Welcome home
We welcome the American Society of Travel Agents and we share our excitement to be
hosting the ASTA Destination EXPO 2018, this major event of the American travel
industry leaders.
Greece is a global attractive 365-day destination that provides the ideal setting for the ASTA members to meet with the Greek
travel professionals and experts, and explore all the authentic thematic experiences and tourism products offered in all 13
Greek regions, as well as all the world-famous but also the new Greek destinations that we now promote. Even more, the
ASTA Expo in Athens presents the opportunities for new business that arise in this period of continuous and dynamic
growth for the Greek tourism sector.
Through our national tourism policy and a very effective marketing plan implemented by the GNTO, we achieved recordbreaking
results in all tourism figures for three consecutive years. International arrivals grew by six million, at rates of
growth almost double the global average. In 2017, Greece attracted more than 30 million tourists including cruise arrivals
and 2018 has begun exceptionally with a double-digit growth from all our traditional and new markets. The US market is
a priority to us, and with targeted actions and initiatives, including promotion and the establishment of direct flights, we
achieved significant growth in arrivals in all recent years.
A long-standing member of the European family, Greece stands out as the most diverse complex of islands in the Med, with
16 thousand kilometers of coastline, one of the longest in the world, but even more for its rich history and culture, as the
birthplace of Democracy and the Olympic games, arts, philosophy, sports and science. Our country is an open museum
with 18 UNESCO world heritage sites, numerous ancient monuments and pilgrimage treasures, and a civilization of
thousands of years with global radiance. Our visitors enjoy their vacation in cosmopolitan destinations, but also new
hidden paradises, overall more than 100 islands each with its own captivating beauty. Greece's crystal clear safe waters are
ideal for cruises, yachting and diving. The close proximity allows visitors to experience multiple destinations in one trip.
The mainland with more than 3000 authentic villages and destinations, ski resorts, mythical mountains and its rich
nature, engage our visitors in several outdoor activities year-round. Greece also tops Europe in terms of thermal springs
with unique healing properties and offers high- end services in health and wellness, based on our long medicinal tradition,
as the home of Hippocrates, father of modern medicine, the perfect weather and our rich gastronomy reflecting the healthy
yet so tasty Greek diet, with locally grown, organic famous Greek products. Athens, Salonica and other vibrant cities emerge
as top choices for MICE and city vacation, providing endless options for festivals, arts and recreation, entertainment,
famous nightlife, high-end shopping, excellent food as well as for daily cruises to nearby islands. And last but not least, to
mention the genuine warm hospitality offered generously to our visitors, who feel like home away from home.
For ASTA's members and delegates we have scheduled amazing fam trips and sightseeing tours in our beautiful country to
choose from and see first-hand all the fascinating experiences and various aspects of the mainland and the islands that
they will introduce to the American travelers. I invite you all to experience the best Greece has to offer, as a top-of-the mind
365-day destination for unforgettable lifetime experiences.
With these thoughts, I convey to you my best wishes for a very successful ASTA Destination Expo in Athens.
Stronger Together
It is with great pleasure that the board of FedHATTA and I welcome the members
of ASTA for the 2018 ASTA Destination Expo in Athens. We are delighted to have
you as our guests and look forward to showing you all the treasures the Greek
tourism industry has to offer you and your clients back home. We are particularly
pleased to sit down together as travel agents. As agents we have the power of local knowledge, and online
booking can never replace the service and knowledge of the seasoned travel agent.
A classic destination and an unrivaled brand, Greece has welcomed American visitors for centuries. Early
American travelers to Greece came to see for themselves the monuments of the ancient democracy that had
inspired the American founding fathers. Today, the Classical architecture and archaeological sites of Greece
remain a major draw, but our beautiful coasts, with their gleaming white villages and crystal-clear waters have
equally become a must-see for visitors. Unlike the days of old, you can now find luxury amenities in all corners of
Greece, and visitors are discovering more of what the country offers, such as natural spas, sports, yachting, and
the famous Mediterranean cuisine.
