Orland Park Bitcoin ATM causing
social disruption at The Black Sheep
Rochelle McAuliffe
Freelance Reporter
The Black Sheep is the only location in Orland Park known
to have Bitcoin ATM, pictured here.
Bill Jones/22nd Century Media
For The Black Sheep in
Orland Park, it is one thing
to sound like you are changing
the game, but it is a whole
other thing to do it.
Formerly Zante of Orland,
The Black Sheep opened under
its new name in December
2015, and from the eclectic
food to its wacky themed
nights, this social distortion is
doing what it can to separate
itself from the flock.
In February, the bar joined
the cryptocurrency movement
and installed an ATM
that instantly converts cash to
digital coins. Since installing
the only Bitcoin ATM in Orland
Park, it has drawn new
customers and even Bitcoin
investors to the bar.
The ATM transforms cash
into a digital currency called
Bitcoins. This cryptocurrency
operates independently of
a central bank, with no government
intervention, and
allows users to make direct,
instantaneous transactions
with no fees. There are other
kinds of cryptocurrencies, as
well, such as Ethereum and
Litecoin.
To purchase cryptocurrency,
one begins with a
one-time registration with
the ATM. Then, a SMS text
code is sent to a cellphone
to verify identity. Customers
are asked to take a selfie and
scan a valid, governmentissued
ID. After that, a text
confirms the registration has
been completed. The customer
then can buy between $20
and $500 worth of cryptocurrency.
After purchasing, the
currency is downloaded to
the customer’s wallet.
Purchasing through an
ATM allows consumers to buy
cryptocurrency in a quicker
and more discrete way than a
coin exchange, such as Coinbase.
Rather than linking their
bank accounts and having to
wait 48-72 hours, the entire
process usually takes 3-5 minutes
and transfers the cryptocurrency
to the customer’s
wallet quickly.
Since the ATM’s installation
at the bar a month ago,
it has seen its fair amount of
use. The biggest explosion of
crypto trading happened late
last year, and since there has
been a decline in the value of
cryptocurrencies across the
board. Despite this, investors
are still following rates closely
and using ATMs to instantaneously
make the most of
their investments.
At present, most Bitcoin
ATMs are found in convenience
stores, petrol stations
and food stores. However,
The Black Sheep restaurant
and bar offers a unique location
compared to other Bitcoin
ATMs, though the bar
currently does not accept
Bitcoin.
“I liked The Black Sheep,
because it’s a busy location
with long hours,” said Sabreen
Rihan of CryptoDispensers.com,
the group that
manages The Black Sheep’s
ATM.
While The Black Sheep
may hold the only Bitcoin
ATM in Orland Park, the
number of machines in the
area only continues to grow.
There are nearly 2,500 ATMs
worldwide, more than 130 in
the Chicagoland area, giving
it one of the highest concentrations
of where to buy Bitcoin
worldwide.
Trustees open discussion
about reverting mayoral
role to part-time status
Jon DePaolis
Freelance Reporter
The days of a full-time
mayor in Orland Park may
be on borrowed time.
During the Finance Committee
meeting April 2, three
Village Board members forwarded
an item — without
a recommendation — to the
full Village Board for discussion
and possible action
that could revert the fulltime
Village president position
back to a part-time position
after the 2021 election.
The three members of
the committee are trustees
Michael Carroll, Dan Calandriello
and Patricia Gira,
who asked for the item to be
placed on the April 2 committee
meeting agenda.
During the meeting, Gira
said there has been a lot of
discussion — and confusion
— regarding the role of the
full-time position.
“It is very difficult without
clearly outlined parameters
for the full-time position
versus the part-time mayor’s
position,” Gira said. “We’re
not clear on it, and I don’t
think anyone has a good understanding
of it.”
Carroll, the committee
chairman, said he checked
with the Village clerk’s office
to confirm that Mayor
Keith Pekau was sworn in
May 15, 2017. To give it a
full year to see “the effectiveness
of our ordinance,”
Carroll suggested sending it
to the board level for discussion
on May 21.
Calandriello agreed with
Carroll about having the
conversation May 21.
“It is very difficult without clearly
outlined parameters for the fulltime
position versus the part-time
mayor’s position. We’re not clear
on it, and I don’t think anyone has
a good understanding of it.”
Patricia Gira — Orland Park trustee, on what she
thinks has led to some problems with the full-time
mayoral change
Gira asked why it could
not happen at the next board
meeting April 16 but said
she would support having
the discussion on May 21
if that is what the other two
trustees wanted.
The committee members
voted 3-0 to send the item to
the Village Board without a
recommendation for discussion
and possible action May
21.
Trustees elaborate
After the meeting ended
— and prior to the start
of the regularly scheduled
meeting — the three trustees
on the Finance Committee
explained why they felt a
change to the ordinance was
warranted.
Gira reiterated that she
does not think there is a
“clear cut understanding of
the full-time economic development
position and the
part-time mayor position.”
“One does not, I don’t
think, influence the other,”
Gira said. “We still have a
professional management
form of government. We
have a Village manager. We
have professional development
services directors. We
have a professional government.
“What I had envisioned
the economic development
coordinator position [to be]
was going out after businesses
in the [Interstate] 80 corridor,
specifically. Let’s get
some development in there.
That property, we’re told, is
one of the prime locations in
Will County.
“We haven’t seen that
happen, but we still would
like to see that. I hoped that
[mayor] role, because it was
full-time, would certainly
have enough time to devote
themselves to that.”
But Gira said she has not
seen any progress over the
past year.
“I think [the role] is too
conflicted,” Gira said. “Village
Hall isn’t clear on who
is running the day-to-day,
and I believe it should be the
Village manager. That is our
form of government, by ref-

erendum.”
Gira also said the “sunset”
provision, which automatically
would have reverted
the mayoral position back
to a part-time role without
board action for the 2021
election cycle, was removed
prior to the vote — something
about which a few of
the trustees were unaware
at the time. Therefore, the
board members would have
to vote on rolling it back.
For his part, Carroll said
that over the past year, several
board members expressed
opinions on how the
full-time mayor position was
going. He thinks the oneyear
mark is a good time to
review it.
Carroll said the original
intent of the move to a fulltime
mayor was to have
someone outside of the Village
staff who would be able
to spend 100 percent of their
work hours trying to network
with other governmental
agencies and businesses
to spur development.
But he said the reality is
that the Interstate 80 corridor
is something Village Board
members have been talking
about for years. Carroll said
one of the problems with
getting development there
has to do with the property
owners who “do not have a
view as to the value of their
property that encourages
someone to come in to try to
purchase it and develop it.”
“People can yell at us all
day long for not getting it
developed, but we don’t own
the land,” Carroll said. “We
never have owned the land.
So, trying to get developers
and the owner to sit down
and play nice together, despite
our best efforts, hasn’t
worked so far.”
He said that is why, in his
mind, the board members
wanted to get someone who
could commit their full-time
job to helping with that area.
Carroll said it has been
brought up by other board
members to ask the mayor to
show evidence of work done
to get development along
“Either it’s the right thing or it is not the right thing.
They think it was the right thing before, and now it’s
not the right thing, because their guy didn’t win. I
think that’s been pretty clear for the last 10 months.”
Keith Pekau — Orland Park mayor, responding to the suggestion of reverting
the mayor’s role to part-time
I-80, and that it was something
they should ask the
mayor to provide prior to the
May 21 meeting.
Gira added that the mayoral
position is the only position
in the Village not accountable
to anyone.
“I think that is unfortunate,”
Gira said, adding that
is why it was important for
the mayor to report on what
was taking place development-wise.
“We need to be
included in the conversation.”
Gira admitted it could
have been the fault of the
board members for not specifically
putting in parameters
or guidelines on how the
mayor should report back on
the actions or discussions
taking place regarding development.
Gira also wanted to be
clear: the position was for
a part-time mayor, full-time
economic development coordinator.
“And that makes my point
[about] the confusion there
is,” she said. “A full-time
mayor, I think, implies running
the Village’s day-today
operations. That’s just
not the case. That’s our Village
manager.”
