 1 1/2 years ago, so
that her daughter, Jessica,
22, could become part of
the community. The experience
has been nothing
short of heartwarming.
“What Our Place offers
is just amazing,” Laura
Rader said. “The staff is
wonderful; they make everyone
feel like equals. The
programming is incredibly
well-rounded, giving teens
and adults, like my daughter,
a meaningful and purposeful
life. The environment
is so positive and all
who are involved become
incredibly close.”
Highland Park Mayor
Residents from more
than 4,800 cities across
the United States take part
in the National Mayor’s
Challenge for Water Conservation
in the month of
Preparing for spring rain
Rain and flooding are
difficult to deal with.
They can cause damages
that are hard to cope with
financially.
However, you can potentially
minimize damages
by making sure you
prepare for the workse.
The City has recommendations
and options
that can be pursued to
minimize flooding risks
either in a basement or
yard. The risk of flooding
cannot be completely
prevented, especially
for those living in floodplain
areas, but in certain
circumstances, property
owners can take proactive
steps to mitigate
flooding.
• Inspect flood protection
devices such as back
flow preventers, sump
pumps, and battery backups;
check that valves and
standpipes, are in good
working condition.
• Contact a licensed
plumber to have your
storm and sanitary lateral
service pipes (running
from home to street) inspected
to be free of roots
and debris.
• Contact a licensed
plumber for inspection
and verification that storm
lateral service pipes are
not connected to sanitary
lateral service pipes.
These two lateral pipes
should remain separate
and connected separately
to City storm and sanitary
main pipes.
• Make sure all exterior
drains such as window
well drains, outside yard
drains, gutters, and street
drains are clear of debris,
leaves and any other obstructions.
• Install an overhead
sanitary stem to alleviate
sewer backups.
Twelve Maple School
North Shore resident to compose piece for Chicago Symphony Orchestra
Jacquelyn Schlabach
Assistant Editor
For a final project in his
summer course at Northwestern,
Jim Stephenson
was instructed to write a
bad piece of music.
The course, Adventures
in Bad Music, had
a backward approach to
helping students discover
what they do and don’t
like. The 24-year-old at
the time had never taken a
composition course before
this one, and surprisingly,
wrote a “bad” piece that
ended up being enjoyed
by his classmates. It was
that moment that encouraged
Stephenson to begin
writing music full time.
“I was like well, if I try
to write a bad piece and
someone likes it, let’s see
what happens when I try
to write good music,” he
said. “I started composing
at the age of 24 and that
grew and grew and grew.”
His talent and love for
music composition led
him to receive an invitation
in November 2015
to write a piece for the
Chicago Symphony Orchestra,
which performs
at Ravinia in Highland
Park, that will be premiered
during one of their
concert weekends in June
2019.
“It’s just one of those
beautiful things that you
never expect,” said Stephenson,
a resident of
Lake Forest. “I mean, this
is literally the orchestra I
grew up listening to. My
dream as a kid was to
someday play in the Chicago
Symphony. That’s
not happening, because I
don’t play trumpet anymore,
but this about as
close or maybe even better.”
Stephenson played the
trumpet growing up in
Lockport, and when he
was 14 years old, a year
after he attended Lockport
Township High School,
he knew if he was going
to take his music career
seriously, he needed to
attend a school that focused
on the arts. From
sophomore year to senior
year, he went to Interlochen
Center for the Arts
for high school in Interlochen,
Michigan. Following
graduation, he continued
his music studies at
New England Conservatory
in Boston.
His first job out of
school was playing trumpet
with a symphony orchestra
in Naples, Fla.
Lake Forest resident and composer Jim Stephenson was invited to write a piece for the
Chicago Symphony Orchestra to debut in June 2019. The orchestra plays at Ravinia in
A digital presence in
modern journalism
Xavier Ward
xavier@hplandmark.com
As journalism
evolves into the
modern era, journalists
have had to adapt
to the ever changing flow
of news.
The speed at which we
get the information out and
the number of places you
get news from has changed
considerably since the
heyday of the newspaper
many years ago.
However, accuracy is
paramount — perhaps
more so than ever before.
News is everywhere.
The unfortunate thing for
those of us in the news
industry is that it’s never
been easier to call yourself
a journalist.
Grab a camera, start a
YouTube channel, make
a podcast or write a blog.
Thanks to the internet, it’s
never been easier.
At the same time, being
an accredited, trusted journalist
has never been more
difficult.
News organizations live
under constant scrutiny, as
they should. The information
we deliver to you has
to be accurate, concise and
relevant.
Social media, in a way,
has muddied that mission.
