Lady - A Women’s Expo to return April

21 to Tinley Park Convention Center

Freelance Reporter

It is a Mother’s Day tradition

unlike any other.

Lady - A Women’s

Expo, presented by 22nd

Century Media and Planet

Fitness, is set to return

from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday,

April 21, at the Tinley

Park Convention Center,

18451 Convention Center

Drive in Tinley Park.

The annual event also

is sponsored by the Chicago

Sky, Ingalls Health

System and Celebrity

The free event has more

than 100 vendors slated to

attend this year — covering

health and wellness to

fashion and beauty, food

to financial planning —

making it the largest Lady

expo to date, according to

Heather Warthen, chief

events officer at 22nd

Century Media.

“The nice thing about

this expo that I see year to

year is that we see a lot of

girls getting together and

starting a ladies day out,”

Warthen said. “We also

draw moms, daughters

and granddaughters. That’s

what makes me happy. It’s

a great prelude into Mother’s

Day weekend and a

great chance for women of

all ages to bond.”

Among the highlights

this year will be an expanded

roster of vendors,

as well as entertainment

“I think people like to

see what the vendors have

to offer,” Warthen said.

“It’s a great opportunity,

because we have an entire

stage of cooking demos,

which is back again this

Freelance Reporter

A lot of people will be

strolling through the

aisles Saturday, April 21,

for the fifth annual Lady

– A Women’s Expo. We

asked Heather Warthen,

22nd Century Media’s

chief events officer and

resident expert expo

authority, for some

“hacks” for those who

plan to attend, so they

can make best use of

their time there.

1. Scout ahead: Take a

look at the event’s

Eventbrite webpage

before you head to

the convention center.

It will have the full

list of vendors, an

event schedule for

the fitness classes,

year. We have some great

local chefs, and you can

pick up some new cooking

tips. I know that was a

huge draw last year.”

She also pointed to the

main stage attractions,

such as Danni Allen —

the winner of Season 14

of “The Biggest Loser”

— and plenty free fitness

classes, including cardio

and yoga.

Also returning to the

expo this year is Silk Avenue,

from whom attendees

can purchase custommade

“We’ve got something

for everybody,” Warthen

said. “There’s plenty to

do, and I think people

cooking demos

and main stage

entertainment. Map

out some things you

definitely want to do

and save yourself

some idle time.

2. Arrive early to get

some swag: Have

you ever heard the

expression, “The early

bird gets the worm?”

Well, in this case,

early arrivers have

the best chance at

receiving a free gift

bag. There only are

500 of these bad

boys, so the closer you

arrive to 9 a.m., the

better your chance to

pick one up.

3. Be a trendsetter;

go against the flow:

Warthen says that

oftentimes, expogoers

tend to follow a

similar path through

the aisles, leading to

some congestion at

certain spots. One way

to avoid that? Be a

trailblazer and walk in

the opposite direction,

by working from the

back to the front.

4. Don’t be a hero,

choose comfort

over style: If those

boots aren’t made

for walking, leave

them at home.

With approximately

100 vendors and

some serious

odds are your daily

step count is going

to exceed your

goal. Wear some

comfortable shoes.

like seeing the variety of

vendors we get. It’s not all

clothing or food or home

remodeling or repairs; we

really do try to bring in

a variety that people will

New this year will be

Tracy DeGraaf, who authored

the 2010 book,

“Laugh Anyway Mom:

Hilarious Survival Stories

From a Mother of Five

Who Has Learned How

to Keep the Joy in Motherhood

and How You Can

Also new this year will

be a couple of mobile

boutiques, such as Coash

Clothing Company and

Three B’s Mobile Boutique.

LifeSource also will

be sponsoring blood and

bone marrow drives during

the expo. Appointments

may be made in

advance by calling (877)

Free gift bags also will

be given to the first 500

people through the doors.