When asked if the decision
to review the full-time position
was being considered
because the current mayor
was not the person originally
intended for the role, Gira
said the position change was
an experiment.
“That is a difficult corridor,
no question,” Gira said.
“But if somebody had fulltime
availability to work on
it, and work with the property
owners, and bring in businesses
— not the ones that
call us; that’s the easy stuff
— but bring in businesses
that might be suitable to that
corridor, [so] that we would
be more successful. It hasn’t
happened. Now, maybe it
wouldn’t have happened no
matter who was there. I can’t
say to that, because we don’t
know.”
Carroll also responded to
the question of whether or
not the outlook on the role
would be different if former
Mayor Dan McLaughlin had
been re-elected. He said one
of the things he took away
from the 2017 election was
that it was a single-issue
campaign.
“Clearly, the residents and
voters of Orland Park did
not like the idea of a fulltime
mayor at $153,000 in
salary,” Carroll said. “That
message was sent to us loud
and clear. So, I think to not
revisit that would be foolish
to begin with.
“Secondly, yes, we did
draft an ordinance that was
in large part based on the
skill set of the candidate we
had that we felt could fulfill
those roles. I think some of
the board members have expressed
some concern that
those objectives haven’t
been met. The skill sets of
the two people are completely
different, and that’s not a
knock on [Pekau] personally,
but what I had hoped would
be accomplished based on
the amendment to the ordinance
hasn’t happened.”
Meanwhile, in response
to a question, Calandriello
said the mayor is not legally
obligated to accept the full
salary.
“There is only one person
who can roll back the salary,
and that’s the mayor,”
Calandriello said. “He’s the
only one who has control
over that.”
But Gira said the proposed
ordinance would just scale
back the mayoral position to
being part-time with a parttime
salary of $40,000 after
the 2021 election.
She also said the mayor
had been informed of the ordinance
prior to the meeting.
Pekau responds
Minutes later, Mayor
Keith Pekau was asked his
thoughts on the proposed
ordinance. He denied having
much advance knowledge of
what was being proposed.
“Pat Gira told me she was
going to bring something up
at some point, but that was
it,” Pekau said. “So, I didn’t
know what was going on today.
I didn’t see it.
“I don’t know what they
brought up tonight, so I don’t
know what they were talking
about. But I think it’s pretty
clear that from the beginning
they weren’t too happy with
who won.”
Pekau said he thinks board
members should be “intellectually
consistent” on the
issue.
“Either it’s the right thing
or it is not the right thing,”
he said. “They think it was
the right thing before, and
now it’s not the right thing,
because their guy didn’t win.
I think that’s been pretty
clear for the last 10 months.”
When asked about progress
he has made on the economic
development front
since taking over as mayor,
Pekau said Village Board
members have blocked most
of what he has tried to do.
But he cited his work on the
Amazon bid and the Seritage
redevelopment project at the
mall as things he championed.
“I’ve also started an I-80
corridor working group with
Tinley Park and Mokena,
which has never existed before,”
he said. “[But] you
can go through the executive
minutes, and you’ll see
how much pushback I’ve
gotten since I’ve been here
on any idea I’ve had. How
many times have you heard
it said that I’m one vote out
of seven?”
Pekau said his position
has been stated in the past
about the role of the mayor.
He thought it should have
stayed a part-time position.
“It’s not currently,” he
said. “They have to do
whatever they are going to
do. Again, I didn’t know it
was going to the committee
tonight. If it comes to the
board at the next meeting,
great.”
But is it fair to expect results
after just 11 months?
“That’s something you’ll
have to ask them,” Pekau
said. “At the end of the day, I
was elected, and I was elected
into a full-time position.
I treat it as such. A lot of it
is going to a lot of different
meetings, retention visits,
setting up the Economic Development
Advisory Board.
I am constantly working the
phone on those issues with
the state, with the county.
That’s what a lot of that
work is, and that’s what I’m
doing.”
Pekau said there were no
projects in the pipeline for
I-80 when he took over.
“Mokena hadn’t been
engaged, and Tinley Park
hadn’t been engaged,” Pekau
said. “So, first, I had to
engage our neighbors.”
He said the working
group’s third meeting will
take place in May, and it has
already gotten the ball rolling.
“We’re putting marketing
materials together, collectively,
the three of us, with
the Will County Center for
Economic Development,”
he said. “That takes time, because
[the other towns] have
to get approval from their
boards.”
Pekau said he got verbal
approval from each board
member about the goals for
the I-80 work group, as well,
meaning “it’s absolutely not
true” that he had not been
keeping the board members
apprised of his work.
Pekau also said the Amazon
work led to some interest
in the I-80 corridor
from Illinois Department of
Commerce & Economic Opportunity
and INTERSECT
Illinois, a private-public
partnership for economic development
who sent a representative
to go on a full-day
tour of Orland Park and the
I-80 corridor.
In terms of his hours, he
said they vary — daytime
hours, nighttime hours,
weekdays and weekends.
But he is doing the work.
“Ask my wife how many
hours I put in,” Pekau said,
smiling. “That would be a
good person to ask.”
card left in auditorium to buy soda
Jalil R. Smith, 23, of
15624 Lexington Ave. in
Harvey, was charged March
8 with theft of lost or mislaid
property after he allegedly
used the debit card in a
wallet left behind by a customer
at Marcus Theatres
Orland Park Cinema, 16350
LaGrange Road. A 19-yearold
victim reportedly left a
wallet containing a driver’s
license, identification card
and debit card in an auditorium.
When she returned to
find it, a manager could not
locate it but saw on video
that Smith, an employee,
used the card to purchase a
soda valued at $6.04, police
said. The wallet was in his
pants pocket when police
arrived, according to the report.
He also reportedly had
a warrant from the Cook
County Sheriff’s Department
for theft over $300/
theft by deception.
March 15
• Merisa Marie Pernice, 31,
of 19928 Scarth Lane in
Mokena, was charged with
retail theft and resisting a
peace officer after she allegedly
tried to take a handbag,
wallet and keychain valued
at a total of $500 from a
store at Orland Square. She
grabbed the handbag and
walked out without paying
for it, police said. Inside, she
had a wallet and keychain,
according to the report. An
officer saw she had pepper
spray with the set of keys,
and asked to hold it during
the conversation, police
said. She allegedly refused,
pulling her wrist away, refusing
to let go of the spray,
turning her arm away from
the handcuffs and pulling
away. She also refused to
put her legs and feet in the
car so the door could be
closed, police added.
Orland Park Village Board
Open Plan Commission chairmanship leads to strife
Jon DePaolis
Freelance Reporter
Another meeting, another
fight over commission appointments.
This time, the Village of
Orland Park Board of Trustees
argued April 2 over who
should serve as the next
chairman of the Plan Commission.
Mayor Keith Pekau put
forward ex-Trustee Ed
Schussler, who recently
was appointed to the commission,
as his nomination.
But as soon as the item was
motioned for and seconded
by the current Village Board
members, a discussion followed
about potentially
moving the chairmanship to
a rotating basis.
Ultimately, the Village
Board members voted
6-1 against appointing
Schussler as chairman of
the Plan Commission, with
Pekau casting the lone affirmative
ballot.
During the discussion,
Trustee Kathleen Fenton
pointed out that she thought
the other members of the
commission who had served
on it longer should have
been considered.
“In relation to this appointment,
I personally
feel that there are five other
members who have more
seniority on the Plan Commission,
who rightfully deserve
to have that position
versus someone who just
joined the Plan Commission,”
Fenton said.
Trustee Michael Carroll
said he shared the same
concern as Fenton.
“My understanding is that
this member, [Schussler],
has been on for three meetings,”
Carroll said. “All of
our commissions do a lot
great, hard work for the Village.
But I can’t think of
any other commission currently
that does more work
in advance of their meetings,
during their meetings
and serves a pretty vital
role in helping us parcel
out what we want to do as
a board. I think not having
one of the members that has
been a vice chair or been a
long-serving member get
an opportunity to serve [as
chairman] — at least for a
little while — wouldn’t be
fair.”
