IT’S ALMOST POOL TIME!
HERE ARE TIPS FROM THE “SIMPLE STEPS SAVE LIVES” PROGRAM
1. Staying close, being alert and watching children in and around the pool
• Never leave a child unattended in a pool or spa and always watch your child
when he or she is in or near water
• Teach children basic water safety tips
• Keep children away from pool drains, pipes and other openings to avoid
entrapments
• Have a telephone close by when you or your family is using a pool or spa
• If a child is missing, look for him or her in the pool or spa first
• Share safety instructions with family, friends and neighbors
2. Learning and practicing water safety skills
• Learn how to swim and teach your child how to swim
• Learn to perform CPR on children and adults and update those skills regularly
• Understand the basics of life-saving so that you can assist in a pool emergency
3. Having appropriate equipment for your pool or spa
• Install a four-foot or taller fence around the pool and spa and use self-closing
and self latching
gates; ask your neighbors to do the same at their pools
• Install and use a lockable safety cover on your spa.
• If your house serves as a fourth side of a fence around a pool, install door
alarms and always use them. For additional protection, install window
guards on windows facing pools or spas.
• Install pool and gate alarms to alert you when children go near the water
• Ensure any pool and spa you use has compliant drain covers and ask your
pool service provider if you don’t know.
• Maintain pool and spa covers in good working order
• Consider using a surface wave or underwater alarm
KATY COMMUNITY ‘CHIP CLINIC’
May 5, 2018, 11 AM-2 PM
KCCC at Woof Gang Bakery & Grooming - Richmond
9711 S. Mason Rd, Richmond, Texas
Katy Community ‘Chip Clinic, a local non-profit, volunteer-run organization
is pleased to announce its spring schedule of upcoming events to serve the
needs of Katy-area residents. The organization offers $10 microchipping
for pets with FREE lifetime registration! What is a microchip? A microchip
is a rice-sized transponder that is injected between a pet’s shoulder
blades with a needle. When getting ‘chipped, most animals don’t notice
any difference from when receiving yearly vaccinations. A microchip does
NOT have a GPS locator on it, but as long as the account is kept up-todate,
its number will be linked to the pet owner’s contact information. The
microchip account is easily accessible online and pet owners can update
as needed and even add pet’s photo and veterinarian info.
Pet owners do not need to live in the same town as these upcoming events
to take advantage of this service, but PLEASE NOTE: cash only and MUST
bring rabies certification paperwork (not just the collar tag) - for volunteer
and attendee safety. There is a limit of two pets per family, unless preapproved.
Cats should be in a secure carrier and dogs should be on a noslip
leash (please no retractable leashes).
For more information on these events or to see the upcoming
calendar, please follow the group at: www.facebook.com/
SUMMER READING CLUBS “LIBRARIES ROCK!”
May 28 th -August 31 st
Fort Bend County Libraries presents special reading clubs during the
summer to encourage reading among readers of all ages. Library programs
and activities begin during the week of June 4 th and continue through July
28 th . There is no charge to join the Summer Reading Clubs (SRC) and they
are open to everyone, regardless of the county of residence. Participants
may register at any Fort Bend County library or they may register online
by going to the FBCL website (www.fortbend.lib.tx.us) and clicking on the
“SRC Sign-Up” image, which will become available on May 28 th . When the
online registration form has been completed, readers will then have their
own online page on which to record their books or reading time. Reading
rewards can be redeemed beginning Monday, June 4 th . Prizes must be
collected from the “primary library of use” that the reader indicated on
the registration form. The last day to pick up awards is September 1 st .
The Summer Reading Clubs are sponsored by Fort Bend County Libraries,
the Friends organizations that support the county library system and the
Collaborative Summer Library Program, a consortium of states working
together to provide high-quality children’s summer-reading program
materials for public libraries.