FedHATTA has spearheaded initiatives to expand the 365-day experiences for visitors with its Dodeka platform,
which in cooperation with our partners, aims to highlight the hidden treasures of Greece. The mild Greek
climate, the astonishingly varied geography of the country, and its long and rich history make the tourism
possibilities in Greece almost endless. You can snowboard down the mountain of Zeus, run a marathon on the
original route, play golf in winter, follow in the footsteps of St. Paul, explore the unique Greek wines, or
experience the time-honored traditions of the olive harvest. Eco-tourism, MICE, active holidays, yachting,
gastronomy, wildlife preserves, or culture, whatever your inclination, you can find it in Greece.
Another axis in FedHATTA's activities is to forge and expand international cooperation in the tourism industry.
Only by exchanging ideas and knowing each other's markets can we move the industry forward and provide the
best possible service to our clients. We see the ASTA Destination Expo as a groundbreaking opportunity to get to
know your priorities and build lasting relationships for fruitful cooperation now and in the future. We hope to
expand opportunities for American travel professionals to take FAM trips to Greece, and meanwhile, in
partnership with ASTA and Northevents, we will be coming to see you with a roadshow in May, going to New
York, Boston and Washington D.C., and also at important US tradeshows.
We hope that you will explore and enjoy all that our beautiful country has to offer and become true friends of
Greece, in the spirit of the longstanding friendship and shared values of our two countries. We wish you a
successful and enjoyable Destination Expo, and look forward to welcoming you, your families and your friends
in Greece again in the future.
Megara and Mandra in the west to Oropos and Marathon in the northeast, as
well as Lavriotiki, the Saronic islands, Trizina and Poros, and the island of
Attica is the multi-dimensional tourist destination to offer a wide range of
options whether it comes to natural tourism, gastronomical tourism, religious
A unique, multifaceted land of civilization, history, mythology and philosophy,
The City of the Goddess
Athens
18 G R E E C E O N A I R
When the city was rst founded, the
Athenians invited the gods and goddesses
to compete for the position of special
protector of the city. Poseidon struck the
ground with his trident and a sparkling spring
appeared with fresh water. Athena brought
forth an olive tree and won the competition,
and that is how the city was named Athens,
according to myth.
A large part of the town's historic center has
been converted into a 3-kilometer
pedestrian zone (the largest in Europe),
leading to the major archaeological sites
and forming an archaeological park that
largely reproduces the ancient landscape
and layout. However, the enchantments of
Athens are not limited to the unique
archaeological sites. The city offers
contemporary culture as well, countless
music venues, a hopping bar scene,
wonderful restaurants and plenty of
picturesque neighborhoods for a stroll.
The downtown areas of Plaka, Monastiraki
and Psyrri are traditional neighborhoods,
which have evolved into one of the most
important centers of the city's nightlife, with
scores of bars, tavernas, ouzeris, and clubs.
In Kolonaki, a stone's throw from Syntagma
Square, you will nd many shops, as well as
restaurants, bars and cafés. Above Kolonaki
rises Lycabettus Hill, reachable by a
funicular. From the top of Lycabettus, you
can let yourself be captivated by the
stunning panoramic views of Athens.
Dominating the central Syntagma Square is
the Greek Parliament, which was originally
the royal palace. Behind the parliament lie
the former royal gardens, now a public park,
known as the National Garden. Through the
National Garden you reach the impressive
Zappeion Mansion (1874-1888). From there
you can continue towards the presidential
m a n s i o n a n d t h e P a n a t h e n a i k o n
(Kallimarmaro) Stadium, where the rst
Olympic Games in modern history were held
(1896).
It is also worthwhile to visit the southern
suburbs, located on the coast of the Saronic
Gulf. They offer many opportunities to take a
walk along the seaside, while you will also
nd many beautiful organized and free
beaches, large shopping centers and
nightclubs (especially during the summer).
You can also visit the spectacular Stavros
Niarchos Cultural Center in Faliro. The
recently opened center houses, among
other things, the national opera and the
national library, but also offers many
interesting exhibitions and cultural events.
