Composing for CSO a ‘dream come true’ for Lockport native
Jacquelyn Schlabach
Assistant Editor
For a final project in his
summer course at Northwestern,
Jim Stephenson
was instructed to write a bad
piece of music.
The course, Adventures in
Bad Music, had a backward
approach to helping students
discover what they do and
don’t like. The 24-year-old
at the time had never taken
a composition course before
this one, and surprisingly,
wrote a “bad” piece that
ended up being enjoyed by
his classmates. It was that
moment that encouraged
Stephenson to begin writing
music full time.
“I was like well, if I try to
write a bad piece and someone
likes it, let’s see what
happens when I try to write
good music,” he said. “I
started composing at the age
of 24 and that grew and grew
and grew.”
His talent and love for
music composition led him
to receive an invitation in
November 2015 to write a
piece for the Chicago Symphony
Orchestra that will
be premiered during one of
their concert weekends in
June 2019.
“It’s just one of those
beautiful things that you
never expect,” Stephenson
said. “I mean, this is literally
the orchestra I grew up listening
to. My dream as a kid
was to someday play in the
Chicago Symphony. That’s
not happening, because I
don’t play trumpet anymore,
but this is about as close or
maybe even better.”
Stephenson played the
trumpet growing up in Lockport,
and when he was 14
years old, a year after he attended
Lockport Township
High School, he knew if he
was going to take his music
career seriously, he needed
to attend a school that focused
on the arts. From
sophomore to senior year, he
went to Interlochen Center
for the Arts for high school
in Interlochen, Michigan.
Following graduation, he
continued his music studies
at New England Conservatory
in Boston.
His first job out of school
was playing trumpet with
a symphony orchestra in
Naples, Florida. He had the
summers off, which led him
to take the Adventures of
Bad Music course at Northwestern
one year. In 2007,
he quit the orchestra, and his
wife, Sally, and their four
children moved to Lake Forest,
where he currently lives.
That’s when his composition
career began to take off.
Stephenson has written
approximately 250 pieces
for various singers, soloists
and ensembles such as the
Minnesota Orchestra, L.A.
Philharmonic, Atlanta Symphony
and many more. He
and his wife have their own
business, Stephenson Music,
where Jim writes the pieces
and Sally prints the music
and ships them right from
their home office.
“For the most part, my
business works with word
of mouth,” he said. “So if I
write a piece and hopefully
somebody likes it, they’ll
either put a video of themselves
playing it or they’ll
tell their friends about it. I
mean social media is such
a big help for us composers,
it can also be a big hurt of
course too, if I write something
that’s terrible, then
people will talk about that,
as well. I’m only as good as
my last piece, so I just try to
put the best stuff out there
that I possibly can and hopefully
people will talk about
it.”
A few years ago, Stephenson
wrote a piece that was
played at Ravinia, in Highland
Park, which is where
the Chicago Symphony
Orchestra plays during the
summer. A bass trombone
player for CSO, Charles
Vernon, approached Stephenson
following the performance
of his piece and
asked Stephenson if he could
see more of his music. Little
did Stephenson know, Vernon
brought the music to the
conductor of CSO, Riccardo
Muti, and he liked what he
saw. Shortly after, Stephenson
was asked to write a
piece for the orchestra.
“[Vernon] goes, ‘Jim, I’ve
got some news for ya, how
would you like to write a
piece for the Chicago Symphony?’
And you know, I
picked my jaw up off the
floor and I said, ‘yeah that
would be pretty cool.’”
Stephenson wasn’t able
to go public with the information
until this past January,
when CSO made the
announcement themselves.
According to him, big orchestras
plan their seasons
usually two years in advance,
which led to Stephenson
not revealing to anyone
about him writing music for
CSO until this year. In June,
he will start to compose the
15-minute piece, featuring
the bass trombone player as
the soloist, that will take him
about two months to write.
“I’m kind of a quicker
composer compared to most,
and I don’t know if that will
ever change, it’s just kind
of the way I work,” he said.
“But it is my job. I get up in
the morning and I work from
eight until four or five writing
music, but it’s completely
my job.”
The piece doesn’t have a
title just yet, but Stephenson
said that may come as
he starts writing, or after it’s
completed. In the meantime,
he will meet with Vernon
Lockport native and composer, Jim Stephenson, was invited to write a piece for the Chicago
Symphony Orchestra to debut in June 2019. Sandy Swanson
prior to writing the music to
give Stephenson an idea of
how he wants it to sound and
mesh with the ensemble.
“What’ll happen more
than anything, is I will just
hear [Vernon’s] personality
in his sound, because just
like we all have different
speaking voices, we all have
different sounds on our instruments,”
Stephenson said.
“I’ll hear his personality and
it’ll give me ideas [on how
to write the piece].”
Normally, Stephenson
doesn’t meet with the soloist,
because many of the
pieces he writes are for
people or ensembles not
in the area. He’ll write the
piece based on what he’s
told by the soloist, what he
hears off recordings, or with
background knowledge he
already has.
“[Vernon] might just do
something totally at random
and I’ll be like ‘oh there
we go, I’m going to feature
that.’ It’s very important for
me to hear how he plays,” he
said. “I mean I already sort
of have an idea because he’s
been in the orchestra a long
time and I’ve heard the orchestra.
But hearing him up
close and personal will be
hugely important for me.”
Those who want to hear
Stephenson’s piece up close
and in-person might have to
wait until 2019, but it should
be worth the wait.
“It’s a dream come true
for me, it literally is,” Stephenson
said. “When I was
in high school, I used to play
recordings of the Chicago
Symphony nonstop, listening
to them over and over
again, and so now to get to
write a piece... I mean these
are the best players, and to
get to put music on their
stands, written by me is going
to be really cool.”

Taft Foundation prepares for annual craft fair
Amanda Del Buono
Freelance Reporter
The crafting craze continues
to remain on trend,
and Lockport families will
have the opportunity to partake
in the appreciation for
handmade, locally produced
goods at the Taft Foundation’s
upcoming ninth annual
craft fair.
Families and local community
members are invited
to Taft School on Saturday,
April 28, from 9 a.m. to 2
p.m. for the craft fair.
Admission to the event
will be $1 for those 12
years and older, and children
younger than 12 years
old will be admitted free of
charge. Strollers are welcome.
The funds collected
from the admission charge
are to benefit students in Taft
School’s Beta Club, said
Christine Jelinek, director of
the Taft Foundation.
“We have a club called
Beta Club, which is kind of
like a junior’s honor society,
and they’re trying to do a
community service project
and they need some feed
money to do that, so that’s
what the $1 admission fee
will be for,” she said.
Craft fair attendees will be
able to spend the day browsing
more than 50 vendor
booths, which will be offering
a variety of products,
from quality, handmade
goods to home-based business
products, like Tupperware
and LuLaRoe. Vendors
are to include a mix of
Lockport locals and those
who will be traveling from
nearby communities.
