Chaconne for Solo Violin in D minor, BWV 1004
(transcription for harpsichord)
Violin and harpsichord come together in the sublime
sonatas of J.S. Bach. Despite their differences, historically
the two instruments and their respective repertoires were
interchangeable, thanks to many skillful transcriptions.
The famous Toccata and Fugue for organ is a case in
point: some believe it was initially written for solo violin.
This concert provides an opportunity to hear this
celebrated work, possibly in its original version.
You can also hear Fabio Bonizzoni and his ensemble La Risonanza
perform in The Complete Bach Cantatas series on Sunday, October 28
J.S. BACH Mass in B minor, BWV 232
Because of its monumental proportions, the
Mass in B minor could not have been destined
to the liturgy. Nevertheless, this masterpiece
qualifies as the great Cantor’s legacy in the
domain of sacred music and recasts various
cantata arias and choruses he composed
in the last fifteen years of his life.
You can also hear the Ensemble Caprice perform in
The Complete Bach Cantatas series on Sunday, January 27
(see p. 29).
Presented in collaboration with Ensemble Caprice,
marking it’s 30th anniversary
The repertoire for unaccompanied cello is
relatively limited, and its apex is quite certainly
Bach’s six Suites. Their sequence of movements
follows period dance conventions, and Bach
exploits all the instrument’s expressive possibilities
within that framework. Kodály and Dutilleux also
produced works of outstanding virtuosity for solo
cello in the 20th century.
Jean-Guihen Queyras is one of the most
celebrated cellists of the present day.
This intimate concert showcases his mastery
and sensitivity as a performer.
“A work so immense,
like a great cathedral
whose colossal
proportions and
detailed chiselling
defy the imagination.”
Only a small number of concertos by Bach have
survived. Originally composed for the court of
Anhalt-Köthen around 1720, thankfully several of
them were repurposed for weekly concerts Bach
organized at the Zimmermann café in Leipzig,
fifteen years later. He also converted a few of
them into concertos for harpsichord(s).
Since 2012, the French ensemble Alia Mens has
specialized in the performance of works by Bach,
particularly his cantatas from the Weimar period
and his concertos for several harpsichords. This
concert provides an ideal opportunity to discover
these fine musicians in their Montreal debut.
You can also hear Ensemble Alia Mens perform in The
Complete Bach Cantatas series on Sunday, March 31
(see p. 30).
