The Skokie Valley<br />

Chapter of the Daughters<br />

of the American Revolution<br />

recently announced<br />

the winners of its American<br />

History Essay contest,<br />

held on Feb. 15, at the Mikaelian<br />

Education Center<br />

in Wilmette. The 2017-<br />

2018 title for the essay<br />

contest was, “World War<br />

I: Remembering the war to<br />

end all wars.”<br />

The winners include students<br />

from Wilmette Junior<br />

High School including<br />

seventh-graders Annie von<br />

Dohlen (first place), Aleksander<br />

Acimovic (second)<br />

and Olivia Babolea (third).<br />

From the eighth-grade<br />

class at WJHS, the winners<br />

were Jaya Rohit Nambjar<br />

(first), Samuel Roberts<br />

(second) and Casey Bertocchi<br />

(third).<br />

The American History<br />

Essay Contest was established<br />

to encourage young<br />

people to think creatively<br />

about our nation’s great<br />

history and learn about<br />

history in a new light. This<br />

year marks the 100th Anniversary<br />

of the end of the<br />

war. “Imagine you are living<br />

in 1918. How did the<br />

war impact your daily living?<br />

Discuss the pros and<br />

cons of the changes, this<br />

war introduced to society.<br />

Will these changes further<br />

impact the future of the<br />

United States?”<br />

This contest is open to<br />

fifth hrough eighth-grade<br />

students in public, private,<br />

and parochial schools, and<br />

registered home-study<br />

programs. Each year, a<br />

selected topic for use during<br />

the academic year<br />

is announced, and contest<br />

instructions are published<br />

online and sent to<br />

schools by participating<br />

DAR chapters. Essays are<br />

judged for historical accuracy,<br />

adherence to the<br />

topic, organization of materials,<br />

interest, originality,<br />

spelling, grammar, punctuation,<br />

and neatness.<br />