“The craft fair tends to
be a community favorite,”
Jelinek said. “People like the
craft fair because we tend to
“We are a small oneschool
school district that
struggles financially, so
about a decade ago, I started
this foundation,” Jelinek
said. “… At the time, I was
a newer parent in the district
and I thought it could help
the school. We started out
slowly with trying to raise
money to support some after
school programs, and over
the last 10 years we’ve really
developed into a mainstay
for the district. In fact,
for the last two years, we
have supported the school
during hard times that all of
our sports programs, all of
our music programs and all
extracurricular [activities]
were left unfunded… So, we
worked really hard to fund
all of those programs for the
last two years.”
The foundation has played
a role in several other initiatives
as well, such as
implementing Chromebooks
and providing teacher
mini-grants. Funds raised at
events, such as the craft fair,
help to support these initiatives
and Taft School students.
“All of the proceeds go
back to the district,” Jelinek
said. “We don’t have very
much administrative overhead,
except for typical
things like insurance… It all
helps the district.”
Currently, it has turned
its focus onto developing a
STEM — science, technology,
engineering and math
— program at Taft School,
Jelinek said. As a result, the
funds that are raised from
the craft fair, aside from admission,
will go toward establishing
City Council
Officials approve plans for
downtown streetscaping project
Decorative benches
to be purchased
from Lockport’s
sister city in Italy
Jessie Molloy
Freelance Reporter
The Lockport City Council
approved measures at
its April 4 meeting to move
forward with the long-term
downtown streetscaping
project.
The council voted to approve
two items related to
the streetscaping project; a
contract for the street work
itself and the purchase of
the new decorative benches
for State Street, though there
was some disagreement on
the bench item.
The motion, presented by
City Administrator Ben Benson,
was for the City to approve
the purchase of benches
for a total of $29,050. The
price includes significant
shipping costs because the
benches are being purchased
from a furniture company in
Asiago, Italy, a sister city to
Lockport.
Alderwoman Catherine
Perretta objected to the purchase,
arguing that locally
manufactured benches made
of recycled plastic would
be less expensive, more environmentally
friendly, and
more artistic.
Ben and Mayor Steven
Streit countered the argument,
saying that, while fine
for schools and parks, the
recycled-bottle-cap benches
would not have the appropriate
look for the State Street
project, and would possibly
not last as long.
While much of the council
expressed interest in utilizing
the idea for a temporary display
or later project, the argument
that the Italian benches,
which Streit and Benson said
are finely crafted and include
commemorative decoration
of the two cities’ sisterhood,
won out, as they are what the
committee had decided on
months ago.
Benson reported that the
benches cost about $1,300
each, including the importing
costs. While he acknowledged
that the cost is higher
than what would normally
be paid for street benches, he
noted, “when you’re importing
something like this from
Europe, it’s hard to solicit
multiple competitive bids
for them.”
The council voted to approve
the purchase, with
alderwomen Perretta and
Christina Bergbower voting
against it. Alderman Jim Petrakos
was absent.
The benches will be stored
by the Public Works Department
until the road construction
is complete and they can
be put on display. The first
half of the street’s work is
estimated to be completed
by late summer. The existing
benches on State Street,
which had been donated to
the City at various times and
include name plaques will be
repurposed around City Hall.
The other streetscaping
issue, which was approved
Wednesday, was the contract
for the street work and
beautification on State Street
between 8th and 10th streets
and for the roadwork on
9th Street from the railroad
tracks to Hamilton Street.
The winning bid went
to D. Construction, for
$938,493.02, half a million
dollars less than was originally
budgeted for the work
by the City. Alderman J.R.
Gillogy abstained from the
vote because of a possible
conflict of interest.
The project is to include
road improvements, new
water mains, and curb work
on the two stretches of road
and beautification measures
including planters and trees
along State Street.
In addition to beautifying
and improving the street, the
council hopes that, along
with new truck route plans
being created by the County,
the new design will discourage
trucks from driving
down State Street and that
the added decor will create a
better sound barrier between
pedestrians and the street’s
traffic.
Since the project came in
so far under budget, Benson
proposed the City explore
possible beautification designs
for the impacted portion
of 9th Street from the
railroad tracks to Hamilton
and see if all or part of it
could also be beautified with
the remain $500,000.
“As long as everything is
going to be torn up already,
there is no time that it will
be less expensive to do this,”
Benson said.
Council members expressed
some hesitation on
the plan, but eventually gave
consent to explore the option,
with no commitment
that further action would be
taken.
“I’m willing to look into
it and see what they say,
but basically everything is
cheaper now than it will
be in the future, so I’m not
completely convinced by
that argument,” said Alderman
Jason Vandermeer. “I’m
not saying there’s no way I
would vote for it, but I feel
like we may be losing discipline
on this project.”
Christian Brothers Automotive
is eager to join the
Lockport community.
The Houston-based company
had so much interest in
opening a shop in Lockport
that it took a somewhat unusual
approach to its expansion.
“We’re doing this with
a little bit more risk on our
part, because we don’t currently
have our franchise
owner in tow,” said Josh
Wall, chief development
officer at Christian Brothers
Automotive. “We liked
Lockport so much, certainly
how it’s been developing economically
over the last five
to six years... We really felt
like we had to find the best
place in Lockport to come to
the market.”
Christian Brothers, which
provides a variety of professional
auto-care services,
including upkeep, maintenance,
and repair, is in the
process of breaking into
the Chicagoland market by
opening six stores in the area.
The plan is for the Lockport
store, which is to be located
on E. 159th Street, to be the
southernmost location in the
Chicago area.
“As we dug deeper and
deeper, Lockport quickly
made a short list of markets
that we wanted to bring
Christian Brothers to,” Wall
said.
The Lockport store, which
Wall hopes will be open
sometime in early to mid-
2019, does not currently
have a franchisee, which is a
relatively new approach for
the company, according to
Wall.
“It is a little rarer,” he said.
“We’ve been franchising for
22 years and most of that
time we’ve always gone into
a market with a franchisee
already selected and already
committed to that city.”
The search for a franchisee
for the Lockport location
is ongoing, and anyone
interested in applying can do
so at www.christianbrothers
franchise.com. The process
to become a Christian Brothers
Automotive franchisee
involves a multi-step interview
which includes the
candidate traveling to Houston
and spending a few days
operating one of the stores
there. It’s an in-depth process
that takes about three
months altogether, Wall said.
“We get to know their
strengths, their weaknesses,
their goals, their ambitions,
their heart for people, how
well they want to really serve
people, which is a tremendous
requirement of our franchising
process,” he said.
Getting to know the true
personal values of potential
franchisees is crucial for
Christian Brothers, because
the brand relies heavily on
its motto of “Love your
neighbor as yourself.” And
as the 35-year-old brand has
grown and expanded to 170
locations in 25 states, it has
been vital that every store reflects
that motto of faith and
honesty.
