SCHUBERT
Trio No. 1 in B-flat major, D. 471
Octet for Strings and Winds in F major, D. 803
Written in September 1816, the first of Schubert’s
two string trios remained unfinished, with only
one completed movement and a rough sketch
of the second, marked andante sostenuto.
His Octet, on the other hand, completed while
the composer was struggling financially and
undermined by illness, is a work of great breadth.
Influenced by Beethoven and dedicated to
the skilled clarinetist Count Ferdinand Troyer,
it has always been a favourite of the chamber
music repertoire.
DOHNÁNYI Serenade for String Trio in C major,
Op. 10
DVOŘÁK Quartet for Piano and Strings in
E-flat major, Op. 87
Three composers inspired by their country’s folk
traditions are featured in this concert. Dohnanyi’s
Serenade alternates stunning virtuosity with
poignant lyricism in fine Hungarian tradition.
Z domoviny, popular pieces composed
while Smetana was afflicted by deafness,
evoke the composer’s native Bohemia, and
Dvořák’s Quartet Op. 87 enchants us with its
Gypsy-themed episodes.
Dvorák
Clara SCHUMANN Trio for Violin, Cello, and
Piano in G minor, Op. 17
Robert SCHUMANN Quartet for Violin, Viola,
Cello, and Piano in E-flat major, Op. 47
Clara and Robert Schumann were the Romantic
period’s most iconic couple. For them, music
was an expression of their deepest thoughts and
emotions and of their personal love-language.
Excerpts from their love letters, read by
Catherine Perrin, echo the pair of tenderly
romantic chamber works on this programme.