Trustee Patricia Gira,
who said she served on the
Featuring 20+ fun things to do
in your town over the summer!
Plan Commission for almost
10 years, put forward
a different idea for how to
handle the chairmanships of
the commissions.
“I can tell you that there
are many people there that
work very hard,” she said. “I
think it would be disheartening
to all of those who have
been serving for so long
to appoint a new person as
chair. I think there should be
a rotation established.”
Trustee Carole Griffin
Ruzich said the Plan Commission
is one of the most
important commissions in
the Village, and she also is
in favor of a rotating chairmanship.
“I think everyone on that
commission is qualified to
serve as a chairman, including
Ed Schussler,” Ruzich
said. “He obviously served
as a board member for many
years. I think he would be
qualified.
“Now, having said that,
I like the idea of a rotating
chairmanship. I don’t know
if that is something we have
done ever in the past, before
I was on the board, but
I think for those who have
served for a longer period
of time, the opportunity to
serve as a chairman should
be considered to those.”
Trustee James Dodge said
when he was on Metra’s
board, they did something
similar with rotating chairmanship.
He wondered out
loud if something similar
could be done for the Plan
Commission, with a one- or
two-year rotation.
Trustee Dan Calandriello
also voiced support for a rotating
chairmanship.
Pekau, however, said the
Village Board just went
through a “painstaking process”
for nearly 10 months in
reviewing the commissions.
He said these concerns were
never brought up.
“In this case, we have
someone who has resigned,
so I am using my prerogative
to appoint who I feel
will make the best chairman,”
Pekau said. “I don’t
think there is anyone on this
board who would question
Ed Schussler’s qualifications
to fill this role. I didn’t
hear anyone question his
qualifications. So, from that
standpoint, that’s my position
and that’s who I’m appointing.”
Later, during final comments
from the board, Carroll
said he wanted to address
something before the
“spin.”
“You saw this board approve
six of the president’s
nominees for commissions
tonight,” Carroll said. “Prior
to tonight, we approved
a dozen more, maybe even
dozens, of appointments
through the advice and
consent powers the board
has. I do take exception to
the comment that we have
blocked an appointment.
“First of all, we did approve
Ed Schussler to go on
the Plan Commission. We
did not block the appointment.
But, with advice and
consent, commonly, previous
mayors in this Village
and in other Villages have
discussed these things with
the board members prior to
the board meeting.
“We have routinely granted
our advice and consent,
but all six of us expressed
our concern that the chair-
Orland library a collection site for stuffed animals for nonprofit
Eagle Scout from
OP troop aims to
accumulate 800
donations
Thomas Czaja
Contributing Editor
Patrons visiting Homer
Township Public Library
may notice something new
greeting them when they
walk in this month: a stuffed
bear.
The bear is part of a display
and collection bin for
the Eagle Scout project of
Homer Glen resident Alex
Woracheck, 14, who is an
eighth-grader at Cardinal
Joseph Bernardin Catholic
School in Orland Hills.
Woracheck, who is part of
Boy Scout Troop 318 out
of Orland Park, decided he
wanted to help hospitalized
children for his project.
He has set up drop boxes
at a number of locations,
including the local library,
for visitors to donate new
stuffed animals. The collection
is to run throughout
April, and Woracheck then
is to help deliver them to
John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital
of Cook County in Chicago.
He is doing the project
for Comfort Fur Kids, a
nonprofit founded in 2013
by Caley Trepac, who was
diagnosed with Chiari malformation,
syringomyelia
and scoliosis, and had brain
decompression surgery, according
to the Comfort Fur
Kids website. The website
said she held onto her
stuffed animal during severe
headaches, blurred vision,
fatigue, nausea, numbness
in her hands and face, and
weakness in her legs. She
wanted other children to
have a furry friend, as well,
during the difficult moments
while hospitalized.
“The organization works
with children having surgeries,”
Woracheck explained.
“It helps comfort them. My
brother went through surgeries
when he was really little,
and getting a stuffed animal,
he was comforted and excited,
even when he went
through a lot of pain.”
The inspiration from his
younger brother Justin and
wanting to help other children
going through a tough
time made the choice for his
project an easy one.
In addition to having a
collection site at the Homer
library, 14320 W. 151st
St. in Homer Glen, other
drop-off sites are Cardinal
Joseph Bernardin Catholic
School, 9250 W. 167th St.
in Orland Hills; the Orland
Park Public Library, 14921
S. Ravinia Ave.; The Music
Connection, 10751 165th St.
in Orland Park and 9370 W.
Laraway Road in Frankfort;
St. Francis of Assisi Catholic
Church, 15050 Wolf Road in
Orland Park; and BDI Playhouse
Children’s Therapy,
11411 W. 183rd St. in Orland
Park and 600 N. Commons
Drive, Suite 102, in
Aurora.
Woracheck’s initial goal
was to collect 500 or more
stuffed animals, but he decided
to push that goal even
higher.
“My first estimate was
500, but then I raised it up
to 800,” he said. “Anything
lower or higher than that is
good, but my final estimate
Homer Glen resident and Boy Scout Troop 318 member
Alex Woracheck is collecting stuffed animals throughout
April for his Eagle Scout project for Comfort Fur Kids,
a nonprofit that gives the toys to hospitalized children.
Photo submitted
right now is 800.”
He said the collection is
going well and anticipates it
will pick up more as people
hear about the different donation
sites. His mother, Jennifer,
said she is excited for
him and thinks it is a great
collection different from the
typical Eagle Scout project
and allows the community
to give back to others in the
community.
“Alex knows it’s not easy
for children to be in the hospital,
and that they don’t
completely understand what
is going on with their bodies
at the time,” she said. “We
want to bring that comfort to
the children.”
She added that Comfort
Fur Kids splits the stuffed
animals into two different
categories: one for infants
and toddlers with stuffed animals
that do not have anything
that could potentially
be a choking hazard, and
then all other stuffed animals
for older children.
Jennifer noted Trepac was
older when she had one of
her surgeries, and she thinks
all children and teens up to
18 years old — and others at
any age — could find a simple
joy and comfort provided
by a stuffed animal.
Sheree Kozel-La Ha, executive
director of the Homer
Township Public Library,
said Alex reached out to her
about the project. She invited
him to stop by, and said
she and the rest of library
staff were excited and happy
to support him toward his
philanthropic goal.
“I was impressed with
him,” Kozel-La Ha said. “I
think it is really a characterbuilding
thing. I personally
believe that any type of
project that touches so many
young lives is worthwhile.
“It is worthwhile to get
sick kids something that
could bring them some type
of comfort.”
The chance to give back is
likewise a great opportunity
to those who frequent the library,
the executive director
said. She has seen families
come in and teach their children
to be part of something
bigger than themselves.
Consequently, a child will
come in and donate a stuffed
animal or two for another
child in need.
Seniors also love to give,
according to Kozel-La Ha.
They will mention they have
several stuffed animals at
home that they may have received
as a present and are
still in pristine condition.
They bring them in to donate.
Ultimately, any age can
and does give with a sense
of enjoyment and pride in
the kind act.
“For a community thing
like this, an Eagle Scout
project, everyone wants to
help Alex achieve his goal,”
Kozel-La Ha said.
Alex and Troop 318 have
been and will continue to
come in every other day during
the month in their Boy
Scout uniforms in a collaborative
effort to collect donations.
They had a lot to collect
recently, as Homer Township
Vision Center owner and Orland
Park resident Jeanine
Reding stopped by with a
few dozen stuffed animals to
contribute to the cause. The
certified optician said she is
trying to downsize at home
and gathered the stuffed animals
when hearing about the
project.
“I’m a give-back person,”
Reding said. “It always
feels good when you change
somebody’s day and help
somebody out.”
She also gave Alex credit
and said she thinks he will
be very successful in life.
Alex, who spent his younger
years in Cub Scout Pack 64
in Homer Glen/Lockport,
is set to attend Lockport
Township High School next
school year.