“Throughout that entire
time we’ve been growing,
it’s been incredibly important
that we don’t get away
from our core values,” Wall
said. “We want to ‘love your
neighbor as yourself.’ We
believe regardless of someone’s
background — their
race, color or creed — that’s
a unifying concept that people
want to love their neighbor
as themself.”
The company hopes to
find a franchisee for the
Lockport location sometime
in the next six months or so,
according to Wall, who predicts
Lockport residents will
appreciate the integrity of
Christian Brothers.
“I would anticipate this
store right there on that center
corridor on 159th [Street]
being a great place where
customers know they’re going
to be treated exceptionally
well and they’re going
to know that we’re only going
to recommend services
that the car actually needs,”
he said.

to be completed in
2019, and is part of a larger
street overhaul project estimated
to cost about $15
million over several years.
Water rates
The council also voted
Wednesday to approve an
increase in water rates for
non-Lockport residents living
in Lockport Township.
For years, unincorporated
township residents have paid
15 percent less on their water
bills than their counterparts
in the City of Lockport. This
variance was ruled outdated
and no longer necessary, so
the council had previously
agreed to raise the township
rate, making it equal for all
residents.
Some debate broke out
over when the change
should be implemented. Legally,
the City has to give
residents and township officials
60-days notice, though
Streit was in favor of putting
the raise in effect on
Oct. 1, which would give
the township six-months
notice, “out of courtesy,
since the rule has been this
way for so long.”
This was contested by
Perretta, who said the 60-
day minimum was plenty of
notice.
“We’re making this
change, we should be collecting
our money as soon
as possible,” she said.
Other board members
backed up her claim, and
the board eventually voted
to pass the motion with
the stipulation that the new
rates will go into effect on
July 1.
All the new revenue from
the increased township rates
will go to the Lockport Water
Department.
FROM THE ORLAND PARK PRAIRIE
Trustees open discussion
about reverting mayoral role
to part-time status
The days of a full-time
mayor in Orland Park may
be on borrowed time.
During the Finance Committee
meeting April 2, three
Village Board members forwarded
on an item — without
a recommendation — to
the full Village Board for
discussion and possible action
that could revert the
full-time Village president
position back to a part-time
position after the 2021 election.
The three members of
the committee are trustees
Michael Carroll, Dan Calandriello
and Patricia Gira,
who asked for the item to be
placed on the April 2 committee
meeting agenda.
During the meeting, Gira
said there has been a lot of
discussion — and confusion
— regarding the role of the
full-time position.
“It is very difficult without
clearly outlined parameters
for the full-time position
versus the part-time mayor’s
position,” Gira said. “We’re
not clear on it, and I don’t
think anyone has a good understanding
of it.”
Carroll, the committee
chairman, said he checked
with the Village clerk’s office
to confirm that Mayor
Keith Pekau was sworn in
May 15, 2017. To give it a
full year to see “the effectiveness
of our ordinance,”
The committee members
voted 3-0 to send the item on
to the Village Board without
a recommendation for discussion
and possible action
FROM THE NEW LENOX PATRIOT
Police: Phone charger may
have caused house fire that
killed man, dog
A 69-year-old New Lenox
resident died Friday, April
6, following a house fire on
April 3 that took place in the
2200 block of Sanford Avenue
in New Lenox.
Larry Crabb Sr. reportedly
was removed from the burning
house by his son, Larry
Crabb Jr., and a utility line
worker, who was working
nearby. The family’s dog
died during the fire, according
to New Lenox Deputy
Chief Louis Alessandrini.
Alessandrini said Crabb
Jr. was out to take the family’s
other dog to the vet and
came back at around 9:30
a.m. to find that the house
was on fire. He solicited help
from the aforementioned
utility line worker to help
save his dad. The tri-level
home sustained “extreme”
damage before it was extinguished
by the New Lenox
Fire Protection District and
several other fire departments,
according to a press
release from the New Lenox
Fire Protection District.
Alessandrini said the
cause of the fire is still under
investigation, but he
was told by detectives at
the scene that an off-brand
phone charger may have
been the source of an electrical
fire.
From Page 7
expo that I see year to year
is that we see a lot of girls
getting together and starting
a ladies day out,” Warthen
said. “We also draw moms,
daughters and granddaughters.
That’s what makes me
happy. It’s a great prelude
into Mother’s Day weekend
and a great chance for
women of all ages to bond.”
Among the highlights this
year will be an expanded
roster of vendors, as well as
entertainment options.
“I think people like to see
what the vendors have to
offer,” Warthen said. “It’s a
great opportunity, because
we have an entire stage of
cooking demos, which is
back again this year. We
have some great local chefs,
and you can pick up some
new cooking tips. I know
that was a huge draw last
year.”
She also pointed to the
main stage attractions, such
as Danni Allen — the winner
of Season 14 of “The
of free fitness classes, including
cardio and yoga.
Also returning to the
expo this year is Silk Avenue,
from whom attendees
can purchase custom-made
scarves.
“We’ve got something for
everybody,” Warthen said.
“There’s plenty to do, and
I think people like seeing
the variety of vendors we
get. It’s not all clothing or
Revelling in rivalry
Max Lapthorne
max@lockportlegend.com
One of the most
enjoyable parts of
being a sports fan is
the rivalries.
Enjoying the beauty of the
sport and basking in victory
are great, but there’s no better
feeling than your team
establishing its dominance
over a rival. The satisfaction
is nearly unparalleled.
Every rivalry has its own
history, so no two are quite
the same. And the intensity
of the rivalries often depends
on the sport. For example,
some college rivalries tend
to be more extreme than
those in professional sports,
because the students and
alumni of those schools feel
such a deep connection to
the university. People have
pride in their hometown,
but, in my experience, feuds
between collegiate rivals run
a little bit deeper.
I feel at least somewhat
qualified to judge rivalries,
as I’ve had experience with
a number of them. As a high
school baseball player at
Tinley Park High School,
there was nothing worse than
losing a game to our rival,
Oak Forest.
I attended Michigan State
University, where I had the
pleasure of watching the
football team there dominate
our rival University of Michigan
three out of the four
years I attended. Going into
my freshman year there, I
had no strong feelings about
U-of-M, but most of the
in-state students were born
and bred with that rivalry,
and within a few months, the
vitriol for the school in Ann
Arbor wore off on me.
My first love in the sports
world, though, is the Chicago
Cubs. The Cubs and Cardinals
have a longstanding
rivalry, but until the last few
years the level of play on
either side was so lopsided,
it was mostly just a friendly
recognition of two historic
franchises. And obviously
sharing the city with the
White Sox creates a natural
rivalry between the two, but
aside from friends arguing in
bars about whether Michael
Kopech could strike Anthony
Rizzo out, the two teams
mostly just coexist.
They clash only four or
six times per season, which I
find to be the least enjoyable
games of the year, because
it brings out non-baseball
fans on both sides who just
want to get into fights on
Facebook.
