We have been keeping a closer eye on the Facebook phenomenon of late. Until recently, companies in every sector saw social media as the way to go, and Facebook’s IPO was hailed as the next big thing; now the initial euphoria has evaporated somewhat. The performance of Facebook’s shares continues to disappoint, and doubts seem to be emerging about the substance and earnings potential of social media.
The optimism on which Facebook’s business model is based is reminiscent of the battle between bricks-and-mortar companies and internet firms around a decade ago. Then, as now, the new business models contain the nucleus of future trends, even though the future still has to pass the test of experience.
The emerging nations, chief among them China, may prove to be the drivers of the transition from the old world to the new. It is here that we can expect to see the fastest economic growth globally in the years ahead. Increasing purchasing power is raising the needs and expectations of consumers. According to Google’s «Our Mobile Planet 2012» study, China already has a higher market penetration than Germany when it comes to smartphones (33%). That will undoubtedly lead to changes in habits and behaviour that are especially relevant for the financial industry, trading as it does in intangible assets.
This issue of SOLUTIONS brings the two worlds together. The Avaloq project at Coutts and the new distribution models for the reinsurance sector represent the «classic» approaches. On the other side are trends such as social media in banking and insurance, and external asset managers in Asia, who still have to demonstrate their future viability.
But one thing that, for all the technological innovations, will remain key – and perhaps even gain in importance – is interpersonal relationships. That applies across corporate management (as strategy expert Harry Korine explains
in the «From Outside In» interview), client advisory services at banks and insurance companies – and, of course, the contact that Solution Providers maintains with its clients.
We hope you enjoy reading these fascinating assessments of the old world and the new, and look forward to our next face-to-face meeting.

https://laurentfairon.bandcamp.com/album/klangspektrum-klangexperimenten-unser-zeitgenossenThis is a collection of little known musics from various epochs of the 20th century, all featuring sound experiments of one kind or another. Stylistically varied, their common denominator is a will to experiment with whatever technology was available at the time, forming a wonderful tapestry of noises representative of a noisy century. They've been gathered in this collection as examples of a particular spirit of discovery and some of these recordings are quite rough, being documents and explorations rather than fully polished pieces of music. Admittedly, the flavor of analog overcomes the sheen of computer music.
Most of the tracks compiled here are hard to come by. Some come from library archives (Carl Stumpf, Francis Mazière), some come from specialist blogs or YouTube videos, some from artists' websites. Some have never been available on the web before and were culled from the compiler's own record collection (Wilhelm Keller, Halim El Dabh, Manolo Diaz, Otto Bernstein, John Herbert Leach).
The choice is entrirely personal and doesn't reflect main musical trends of the 20th century like jazz, electronic-, tape- and computer music, etc, which have been documented elsewhere. Rather, this compilation examines the quiet revolutions taking place during the 20th century, while individuals started thinking out of the box, when sound experiments flourished in places where innovation was least expected: children's musical education, anthroposophic circles, tropical jungles, stage music, film soundtrack, commercial ads, etc. Similarly, musical notes started emanating from unusual objects or apparatus like phonograph cylinders or flexi discs ; architecture was sonified ; numbers eventually became sound carriers.
In the past centuries, music innovators have always been curious and adventurous, but their number was limited. During the 20th century, however, statistics exploded and the sheer number of sound innovators rocketed, leading to a myriad of experiments inside or outside traditional music circles. KlangSpektrum seeks to reflect this multiplicity.

There is nothing quite like a fall Saturday in Auburn, Alabama. From Tiger Walk to Toomer’s Corner, our fans and our traditions make Auburn’s gameday experience the best in college football. As good as Auburn’s gameday experience is, we are always striving to make it better. The Auburn Athletics Department has been hard at work during the offseason to give fans what they told us they wanted—more tailgating, more parking and more memories to share. Thanks to a terrific collaboration with the Auburn University Administration, we have added a net gain of 2,000 free parking spaces for the 2013 season. We’ve also opened up more areas for tailgating that in previous years were not available. Whether you want free parking and tailgating available on a first-come, first-served basis or hassle-free, guaranteed gameday options, we’ve got something for everyone. I encourage you to study the maps in this Fan Guide to make your parking and tailgating plans for the upcoming season. You can also find a wealth of information on AUBGameday.com. Last year, we expanded our gameday events and activities beyond those autumn Saturdays to create a great weekend experience in Auburn. Be on the lookout for more gameday weekend activities in 2013. The information in this Fan Guide is intended to help you plan your travel to Auburn this year. Please take a few moments to review it, and feel free to share it with others. Thank you for your support. We look forward to the dawn of an exciting new era in Auburn football history as Head Coach Gus Malzahn’s team takes the field. God Bless and War Eagle!

