Late-Night Parties
Each year, Sound City’s late-night parties are a highlight of the
weekend, attracting a wide range of people who are united
by the desire to keep going til the early hours. On Saturday,
Getintothis are hosting the official after-party at Hangar 34
with KING KHAN AND THE SHRINES. The Berlin-based band
have a sound that blends psych, funk and soul, which is the
perfect combination to keep the crowd going after a chaotic
Saturday. They’re joined by some of the most exciting bands
and artists on the current Liverpool circuit: KING HANNAH,
PALE RIDER and BEIJA FLO. If you prefer something heavier,
Abandon Silence are teaming up with Modu:lar to put on an
after hours party of techno and house at District with HARRY
SHEEHAN and NERRAM.
Hope University
Fine art students from LIVERPOOL HOPE UNIVERSITY
have joined forces with Sound City this year to help
design stage sets and projections at venues across
the site. This creative project reflects the longstanding
relationship between Sound City and Liverpool Hope
Fine Art School, as well as giving the festival a splash of
colour and vibrancy. The second-year students will be
putting their skills into practice at big and small capacity
venues. The result should be a great example of what
can be achieved when students and the local music
community work together.
Quiet Zones
At every music festival, chill-out areas are vital for when
you need a moment to rest and recharge away from the
busy crowds. One of the benefits of moving the festival
back to the city is how easy it will be to delve in and out
of the music – sometimes having a break from the noise is
what you need to get going again. Plus, you can catch up
with friends and absorb all the great live music you’ve seen.
This year’s designated quiet zones will be at Coffee and
Fandisha (Brick Street), the Botanical Gin Garden (New Bird
Street) and Cain’s Brewery Tap (Stanhope Street), which
are located right in the middle of the Baltic Triangle amongst
all the lively venues that make up Sound City.
Zandari Festa
Regular Sound City partner ZANDARI FESTA is South Korea’s largest music
showcase festival, which was established in 2012 and takes place in Seoul
every year. On Saturday, head to the Constellations Garden where Zandari
Festa will be bringing a taste of their festival to the heart of Liverpool. Gain
an insight into the varied music scene in South Korea with a programme that
covers indie rock, pop, folk, blues and jazz. Seoul-based DEAD BUTTONS will
return after playing the festival in 2014, along with alt-rock duo NATIONAL
PIGEON UNITY and the bluesier BILLY CARTER. We’re particularly excited
for GONNE CHOI, a singer-songwriter with a beautifully hypnotic voice. Her
unique sound has earned her recognition at a number of Korean music award
shows, and she has played at UK festivals including Glastonbury.
The Unusual Art Sourcing Company
THE UNUSUAL ART SOURCING COMPANY was named one of the best
events at Sound City 2017 so we’ve got high hopes for this year. Based
in the courtyard of the historic Cain’s Brewery, the art pop-up will host
life drawing, spoken word and poetry performances. Their main event will
be a modern and highly comical adaptation of Mozart’s Così Fan Tutte by
FLAT PACK MUSIC. Take a break from the indie bands that dominate the
line-up, and venture into a new genre of music. The hilarious storyline,
which involves fiancé swapping, means this is the perfect adaptation for
Opera newbies and lovers alike. You can also keep a lookout for pop-up
poet PADDY CLARKE, who will be roaming the festival throughout the
weekend.
Cain’s Brewery Village Courtyard – 05/05-06/05
Modern Sky
Head to District on Saturday where MODERN SKY RECORDS will be showcasing a number of up-and-coming
artists from their impressive roster. Manchester-based punk rock trio THE BLINDERS will be headlining the
showcase: the trio signed to Modern Sky last October and have since played with Peace and The Courteeners.
NO HOT ASHES will deliver an exciting blend of pop, disco and funk as part of their UK tour. Liverpool’s
SPINN – or the self-described “connoisseurs of jangly dream pop” – are playing earlier in the day and shouldn’t
be missed. They have just released their self-titled EP and are also in the middle of a UK tour.
Greg Wilson: Credit To The Edit
Celebrated DJ GREG WILSON has been charged with rounding off the
weekend in style with his official after-party at Hangar 34. It’s the bank
holiday, so there’s really no excuse for heading home early and missing
what promises to be another knockout evening from one of Merseyside’s
most celebrated DJs. Wilson will be launching Volume 3 of his Credit To
The Edit compilation series, and is joined by PEZA, DEREK KAYE and VJ
TRISTRAN BRADY-JACOBS. The night will go on until 5am, before we
all head home, recover and wait for next year to come around. Entry is
free with a festival wristband, or tickets can be bought separately.