I also had the pleasure of
seeing a budding rivalry between
the Cubs and Milwaukee
Brewers firsthand this
past weekend. The Brewers
were surprise contenders
last year, and threw multiple
CONTACT
anti-Cubs stones during the
offseason, including holding
a presale for tickets to games
against the Cubs for Wisconsin
residents only in an effort
to lessen the Wrigley North
effect of so many Cubs
fans filling their stadium. It
takes more than a year and a
couple of cheeky tweets by
team Twitter accounts to create
a real rivalry, but if both
teams continue to compete
in the division in the coming
years, who knows what can
happen.
But what got me thinking
about all this rivalry talk was
a story on Page 37 in this
week’s issue that spotlights
Lockport Township High
School softball player Tara
McElligott and the rest of
the softball team. They lost
just five games last year, but
three of those losses came
to conference rival Lincoln-
Way East, including one
that knocked them out of the
playoffs.
The Porters have lost their
last nine games against the
Griffins, so they would like
nothing more than to take
them down.
Lockport will get its first
shot at East Friday, April 13,
and I’m sure there will be
just a little more pep in the
step of the Lockport players
during that one. And no matter
the outcome of that game,
or the rest of the season, the
rivalry will live on. That is
why sports are such a beautiful
thing.
Lockport family plays important role in youth running program
Jacquelyn Schlabach
Assistant Editor
The Esquivels from Lockport
all have one thing in
common: running.
Robert participates in halfmarathons
and marathons,
and his wife, Rebecca, joins
him on Saturdays for their
running club. In the last
year, their 5-year-old daughter,
Graysen, began to follow
in their footsteps and lace
up her own sneakers to participate
in the Healthy Kids
Running Series in Homer
Glen.
The series, which features
five races over five weeks,
began Sunday, April 8, and
will continue for the next four
Sundays at Stonebridge Park.
“My husband was running
marathons and half-marathons,
and [Graysen] loved
to go watch,” Rebecca said.
“She always runs with him
to get his medal, so she’ll
run the last 75 feet or so,
whatever she can. So when
[the Healthy Kids Running
Series] came up, it was like,
‘This is yours, you can do
this for yourself,’ and she
loved it.”
Graysen participated in
the series’ inaugural year in
Homer Glen in 2017, competing
and winning her division
in the 50-yard dash.
Children in pre-K run the
50-yard dash, while kindergartners
and first-graders run
a quarter of a mile. Secondand-third-grade
students run
a half mile, with the fourthand
fifth-graders running a
full mile.
“I know when I was a kid,
it was always, ‘Well, when
you’re older;’ everything
was for when you were older,”
Rebecca said. “We were
in sports, but just things like
running, running races and
stuff that was more for when
you got older. I think just instilling
that in a lifestyle in
The trophies designed for this year’s Healthy Kids Running
Series will go to the top finisher in each age division at the
end of the five races.
a family environment makes
it something that’ll stay with
them forever that it’s got to
be done.”
Homer Glen resident Cindy
Flores is the community
coordinator for the event
and helped get it started last
year. The series is held twice
a year, once in the spring,
and once in the fall. In 2017,
there were 130 children who
participated between both.
Currently, there are about 70
children signed up for this
year’s spring series.
“The kids love it, and I
just wanted to provide an
opportunity for them to be
healthy and experience running
and get excited about
it,” Flores said.
Flores, an avid runner
herself, is excited to see the
same children return from
last year and see the progress
they have made since they
Five-year-old Graysen Esquivel crosses the finish line at the spring 2017 Healthy Kids
Running Series race held in Homer Glen. Photos submitted
last participated.
“It’s really a way to get
the community together and
get to know people, and you
know, parents love it,” she
said.
The Healthy Kids Running
Series has brought the Esquivel
family together, as Rebecca,
Robert and their two
older children, 14-year-old,
Brayden, and 16-year-old,
Sebastian, volunteer together
to help put on the races.
“Cindy and her husband
put so much work into this
already, just to hold it, and
we’re so grateful that she
does do it,” Rebecca said.
“If we’re there anyway, we
might as well help out, if
they need it.”
The family will help with
timing the races, setting up
the course and registering
children the day of the race.
“We always need volunteers
— always,” Flores said.
Those who volunteer can
also get service hours for
helping out with the Healthy
Kids Running Series.
Among the various tasks the
Esquivels help out with, volunteers
will also direct the
children along the routes and
lead stretching exercises before
each division race.
At the end of the fifth race
in the series, parents are welcome
to participate in a free,
one-mile race, where their
children can cheer them on
from the sidelines. Graysen’s
father, Robert, did just
that last spring and fall.
“For [Graysen], [running]
is us,” Rebecca said. “This is
what we do. She doesn’t really
know anything different
than that, because we’ve always
done it that way.”
Parents can register their
children online at www.
healthykidsrunningseries.
org/race_locations/homerglen-il-2/.
The cost is $35
for the whole series, or $10
per race.
“It’s a lot of work for just
those five days, but [Flores]
does a great job with it,” Rebecca
said.

The Dish
Chuy’s Tex-Mex offers a different kind of fusion
Amanda Stoll, Assistant Editor
True or False? Traditional
Mexican tacos are served
topped with cheese?
If you guessed true, you
would be wrong according
to Jose Salazar, general
manager at Chuy’s in Orland
Park.
Lucky for those cheeselovers
out there, Chuy’s
serves both traditional and
Texan-inspired dishes, and
some with a little bit of both.
The chain started in Austin,
Texas in 1982 and has
nearly 100 locations, mostly
spread across the South,East
Coast and Central Great
Plains.
Hallmarks of the chain
include a nacho car, a
self-serve nacho bar situated
in the trunk of a Buick
1958,and the chihuahua bar,
where visitors can bring a
framed picture of their dogs
to hang up and receive a free
appetizer to boot.
Salazar said last week
there were almost 300 pups
adorning the walls and bar
area, but he is hoping to get
that number up to at least
1,000.
One room is reserved as
the hubcap room, where the
ceiling in the original location
was painted purple, and
— because of the owners’
displeasure with the color —
consequently covered with a
variety of hubcaps.
Upon closer inspection,
the iconic purple paint can
be seen between the gleaming
hubcaps at the Orland
Park location.
Many of the same things
can be found at all Chuy’s
locations — including the
menu, nacho car, chihuahua
bar, indoor palm tree decor
and hubcap room — but the
artwork adorning the walls,
the design and layout are
unique to each location.
Most of the decor in the
restaurant is brought in from
Mexico, where Salazar said
the company tries to support
local artists, including
those who have been making
the more than 1,000 handcarved
wooden fish on the
ceiling in the bar area.
Chuy’s opened March 27,
and so far Salazar said the
Chicka-Chicka Boom-Boom
chicken enchiladas ($12.29)
have been among the most
popular menu items. He said
what sets the dish apart are
the fresh ingredients, inhouse
roasted chicken and,
of course, the Boom-Boom
sauce.