The Acropolis Museum is a magnificent
Parthenon itself. This impressive five-storey
building handsomely displays the riches that
adorned the Acropolis in its heyday:
stunning sculptures, statues, free-standing
objects, and 36 of the original 115 frieze
panels that remain in Greece. On the lower
levels, visitors can peer through glass panels
at the ongoing excavations of an ancient
Athenian neighbourhood and an early
Christian settlement. The museum’s
crowning glory is the top-floor Parthenon
the temple, and a virtual replica of the cella
of the Parthenon, which can be seen from
History
Athens Authentic
Marathon
Among all the Olympic sports events, the
Marathon Race stands out, as it was born
from a real-life historic and heroic event. It
was a true triumph accomplished by a
news-bearing foot soldier from Ancient
Athens, who in 490 BC ran all the way from
the battleeld in Marathon to Athens to
announce-with his dying breath- the victory
of the Greeks against the Persians.
Every 2nd Sunday in November, this historic
race is repeated on the original route from
Marathon to Athens. The race culminates in
the glorious Kallimarmaro Stadium, where
the rst modern Olympics were held in 1896.
You will feel like a true ancient hero when
you cross the nish line in this beautiful
marble stadium, where, at the 1896
Olympics, Spyros Louis won the Marathon to
the ecstatic cheers of the Greek audience.
In early November the weather is usually
sunny and pleasant in Athens, with a slight
crispness of fall in the air. It is a perfect time of
year to see the city and all it has to offer, so
plan some extra days around the Marathon
to take in the sights, perhaps enjoy some of
the famous nightlife, and indulge in the
runner-friendly Greek delights of the table.
Attica
Attica
where Past
Athens, the capital of Greece, sits on the
Attica Peninsula. Home to some of the
most spectacular monuments of Ancient
Greece, the Acropolis and the Temple of
Poseidon at Sounio, you will equally nd all
the amenities of modern, cosmopolitan life
here, as well as picturesque islands just a
short boat ride from the port of Piraeus.
28 G R E E C E O N A I R
The coastline from Athens to Cape Sounio is
known as the Athens Riviera. Luxury hotels,
marinas, and sh tavernas are just steps from
the glorious beaches that stretch out one
after the other. In summer, Athenians often
For a short get-away, take a jaunt to one of
the islands just off the Attica coast: Poros,
by artists, both Greek and foreign, these
islands have an atmosphere all their own.
Hydra is known for its ban on cars and the
main mode of transportation on the island
remains the donkey. All these islands can be
Piraeus. Explore the past and the present
Piraeus is surrounded by the sea and this
If you pass through on your way to the
and take in some of the sights. Visit the
small port of Mikrolimano, full of shing
Also worth visiting is the Zea Marina, where
The imposing ancient palaces in Knossos,
Faistos, and Malia date to the Minoan
civilization, which reached its peak around
1950 B.C. The Minoans were accomplished
mariners and traded their already then
famous cypress and agricultural products
far and wide. Subsequent periods all left
their mark on the island's architecture. The
main towns of Chania, Rethymno, and
Heraklion show the inuence of the Arabs,
Venetians, Byzantines, and Ottomans, who
all ruled the island at different points in
history.
Crete, being in the south of the Aegean, has
a wonderfully mild climate, and the island
also boasts a varied and beautiful
landscape. This means that the possibilities
for hiking, golf, water sports and any other
outdoor activities you enjoy are virtually
endless. Kayak along the sparkling white
beaches, or try scuba diving in the crystalclear
waters. Join an outdoor yoga class or
The Cretans are rightfully proud of their local
food products, wines, and cuisine. The mild
climate means that vegetables can be
grown year-round, the mountains are home
to the sheep and goats who produce the
wonderful cheeses of Crete, and the
surrounding sea offers up its bounty of sh
and seafood. Olive groves dot the
landscape everywhere you turn, producing
some of the premiere olive oils of Greece.
When you return from the beach or come
back after a long hike in the gorges, you will
always nd a feast, accompanied by the
island's robust wines, waiting for you on the
table.
Those who visit Crete often come back,
again and again. The wild and beautiful
excellent food draw you in, and there is
something new to do and explore around
every corner. One trip is never enough to
the total tourist flow in Greece. An island set of tourist destinations of unique
beauty and particularity that cover the whole interest range of the visitor and
The islands of the Cyclades and the Dodecanese, islands of unparalleled natural beauty and uniqueness. So
blue, where myth, history and reality coexist in an impressive mosaic. Contrasts are their charm. Uniqueness is
their identity.