“I think it’s excellent,”
Reding said of Alex’s project
and his determination to
give back. “You can never
have too much to get people
involved with.”
Village
From Page 8
man should be on a rotating
basis. We are more
than willing to work with
the board president on who
those people may be. But
all six of us indicated we
would prefer it be a rotating
chairmanship. This could
have been resolved prior to
tonight with a simple discussion
with each of us.”
Pekau said, “it’s not spin.”
“No one has mentioned
rotating [chairmanships] on
anything over the last nine
months that we’ve had this
drawn-out discussion on
boards and commissions,”
Pekau said. “Additionally,
it has been made very clear
to me regularly that if there
were vacancies, there would
be no issues; it was replacements
that were a problem.
“There’s a vacancy. It is the
first chairperson that I have
appointed. The very first
and only. And the vote was
6-1 against. So, we will just
continue to work, like we
have for the last 10 or 11
months. And we’ll continue
to move forward.”

Lady - A Women’s Expo to return April 21
Jon DePaolis
Freelance Reporter
It is a Mother’s Day tradition
unlike any other.
Lady - A Women’s Expo,
presented by 22nd Century
Media and Planet Fitness, is
set to return from 9 a.m.-1
p.m. Saturday, April 21, at
the Tinley Park Convention
Center, 18451 Convention
Center Drive in Tinley Park.
The annual event also is
sponsored by the Chicago
Sky, Ingalls Health System
and Celebrity Cruises.
The free event has more
than 100 vendors slated to
attend this year — covering
health and wellness to fashion
and beauty, food to financial
planning — making
it the largest Lady expo to
date, according to Heather
Warthen, chief events officer
at 22nd Century Media.
“The nice thing about this
expo that I see year to year
is that we see a lot of girls
getting together and starting
a ladies day out,” Warthen
said. “We also draw moms,
daughters and granddaughters.
That’s what makes me
happy. It’s a great prelude
into Mother’s Day weekend
and a great chance for
women of all ages to bond.”
Please see Expo, 12
Lady – A Women’s Expo: Four hacks to get the most out of your visit
Jon DePaolis, Freelance Reporter
A lot of people will be strolling
through the aisles Saturday, April 21,
for the fifth annual Lady – A Women’s
Expo. We asked Heather Warthen,
22nd Century Media’s chief events
officer and resident expert expo authority,
for some “hacks” for those
who plan to attend, so they can make
best use of their time there.
1. Scout ahead: Take a look at the
event’s Eventbrite webpage before
you head to the convention center. It
will have the full list of vendors, an
event schedule for the fitness classes,
cooking demos and main stage entertainment.
Map out some things you
definitely want to do and save yourself
some idle time.
2. Arrive early to get some swag:
Have you ever heard the expression,
“The early bird gets the worm?” Well,
in this case, early arrivers have the
best chance at receiving a free gift
bag. There only are 500 of these bad
boys, so the closer you arrive to 9
a.m., the better your chance to pick
one up.
3. Be a trendsetter; go against the
flow: Warthen says that oftentimes,
expogoers tend to follow a similar
path through the aisles, leading to
some congestion at certain spots. One
way to avoid that? Be a trailblazer
and walk in the opposite direction, by
working from the back to the front.
4. Don’t be a hero, choose comfort
over style: If those boots aren’t
made for walking, leave them at
home. With approximately 100 vendors
and some serious entertainment,
odds are your daily step count is going
to exceed your goal. Wear some
comfortable shoes.
Expo
From Page 11
Among the highlights this
year will be an expanded
roster of vendors, as well as
entertainment options.
“I think people like to see
what the vendors have to offer,”
Warthen said. “It’s a
great opportunity, because
we have an entire stage of
cooking demos, which is
back again this year. We have
some great local chefs, and
you can pick up some new
cooking tips. I know that was
a huge draw last year.”
She also pointed to the
main stage attractions, such
as Danni Allen — the winner
of Season 14 of “The
Biggest Loser” — and
plenty free fitness classes,
including cardio and yoga.
Also returning to the
expo this year is Silk Avenue,
from whom attendees
can purchase custom-made
scarves.
“We’ve got something for
everybody,” Warthen said.
“There’s plenty to do, and
I think people like seeing
the variety of vendors we
get. It’s not all clothing or
food or home remodeling or
repairs; we really do try to
bring in a variety that people
will enjoy.”
New this year will be Tracy
DeGraaf, who authored
the 2010 book, “Laugh
Anyway Mom: Hilarious
Survival Stories From a
Mother of Five Who Has
Learned How to Keep the
Joy in Motherhood and
How You Can Too.”
Also new this year will
be a couple of mobile boutiques,
such as Coash Clothing
Company and Three B’s
Mobile Boutique.
LifeSource also will be
sponsoring blood and bone
marrow drives during the
expo. Appointments may be
made in advance by calling
(877) 543-3768 or visiting
www.LifeSource.org.
Free gift bags also will be
given to the first 500 people
through the doors.
FROM THE MOKENA MESSENGER
‘Every 21 Seconds’ to make public
debut
On Friday, April 13, “Every 21
Seconds,” the film based on Mokena
native Brian Sweeney’s struggle
with traumatic brain injury, will
make its public debut at Emagine
Entertainment’s Frankfort Theatre.
The film previously had been
screened by a private audience in
January.
“Every 21 Seconds” follows
Sweeney’s life after he was viciously
attacked outside of a bar in
Wisconsin in 1992. The attack left
Sweeney with a traumatic brain injury.
Since then, Sweeney has been
on a mission to share his story in
the hope that it will raise awareness
and spur action for the approximately
2 million people per year
who are diagnosed with and suffer
from a TBI.
“I spent the first five years trying
to convince people that there was
nothing wrong with me, and every
day since trying to get people
to understand what the challenges
are for folks who go through this,
what some of the deficits might
be,” Sweeney said in an interview
with The Messenger back in January.
“But, also, what you can do,
not what you can’t do. I always say
focus on the capabilities, not the
disabilities.
“I wanted to be the voice that
gave these people a voice.”
The movie is based on Sweeney’s
book of the same name.
The film recently was nominated
for several awards — including
Best Picture, Best Actor in a Leading
Role and Best Ensemble — by
Festigious, a monthly online film
festival.
The 24-year-old at the time had
never taken a composition course
before this one and, surprisingly,
wrote a “bad” piece that ended up
being enjoyed by his classmates. It
was that moment that encouraged
Stephenson to begin writing music
full-time.
“I was like, well, if I try to write
a bad piece and someone likes it,
let’s see what happens when I try
to write good music,” he said. “I
started composing at the age of 24,
and that grew and grew and grew.”
His talent and love for music
composition led him to receive an
invitation in November 2015 to
write a piece for the Chicago Symphony
Orchestra that will be premiered
during one of their concert
weekends in June 2019.
“It’s just one of those beautiful
things that you never expect,”
Stephenson said. “I mean, this is
literally the orchestra I grew up listening
to. My dream as a kid was
to someday play in the Chicago
Symphony. That’s not happening,
because I don’t play trumpet anymore,
but this about as close or
maybe even better.”
FROM THE FRANKFORT STATION
Frankfort dental hygienist helps
create a community with healthier
teeth
The dentist’s office is not most
people’s favorite place to find
themselves, but for those who cannot
afford a visit, it is even harder
to get themselves in that chair.
Dayna Mazurek, a dental hygienist
at Advanced Family Dental
in Frankfort, is not only helping
patients find their way to an office
but also finding her way to them.
After completing an American
Dental Association training to become
a community dental health
coordinator, Mazurek has increased
her involvement in the community
and on social media.
“I bring all my experiences out
in the public and to here where I
can educate the patients more oneto-one,”
noted Mazurek, who said
she is able to better talk to patients
and educate them about their oral
health, both in the office and at
public events such as health fairs.
Mazurek said it can be difficult
for those who are uninsured or
underinsured to find the resources
they need, but she is hoping to
change that by distributing information
on those programs more
widely.