The Boom-Boom sauce,
one of a variety of sauce options
at Chuy’s, is made with
cheese, roasted New Mexican
green chiles, tomatillos,
green onions, cilantro and
lime juice, as well as some
“secret spices.”
The creamy jalapeño
sauce, although originally
served as only a salad dressing,
has become a favorite,
Salazar added. It is a ranchbased
sauce with a jalapeno
kick, and people put it on everything
from tortilla chips
to burritos and tacos.
Chuy’s even sells the
creamy jalapeño sauce in
32-ounce take-home containers
for those who cannot
live without it.
Their burritos ‘big as
yo’face,’ tacos, house specialties
and enchiladas are
served with freshly cooked
Mexican or green chile rice,
and house-made refried orcharro
beans.
Their burritos are made
with homemade tortillas
stuffed with refried beans
and cheese ($9.99), seasoned
ground sirloin ($10.29), oven-roasted
chicken ($11.29),
or fajita chicken or beef
($11.99).
The Elvis Green Chile
Fried Chicken ($12.29) is
a popular Chuy’s original
recipe, featuring a chicken
breast breaded with Lay’s
potato chips, deep fried and
topped with green chile
sauce and cheddar sauce.
Chuy’s connection to The
King includes a small shrine
within the restaurant and an
annual celebration in January,
during which patrons
who dress up as Elvis or
Priscilla Presley eat for free.
Happy Hour at Chuy’s is
from 4-7p.m. Monday-Friday,
when visits to the nacho
car are free of charge.
Happy Hour also features
drink specials including traditional
or strawberry house
ritas ($5.95) served frozen,
on the rocks and made with
fresh squeezed lime juice; the
grande house ritas ($8.95),
served in a pint glass with
1800 Silver tequila and extra
Grand Marnier; the house
Texas martinis ($9.75), made
with top-shelf premium tequila
and a choice of Cointreau,
Grand Marnier, or
Patron Citronge, and served
with jalapeño-stuffed olives;
and domestic beers ($4).
Other specialty drinks on
the menu at Chuy’s include
the Chuy’s Brew, a frozen
lime margarita topped with
a 7-ounce Corona, and seasonal
sangrias made with
fresh fruit.
Salazar said Chuy’s regularly
partners with local
organizations such as The
Bridge Teen Center in Orland
Park and area schools
for fundraisers.
Distinctive Home Builders Introduces New Craftsman Home Series
At Prairie Trails in Manhattan and WestGate Manor in Peotone!
Two new designs (with more to follow) are a direct result of buyer feedback
Two refreshing designs mark
the beginning of a new series
of Craftsman-style homes
available from Distinctive Home
Builders at its latest new home
communities: Prairie Trails;
located in Manhattan within the
highly-regarded Lincoln-Way
School District and at WestGate
Manor in Peotone within
the desirable Peotone School
District.
“Craftsman homes were
introduced in the early 1900s
in California with designs
based on a simpler, functional
aesthetic using a higher level
of craftsmanship and natural
materials. These homes were a
departure from homes that were
mass produced from that era,
“according to Bryan Nooner,
president of Distinctive Home
Builders.
“The Craftsman design has
made a comeback today for
many of the same reasons it
started over a century ago. Our
customers want to live in a home
that gets away from the “mass
produced” look and live in a
home that has more character. As
a result of our daily interaction
with our homeowners and their
input, we are excited to introduce
these two homes, with additional
designs in the works.”
Nooner, who meets with
each homeowner prior to
construction, has been working
on these plans for a while and felt
that the timing was ideal for the
debut. “Customers were asking
for something different and
simple with less monotony and
higher architectural standards.”
The result was the Craftsman
ranch and the Prairie twostory,
now available at Prairie
Trails and WestGate Manor.
The Craftsman ranch features
an open floor plan with Great
Room, three bedrooms, two
baths and a two-car (optional
three-car) garage. The Prairie
features a two-story foyer and
Great Room, three bedrooms
and one and one-half baths, a
convenient Flex Room space
on the main level and a two-car
(optional three-car) garage. The
Craftsman architectural elements
on both homes include brick and
stone exteriors with cedar shake
accent siding, low-pitched gabled
bracket roofs, front porches with
tapered columns and stone piers,
partially paned windows, and a
standard panel front entry door.
Distinctive Home Builders
offers a Craftsman-style trim
package offering trim without
ornate profiles and routers. The
trim features simplicity in design
with rectangles, straight lines and
layered look trims over doors for
example. The front entry door
will have the standard Craftsman
panel style door. Distinctive has
also created a Craftsman color
palate to assist buyers in making
coordinated choices for the
interior of their new Craftsman
home. Colors, cabinet styles and
flooring choices blend seamlessly
with the Craftsman trim package
and are available in gray tones
package and earth tones.
Distinctive offers custom maple
kitchen cabinets featuring solid
wood construction (no particle
board), have solid wood drawers
with dove tail joints, which is
very rare in the marketplace.
“When you buy a new home
from Distinctive, you truly are
receiving custom made cabinets
in every home we sell no matter
what the price range,” noted
Nooner.
Distinctive Home Builders
works to achieve a delivery goal
of 90 days with zero punch list
items for its homeowners. “Our
three decades building homes
provides an efficient construction
system,” said Nooner. “Many of
our skilled craftsmen have been
working with our company
for over 20 years. We also
take pride on having excellent
communicators throughout our
organization. This translates into
a positive buying and building
experience for our homeowners
and one of the highest referral
rates in the industry.”
Nooner added that all homes
are highly energy efficient. Every
home built will have upgraded
wall and ceiling insulation
values with energy efficient
windows and high efficiency
furnaces. Before homeowners
move into their new home,
Distinctive Home Builders
conducts a blower door test that
pressurizes the home to ensure
that each home passes a set of
very stringent Energy Efficiency
guidelines.
With the addition of these two
new designs, there are now 15
ranch, split-level and six twostory
single-family home styles to
choose from each offering from
three to eight different exterior
elevations at both communities.
The three- to four-bedroom
homes feature one and one-half
to two-and-one-half baths, twoto
three-car garages and a family
room, all in approximately 1,600
to over 3,000 square feet of living
space. Basements are included in
most models as well. Distinctive
also encourages customization
to make your new home truly
personalized to suit your lifestyle.
Oversize home sites; brick
exteriors on all four sides of the
first floor; custom maple cabinets;
ceramic tile or hardwood
floors in the kitchen, baths and
foyer; genuine wood trim and
doors and concrete driveways
can all be yours at Prairie
Trails and WestGate Manor.
Most all home sites at Prairie
Trails and WestGate Manor
can accommodate a three-car
garage; a very important amenity
to the Manhattan homebuyer,
said Nooner.
“When we opened Prairie
Trails and WestGate Manor we
wanted to provide the best new
home value for the dollar and
we feel with offering Premium
Standard Features that we do
just that. So why wait? This is
truly the best time to build your
dream home!”