In order to maintain and further enhance its high performance in the tourism sector, the South Aegean Region
focuses on the development of strategic partnerships by opening channels between the islands of the South
Aegean and the American tourism market, a dynamically emerging market for tourism in our Region with great
potential.
The ATHENS ASTA DESTINATION EXPO 2018 event is a unique opportunity to show the comparative
advantages of the South Aegean to the largest and most important travel agents in America, as they will get to
Our goal is to show the American tourism market what the South Aegean really is. Unique, versatile,
insurmountable. A safe, hospitable destination. Everything one could ask from his/her vacation, generously
offered. Dozens of beautiful islands, each with its special features, that meet every demand and can turn any
holiday into a very special and particular personal experience.
This "uniqueness" is being promoted globally through the implementation of the South Aegean Region's
Strategic Tourism Development Plan; also, through its awarded title as European Region of Gastronomy 2019,
the Region reveals the uniqueness of its flavors and aromas in an immense symposium and shares age-old
secrets with its visitors - co-diners in an exciting delicious journey of five senses.
The distinction of the South Aegean as European Region of Gastronomy 2019 is yet another proof of its
uniqueness, yet another intense challenge for the visitor to get to know our islands through their cuisine. The
gastronomy in our islands is an authentic travel experience!
We do not stop here. We constantly enrich our identity with all those elements that accurately represent our true
In spite of the similarities, each island has its
Mykonos draws an international crowd, and
of the simplest things. As you pick up a piece
of marble on the beach, you can't help but
wonder if it perhaps came from an ancient
temple.
The sea, that gentle blue, is ever-present on
the islands. For thousands of years the
islanders have lived on and from the sea.
The South Aegean islands form a chain
across the Aegean, making this the perfect
place for yachting. Charter a yacht and let
the winds and your mood decide which
island to see next, or cast anchor in a
secluded cove for an afternoon swim. In
many of the islands, you can also hire small
boats for the day to take you to hidden
beaches and sea caves.
A classic and iconic destination, the South
Aegean will welcome you with the worldrenowned
Greek hospitality and cuisine.
Whether you are looking for nightlife or
about 3500 years ago, which destroyed its
highly advanced Minoan civilization. Over
The volcano also created spectacular
beaches, some with red or black sand,
others with volcanic pebbles. After a swim,
you can wind your way up the picturesque
streets, to take in the famous sunset from a
Where the Trip of the Olympic Flame Begins
Dear Friends,
The Region of Western Greece consists of the prefectures of Achaia, Ilia and
Aitoloakarnania. Three areas with great history, tradition and culture, as
well as particular developments in the arts, science and education. The
history of the Region is lost in the depths of the ages, when Ancient Olympia
was the cradle of Olympism. The place where the trip of the Olympic Flame
begins today with the lighting ceremony, for the launch of modern Olympic
Games.
However, the Region of Western Greece has not only to show a glorious past.
The natural beauty of Achaia, Ilia and Aitoloakarnania is a tourist
attraction throughout the year. The ski resort of Kalavryta, the tour around
the mountainous Nafpaktia, Aetoliko, the so-called Venice of Western
Greece, the enchanting lagoon of Messolongi, the beautiful Tourlida,
intrigue and invite the visitor all year round. Additionally, the impressive
beaches of Ilia are a major attraction during the summer season as well as
the picturesque fishing villages of Aitoloakarnania, where traditional
snacks are a gastronomic mystagogy.
Least but not last, there is Patras, the capital of Achaia, which only recently
was awarded as a European Destination of Excellence (EDEN) in the field
of Cultural Tourism for 2016-2017. Patras, is a modern communications
and commercial center with vibrant squares, numerous entertainment
venues, a variety of cultural activities and the organizer of the largest
Mediterranean carnival. The European standards new road axes that
connect the city of Patras with Athens and the newly built harbor, the gate of
Greece to the west, as it has been characterized in the past, rank it among
the top destinations for anyone who visits Greece.