UChicago Medicine Ingalls Memorial

helps nurse through knee replacement

Katherine Krol is a lady who

doesn’t have much time to put up

her feet. She keeps an eye on her

92-year-old mother and keeps in

touch with the activities of her

sister, her adult children and four

grandchildren regularly.

Recently widowed, Katherine

also works as a registered nurse.

So, when her right knee started

hurting nine years ago, she powered

through the pain and sought

some initial treatment, but the

pain returned and was soon intolerable.

“Every time I walked, I had

pain,” Katherine said.

It hurt to walk down the hallway

when her patients needed

something and when her grandkids

would say, ‘Nana, come do

this,’ she couldn’t.

A friend recommended Phil

Nigro, MD, an orthopedic surgeon

with offices in Tinley Park,

Flossmoor and Calumet City, all

affiliated with UChicago Medicine

Ingalls Memorial. Dr. Nigro

performed her friend’s knee

replacement and she loved his

bedside manner.

Dr. Nigro said Katherine’s

knee was bone-on-bone, meaning

the cartilage had completely

worn away between the bone

ends. Katherine was ready to get

the problem solved.

She had knee replacement surgery

in November, in a procedure

called kinematic alignment,

which Dr. Nigro brought into his

practice in the last two years. It

allows the knee joint bones to be

resurfaced without cutting ligaments

around the knee.

“This is a more natural knee

replacement that allows people

to recover more quickly,” Dr.

Nigro said.

Katherine went into surgery

prep at 7 a.m. and was back in

her room by 10 a.m. “They had

me up and walking at 2:30,” she

Dr. Nigro released Katherine

the next day. Though she wasn’t

able to host Thanksgiving, she

gave up her walker the very next

day, urged by her daughter.

“I needed that scolding,” she

said. “It was scary.”

The first day back at work

Katherine parked on the garage’s

second floor. She cringed, remembering

the pain she used

to have climbing the stairs. Not

anymore, though.

“It was so nice not to have any

pain,” she said.

Dr. Finkelstein provides estrogen-free vaginal restoration

To many women, natural is

We are buying more foods free

of chemicals and pesticides, skincare

products free of synthetic

fragrances and cleaning supplies

without phthalates. This belief

also translates to how women

care for themselves post-menopause.

Women are looking for

safe, natural ways to combat the

effects of their changing bodies.

For anyone who has been

through it, menopause has many

side effects. Some are commonly

discussed, such as hot flashes,

changes in mood and night

sweats. One of the most common

side effects isn’t being discussed

enough, and that is vaginal atrophy.

Vaginal atrophy is vaginal

dryness, itching, burning and

pain with intercourse. According

to the American Academy of

Family Physicians, up to 40 percent

of post-menopausal women

have atrophic vaginitis or vaginal

atrophy. With nearly 64 million

post-menopausal patients,

many women are suffering.

“These symptoms greatly impact

a woman’s quality of life,”

said Dr. Kenneth Finkelstein,

founder of Women’s Healthcare

of Illinois in Mokena and Evergreen

Park. “As someone who

has taken care of women for over

twenty years, I have watched

countless patients live with discomfort

and struggle with intimacy;

it’s unacceptable. Many

women don’t want to or cannot

use estrogen creams. Now there

is a natural, FDA-approved treatment

for vaginal atrophy.

Vaginal restoration performed

at Women’s Healthcare of Illinois,

is an estrogen-free treatment

for vaginal atrophy. Performed

in the office, without

the need for anesthesia and with

virtually no pain or side effects,

a gentle fractional CO2 laser restores

is less than five minutes.

“After living with vaginal atrophy

for nearly three decades

due to a hysterectomy with a

bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy,

(removal of the uterus, fallopian

tubes and ovaries) in my

mid 30s, I had all but given up

on pain-free intimacy with my

husband,” said Susan Schreffler,

a patient of Dr. Finkelstein.