Prairie Trails is also a beautiful
place to live and raise a family
featuring a 20-acre lake on site,
as well as direct access to the 22-
mile Wauponsee Glacial Prairie
Path that borders the community
and meanders through many
neighboring communities and
links to many other popular
trails. The Manhattan Metra
station is less than a mile away.
Besides Prairie Trails,
Distinctive Home Builders
has built homes throughout
Manhattan in the Butternut
Ridge and Leighlinbridge
developments, as well as in the
Will and south Cook county
areas over the past 30 years.
Distinctive Home Builders
chose the Will County village
of Peotone for its newest
community of 38 single-family
homes at WestGate Manor
within walking distance of the
esteemed Peotone High School.
Its convenient location between
Interstate 57 and Illinois Route
50 provide easy access to I-80
and commuters enjoy several
nearby train stations and a
35-minute drive to Chicago.
JEFF VORVA, Contributing Editor
Providence Catholic’s
unprecedented baseball
title reign ended last year
when Sandburg knocked the
Celtics off at the Class 4A
Homewood-Flossmoor Sectional.
The Celtics had a postseason
23-game winning
streak snapped. They had
won three consecutive state
titles, which had never been
done before in the history of
the Illinois High School Association.
If the Celtics want to win
another state title in 2018,
they have a rough road,
which includes many area
teams standing in the way.
The IHSA announced its assignments,
and the Celtics,
plus six other 22nd Century
Media teams, will duke it
out in the 21-team Lockport
Sectional. Lockport,
Lincoln-Way East, Lincoln-
Way Central, Lincoln-Way
West, Sandburg and Andrew
are also in the mix. Providence
is the only area team
that will host a regional.
Other teams in the sectional
are Eisenhower,
Marist, Bloom, Marian,
Crete-Monee, Homewood-
Flossmoor, Thornton, Joliet
Central, Joliet West, Thornton
Fractional South, Shepard,
Stagg, Romeoville and
Thornwood.
In the April 2 edition of the
Prep Baseball Report state
rankings, six teams from the
Lockport Sectional are in the
top 25. Lincoln-Way East
was ranked sixth, Andrew
13th, Lockport 14th, Sandburg
17th, Providence 22nd
and Marist 25th. That means
at least two of those teams
will not win one of the four
regional titles.
In Class 3A, Tinley Park is
in the 10-team sub-sectional
of the Ottawa Sectional. The
Titans are joined by Thornton
Fractional North, Chicago
Agricultural Science,
Morgan Park, Hillcrest, Evergreen
Park, Illiana Christian,
Lemont, Bremen and
Oak Forest.
Seeds will be announced
on May 8. The regionals
begin May 21 and the state
finals are June 8-9.
Athlete of the Week
10 Questions
with Lauren Pikulski
Lauren Pikulski is a senior
at Lockport Township. She
has played a variety of positions
for the Porters on the
soccer team.
The team is 3-3-1
[through April 3]. How
would you say the season
has started out?
It’s been hard to adjust
losing all our [six] seniors
from last season. It’s been
like one thing to another. We
either have a good game or a
bad game.
So far, the team has
either won with a shutout,
lost with a shutout
or tied 0-0. What do
you have to do to turn
that trend back in your
favor?
Our heads just go down
after the first goal that we
give up. We just have to focus
and push hard through
the whole game. We seem
to shut down after giving up
a goal, so scoring first is so
important.
What position are you
currently playing?
I started out as the center
back on defense but moved to
forward after a few games. I
like moving around. It makes
everything fun. Sometimes,
it’s hard to adjust to the positions,
but I will play wherever
they need me to.
How long have you
been playing soccer?
I started playing when I
was 8. I first played at the
rec level in Homer. Then, I
played club with the Homer
Hawks and with Chicago
Inter. It was my cousin, Emily
Sanchez, that first helped
push me to play soccer.
Have you played any
other sports?
No, I really haven’t played
other sports. But I did run
track and cross country at
Homer Jr. High. In fact,
I went to state in track in
the 100-meter dash and
the 100-meter hurdles. But
when I got to high school,
I decided to just keep going
with soccer.
What is it about soccer
that makes it the sport
for you?
It’s so competitive. It just
brings out the side in me that
I usually don’t see. It gives
me a chance to change my
persona. Plus, it still has the
aspect of running in it.
Do you have any pregame
rituals or something
you do for motivation?
Yes. I love to put on the
headphones and listen to
some country songs. Some
of my teammates don’t like
it, but I love to jam out to
country. I like Rascal Flatts
and Luke Bryan, especially
his song, “Most People Are
Good.”
What have you learned
from Lockport soccer
coach Todd Elkei?
He’s taught me a lot on
Photo submitted
and off the field. He’s taught
me confidence, and he’s got
me to come out of my shell.
I’ve grown a lot in that confidence
aspect because of
him.
Are you going to play
soccer in college?
Yes, I am. I already signed
with Moraine Valley Community
College. I plan to
major in education. I will be
playing there for two years
and see what happens from
there. Two of our players
from last year [Brooke Janeczek
and Sylvia Kordaczka]
are playing there. The team
did great last season [advancing
to the NJCAA Division
I Championship before losing],
so I’m really excited.
What is the best thing
about being an athlete
at Lockport?
All the teams support each
other. I’ve made so many
friends throughout high
school, and everyone on the
teams all get along.
Softball
McElligott set to lead powerful Porters offense this season
Max Lapthorne, Editor
Batting average and home
runs tend to be the most
popular lines on a softball
box score, but it’s the more
team-oriented RBI and runs
scored categories where
Lockport’s senior first baseman
focuses her attention.
Tara McElligott, a fouryear
varsity player for the
Porters, was one of the catalysts
for a juggernaut offense
last season that carried
Lockport to a 31-5 record.
For her part, McElligott was
responsible for 118 runs in
just 36 games, including 73
RBI, which is tied for 15th
most in a single season in Illinois
history, according to
the IHSA website.
She also maintained a batting
average above .500 and
mashed 11 home runs, but
the RBI and runs scored are
more important to McElligott
because they serve as
a barometer for her team’s
success.
“Those can’t get done
without those girls getting
on and doing their job in
front of me,” McElligott
said of her lofty RBI total.
“I can’t hit them in unless
they’re there.”
RBI opportunities should
be plentiful for McElligott
and others again this season,
as the Porters return eight
starters from last year’s team,
including two other four-year
varsity players in catcher
Gracie Voulgaris and shortstop
Courtney Schoolcraft.
“They have the most experience,
so from that perspective
they are definitely
leaders,” Lockport coach
Marissa Chovanec said of
McElligott, Voulgaris and
Schoolcraft.
In the early going, the
Lockport offense has lived
up to the hype, scoring 55 total
runs in its first five games
of the season. McElligott has
Lockport senior first baseman Tara McElligott looks out at the field during last year’s loss to Lincoln-Way East in the sectional
title game. 22nd Century Media File Photo
done her fair share of damage
in the early going, contributing
7 RBI and three long
balls. It’s no coincidence she
has gone deep three times already
this season, as one of
her goals for this season was
to hit for more power early
in the season.