The Region of Western Greece proceeds with a strategic plan and a vision
towards conquering the future. With the use of technology and modern
marketing tools, in Greece and abroad, we manage to get a leading role in
international tourism.
I invite you to visit our Region, getting to know its beauties, the warmth of
people and their unique hospitality.
Olympia
TAKE A JOURNEY BACK IN TIME
TO THE GLORY YEARS OF THE OLYMPIC GAMES
Temple of Zeus
A day's visit to the birthplace of the
Olympic Games will not suffice, so much is
there to absorb. The greatness of the
ancient Greek history never ceases to
astound us. In this corner of the
Peloponnese, the father of gods and men
was worshipped; this is the site of Zeus'
most magnificent sanctuary. The
centrepiece of the shrine, his gold and
ivory statue, crafted by Pheidias, stood
13.5m tall and was one of the Seven
Wonders of the Ancient World. It no longer
exists but you will be able to admire
firsthand the famous Hermes by Praxiteles.
Both the site and the museum offer a
luminous picture of the splendour, the glory
and the breadth of a civilisation that gave
so much to the world. You're on the fast
track for a time-travel adventure through
history, through the glory of Ancient
Greece. On your mark. Get set. Go!
The Olympic Games, all for
the pleasure of Zeus
London, Beijing, Athens… Retracing the
history of the Olympic Games back to 776
BC, you arrive at the starting line, where it
all began in this gentle, wooded valley of
the Alpheios River in the Peloponnese,
where Zeus' most important sanctuary was
located. In his honour, every four years, this
was the scene of an event in which the
whole of the Greek-speaking world took
part.
The Olympic Games were more than
athletic competitions. They were
panhellenic festivals and took precedence
over everything else occurring at that time,
even wars. During the period of the
Games and allowing for travel time, any
hostilities between the normally fractious
Greek city-states was suspended and the
A tour of the Ancient Stadium
of the Olympic Games
One of the most significant archaeological
sites in Greece, the ancient stadium was
where the most important competitions
took place. Pass under the arched
entrance and you're in a place where
countless VIPs and ordinary people (but
not women) rooted for their heroes. The
stadium you see today was built around
the same time as the temple of Zeus, the
5th century BC.
The hippodrome for chariot races lay to
the south of the stadium. Still standing are
ruins left from a later age: baths and villas,
like the one Roman emperor Nero had
constructed as a private residence when
he attended. After Christianity became
the official religion of the Roman Empire,
the Olympic Games gradually lost their
prestige since they were considered a
pagan festival. They ceased completely in
393 AD when the emperor Theodosius I
decreed them unlawful. Olympia never
The Hermes of Praxiteles,
a priceless masterpiece
In Olympia's archaeological museum you'll
come face to face with one of the
greatest marble sculptures of all time,
Praxiteles' Hermes, one of the most
important exhibits in the museum. The god
is leaning against the trunk of a tree. In his
left arm, he's cradling the infant Dionysos.
It is the epitome of Greek beauty, balance
and craftsmanship. Apart from the Hermes,
the museum contains dozens of other finds
from the site, dating from prehistoric times
to the early Christian era, when the Games
were outlawed. Look out for the Nike of
Paionios and the monumental friezes from
the Temple of Zeus, which depict the
chariot race between Pelops and
Oinomaos and the fight between Lapiths
and Centaurs.
The Hermes of Praxiteles.
regained the glory and allure it had
enjoyed as host of the Games.
But on 18 August 2004, when Athens
hosted the Modern Games, those
wonderful years came back. The Stadium
in Olympia witnessed a reenactment of an
ancient sport, the shot put. Both men and
women competed, some 1,611 years after
the last Games took place there. And of
course, Olympia is still the place where the
Olympic Flame is lit each Olympiad.
Guide to the archaeological site of
Olympia
The Sanctuary of Zeus was called the Altis
or 'sacred wood'. A walled area, it
enclosed many monuments and buildings
beside the Temple of Zeus. You'll see
arcades, smaller temples, statue pedestals.
Some of the structures were residential,
others had an administrative or ceremonial
function. Zeus' temple stood at its heart.
