Still, this lags well behind the US where the average tech investment was $13.32m in the same period. Confidence and valuations are riding high in the US right now with a c. 45% increase in average deal size over the same period in 2009. There are some eye-watering valuations in the Valley right now but with the exit market opening right up VCs are much more confident and bold than they have been in recent times. There are some positives in Europe as well. The trend is up from a low point of $5.5m in Q1 2010. There are now some deals being done that are of a comparable scale to those in Silicon Valley. We have had two $billion tech IPOs in the last few months and we also have had a number of $100m+ ‘venture’ deals close as well. There has been much talk about the need to plant the seeds for a burgeoning tech industry in the UK – and in other European countries as well.