“I just want to start hitting
[home runs] earlier in the
season, because a lot of them
came toward the middle or
the end [of last season]...
Just start that early and increase
my power numbers,”
McElligott said of her focus
at the plate this year.
Before she was a staple in
the heart of the LTHS lineup,
McElligott was just trying to
follow in the footsteps of her
older cousin, Lia Romeo,
who was a team captain for
the Porters softball team in
2010-2011.
“I always looked up to her,
so that’s how I started to get
into softball,” McElligott
said of Romeo.
In addition to starring for
the Porters just like her cousin,
McElligott also plays for
the Beverly Bandits travel
team, as Romeo did before
going off to play at Western
Illinois University. But starting
next year, McElligott will
be donning a jersey her cousin
never wore — the blue and
red of the University of Illinois
at Chicago Flames.
Like many of her teammates
on the Beverly Bandits,
McElligott made her
college decision during her
sophomore year. Schools
such as Eastern Kentucky,
Valparaiso and Eastern
Michigan offered to host her
on visits, but she found everything
she was looking for
in a college right in Chicago.
“Everything there was the
perfect fit,” she said.
The size of the school’s
medical school, which is the
field McElligott plans to pursue,
was among the qualities
that attracted her to the
school, but one of the largest
factors in her decision had
nothing to do with herself.
“For both my parents to
commit themselves to me,
putting everything they have
into me to get me to where
I am, and they can drive 45
minutes to come watch me
play… That was probably
the biggest thing,” she said.
Naturally, her parents, Teresa
and Gerry, were satisfied
with the decision.
“It means the world to
both of us that she wanted to
stay close for us to be there
to watch her,” Teresa said.
“... As a parent, I’m just ecstatic
to watch her go out
and play a game she loves
to play. She’s got such passion
for the game, and win or
lose at the end of the day, she
gives 110 percent.”
While McElligott looks
forward to continuing her
softball career with the
Flames, she is firmly focused
on making this year at LTHS
one to be remembered. To do
that though, the Porters will
likely have to find a way to
beat last year’s state runnerup
and conference rival Lincoln-Way
East. None of the
players on Lockport’s roster
have ever beaten the Griffins
on the varsity level, as East
has topped Lockport the last
nine times the teams have
squared off, including in last
year’s sectional title game.
“For a lot of the seniors,
that’s the biggest goal besides
going to state,” McElligott
said of beating East.
“We haven’t beat them in
our three previous years
here. We’ve gotten close; we
took them to extras and we
lost by one hit. We get close
every time, it’s just that final
push through.”
While many of the players
on the Lockport team have
had the Friday, April 13,
matchup with East circled
on their calendar, Chovanec
wants her team to bring intensity
to the field no matter
who is in the other dugout.
“Every opponent needs to
be a Lincoln-Way East,” she
said. “That mental approach
to every game needs to be
there. We need to consistently
show up to play every
day, and when we do that, I
think the outcome will work
in our favor.”
A key to beating the Griffins
and making a deep postseason
run will be the ability
of the Porters to manufacture
runs when they encounter an
elite starting pitcher, which
is something they struggled
with last year, according to
McElligott. To combat that,
Chovanec has her players
focused on refining their
mental approach at the plate,
instilling in them a sense of
duty to advance runners as
opposed to thinking about
getting a hit for themselves.
“There’s a lot of different
ways you can move runners,
and that’s their job,” Chovanec
said. “... Looking at
ways that we can manufacture
runs in that situation when
we’re facing a pitcher of that
caliber is definitely something
we’re working on.”
If McElligott and her
teammates continue putting
up the type of numbers they
did last year and in the early
going this season, and can
find a way to get over the
hump against their conference
rival, this season could
take them all the way to the
state finals in East Peoria
— and that’s exactly how
McElligott sees it playing
out.
“I think this is the best
shot we’re going to have to
make it down to state, and
I think it’s definitely in the
cards,” she said.

Pair of wins last week has team going in right direction
Randy Whalen
Freelance Reporter
A season of improvement
continued last week for the
Lockport Township girls
water polo team.
The Porters got a pair of
big wins and continued to
make a splash this season.
In the first win, they showed
they could turn it on offensively
and play tenacious
defense as they rallied from
an early three goal deficit to
hammer Hinsdale Central
17-8 on April 3 at Lockport.
With the win, Lockport
(6-3 at that point) already
reached half the number of
victories it had all of last
season when it finished 12-
17. The Porters hope to at
least reverse that record this
season as they continue to
improve.
“We just work better together,”
sophomore Emily
Plaszewski said of the
difference on this season’s
team. “We’ve communicated
better and made better
passes. Plus everyone can
score.”
A half dozen players
scored for the Porters
against Hinsdale Central.
Plaszewski and senior Kennedy
Ruther led the way
with five goals apiece. Senior
Emily Adelman, junior
Francesca Brunetti and
senior Riley Klimek each
added a pair of goals while
junior Sarah Pawlik also tallied
one. Junior goal keeper
Kaya Nasinska made nine
saves.
While things started out
well with a pair of goals for
Lockport, they soon turned
as the Red Devils scored
three times in the final two
minutes of the first quarter to
take a 3-2 lead. When senior
Helen Smith (2 goals) and
freshman Katrina Geiersbach
(3 goals) scored twice
to open the second quarter,
the Porters called a timeout
with 5:04 left in the half.
“One of the things we’ve
been working on is making
adjustments in games and
obviously an adjustment
had to be made,” Lockport
coach Rick De Leon said of
what happened during the
key timeout. “I went to the
bench and the girls made
the adjustments. Our passes
got faster and we have plenty
of shooters.”
Brunetti started the goal
parade with a score on a
breakaway lob over the
head of senior goalkeeper
Antonia Ioannou. Ruther
routed her way for two
goals, Adelman scored from
long range, Ruther rammed
another home and Brunetti
broke away for another goal
with 16 seconds left in the
half to put the Porters ahead
8-5 at intermission.
“Emily and Kennedy
work well together,” De
Leon said. “Things opened
up for us [in the second
Kaya Nasinska stops a shot in goal for the Porters.
quarter] when we had were
shooting in the deep end
and had more time to take
the goalie.”
Three more Porter goals
opened the third quarter
before Hinsdale Central
scored for the first time in
nearly nine minutes on a
breakaway by senior Sophia
Jones. But Adelman’s
aim from three-fourth of the
way across the pool for a
goal with only four seconds
left gave Lockport a 15-7
lead after three.
The Red Devils (4-5) also
received goals from seniors
Maddie Fowler and Maggie
Neil.
“The girls are transferring
a lot of their skills this
season and a huge thing has
been communicating,” De
Leon said. “There’s a lot of
consistency there and that
bond they have is huge for
us.”