Can you imagine being faced with his
enormous statue, carved from ivory, gold
flashing in the sunlight? Could there have
been any doubt that he ruled over
heaven and earth?
Thessaloniki, the city of our heart
Dear friends,
Let us introduce you to our breathtaking city, Thessaloniki!
On behalf of the entire city and people of Thessaloniki, thank you
FEDHATTA for hosting such an extremely important conference in Athens, ASTA.
This conference occurs at a time when the Greek tourism industry is working diligently to welcome an
increasing number of American tourists.
Thessaloniki is more than just a spectacular place to live and visit. It is Greece's second largest city, the
capital of Macedonia, and, with a multicultural city that goes back over 2300 years, has a diverse culture
that includes exquisite cuisine, art, culture, recreation, and more! Thessaloniki (also called “Salonika”) is
near luxury resorts, Greece's legendary beaches, and a cosmopolitan city that meets the International Silk
Road. In addition, it is an active, vibrant, and safe city, full of people young and old, with shopping that is
both traditional and luxurious.
We say, “Thessaloniki - many stories, one heart“ since it is a city with countless stories to tell, whether you
are a native or a tourist. Even National Geographic magazine called Thessaloniki “one of the 20 must-see
destinations” and “top 10 nightlife destinations!”
The timing could not be better! The city is working at an intense pace to prepare for September 2018's 83
Thessaloniki International Fair where the United States of America will be the honored country. All
indicators show that participation and visitors are exceeding expectations. It seems as if the ancient gods of
Greece are working hard as well to create an environment bringing our two countries even closer!
Another major development has been direct flights from New York to Thessaloniki, making air travel even
easier!
Thessaloniki is also the origin of a great number of Greek expatriates, many of them living in USA. A strong
bond already exists and we will try to capitalized on this as much as possible.
Thessaloniki Tourism Organization, the official board of the region, which I have the honor to represent as
president, encourages the strengthening of this bond since we are the first to organize trips to American tour
operators in order to get them acquainted with the area and the travelling advantages it offers.
I believe that we share a common goal. American tourists of all ages, wondering around with a wide smile on
their faces, enjoying the seafront and staring across the Mount of Gods, Olympus. It is of our understanding
that American students come closer with ancient Greek culture during their first year of college studies when
they come across Aristotle - the man who was born and lived in the area, the man who taught Alexander the
Great, the genius philosopher.
Before I welcome you to Thessaloniki, the city of our heart, I invite you to visit our official website
Thessaloniki, the bustling port that has
connected east and west for millennia, is a
true princess among cities, named after the
sister of Alexander the Great, who founded
the city in 315 BC.
Always a lively and bustling city of trade,
Thessaloniki was home to people of many
faiths, ethnicities and a profusion of
languages could be heard in its streets.
Today the city remains an important center
for trade, and is known for its interesting music
scene, creative start-ups, and great
restaurants.
The best way to enjoy the city is by foot, and
you mustn't miss a stroll down the wide
mapped routes for trekking and hiking.
Lastly, there is, of course, the famed, deepblue
sea of Greece, with the opportunity to
sail, kite-surf, and dive. You can nd facilities
for these activities both on secluded islands
and right in the city of Athens, on the Athens
Riviera, stretching from the city all the way to
Cape Sounio.
Winter Joys
in Greece
Decorated Christmas trees and little ships
ornament houses and streets. Bells are
ringing and children sing Christmas carols
in towns and villages. Winter festivals in
honor of the Greek god Dionysus are still
celebrated in many parts of Macedonia
and Thrace. Some involve bonres, while
others feature picturesque processions,
traditional music and much merry-making.
88 G R E E C E O N A I R
Large areas of woodland with snowcapped
peaks, forest trails and old
pathways, rapid rivers crowned with stone
bridges and striking lakes like Orestiada,
Ioanninon, Plastiras, and Kerkini create the
ideal setting for having a truly memorable
winter holiday in Greece.
When people think of Greece, the rst thing
that comes to mind is probably the
spectacular beaches, but Greece equally
has glorious mountains. In winter the
mountains get good snow cover and you
will nd ski resorts in many parts of Greece.
