Orland Fire to offer meeting on<br />

importance of ‘Homecare’ for seniors<br />

is to be the special guest at<br />

the next Coffee & Conversation<br />

event to be held Thursday,<br />

April 26, by the Orland<br />

Fire Protection District.<br />

The Fire District hosts the<br />

free Coffee & Conversations<br />

programs each month to educate<br />

residents on services<br />

related to healthcare, emergency<br />

care and fire safety.<br />

“Betsy” Dine said that the<br />

sessions are important especially<br />

to seniors, and families<br />

who have members who<br />

are disabled and in need.<br />

The two-hour Coffee &<br />

Conversations program is<br />

held each month and sponsored<br />

by the Orland Fire,<br />

the Senior Advisory Council<br />

and Aishling care.<br />

The next meeting begins<br />

at 9 a.m. April 26. The meetings<br />

are held at the Fire District’s<br />

Administration Building<br />

at 9790 W. 151st St.<br />

Junior Cadet Program<br />

Overview<br />

The Junior Cadet Class (Pilot<br />

Program) is being offered<br />

this year as a one-day class on<br />

Monday, July 16. This class<br />

is to be offered to the first 15<br />

children (residents) between<br />

the ages of 13 and 15.<br />

This class is to give students<br />

a glimpse of an opportunity<br />

to explore Fire Rescue and<br />

emergency medical services.<br />

This class is to provide a<br />

combination of classroom and<br />

side-by-side training with our<br />

cadets and firefighters.<br />

Junior Cadet Class registration<br />

is to begin from 9 a.m.-3<br />

p.m. Monday, June 4, at the<br />

Administration Building.<br />

Kid’s Fire & Life Safety<br />

Camp<br />

The Kid’s Fire & Life<br />

Safety Camp is to be offered<br />

again this coming summer<br />

as a three-day camp, starting<br />

on Wednesday, July 18,<br />

and ending on Friday, July<br />

20. This class will be offered<br />

to the first 40 children<br />

(residents) between the ages<br />

of 8 and 12. This camp is interactive.<br />

The campers will<br />

receive classroom and outside<br />

activities.<br />

Orland Fire Protection<br />

District Annual Open House<br />

Our Annual House is to<br />

be held from 10 a.m.-1 p.m.<br />

Saturday, July 21. The Open<br />

House features a wide range<br />

of demonstrations, showcasing<br />

how firefighters address<br />

various emergency situations.<br />

Different major fire equipment<br />

that is used for emergency<br />

responses will be shown. A<br />

surprise scenario will be displayed<br />

at some point during<br />

the day.<br />

This event features free<br />

giveaways, refreshments and<br />

the involvement of many<br />

community organizations<br />

throughout the district, which<br />

are to provide information on<br />

emergency and health services<br />

and prizes. The Senior<br />

Advisory Council is to be on<br />

hand to help the staff of the<br />

fire district.<br />

Orland Park for $20K prize<br />

This Earth Month, the National<br />

Recreation and Park<br />

Association is collaborating<br />

with The Walt Disney<br />

Company to revitalize parks<br />

across the United States for<br />

a third year. The city that receives<br />

the most nominations<br />

is to receive a $20,000 grant<br />

to improve a local park as<br />

part of a Meet Me at the Park<br />

campaign.<br />

Through April 30, Orland<br />

Park residents have the opportunity<br />

to nominate the<br />

Village to receive $20,000<br />

in grant funding to make improvements<br />

at a local park.<br />

BeInspired, park supporters<br />

can nominate Orland Park.<br />

New this year, everyone<br />

who nominates a city will be<br />

entered into a drawing for a<br />

tablet outfitted for the outdoors.<br />

“Village parks have always<br />

been an integral part of<br />

family life in Orland Park,”<br />

said Trustee Dan Calandriello,<br />

chair of the village’s<br />

Recreation and Parks Committee.<br />

“We hope everyone<br />

annual Family Health Expo<br />

from 9 a.m.-noon Saturday,<br />

April 14, at the Sportsplex,<br />

The free and fun-filled<br />

day is to highlight the fitness<br />

needs of those both young<br />

and old.<br />

Hurley to stage Kids’ Health and Safety event<br />

State Rep. Fran Hurley is<br />

inviting families to attend<br />

a Kids’ Health and Safety<br />

Fun Fair from noon-3 p.m.<br />

Saturday, April 21, at the<br />

Orland Township Building,<br />

14807 S. Ravinia Ave. in<br />

Orland Park.<br />

Hurley is sponsoring the<br />

fair in conjunction with<br />

state Sen. Bill Cunningham<br />

and Orland Township Supervisor<br />

Paul O’Grady.<br />

It will feature several<br />

Debbi Weston certified as<br />

SilverSneakers instructor<br />

SilverSneakers, a national<br />

exercise program for<br />

seniors, has certified Debbi<br />

Weston as an instructor. She<br />

is a personal trainer at Anytime<br />

Fitness in Orland Park<br />

and Romeoville.<br />

Weston has customized<br />

her own SilverSneakers<br />

yoga classes through which<br />

those who need modifications<br />

will be coached for a<br />

chair style yoga routine. In<br />

this program she will slowly<br />

guide participants through<br />

nutrition issues; a chance to<br />

sample aerobic classes; and<br />

free blood pressure screenings,<br />

flexibility testing and<br />

injury screenings.<br />

New in 2018, guests are<br />

encouraged to dress comfortably<br />

exercise classes. This year’s<br />

expo also is to feature new<br />

vendors, along with skin<br />

health and safety booths<br />

from local and state government<br />

agencies that provide<br />

a wide range of safety education,<br />

health care and programs<br />

the Brookfield Zoo Animal<br />

Ambassadors to exhibit<br />

zoo animals for children<br />

to see and interact with;<br />

the Orland Park Police Department<br />

is to do free child<br />

fingerprinting; and Orland<br />

Township Health and Youth<br />

Services is slated to screen<br />

immunization records,<br />

poses, and those who find<br />

it easy are coached to “intensify”<br />

safely within their<br />

abilities.<br />

Weston also is certified as<br />

a personal trainer and as a<br />

yoga instructor. She teaches<br />

several SilverSneakers formats,<br />

including circuit training<br />

and “cardio,” which is<br />

described as low-impact aerobics<br />

training with strength<br />

and conditioning.<br />

Debbi launched the Silver<br />

Sneakers classes in the Orland<br />

Park location last October.<br />

She also has taught the<br />

cancer screenings done by<br />

Skin MD.<br />

Children also are in for<br />

fun, as the expo features face<br />

painting, a dino jump inflatable<br />

and an obstacle course.<br />

If children have bicycles,<br />

they are encouraged to bring<br />

them to have a safety check<br />

done by Performance Bicycle.<br />