“I grew up in a single-family
household,” Mazurek said. “As I
was a teenager and younger adult
I was on Medicaid. So, I have that
experience to help those less fortunate,
because I was in their shoes,
too.”
Advanced Family Dental in
Frankfort accepts both private insurance
and public aid and has
HMO and cash patients as well.
Mazurek said the office treats all
its patients the same regardless of
their insurance status, unlike some
dental practices where she has
worked in the past.
FROM THE TINLEY JUNCTION
Tinley Park gas station annexation
request faces opposition
It was just after midnight April 6
when the Tinley Park’s Plan Commission
voted to continue rather
than adjourn a public hearing that
had already lasted in excess of four
hours.
A quorum of Commissioners
came to a consensus that the advisory
group needed more time to
deliberate before offering a recommendation
to the Board of Trustees
on an annexation request that has
drawn vocal opposition from nearby
residents, who cite concerns
over traffic, safety and property
values from Lenny’s Food N Fuel,
located at 19420 S. Harlem Ave.
Owner Leonard McEnery petitioned
the Village to annex a
4.87-acre parcel of property that
operates as a diesel and regular
fuel station, Dunkin’ Donuts drivethru,
car wash, and propane fueling
station. The parcel is located
in unincorporated Will County, and
receives water and sewer services
from Frankfort.
The agreement is contingent
upon the Village the rezoning the
property from C-2 to B-3 and creating
a new liquor license to allow
for the sale of packaged liquor, as
well as 24-hour video gaming in
compliance with the Illinois Gaming
Commission’s definition of a
“truck stop.” The businesses in operation
also would need two special
use permits to operate within
Tinley Park.
Officials said the annexation
could bring in $408,000 of revenue
annually from sales, property, and
video gaming taxes. The public
hearing is scheduled to continue
Thursday, April 19, at the next Plan
Commission meeting.
FROM THE HOMER HORIZON
Healthy Kids Running Series
returns to Homer for second year
The Esquivels from Lockport all
have one thing in common — running.
Robert participates in halfmarathons
and marathons, and
his wife, Rebecca, joins him on
Saturdays for their running club.
In the last year, their 5-year-old
daughter, Graysen, began to follow
in their footsteps and lace up
her own sneakers to participate in
the Healthy Kids Running Series in
Homer Glen.
The series, which features five
races over five weeks, began Sunday,
April 8, and will continue for
the next four Sundays at Stonebridge
Park.
“My husband was running marathons
and half-marathons, and
[Graysen] loved to go watch,” Rebecca
said. “She always runs with
him to get his medal, so she’ll run
the last 75 feet or so, whatever she
can. So when [the Healthy Kids
Running Series] came up, it was
like, ‘This is yours; you can do this
for yourself,’ and she loved it.”
Greysen participated in the series’
inaugural year in Homer Glen
in 2017, winning her division in
the 50-yard dash. Children in prekindergarten
run the 50-yard dash,
while kindergartners and firstgraders
run a quarter of a mile.
Second- and-third-grade students
run a half mile, with the fourth- and
fifth-graders running a full mile.
The series is held twice a year in
the spring and fall. In 2017, there
were 130 children that participated
between both. Currently, approximately
70 children signed up for
this year’s spring series.
Parents can register their children
online at www.healthykids
FROM THE NEW LENOX PATRIOT
Police: Phone charger may have
caused house fire that killed man,
dog
A 69-year-old New Lenox resident
died Friday, April 6, following
a house fire April 3 that took place
in the 2200 block of Sanford Avenue
in New Lenox.
Larry Crabb Sr. reportedly was
removed from the burning house
by his son, Larry Crabb Jr., and a
utility line worker, who was working
nearby. The family’s dog died
during the fire, according to New
Lenox Deputy Chief Louis Alessandrini.
The elder Crabb’s wife
was not home at the time of the incident,
Alessandrini added. Crabb
Sr. reportedly was taken to Silver
Cross Hospital and was later transferred
to Loyola Medical Center’s
Burn Center in Maywood.
Alessandrini said Crabb Jr. was
out to take the family’s other dog
to the vet and came back at around
9:30 a.m. to find that the house was
on fire. He solicited help from the
aforementioned utility line worker
to help save his dad. The tri-level
home sustained “extreme” damage
before it was extinguished by the
New Lenox Fire Protection District
and several other fire departments,
including Mokena, Frankfort, Orland
Park, Homer Glen and Lockport,
according to a press release
from the New Lenox Fire Protection
District.
Alessandrini said the cause of
the fire is still under investigation,
but he was told by detectives at the
scene that an off-brand phone charger
may have been the source of an
electrical fire.
From the Editor
BILL JONES
bill@opprairie.com
This week’s cover
story focuses on the
Orland Park Village
Board, which has dealt with
on-again, off-again spats ever
since Mayor Keith Pekau
took office last May.
That is not to place all
of the blame squarely on
Pekau, but, since his victory,
a Village Board — that
largely favored his competitor
and former Mayor Dan
McLaughlin to retain in the
race — has found itself at
odds with its Village president.
It has faced bouts of
disagreement over the likes
of commission and committee
appointments, development
— hell, they couldn’t
even agree on a single Year
in Review when The Orland
Park Prairie requested it at
the end of 2017.
That is not to say everything
has been a fight, but
the breaks from the norm,
for obvious reasons, take the
spotlight. And that spotlight
was white-hot during last
CONTACT
Expensive experimentation
week’s Finance Committee
meeting, when Trustee Patricia
Gira publicly broached the
topic of reverting the mayor’s
full-time role to a part-time
one, not even a year into the
first term since it was changed
from part-time to full-time.
But Gira herself admitted
there are no real guidelines
nor review process for the
new full-time role. That’s like
giving someone a job, giving
him no instructions, having
no process to review his work
and then saying he has been
doing it wrong.
It all lends a little credence
to Pekau’s theory that they
want to take it away because
“their guy” didn’t win. At the
very least, it seems to confirm
it was a role designed with a
single person in mind, with
a shoddy contingency plan
for the results of an uncertain
election.
It suggests that, as implemented,
maybe it was a bad
idea from the start. Maybe the
Village of Orland Park should
have stuck with a recommendation
to hire another
individual — one with the
skill set to do the economic
development job it needed
— rather than leave it to the
chance of an open election.
Yet, none of this precludes
the fact that the Village Board
DANA ANDERSON
has a right to be concerned
with how things are going.
Maybe Pekau simply isn’t
doing the job well. And
maybe he will need to put his
money where his mouth is in
addressing a change to which
he was vocally opposed from
the start.
But maybe no one else
would be finding any more
success — getting anywhere
more than a few conversation-starters
— in that
role. That corridor has been
stagnant for years, despite
being called a prized piece
of land for developers. And
that includes the many years
the former mayor served the
Village (albeit part-time).
But this structure also very
well still may work going
forward. Maybe it just hasn’t
had the time it needs to take
root and grow results.
It is all possible, but at the
very least the Village Board
finally realized it has some
pressing questions to ask
about the mayor and his role,
and plans to do so in May. It’s
just a shame they’re doing
it a year-and-a-half too late,
following an experiment that
could end up costing taxpayers
more than half a million
when the budget is already
tight. Oof.

Kip Pasta reveals his abstract work at OP library
Laurie Fanelli
Freelance Reporter
Abstract, organic and architectural
— the art of Glen
Ellyn’s Kip Pasta inspires
intrigue with complex yet
visually effortless designs.
Stories unfold in angles
and lines with each of his
multi-dimensional pieces,
which he refers to as “construction
sculptures” because
of his departure from
the aesthetics of classic art
sculptures. Pasta’s work
is on display at the Orland
Park Public Library this
month, and the artist himself
stopped by for a special meet
and greet the evening of Friday,
April 6.
Outreach Assistant Duke
Phelps explained that the
structural elements of Pasta’s
work inspired library
staff to display the artist’s
collection.
“We were very interested
in showcasing someone
more sculptural this month,
and I think Mr. Kip Pasta
represents that in what he
does here,” Phelps said. “He
has a sculptural effect, along
with other elements mixed
into the pieces. There’s
something very different and
unique in what he creates.”