The two main social
media platforms news is
delivered on, Facebook
and Twitter, work with
algorithms that deliver you
the content deemed most
important to you via the
things you click on and the
things you like and share.
The Landmark has a
digital presence on all of
these platforms. Depending
on how often you
engage with our content,
you may or may not see it
frequently.
However, if you’re
taking the time to read
this mildly self-indulgent
column, you probably
care about what’s going
on in the local community.
You want to know what
the Highland Park City
Council is up to, what new
laws have been hatched at
City Hall or just what new
businesses are opening in
the area. Well, that’s what
we’re here for, to keep
you informed about what’s
going on in the local community.
You’ll find the same
content in our paper as you
will online. If it suits your
fancy, then go check us out
online. If not, that’s fine
too. You’ll keep getting
the paper in the mailbox
and we’ll keep working to
make sure that it’s accurate,
fact-driven content.
What I will ask of you,
however, is to hold us accountable.
News organizations
across the world thrive
when their readers interact
with them.
When we get something
wrong, tell us. We want to
know.
Our role as community
journalists is to keep the
community informed about
what’s going on around
them.
Composer
From Page 26
He had the summers off,
which led him to take the
Adventures of Bad Music
course at Northwestern
one year. In 2007, he
quit the orchestra, and his
wife Sally and their four
children moved to Lake
Forest, where he currently
lives. That’s when his
composition career began
to take off.
Stephenson has written
approximately 250 pieces
for various singers, soloists
and ensembles such
as the Minnesota Orchestra,
L.A. Philharmonic,
Atlanta Symphony and
many more. He and his
wife have their own business
Stephenson Music,
where Stephenson writes
the pieces and Sally prints
the music and ships them
right from their home office.
“For the most part, my
business works with word
of mouth,” he said. “So if
I write a piece and hopefully
somebody likes it,
go figure
6
they’ll either put a video
of themselves playing it
or they’ll tell their friends
about it. I mean social media
is such a big help for
us composers, it can also
be a big hurt of course too,
if I write something that’s
terrible, then people will
talk about that, as well.
I’m only as good as my
last piece, so I just try to
put the best stuff out there
that I possibly can and
hopefully people will talk
about it.”
A few years ago, Stephenson
wrote a piece
that was played at Ravinia,
which is where the
Chicago Symphony Orchestra
plays during the
summer. A bass trombone
player for Chicago Symphony
Orchestra, Charles
Vernon, approached Stephenson
following the
performance of his piece
and asked Stephenson if
he could see more of his
music. Little did Stephenson
know, Vernon brought
the music to the conductor
of Chicago Symphony
Orchestra, Riccardo Muti,
and he liked what he saw.
Local crafts beer to support brain cancer research
Katie Copenhaver
Freelance Reporter
Benjamin Franklin once
said, “In wine there is
wisdom, in beer there is
freedom, in water there is
bacteria.
At Highwood’s Kings
and Convicts, in beer
there is also philanthropy.
A few hundred people
turned out for a benefit
at Highwood’s Kings and
Convicts Brewing Company
Saturday, April 7.
The brewery released
a limited-edition beer,
Stew’s Brew, to benefit
Benny’s World, a nonprofit
that funds pediatric
brain cancer research.
The Hefeweizen beer
is named in honor of Dr.
Stewart Goldman, one of
the leading doctors treating
children who have the
disease at Lurie Children’s
Hospital in Chicago.
Benny Watters, the late
son of one of the brewery’s
owners, Brendan
Watters, was one of the
children in Goldman’s
care. He died in 2010 from
pediatric brain cancer.
Chris Bradley, Watters’
partner in the brewing
company, said, “We
wanted to do one big thing
to raise awareness. I’m
grateful so many people
have showed up.”
Dr. Stew, as he is known
to his young patients, is
the division head of hematology,
oncology, neuro-oncology
and stem cell
transplantation at Lurie
Children’s Hospital, and a
professor in the same field
at Northwestern University’s
Feinberg School of
“Benny was a great kid.
mother and Brendan’s wife,
runs the Benny’s World
foundation, which their family
founded in March 2008,
two months after Benny’s
diagnosis of Diffuse Intrinsic
Pontine Glioma (DIPG),
a pediatric brain stem tumor.
The median overall survival
rate of children diagnosed
with it is nine-12 months, according
to the Benny’s World
website. In 2011, Benny’s
World became a founding
member of the DIPG Collaborative,
which brings together
foundations to efficiently
fund and inspire DIPG cancer
research.
All proceeds from sales
of Stew’ Brew are going to
the foundation. Bradley said
the brewery made a 500-gallon
batch of the beer, which
is equivalent to 150 cases.