SUMMER READING CLUB FOR CHILDREN
Children from infancy through elementary school-age are invited to come
to the library to read a lot of great books, see some exciting programs
and join in some fun activities to kick off a great summer! Children are
encouraged to read as many books as they can and they will earn rewards
based on the total number of books they read or have read to them. For
the first five books read, the child will receive a bookmark. The rewards
continue with a certificate for 10 books, a pencil for 15 books and a reading
trophy for the first 20 books read. For every 20 books read, the participant’s
name will also be written on a picture of a drum to be displayed in that
branch library. The names of participants will be entered into a drawing
for gift cards from area stores - donated by the Friends of the Library
organizations - that will be awarded to several lucky readers of 20 books
or more, in a drawing scheduled in August at each library location.
MIDDLE SCHOOL SUMMER CHALLENGE
Area youth in grades 6-8 can participate in the SRC by logging online the
time they spend reading. Kids are encouraged to read as many books as
they can and they will earn rewards based on the total amount of time they
spend reading. For the first 10 hours (600 minutes) of reading, each reader
will receive a mystery prize. Upon completion of 20 hours (1,200 minutes)
of reading, readers will receive a trophy. The names of participants who
complete 20 or more hours of reading will be entered into a drawing for a
$25 gift card - donated by the Friends of the library - that will be awarded
to one lucky reader at each branch library in a drawing that will take place
in August.
SUMMER READING CLUB FOR TEENS & ADULTS
Adults of all ages, including young adults in high school, may participate
in the YA & Adult SRC by reading books and participating in optional
weekly “challenges” that can be completed individually at home online.
Completing the challenges will gain readers additional entries for the
drawings for an FBCL mobile power pack that will take place twice a
month in June and July at each branch library for readers who log in and
record their reading each week. All YA and adult readers who complete
the goal of reading five books will earn a dual highlighter/pen or a
geometric coloring bookmark. In addition, the names of participants who
complete at least five books will be entered into a drawing for a $25 gift
card - donated by the Friends of the library - that will be awarded to one
reader at each branch library in a drawing that will take place at the end
of July. An ultimate grand prize will be awarded to one lucky reader in
the library system. Participants in the YA/Adult Summer Reading Club who
How would you feel if you saved a kid’s life? StandUp For Kids is an all
volunteer organization dedicated to saving the lives of at-risk and
homeless kids through volunteer outreach efforts. Our volunteers search
the streets in order to find, stabilize and otherwise help homeless and
die on the streets from abuse, disease and suicide. According to recent
statistics Houston has up to 2,500 kids living on the streets at any given
time. Texas has the highest rate of homeless youth in the U.S.
StandUp For Kids needs supplies for our Houston program, which provides
food, clothing, counseling and a safe environment for the homeless
youth of Houston. If you or your organization would like to hold a food
or clothing drive for StandUp For Kids, please contact me at HeatherE@
standupforkids.org to learn more about StandUp For Kids or how you can
help, visit our website at www.standupforkids.org. The single greatest
need, for homeless and street kids is our continuous caring and real
support. We must convince them that we care, we want them back and we
want to help them get off the streets.
Memorial Day
Monday May 28, 2018
Memorial Day, as a formal holiday, is an American holiday. It is celebrated to remember military
service members who have died in the line of duty. Memorial Day was originally called Decoration
Day, as the holiday was centered on decorating the graves of those who had fallen in the Civil War.
HISTORY
There is much debate as to the location where Memorial Day originated from. Sometime during
the late years of the Civil War (1861-1865), groups began decorating the graves of their loved
ones who had died in battle. Depending on the source, there are perhaps over a dozen locations
that claim to be the town where the practice began being observed - the birthplace of Memorial
Day. Some of these towns include Columbus, Mississippi; Macon, Georgia; Richmond, Virginia;
Boalsburg, Pennsylvania and Carbondale, Illinois.
20
May 2018 | Fulshear Community Newsletter

There is evidence that the tradition could have started in towns in
either the North or the South. VA.gov states that on April 25, 1866, in
Columbus, Mississippi, a local group of women went to decorate the
graves of Confederate soldiers. They noticed barren graves of Union
soldiers and decided to place flowers there in remembrance. Another site,
usmemorialday.org, states that a hymn published in 1867 called “Kneel
Where Our Loved Ones are Sleeping” carried a dedication “To the Ladies
of the South who are Decorating the Graves of the Confederate Dead.”