Though Pasta works in
three dimensions, he counts
American painter Jackson
Pollock as one of his greatest
influences.
“Jackson Pollock’s paintings
were called splatter
paintings — they are very
abstract; I was inspired by
him,” Pasta explained. “I
thought, ‘Can I translate that
type of abstract work into
something three-dimensional?’”
With his sculptural pieces,
Pasta pairs childlike wonder
with a mathematical mind.
Each element is scrutinized
to perfection before being
placed into the piece in a
way that connects with the
creativity of viewers.
“It’s interesting,” Pasta
said. “When little children
see my work, they seem to
be the most fascinated by it.
There’s no hidden agenda
with children. They look at
it, and they’re very excited
about it. As an artist, you
want to get those emotional
or inspirational responses
from someone.”
Pasta takes great care
to perfect his creations, at
times spending hundreds of
hours on one sculpture.
“I take my time, looking
for space, dimensions and
lines,” he said. “There’s always
a relationship in the
work from one piece to the
next. Negative space has a
big value. That’s all thought
out to enhance the work. I’ve
spent hours sometimes figuring
out where one or two
pieces will go in the sculpture.
That’s all part of the
process.
“When the work is done,
you can look at it and — to
me — it’s flawless. If the
viewer is looking at it, and
the work has the ability to
draw their eye from part to
part in a comfortable fashion,
you’ve achieved one of
your goals.”
Throughout the artist meet
and greet, Pasta said he enjoyed
chatting with library
patrons as they discovered
their own interpretations of
his art. He was open to sharing
the background of his
process, but when it came to
a piece’s specific meaning,
he thinks that is best decided
by each individual.
He explained, “I love abstract
art because the viewer’s
imagination enhances
the work. An artist can paint
a rose, and 100 people will
look at it and see a rose. If
you do a piece of abstract
art, 100 people look at it and
Kip Pasta shares insight into the inspiration behind his “construction sculptures” Friday, April 6, during a Meet the Artist
event at Orland Park Public Library. Photos by Laurie Fanelli/22nd Century Media
Orland Park residents Nettie and Tom Grudowski check out
the work of Kip Pasta.
you’ll get 100 different responses.
It’s like a treasure
hunt of the imagination.”
some with a little bit of both.
The chain started in Austin,
Texas in 1982 and has
nearly 100 locations, mostly
spread across the South,
East Coast and Central Great
Plains.
Hallmarks of the chain
include a nacho car, a selfserve
nacho bar situated in
the trunk of a Buick 1958,
and the chihuahua bar,
where visitors can bring a
framed picture of their dogs
to hang up and receive a free
appetizer to boot.
Salazar said last week
there were almost 300 pups
adorning the walls and bar
area, but he is hoping to get
that number up to at least
1,000.
One room is reserved as
the hubcap room, where the
ceiling in the original location
was painted purple, and
— because of the owners’
displeasure with the color —
consequently covered with a
variety of hubcaps.
Upon closer inspection,
the iconic purple paint can
be seen between the gleaming
hubcaps at the Orland
Park location.
Many of the same things
can be found at all Chuy’s
locations — including the
menu, nacho car, chihuahua
bar, indoor palm tree decor
and hubcap room — but the
artwork adorning the walls,
the design and layout are
unique to each location.
Most of the decor in the
restaurant is brought in from
Mexico, where Salazar said
the company tries to support
local artists, including
those who have been making
the more than 1,000 handcarved
wooden fish on the
ceiling in the bar area.
Chuy’s opened March 27,
and so far Salazar said the
Chicka-Chicka Boom-Boom
chicken enchiladas ($12.29)
have been among the most
popular menu items. He said
what sets the dish apart are
the fresh ingredients, inhouse
roasted chicken and,
of course, the Boom-Boom
sauce.
The Boom-Boom sauce,
one of a variety of sauce options
at Chuy’s, is made with
cheese, roasted New Mexican
green chiles, tomatillos,
green onions, cilantro and
lime juice, as well as some
“secret spices.”
The creamy jalapeño
sauce, although originally
served as only a salad dressing,
has become a favorite,
Salazar added. It is a ranchbased
sauce with a jalapeno
kick, and people put it on everything
from tortilla chips
to burritos and tacos.
Chuy’s even sells the
creamy jalapeño sauce in
32-ounce take-home containers
for those who cannot
live without it.
Their burritos ‘big as
yo’ face,’ tacos, house specialties
and enchiladas are
served with freshly cooked
Mexican or green chile rice,
and house-made refried or
charro beans.
Their burritos are made
with homemade tortillas
stuffed with refried beans
and cheese ($9.99), seasoned
ground sirloin ($10.29), oven-roasted
chicken ($11.29),
or fajita chicken or beef
($11.99).
The blended strawberry
margarita is made with
fresh-squeezed lime juice.
Fried Chicken ($12.29) is
a popular Chuy’s original
recipe, featuring a chicken
breast breaded with Lay’s
potato chips, deep fried and
topped with green chile
sauce and cheddar sauce.
Chuy’s connection to The
King includes a small shrine
within the restaurant and an
annual celebration in January,
during which patrons
who dress up as Elvis or
Priscilla Presley eat for free.
Happy Hour at Chuy’s is
from 4-7 p.m. Monday-Friday,
when visits to the fullyloaded
nacho car are free of
charge.
Happy Hour also features
drink specials including traditional
or strawberry house
ritas ($5.95) served frozen,
on the rocks and made with
fresh squeezed lime juice; the
The Chicka-Chicka Boom-Boom chicken enchiladas ($12.29) at Chuy’s feature freshlyroasted,
hand-pulled chicken and cheese inside homemade tortillas and topped with
Boom-Boom sauce. Photos by Amanda Stoll/22nd Century Media
The purple ceiling in the hubcap room at Chuy’s is adorned with hubcaps from various
cars of various eras, providing a uniquely shiny and interesting focal point.
grande house ritas ($8.95),
served in a pint glass with
1800 Silver tequila and extra
Grand Marnier; the house
Texas martinis ($9.75), made
with top-shelf premium tequila
and a choice of Cointreau,
Grand Marnier, or
Patron Citronge, and served
with jalapeño-stuffed olives;
and domestic beers ($4).
Other specialty drinks on
the menu at Chuy’s include
the Chuy’s Brew, a frozen
lime margarita topped with a
7-ounce Corona, and seasonal
sangrias made with fresh fruit.
Salazar said Chuy’s regularly
partners with local
organizations such as The
Bridge Teen Center in Orland
Park and area schools
for fundraisers.
Distinctive Home Builders Introduces New Craftsman Home Series
At Prairie Trails in Manhattan and WestGate Manor in Peotone!
Two new designs (with more to follow) are a direct result of buyer feedback
Two refreshing designs mark
the beginning of a new series
of Craftsman-style homes
available from Distinctive Home
Builders at its latest new home
communities: Prairie Trails;
located in Manhattan within the
highly-regarded Lincoln-Way
School District and at WestGate
Manor in Peotone within
the desirable Peotone School
District.
“Craftsman homes were
introduced in the early 1900s
in California with designs
based on a simpler, functional
aesthetic using a higher level
of craftsmanship and natural
materials. These homes were a
departure from homes that were
mass produced from that era,
“according to Bryan Nooner,
president of Distinctive Home
Builders.
“The Craftsman design has
made a comeback today for
many of the same reasons it
started over a century ago. Our
customers want to live in a home
that gets away from the “mass
produced” look and live in a
home that has more character. As
a result of our daily interaction
with our homeowners and their
input, we are excited to introduce
these two homes, with additional
designs in the works.”
Nooner, who meets with
each homeowner prior to
construction, has been working
on these plans for a while and felt
that the timing was ideal for the
debut. “Customers were asking
for something different and
simple with less monotony and
higher architectural standards.”
The result was the Craftsman
ranch and the Prairie twostory,
now available at Prairie
Trails and WestGate Manor.