He expects the brewery will
have 20-30 cases after the
event to sell in the tap room
over the next few weeks.
To create the special brew,
Brendan Watters and Bradley
worked with the North Urban
Brewing Society (NUBS),
a homebrew club based in
Lake County.
The group held a contest
among club members,
through which it received
28 entries. Watters, Bradley,
Goldman and a few others
served as the judges who
selected the winning beer,
crafted by Zach Gelfand of
Mundelein.
Trevor Patric, president of
NUBS, said the club is excited
to be involved for the
first time with a charitable
activity.
“This opportunity just
came up, and we jumped on
it,” Patric said.
The people attending the
April 7 event varied in age
and purpose. There were a
few current and former patients
of Lurie Children’s
Hospital, including 13-yearold
Rose, who has been
battling brain cancer for 10
years.
Two of the Watters’ three
other children were on hand
to help out. Many Highwood
residents and beer enthusiasts
were also there to enjoy
and support the brewing
company, which opened its
taproom at 523 Bank Lane,
Highwood, in May 2017.
Both the Watters family
and Bradley live in Lake Forest.
Entertainment was provided
by the Swing Sonatas,
a jazz band of Lake Forest
High School students Luke
Guilson, Charlotte Moore,
Cathal O’Sullivan, Katie
Pierce and Mark Smirnov.
visit us online at www.hplandmark.com
Their involvement came
because Moore’s family is
friends with the Watters family.
The band has been playing
together for two years,
having met through the high
school’s orchestra and wind
ensemble. They said they
were playing for three hours
at the event, which gave them
the unique opportunity to go
through all of their songs.
The Left Bank of Lake
Forest brought its food truck
to the event while Bent Fork
Bakery of Highwood donated
a cake in honor of Benny’s
World and also Benny’s
birthday, which is April 11.
Once Stew’s Brew sells
out, people can enjoy Kings
and Convicts’ other original
beers at their tap room,
Wednesdays through Sundays,
and from approximately
120 vendors throughout
the Chicago area, including
Binny’s Beverage Depot,
Sunset Foods and numerous
restaurants and bars.
Glenview’s So Gong Dong carves niche within Korean cuisine
Chris Pullam
Contributing Editor
Seunghwa Oh and his
family immigrated to Glenview
from South Korea in
early 2013 to further his career
with a Korean airline.
Opening a restaurant
wasn’t in the family’s initial
plan, but Oh’s wife,
Jiyeon Nam, opened So
Gong Dong on Milwaukee
Avenue only a few months
later. She chose the location
for its proximity to the
established Asian community
in West Glenview.
Several Korean restaurants
already existed
nearby, but So Gong Dong
carved its own niche within
the popular cuisine.
Namely, the restaurant
focuses on soondubu (Korean
soup), bibimbap (rice
dish) and Korean barbecue.
“There are a lot of Korean
restaurants around
here, but they don’t have
a specialty like us,” said
Oh, who retired from the
airline a few years ago to
serve as the vice president
of SGD DUBU, So Gong
Dong’s parent company.
“We just focus on the specialities.
Our menu is very
simple. Totally simple. We
can tell you we have three
items, that’s it ... but we do
them well. When people
want soondubu, bibimbap
or Korean barbecue, they
say, ‘Let’s go to So Gong
Dong.’ That’s our focus.”
Even with only three
specialties, the restaurant
still offers plenty of options
for the curious diner.
The soondubu, which accounts
for 40 to 65 percent
of sales, is a Korean silken
spicy stew that comes in a
spicy marinade.
Appetizers include
boiled or pan-fried dumplings
and seafood pancakes,
crispy Korean-style
pancakes filled with seafood
and scallions.
According to Oh, the
restaurant has thrived over
the past five years because
the menu is healthy, plentiful,
authentic and wellbalanced.
“We use healthy ingredients
and we provide a lot
of side dishes compared to
any other Korean restaurants,”
he said. “We serve
The mixed ramen bowl ($10.99) is a popular choice.
is what you’d eat in Korea.
And everything is wellbalanced,
so everyone can
come and enjoy the food
for a fair price.”
Dubu, the namesake of
the franchise, is a Korean
name for bean curds, or
tofu, made from soybeans.
According to the company
website, “dubu is a versatile
ingredient with many
health benefits.”
It is made by curdling
fresh soya milk, pressing it
into a solid block and then
cooling it. Then the liquid
is discarded and the curds
are pressed to form a cohesive
substance. It can be
cooked in different ways
to change its texture from
smooth and soft to crisp
and crunchy.
At So Gong Dong, the
stews are served in traditional
earthenware bowls
while “bubbling hot.”