Some of these, like Arachova and
Parnassos, are surprisingly close to Athens.
This easily allows for a lovely city break,
combined with a couple of days of skiing or
snowboarding.
Below the mountains, you will nd relatively
mild weather in winter, making a winter trip
an ideal opportunity to take long walks,
explore archaeological sites and take in
some of the contemporary cultural life that is
not usually available in the summertime. This
is the perfect time to experience some
rebetiko music in a traditional club or enjoy
some opera at the new opera house at the
Stavros Niarchos Cultural Center.
Gastronomy & Wine
Healthy &
Delicious
The Mediterranean diet is ranked as one of
the most healthful in the world, but more
importantly it is also delicious. Greeks are
generally spoiled with tasty food, thanks to
the incomparable raw materials of the
region-fresh sh and seafood, an
abundance of fresh fruits and vegetables,
olive oil, herbs, artisanal cheeses, and
countless other joys.
Greek dishes are often deceptively simple,
focused on bringing out the natural avors
of the excellent food products. Greek
cuisine has four secrets: high-quality fresh
ingredients, careful use of herbs and
spices, the famous Greek olive oil, and
simplicity. Greek olive oil accompanies
almost all Greek dishes. It is used
abundantly in most of them, is of excellent
quality, and good for your health besides.
Gastronomy & Wine
Sharing good company with friends is an
important part of Greek meals. The sharing
usually extends to the dishes as well. It is
common to order a profusion of mezedes,
small dishes, and salads, which get passed
up and down the table for everyone to
taste. This can include the main course as
well, with platters of grilled sardines or fried
octopus being placed in the middle of the
table. The wine is often local and served in
pitchers.
Greece is among the oldest wineproducing
regions in the world. The growing,
making, and drinking of wine are woven into
the local culture. Greece boasts 300 grape
varieties that are unique to the area, of
which the most important are Xinomavro
and Agiorgitiko for reds and for the whites
Assyrtico and Moscholero. Assyrtico is
native to Santorini, which is justly famous for
the excellence of its wines. You will nd wine
tastings available in many places, as well as
wine bars where knowledgeable staff will
guide you through the Greek varietals.
Most visitors to Greece quickly become
devoted converts to the cuisine and the
local wines. The simplicity and clean,
bracing avors, accompanied by a chilled
Moscholero and good company, are hard
to resist. At the end of the meal, you often
get treated to a selection of local fruits in
season along with traditional sweets. But
don't forget to sample the large variety of
delicious and unique Greek cheeses as well,
of which feta is the queen.
In the summer, you will nd Greek cooking
classes in many locations, as well as wine
tastings of local wines. A cooking class can
be fun way to take a small taste of Greece
home with you. And yet, sipping a glass of
ouzo or wine with grilled octopus and other
Greek delicacies, while sitting under the
shade of a tree in a small taverna by the sea
is an unforgettable experience that is hard
to reproduce elsewhere. You will be back!
as SKAL Club, established in 1932.
Tourism Promotion
The promotion of Greece by the
GNTO has been and continues
to be accomplished through a
combination of advertising and
public relations activities, with
the GNTO ofces abroad being
the main promotion vehicle. For
this reason, the GNTO has
proceeded to the establishment
of foreign services, resulting in
ve ofces operating already in
1962, in Brussels, Paris, Frankfurt,
London and Rome.
From Heritage to Branding
What is the role of the past in the present and the future?
How are contemporary creators inspired by the ancient Greek culture?
In which ways could business and culture be combined?
The non-prot organisation Branding Heritage addresses these questions, introducing the rst global
community of prominent creators inspired by the ancient Greek culture. At the same time, BH
introduces a network of researchers, who support its vision and offer their knowledge on the
importance and global impact of Greek art and culture.
Branding Heritage, through its online platform, activities and events, informs and raises awareness on
the dynamic of cultural entrepreneurship. At challenging times for the country, heritage plays an
active role in the global scene of design, fashion and gastronomy and proves that the contemporary
Greek creation can be competitive in the global market. BH supports and promotes brands and
creators sharing the cultural wealth of Greece, going beyond barriers and borders, representing a
vigorous "Rebranding" of the country.