Wikipedia says that by 1865 the practice was already widespread in the
North. It is likely that the tradition began in many locations independently,
with many variations on the same idea. Over time, as word spread, these
traditions could have expanded from town to town.
Arlington Cemetery
Washington DC
In 1866, in a town in New York called Waterloo, a drugstore owner
named Henry Welles suggested that the town shops close on May 5 th to
commemorate the soldiers buried at Waterloo Cemetery who had died
during the Civil War. Two years later in Waterloo, on May 5, 1868, General
John Logan issued a declaration that Decoration Day should be observed
nationwide. The declaration said that May 30 th would be designated as
a day to decorate the graves of “comrades who died in defense of their
country.” According to History.com, President James Garfield gave a
speech at Arlington National Cemetery on that day. In 1966, President
Lyndon Johnson and the Congress of the United States stated that
Waterloo was the official birthplace of Memorial Day and the official date
of origin was May 30, 1868.
In 1882, the name of the holiday was changed from Decoration Day to
Memorial Day. After World War I, the holiday was expanded to remember
soldiers from all American Wars. In 1971, Richard Nixon made Memorial
Day a national holiday that was to be celebrated on the last Monday in
May.
MEMORIAL DAY TODAY
Today Memorial Day is celebrated across the United States. Regardless of
where it originated, it is an important holiday that remembers those that
died for the country and serves to remind people of the costly price of war.
There are many formal ceremonies that take place in observance. Most
of these are held in local communities and can be found by contacting a
local Veterans of Foreign Wars office or local city government agency. A
few traditional events are listed below.
Laying of the wreath at Arlington Cemetery - Often, the President of
the United States will lay a wreath at Arlington Cemetery on the annual
observance of Memorial Day. This will usually be accompanied by a
speech.
Remembrance and Moments of Silence - People nationwide participate
in parades and still partake in decorating graves with wreaths or flowers.
Many people will pause for moments of silence in memoriam.
Movies to watch on Memorial Day
The Great Escape (1963) - Starring Steve McQueen, Charles Bronson,
James Garner
Heartbreak Ridge (1986) - Clint Eastwood
The Dirty Dozen (1967) - Ernest Borgnine, Charles Bronson
Saving Private Ryan (1998) - Tom Hanks, Matt Damon, Paul Giamatti
Warm weather means our gardens and landscapes are growing fast.
Here are some tasks to keep your landscape beautiful and productive:
Flowers: Time to plant summer blooming perennials and annuals
including plumbago, zinnias, angelonia, purslane, lobularia,
sunflowers, yellow bells, pride of Barbados, duranta and bat-faced
cuphea.
Vegetables: May is a great time to plant, from seed or nursery plants,
okra, sweet potatoes, cucumbers, winter squash, pumpkins, basil,
peppers, lima beans, eggplant, garlic chives and Malabar greens. If you
don’t want to dedicate an area of your yard, consider planting here and
there in your flowerbeds. Edible landscaping is a popular new trend!
Lawns: Water 1/2 to 1” of irrigation per week. A rain gauge or straight
sided container (such as a tuna fish can) will help you know how long to
run your irrigation system to apply 1/2”.
Weeding: Hand pull or hoe weeds while they are still young or better
yet, maintain a 3” layer of mulch in all vegetable and flowerbeds to
deter weeds from getting a start.
Pruning: Remove spent blooms on spring and summer annuals to
promote new blooms.
Fertilizing: Fertilize flowerbeds and vegetable gardens w/slow release
organic fertilizer.
Water: Deep soakings between rain events is better than frequent light
sprinkling.
Birds: Spring migration continues until mid-May. Clean bird feeders!
Replace water in bird baths to avoid creating mosquito breeding spots.