They can be adjusted for
very different spice levels
and flavor preferences,
with options like beef,
pork, kimchi, oyster, clam
and shrimp. A raw egg
may be added to the stew
and folded into the contents
to cook from the heat
within the bowl.
The Glenview restaurant,
established in 2013,
was the franchise’s third
location. Since then, it’s
done nothing but thrive,
boasting 12 locations
across Illinois, New Jersey,
New York, Massachusetts
and Ohio. Oh and Nam
recently opened a smaller
in Chicago.
While So Gong Dong
was established with Korean
customers in mind,
food-lovers of all stripes
will find something for
them on the menu.
When I stopped by the
restaurant with a group of
22nd Century Media editors,
we devoured a spread
of offerings that included
the chicken galbi ($15.99),
seafood soondubu jjigae
($10.99), seafood pancake
($12.99), vegetable bibimbap
bowl ($12.99 dinner
portion), beef short ribs
($19.99), mixed ramen
bowl ($10.99) and fried
dumplings ($8.99).
Prior to our visit, I’d
never tried Korean food.
To make matters worse,
I’m a vegetarian, so nearly
all the food was off limits.
Expect, that is, the vegetable
bibimbap bowl, and
after one bite, I hoarded it
at my end of the table until
my chopsticks scraped
against the bottom of my
hot-stone rice bowl.
The dish features carrots,
broccoli, mushrooms,
red and green peppers, onions
and cucumbers topped
with an egg cooked sunnyside
up. After blending in
a little Korean hot sauce, I
spent the next 15 minutes
in absolute silence as I devoured
the dish.
Xavier Ward, editor of
The Highland Park Landmark,
and Eric DeGrechie,
editor of The Wilmette
Beacon, had the other six
menu items all to themselves.
The seafood soondubu
jjigae, a savory and spicy
stew featuring clams and
shrimp, complemented
the chicken galbi, topped
with a spicy marinade and
a variety of hot peppers.
On the other end of the
spectrum were the seafood
pancake, baked with fish
and scallions, and the beef
short ribs, Oh’s favorite
dish, served in a special
house sauce.
The vegetable bibimbap bowl ($12.99 dinner portion) is filled with steamed rice,
assorted seasoned vegetables and egg.
10 Questions
with Eva Hanson
Eva Hanson is a sophomore
at Highland Park
High School and is a
defender on the girls soccer
team.
How did you get
started playing
soccer?
I started playing soccer
when I was five years old.
I played [American Youth
Soccer Organization] for a
while and then I switched
over to Chicago Magic
[Soccer Club].
Sports Briefs
Boys, girls Giants
swimmers and divers
awarded academic honors
The National Interscholastic
Swim Coaches
Association has recognized
both teams with an
Academic All-American
Scholar Team honor.
The boys swimming and
diving team received the
award at the Silver Level
for having a varsity team
cumulative GPA of 3.602.
The girls swimming and
diving team received the
same honor at the Gold
Level for a cumulative
GPA of 3.955.
The following swimmers
and divers are recognized
individually as being
Academic All-Americans
recognized by the NISCA:
• Boys – Sam Hoffman
• Girls – Aliana Velick,
Rachel Wander, Hannah
Wander, Sarah Fishbein,
Breanna Haak, Arianne
Cole, Noa Cole

Why do you love
playing soccer?
I would say being together
as a team. It’s really
fun when you can win
together and lose together
and you’ll know that
you’ll always have each
other’s backs.
What is a challenging
part about playing
soccer?
The most challenging
part, for me, is when
you’re down in a game and
you’re trying not to give
up and stay in the game.
Who is the most
prepared person on
the team?
Probably Amanda
Amiel, she is sort of our
team mom kind of. She always
has stuff for all of us.
Where is the coolest
place you have every
travelled to?
The coolest place I have
ever travelled to would
probably be Italy because
it has beautiful architecture
and it was warm there too.
What is your go-to
pump-up song?
Probably “God’s Plan”
by Drake.
Do you have any pregame
superstitions?
Before every game, and
also during halftime, the
defense does a handshake
together to start off the
game right.
Brittany Kapa/22nd Century Media
What is an activity
you want to do off
your bucket list?
Something that I’ve always
wanted to do is go
hot-air ballooning. I think it
would be really pretty to see
the world from so high up.
Who is your favorite
professional athlete?
Maybe Tobin Heath because
she is really good
and it’s really inspiring to
see such a good woman
athlete.
If you could trade
places with anyone for
a day, who would you
choose?
I guess I would trade
places with Selena Gomez.
She has a really good
voice, and I don’t. Just for
a day though.