The Craftsman ranch features
an open floor plan with Great
Room, three bedrooms, two
baths and a two-car (optional
three-car) garage. The Prairie
features a two-story foyer and
Great Room, three bedrooms
and one and one-half baths, a
convenient Flex Room space
on the main level and a two-car
(optional three-car) garage. The
Craftsman architectural elements
on both homes include brick and
stone exteriors with cedar shake
accent siding, low-pitched gabled
bracket roofs, front porches with
tapered columns and stone piers,
partially paned windows, and a
standard panel front entry door.
Distinctive Home Builders
offers a Craftsman-style trim
package offering trim without
ornate profiles and routers. The
trim features simplicity in design
with rectangles, straight lines and
layered look trims over doors for
example. The front entry door
will have the standard Craftsman
panel style door. Distinctive has
also created a Craftsman color
palate to assist buyers in making
coordinated choices for the
interior of their new Craftsman
home. Colors, cabinet styles and
flooring choices blend seamlessly
with the Craftsman trim package
and are available in gray tones
package and earth tones.
Distinctive offers custom maple
kitchen cabinets featuring solid
wood construction (no particle
board), have solid wood drawers
with dove tail joints, which is
very rare in the marketplace.
“When you buy a new home
from Distinctive, you truly are
receiving custom made cabinets
in every home we sell no matter
what the price range,” noted
Nooner.
Distinctive Home Builders
works to achieve a delivery goal
of 90 days with zero punch list
items for its homeowners. “Our
three decades building homes
provides an efficient construction
system,” said Nooner. “Many of
our skilled craftsmen have been
working with our company
for over 20 years. We also
take pride on having excellent
communicators throughout our
organization. This translates into
a positive buying and building
experience for our homeowners
and one of the highest referral
rates in the industry.”
Nooner added that all homes
are highly energy efficient. Every
home built will have upgraded
wall and ceiling insulation
values with energy efficient
windows and high efficiency
furnaces. Before homeowners
move into their new home,
Distinctive Home Builders
conducts a blower door test that
pressurizes the home to ensure
that each home passes a set of
very stringent Energy Efficiency
guidelines.
With the addition of these two
new designs, there are now 15
ranch, split-level and six twostory
single-family home styles to
choose from each offering from
three to eight different exterior
elevations at both communities.
The three- to four-bedroom
homes feature one and one-half
to two-and-one-half baths, twoto
three-car garages and a family
room, all in approximately 1,600
to over 3,000 square feet of living
space. Basements are included in
most models as well. Distinctive
also encourages customization
to make your new home truly
personalized to suit your lifestyle.
Oversize home sites; brick
exteriors on all four sides of the
first floor; custom maple cabinets;
ceramic tile or hardwood
floors in the kitchen, baths and
foyer; genuine wood trim and
doors and concrete driveways
can all be yours at Prairie
Trails and WestGate Manor.
Most all home sites at Prairie
Trails and WestGate Manor
can accommodate a three-car
garage; a very important amenity
to the Manhattan homebuyer,
said Nooner.
“When we opened Prairie
Trails and WestGate Manor we
wanted to provide the best new
home value for the dollar and
we feel with offering Premium
Standard Features that we do
just that. So why wait? This is
truly the best time to build your
dream home!”
Prairie Trails is also a beautiful
place to live and raise a family
featuring a 20-acre lake on site,
as well as direct access to the 22-
mile Wauponsee Glacial Prairie
Path that borders the community
and meanders through many
neighboring communities and
links to many other popular
trails. The Manhattan Metra
station is less than a mile away.
Besides Prairie Trails,
Distinctive Home Builders
has built homes throughout
Manhattan in the Butternut
Ridge and Leighlinbridge
developments, as well as in the
Will and south Cook county
areas over the past 30 years.
Distinctive Home Builders
chose the Will County village
of Peotone for its newest
community of 38 single-family
homes at WestGate Manor
within walking distance of the
esteemed Peotone High School.
Its convenient location between
Interstate 57 and Illinois Route
50 provide easy access to I-80
and commuters enjoy several
nearby train stations and a
35-minute drive to Chicago.
ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
10 Questions
with Heather Vetter
Sandburg senior Heather
Vetter is a second baseman
for the softball team
and is heading to Aurora
University in the fall to play
softball and pursue a nursing
degree.
What do you love about
softball?
I like how on every single
team I’ve played for, the
players have been so close.
There is a bond between all
of the softball players.
Even though its spelled
different, do people
think you are related to
Pearl Jam singer Eddie
Vedder?
Everybody asks me that.
My nickname is “Eddie.”
Do you know Eddie
Vedder’s music?
I think I might have heard
of one song before but I
don’t have any favorites.
What is your proudest
moment in softball?
Starting in the regional finals
last year. I always wanted
to play in a big game and
play well. I actually played
one of my best games.
Do you have any
embarrassing moments?
Last year we were running
out onto the field and I had
to jump and my head hit the
(dugout) roof and I fell onto
the field. I had to awkwardly
get up and play it off like I
meant to do it.
Why are you shooting
for a nursing degree?
JEFF VORVA/22ND CENTURY
MEDIA
My uncle (Todd Vetter)
passed away from leukemia
and my grandparents always
tell stories about how the
nurses impacted their lives
so it’s always been a goal of
mine to impact someone’s
life like that.
Do you have a movie
you can watch 100
times without getting
tired of it.
Probably the “Lion King.”
It’s my all-time favorite. My
sister and I have watched
that movie growing up and
we still watch it. I got my
tonsils out in December and
we watched it four times.
Is the TV show you
could binge forever?
“Gray’s Anatomy.” I am
hooked into it. I feel like I
am a part of their lives even
though I do absolutely nothing
with them.
If they made a movie
about your life, who
should play you?
Jennifer Aniston. I like
“Friends” and she seems
quirky and funny.
What would the title
be?
“Softball” or “The Life
of a Softball Player.” Something
like that.
BOYS TRACK
Jacobs finishes 23rd among elite runners
JEFF VORVA, Sports Editor
During a week in which
many outdoors events were
postponed because of the
weather, Sandburg senior
state and national elite cross
country runner Dylan Jacobs
headed to California to take
on some of the top track stars
in the nation in the 3200-meter
run.
The weather was warmer.
The competition was absolutely
scalding.
Jacobs finished 23rd out
of 33 runners in the Arcadia
Invitational at Arcadia
High School in Arcadia,
California.
He ran a time of 9 minutes,
6.75 seconds on Saturday,
April 7.
Sixteen runners broke the
nine-minute barrier.
To put that in perspective,
last year at the Illinois
High School Association the
winning Class 3A time was
9:03.41.
Jacobs’ time in the California
race would have
placed him second in the
state last year.
Marcus Kemp of St.
Mary’s High School in
California won the event in
8:50.95. a second.
BOYS VOLLEYBALL
Eagles aim to come out of break reversing losing trend
JEFF VORVA, Sports Editor
Sandburg’s boys volleyball
team has just about done
it all.
The Eagles have won four
Illinois High School state
championships and brought
home four more top-four
trophies.
They have won numerous
sectional and regional titles.
They won 30 or more
matches 18 times and won
41 matches in 2000.
One thing the Eagles
haven’t done, however, is
endure a losing season. According
to IHSA records,
they are 23-for-23 in .500-
plus seasons.
So the fact that the team
entered this week’s action
with a 5-8 record might be
cause for alarm.
But no panic has set in yet
with coach Dave Vales and
his troops.
“If we finished under .500,
I would be quite disappointed,”
said 6-foot-8 senior
Jake Ostema, who is heading
to Trinity Christian College
in the fall. “But I know
we could do better than that.
We’ve lost a lot of second
sets by two or three points.
If we can come back and refine
some of those things, we
will be looking good.
“I really don’t see us losing
many more times. We
have to get the energy and
the momentum up. We can’t
come out flat. It’s hard to get
on a run when you come out
flat.”
The Eagles are ending a
seven-day break by hosting
Marist on Thursday, April
12,
Prior to the break, the Eagles
were involved in a pair
of wild matches in Orland
Park.