A series of graphic works exploring the morphology of matter in natural and technological processes. I started sketching in buses, metro trains, cafes and during dull construction meetings. The goal was to synchronize with certain space-time locations and reveal their inner genius through simple black and white ghraphics. Accessibility of a sketchbook and black fineliner played the main role in choosing the technique. A background in architecture added dimensionality, variety and depth into the creative process. Letting the hand drive itself and accepting any result was key to producing these artworks. Pronouncing this result through applying character and texture to existing contours was the more concious act riddled with choice and responsibility. For a long time now, ballancing these two activities has become a way of meditation for me, bringing focus and harmony into life.
Consumers in the U.S. and the UK are increasingly adopting mobile and online banking, according to a 2014 survey by Cognitive Biometrics Firm BioCatch.
In both countries, the survey reveals that more users are performing banking transactions over the web and through a mobile device, at 36 per cent and 29 per cent respectively, which shows an over take from traditional means such as telephone and branch banking.
“We’ve seen an uptick in online and mobile adoption rates among banking customers over the past few years and expect this trend to continue at a rapid pace as banks continue to improve their functionality,” BioCatch VP of Products Oren Kedem said.
But while this is a positive development in the online banking space, the study also shows that a number of consumers who have not yet delved into online banking are experiencing a number of pain points in using such services. 46 per cent cited limited functionality and 36 per cent listed inconvenient login and authentication processes.
A lack of security is also an issue and is considered as one of the greatest obstacles to adoption: 61 per cent indicated that fear of hacking was their main reason for avoiding online banking.
“The main thing that banks need to contend with when adding functionality is the increased chance for security breaches that comes along with it,” Kedem adds.
BioCatch conducted the survey with 600 banking customers from the top five banks in both the U.S. and the UK.
Resources: Review the City of Kelsey under the Government tab of the Virtual Organization site. Access the public records of Kelsey under the City Government to familiarize yourself with the city’s budget and financial report. Review the following scenario: You work as a budget director for the mayor of Kelsey and recently you have been getting numerous complaints from citizens about the increase in crime in the City of Kelsey and public demands for more police officers. The population of Kelsey has grown, creating increases in crime. The mayor has communicated to you as the budget director that this past year is the highest increase in crime in the city’s history. The federal government has reduced the federal pass-through money for the state, and the budgeting group needs to revamp the budget for the coming year. In addition to the limited budget, there has been a recent budgetary reform at the federal level, which has put additional pressure on local police agencies to use the federal money before it expires. The state Chief’s of Police Association is lobbying the state for a 15% public safety tax for a temporary 3-year period in order to make up the deficit. The state legislature and local governments are wary of adding any additional new taxes on citizens. In addition, the state’s Sierra Club organization is putting pressure on state and local government to hire less police officers, build more prisons, and develop the state’s infrastructure. The mayor has pointed out that the likelihood of getting any increase in tax money from the state is slim. The mayor has called a meeting with your budget staff, the Chief of Police and staff to address the following issues and come up with a solution that is politically feasible. In the meeting, the mayor reminds them that if he or she is not re-elected the new incumbent will replace their jobs.
Create a 1,400-1,750- word report in which you, as the budget officer, which details the following:
• How the changes affect the fiscal cycle of your budgeting.
• How the preparation, execution, and evaluation of the budgeting cycle would change.
• Your budgeting approach based on the changes and the reasons.
• Differences of the chosen budgeting approach from those not used.
• A plan to address the crime issue.
• Summary of the cost-benefit analysis of your plan. Format your paper according to APA standards.