Kriss settles in at Boston U., posts new PR at relay
Brittany Kapa, Sports Editor
Veronica Kriss’ venture
into the world of collegiate
competition has not gone
as expected.
The Boston University
freshman, a 2017 graduate
of Highland Park High
School, suffered a groin
tear in the fall hindering
her from running cross
country.
“I knew I wasn’t going
to have much of a crosscountry
season,” she said.
“I was able to train a little
bit before indoors. I had
another setback during
indoors which was a quad
strain. Now, with rehab,
I’m feeling a lot better.”
Thus far Kriss, for track
and field this spring, has
competed in one indoor
event and an outdoor relay.
A distance runner for the
Terriers, Kriss surpassed
her goal at the Florida Relays
that were held March
29-31 in Gainesville, Fla.
“I only had a couple of
workouts coming back
from that second injury,”
Kriss said. “I wasn’t really
sure about how it would
go. My goal was to break
18 [minutes] and I was
well under that.”
Kriss came in well under
her goal and finished
the 5,000-meter run in 17
minutes, 39.51 seconds.
BU coach Paul Spangler
predicted Kriss would
break the 18-minute mark
and was confident she
would go 17:40 in the race.
“It’s really funny, I
doubt myself sometimes,
but coach always knows,”
Kriss laughed.
Kriss said the experience
was a new one for
her. The Florida Relays
marked her first collegiate
outdoor meet of her career.
“It was crazy being a
freshman and being able to
travel with the team,” she
said. “It was definitely really
nervous with it being a
travel meet and one of my
first races but it was really
good competition.”
Kriss’ nerves were eased
when she recognized a familiar
face at the relays,
Ania Grzeszczak, a sophomore
at Mercer College.
She added that it make the
experience that much better.
However, being at the
Florida Relays as a freshman
was a unique experience
all around.
“It was really crazy,”
she said. “We only had a
handful of people chosen
to go.”
Overall, Kriss said she
felt like she is performing
better as a runner despite
the injuries and the limited
practice time. She credited
her success with BU’s
track and field program
and her teammates.
“In high school I didn’t
always have people to
push me,” she said. “I’m
on a team full of really
fast girls and having those
people push me has made
a huge difference in my
training.”
Moving forward, Kriss’
goal is to keep building on
the positive progress she
has made.
“I want to make sure I
stay healthy by doing my
rehab and staying strong,”
she said. “I reached a big
goal of mine, which was
just to break 18.
“My next goal is I would
like to score at my Patriot
Leagues conference meet.”

Giants’ Connors all-around champ at Bohl
David Jaffe
Freelance Reporter
Junior Kevin Connors
has been a very welcome
addition to Highland Park
gymnastics.
All Connors did at the
19-team Mundelein Bob
Bohl Invite Friday, April
6 was win the all-around
title (55.825, the horizontal
bar (9.6) and the still
rings (9.5). He also finished
with higher than a
nine in all but one event.
His dismount on the h-
bar was extremely difficult
but he managed to get
high up in the air and perfectly
stick the landing.
“My goal on the dismount
was to get as much
height as possible,” Connors
said. “No one else
was doing that type of
dismount so I wanted to
make sure it looked perfect.”
Despite not having an
easy task, he was just as
strong on rings.
“The judges were a little
tough on my score,” Connors
said. “But I felt I hit
my routine just about perfectly.
When you stick it
exactly the way you want
to it’s a great feeling.”
Connors was also second
on pommel horse
(9.3), vault (9.425) and
parallel bars (9.3) and
earned an 8.7 on floor.
He joined Highland Park
after previously competing
in club gymnastics, at the
Buffalo Grove Gymnastics
Center. Connors is enjoying
competing as a member
of a team.
“Club is very serious
and the sole focus is trying
to compete in college,”
Connors said. “But
high school you’re competing
to help your team
do as well as they can.
routine. Photos by Brittany Kapa/22nd Century Media
Everyone fights hard in
every event and that’s really
fun to see. I was used
to it being very individual
but it’s enjoyable competing
now in a team-oriented
fashion.”
Teammate Matt Hyatt
took fifth on vault (9.3)
and tied for sixth on p-
bars (9). He also had solid
scores on floor (8.5) and
h-bar (8.2). Tim Steves
did well on floor (8.7),
vault (8.2) and p-bars (8).
The Giants finished fifth
at the invite with 149.725
points.
A Warriors’ success
Both Highland Park and
Deerfield share gymnastics
coach Doug Foerch
and a practice space. The
team competed back-toback
at the Bob Bohl Invite.
Highland Park resident
Grant Baucom, a sophomore
at Deerfield High
School, placed seventh in
the all around and finished
fourth on the still rings
(9.25).