“I have a history of breast cancer

in my family, and I decided

estrogen cream was not an option

for me. I only wanted a hormonefree

treatment. I had little to lose

and scheduled a free consultation

with Dr. Finkelstein. During

the appointment, Dr. Finkelstein

answered all my questions and

made me feel comfortable. I decided

to get my first treatment at

my consultation. I was amazed

by the results. After my first treatment

I felt relief. I have now

completed all three treatments

and I can say for the first time in

30 years I am not suffering from

vaginal atrophy.”

“Unlike hot flashes, insomnia

and night sweats, vaginal atrophy

remains after a women’s

transition through menopause is

complete. It is gratifying to offer

patients a natural, hormone-free

solution,” Dr. Finkelstein added.

TheraCORE Physical

Therapy seeks a personalized,

comforting patient experience

Do people know they have a choice

where they can attend physical therapy?

Doctors refer their patients every day to outpatient

physical therapy for musculoskeletal

injuries, aches and pains, balance deficits

and even vestibular issues. Most of the time

patients assume they have to go to the physical

therapist clinic in the doctor’s building

or the clinic closest to home. There is a wide

variety of care available from physicianowned

clinics to large corporate chains to

private physical therapist-owned clinics.

There is a choice! Choosing the right

physical therapist is critical to recovery.

It may be helpful to seek referrals from

friends or family members that have had

successful outcomes. Word of mouth referrals

are sometimes the best.

People should spend at least one hour a

visit with a physical therapist two to three

times per week. Personality is important!

People want a physical therapist with

whom they can clearly communicate, one

who spends quality time with them and

pushes them to achieve their goals. Feel

free to interview the physical therapist prior

to the first visit to see if you are a match.

Credentials are equally important.

Make sure a licensed physical therapist

is doing the treatment and use the same

therapist each visit to ensure quality care.

Many physical therapists can specialize

through continuing education in a variety

of services and can be board certified

in orthopedics, sports, and neurology, to

name a few. Always question what the

physical therapist’s experience level is

when it comes to a specific injury.

Ask what insurances are not only “accephysical

therapisted” but in-network

with the company. People should ask for

their benefits to be fully explained and

in writing before beginning treatment. If

one’s insurance has a high out-of-pocket

cost, ask if there are self-pay rates available.

People don’t want to be stuck with a

surprise bill.

Doing a little research before beginning

treatment can lead to a faster road to recovery

and a better overall outcome. Successful

physical therapy can help avoid surgery

and prevent future injury.

“It’s your physical therapy, it’s your

decision has” been our motto since we

opened 10 years ago. TheraCORE strives

to provide the best personalized experience

for our patients in an environment

that encourages overall wellness. The

next time physical therapy services are

needed, choose TheraCORE and let us

prove how we stand apart.

Jack Gibbons Gardens all about traditions, not trends

Jack Gibbons Gardens

does not follow trends.

Diners are not going

to witness Happy Hours

or Margarita Mondays at

Jack Gibbons.

That is because Jack

Gibbons focuses on what

really matters: great food

and even better company.

The restaurant reportedly

has customers who say

they have not been there

for 25-30 years but come

back and it is just the way

they remember it.

Jack Gibbons Gardens

— or Gibbons, as the

regulars call it — opened

in 1922 as a speakeasy.

Although times have

changed drastically since

then, the restaurant itself

has not. From the

red leather booths to the

wood-paneled walls, Jack

Gibbons is truly timeless.

In a time where chain

restaurants are on every

corner, Gibbons has become

even more special

and unique. From the second

a diner sits and is instantly

delivered delicious

warm bread, three-bean

salad and coleslaw, before

even a glance at the menu,

it is easy to know one is

about to have one of the

something to satisfy any

Gibbons has been described

as a “generational

place” that sees everyone

from grandfathers and fathers

to their grandchildren

who dine there.

A secret to that success

is that the restaurant’s staff

does not experience the

type of turnover seen in

some chain restaurants. Its