Brunetti agreed.
“We’ve been playing together
a long time and we’re
definitely ranked higher
than ever,” Brunetti said
of the Porters ranking No.
26 ranking at Illpolo. We
feel we can make it past the
first games of the sectional.
Once we get in a rhythm,
we have to keep it going.”
Since the inception of the
Porter program, they have
made the sectional semifinals
twice. That was in 2012
and 2013.
Lockport ended last week
on Thursday, April 5, by
traveling to St. Charles East
for another nonconference
matchup against a team
ranked five spots ahead of
it. There, the Porters hung
on for a crucial 10-9 win.
Ruther led the way with five
goals while Plaszewski and
senior Kayley Uy each had
five steals. Nasinska made
14 saves as the Porters (7-3)
pulled out the big win.
St. Charles East (7-4-1)
scored the final two goals,
but couldn’t get the equalizer.
“Yes, this was a huge
win,” De Leon said following
the St. Charles East victory.
“We won each swim
off, led each quarter, and
played great defense. We
were up 10-7 in the fourth
quarter and they scored two
goals in the last two minutes,
but we held on.”
1. Staging a rally
The Lockport girls
water polo team fell
behind Hinsdale
Central by three
goals before mounting
a comeback and
winning by a 17-8
margin April 3 at its
home pool.
2. Plenty of scoring
The Porters had six
scorers in the match
versus Hinsdale
Central. Emily
Plaszewski and Kennedy
Ruther had five
goals apiece. Emily
Adelman, Francesca
Brunetti and Riley
Klimek had two
goals, while Sarah
Pawlik had one.
3. Maintaining momentum
Last season, the Lockport
Township boys volleyball
team lost six matches.
After 11 matches this season,
Lockport had lost six
times.
But that doesn’t matter,
as the Porters feel they are a
better team because of it.
“We could be 18-18,
but if we’re putting up regional
and sectional titles,
it doesn’t matter,” Lockport
coach Nick Mraz said of his
team’s goals for the end of
the season.
The Porters had a tough go
of it March 30 and 31 at the
Wheaton-Warrenville South
Tiger Classic. There, they
hoped to break through with
a good performance in their
first season in the prestigious
tournament. Instead, they
lost their first four matches
to fall to a losing record for
the first time this late in the
season since 2013.
But they rallied for a
25-19, 25-21 victory over
Andrew in the final match
of the tourney. Then Lockport
returned to its winning
ways last week with a pair
of victories, including kicking
it off with a 25-13, 25-20
victory over Joliet Catholic
Academy on April 2 to get
back over the .500 mark for
what they hope is for good.
“We just had to use that
invite to grow, since we
competed with the best of
the state,” Mraz said of the
Tiger Classic. “Three of our
four losses there went to
three sets, and two of those
three were 23-25. So we
were right there, and that’s
just going to make us that
much better.
“Our schedule is very
tough to start the year, but
now as we move forward,
there should be some confidence
there. This is a quality
area, so every night will
be tough, but I thought we
played well [against JCA]
and played with some confidence
and finished better.”
After cruising in the opener
against JCA, the Porters
jumped out to an 18-8 lead
in the second set and looked
to cruise again. The Hilltoppers
(3-4), who have a new
head coach in Lockport resident
Ryan Vozenilek, didn’t
go quietly, as they fought
back to within 23-20. But
Lockport scored the final
two points, including the
match winner on a push kill
by senior setter/opposite
side hitter Anthony Pfeiffer
(9 assists, 7 kills, 5 aces).
“We got to play really
high-level teams, which
was great,” Pfeiffer said of
the WWS Tournament. “We
lost some, but it was always
close, so I feel like with
more practice and playing
other competitive teams, that
“It’s been a long process. Now, we
just have to prove what we have, and
that’s what this year is all about.”
Anthony Pfeiffer — Lockport senior setter/opposite
side hitter
we’ll move our level up with
them. It’s good to get matches
like that out of the way in
the beginning, because good
teams exposed our weaknesses.
I’m happy that we’re
finally getting recognition.
“It’s been a long process.
Now, we just have to prove
what we have, and that’s
what this year is all about.
Everyone cares about the
team, since they want us to
do our best.”
Junior Samien Alvarez,
along with senior Kyle Dixon,
each had three kills at
outside hitter for Lockport in
the JCA match. Sophomore
Jacob Prince contributed
seven assists from his newly
found setter position. Senior
outside hitter Patrick Surane
added eight digs. Middle/
opposite side hitter Michael
Palumbo is the other senior
for the Porters.
“We had a lot of good
things going and went three
games with some super good
teams, but couldn’t finish
the games,” Surane said
of the Porters at the WWS
Tourney. “There were some
lulls in our offense, defense
and serve-receive that we
need to fix. But it gave us a
good look at who the best
teams are, and seeing that
we could compete with [Lincoln-Way]
East [25-22, 23-
25, 25-16 loss to the eventual
third-place Griffins in
pool play on March 30] was
promising.
“We have a lot of young
guys [6 juniors, 2 sophomores
and a freshman], so
after a few more practices
and more games, our team
will come together a lot better.
We have a lot of good
power hitters, so if we can
get our serve-receive down,
we’ll be hard to stop.”
Even with its 31 wins last
year, Lockport didn’t win
a regional. Lincoln-Way
Central knocked the Porters
out in the regional title
match 17-25, 25-15, 25-20
at Plainfield Central. The
four seniors remember that
and would love to get the
program’s first regional title
since 2004 on their home
court at the end of May.
“This is it for these four,
and they want to finish the
job,” Mraz said. “It doesn’t
seem like it, but we are a
young team, since we only
have four seniors. It’s just
those four seniors are a big
part of the team, and they’ve
played on some great teams.
So, they’re going to be passing
the torch and want to
make sure that they end this
year strong, so that’s extra
motivation. They expect to
win — not hope to win —
and are angry that we aren’t
where we should be. That
stuff goes a long way.”
Later in the week, on April
4, the Porters traveled to Oak
Forest and came away with a
25-18, 25-22 victory. Lockport
(8-6) was led by Dixon
(9 kills) and Prince (4 aces,
6 assists).
It was the latest in a matchup
of old coaching friends.
Mraz and Bengals coach Lee
Rucinski, who also coaches
the Tinley Park girls volleyball
team, coached together
at Oak Forest seven
years ago. This is now the
fifth year they have coached
against each other.
This week, Lockport was
to host Plainfield South on
April 9 and was scheduled
to travel to Richards for another
monconference matchup
at 5:30 p.m. on April 11.
This Saturday, April 14, is to
bring a trip to Streamwood
High School for the Sabre
Invite, starting at 9 a.m.
Next week, the Porters
have a special match at 6
p.m. on Thursday, April 19,
as they face Joliet West at
Lewis University in Romeoville.
LISTEN UP
“We just work better together. We’ve
communicated better and made better passes.
Plus, everyone can score.”