St. Rita came in an
knocked the Eagles off 25-
Will Marks slams down a kill for Sandburg against Hinsdale South in a three-set win.
17, 13-25, 26-24 on April 3.
The match ended with officials
calling a point against
the Eagles when some in the
stands thought the Mustangs
hit the ball out of bounds.
Vales called it a “bangbang”
play that grazed one
of his players’ shirt.
“The referee made the
right call,” he said. “But it
was still a hard way to end
a match.”
Will Marks had 16 kills
against Mustangs and 6-foot-
6 junior setter Cameron Petrusevski
had 19 assists.
That loss gave the Eagles
its second three-game losing
streak of the season but it
was quickly forgotten after a
25-21, 24-26, 25-10 victory
over Hinsdale South the next
day.
The dominance of that
third game helped send the
Eagles into the week-long
break on a good note.
“Between the two matches,
we watched film - we
want to watch more film
with the young kids to they
can see their mistakes,”
Vales said. “It’s one thing to
say it but its another to see it
in video. I have a couple of
kids who have put in hours
this past week looking at
film to try to improve.”
Marks, Ostema and Cort
Jensen each had six kills and
Ostema added three blocks.
Freshman Jeremiah Burden
had 12 digs and Petrusevski
had 19 assists.
The roster features six seniors,
six juniors, two sophomores
and a freshman.
“We’ve had a ton of close
losses with a young roster,”
Vales said. “We need to get
those confidence moments.
When you win these sets by
two points, you can get on
a roll. But when you lose
them, you start getting nervous
about everything. You
get nervous about mistakes.
We need to have more successful
moments.”
Sandburg’s Daniel Gentile (left) and Jeremiah Burden
nearly collide but Gentile was able to get the set off in a
three-set victory over Hinsdale South on April 4. PHOTOS BY
BASEBALL
Lockport Sectional loaded with area teams
JEFF VORVA, Sports Editor
Providence Catholic’s
unprecedented baseball
title reign ended last year
when Sandburg knocked the
Celtics off at the Class 4A
Homewood-Flossmoor Sectional.
The Celtics had a postseason
23-game winning
streak snapped. They had
won three consecutive state
titles, which had never been
done before in the history of
the Illinois High School Association.
If the Celtics want to win
another state title in 2018,
they have a rough road,
which includes many area
teams standing in the way.
The IHSA announced its assignments
and the Celtics
plus six other 22nd Century
Media teams will duke it
out in the 21-team Lockport
Sectional. Lockport, Lincoln-Way
East,Lincoln-Way
Central, Lincoln-Way West,
Sandburg and Andrew are
also in the mix. Providence
is the only area team that
will lost a regional.
Other teams in the sectional
are Eisenhower,
Marist, Bloom, Marian,
Crete-Monee, Homewood-
Flossmoor, Thornton, Joliet
Central, Joliet West, Thornton
Fractional South, Shepard,
Stagg, Romeoville and
Thornwood.
In the April 2 edition of
the Prep Baseball Report
rankings, six teams from the
Lockport Sectional are in the
top 25. Lincoln-Way East
was ranked sixth, Andrew
13th, Lockport 14th, Sandburg
17th, Providence 22nd
and Marist 25th. That means
at least two of those teams
will not win one of the four
regional titles.
In Class 3A, Tinley Park is
in the 10-team sub-sectional
of the Ottawa Sectional. The
Titans are joined by Thornton
Fractional North, Chicago
Agricultural Science,
Morgan Park, Hillcrest, Evergreen
Park, Illiana Christian,
Lemont, Bremen and
Oak Forest.
Seeds will be announced
on May 8. The regionals
begin May 21 and the state
finals are June 8-9.
in Illinois High School
Association Class 4A state
tournament in 2017.
East outscored Thornton
Fractional South, Minooka,
Joliet West and Lockport by
a combined score of 26-3.
Will the Griffins be able to
breeze in the early part of the
postseason again?
The other teams in the 19-
team Joliet West Sectional
will have something to say
about that.
The Griffins will join
22nd Century Media-area
teams Lockport, Lincoln-
Way Central, Lincoln-Way
West and Andrew in that
sectional.
Others in the tournament
are Bolingbrook, Bloom,
Flossmoor, Thornton, Joliet
Central, Joliet West,
Thornton Fractional South,
Minooka, Plainfield Central,
Plainfield East, Plainfield
South, Romeoville and
Thornwood.
Sandburg is heading to a
19-team sectional that does
not have a host yet. Other
teams in that sectional are
Morton, Eisenhower, Reavis,
Curie, Kelly, Kennedy,
Marist, Mother McAuley,
Hinsdale South, Proviso
West, Hinsdale Central, Lyons,
Oak Lawn, Richards,
Shepard, Stagg, Riverside-
Brookfield and Argo.
That might prove to see a
tough sectional to get out of
for the Eagles as Marist returns
a ton of talent from a
team that won 25 games and
finished fourth in the state in
Class 4A in 2017.
In Class 3A, Providence
Eye-yi-yi: Staff, students have fun at Classic
JEFF VORVA, Sports Editor
When Courtney Milligan
was growing up in Decatur,
she said she was a swimmer.
That means she was used
to chlorine in her eyes.
But the Orland Park
School District 135 Crosstown
Classic was even
tougher on her eyes.
Milligan, the assistant
principal at Liberty School,
was a member of the Liberty
staff volleyball team
that beat Prairie School staff
members 24-26, 25-11, 25-
16 in front of hundreds of
fans Thursday, April 5 in the
third Crosstown Classic at
Jerling Jr. High School.
Five minutes before the
start of the match, a ball hit
her in the right eye hard during
warmups. She spent a
few minutes smiling, wincing
and covering the eye with
her hand but proclaimed, “It
didn’t hurt.”
After the match, Milligan,
Liberty Principal Daniel
Prorok, Prairie Principal
Jeff Nightingale and Prairie
Assistant Principal Laurie
Patterson all had pies thrown
in their faces as a part of a
raffle.
Both of Milligan’s eyes
took a beating after that, but
she still maintained a smile.
Interestingly, the pregame
shot to the right peeper came
courtesy of Prairie’s Lauren
Billo. Billo has gone through
some pain of her own this
school year. She is an assistant
girls volleyball coach,
at Sandburg and injured her
Achilles while coaching in
the fall and needed surgery
in October. She was seen
scooting around on a scooter
during some matches.
This was her first volleyball
action since the surgery.
“That felt good,” she said
after the match. “I was a
little nervous and tentative at
first. But it was fun.”
Billo is a co-coach of Prairie’s
eighth-grade volleyball
team with Bill Zopf.
in Crosstown wins.
booed while singing the
Iranian national anthem and
spitting on the American
flag actually helped coach
United States Olympic
wresting hopefuls. That
ranks up there as one of my
favorite columns.
Although Standard Bank
is probably too busy to do
this now, it was cool that
in March it was able to
host several high school
games. When Andrew and
Sandburg needed a park on
March 28 for their rivalry
game, the two District 230
teams were able to use the
turf field in Crestwood.
Back in Joliet, Silver
Cross Field is now known
as Route 66 Stadium and,
before I get to chatty about
what is happening there, we
have to see when the field
will actually be ready for
play.
Field Turf was supposed
to replace the grass field
and as of early April, the
weather was not cooperating
and the field was not
draining properly. No turf
was laid down. The May
15 Slammers home opener
could be in jeopardy. Let’s
hope that these setbacks
don’t interfere with the
Illinois High School Association
Class 3A and 4A
baseball state championships.
Toyota Park is the home
of the Chicago Fire.
Yes, the Cubs, White
Sox, Bears, Bulls, Blackhawks
and now Sister
Jean’s Loyola Ramblers
have a higher profile in the
Chicago area than the Fire
but Bastian Schweinsteiger
is an international star
and Nemanja Nikolic is an
amazing goal scorer.
So, we will keep an eye
on some of these places in
the coming months.
It should be a fun spring
and summer ahead.
LISTEN UP
“I really don’t see us losing many more times.
We have to get the energy and the momentum
up.”
