Katy ISD Summer Band Camp
The sixteenth annual summer band camp, offered to next year’s 7 th ,
8 th and 9 th grade KISD band students, will be held at Tompkins High
School from July 16 th to July 20 th . The camp will include daily section
rehearsals, full band rehearsals and fun music-based electives. Lunch is
also part of the camp. The cost of the camp is $130 and will include a
t-shirt if registered by June 5 th . All registrations after that date will need
to include a late registration fee of $25 totaling $155. Any registration
request after June 29 th must be sent via email and if approved, payment
MUST BE either cash, money order or cashier’s check.
The camp concludes with the Grand Finale Concert on Friday morning
at 9 AM. After the concert, those students wishing to extend the fun a
little longer can join in the group’s optional trip to Typhoon Texas for an
additional $35 (park admission, meal, bus transportation and drinks are
included in price) for a total camp cost of $165 ($190 after June 5 th ). The
KISD JH Summer Band Camp has been a huge success each year and we
anticipate a large enrollment again this year.
Camp participants will audition for summer band camp placement as
soon as they arrive for the first day of camp. Students should prepare
major scales specific to the student’s instrument and an audition etude
which can be downloaded from the webpage below. Students will be
ability grouped with the number of bands being determined by total
enrollment for the camp. Registration Form, Audition materials and
6
Travel/Emergency Treatment Consent Form can be downloaded by
campers from the Katy ISD Fine Arts Webpage www.katyisd.org/dept/
finearts. An email confirmation is sent out upon receipt of registration
and follow up reminders from the camp coordinator will be sent before
the camp begins, so make sure your email address is clearly printed on
the registration form.
The camp provides an economical and convenient alternative to those
who may not have had a chance to attend another band camp over the
summer due to scheduling and/or costs. Participants will receive top
quality instruction on their instruments from our own great KISD and
Houston area Band Directors. Join us for the sixteenth annual Katy ISD
Junior High Summer Band Camp and keep your playing skills sharp for
the year! Camp brochures, with the registration form, will be distributed
to KISD band students by their schools’ directors. Camp brochures can
also be downloaded from the Katy ISD Fine Arts webpage above. Plan to
register early in order to guarantee a spot! Again, registrations requests
made after June 29 th will need to follow special instructions outlined
earlier. If you have already registered and have not received your
confirmation email, contact kisdbandcamp2018@gmail.com to make
sure your registration has been received.
2018-2019 Transportation Model
And Bell Schedule
After careful consideration and review of feedback from 20,000 parents
and community members, the Board of Trustees approved a change to
the 2018-19 Katy ISD transportation model at the February 26 th Regular
Board Meeting.
Beginning this fall, Katy ISD campuses will transition to a multi-bell
schedule. However, criteria for transportation eligibility will remain the
same. Elementary students residing outside of a ½-mile radius of their
school and secondary students outside of a 1-mile radius, will continue
to be eligible for transportation services.
May 2018 | Katy Communicator

The 2018-19 transportation model will include four groups that will begin
and dismiss at different times of the school day. Elementary campuses
will be divided in two groups. Elementary Group 1 will begin school at 8
AM and dismiss at 3:20 PM and Elementary Group 2 will begin at 8:20 AM
and dismiss at 3:40 PM. All junior high campuses will begin at 8:45 AM and
dismiss at 3:55 PM. High school start and dismissal times (7:25 AM - 2:35
PM) will remain unchanged.
Katy ISD’s Transportation Department established routes and pairing
elementary schools to determine which campuses will be included in
Elementary Group 1 and Elementary Group 2. Information on the start
and end times for each elementary campus was presented to the Board
of Trustees at the Regular Meeting on April 23, 2018.
We greatly appreciate the guidance of our parents and community as the
2018-19 model was developed over these past few months. This model
will allow the District to provide the same level of service to families in
2018-19 while enabling us to utilize our drivers more efficiently, as well
as address safety concerns in areas of the District that are becoming
increasingly congested.
Katy ISD Announces Kickoff of
Bond 2017 Construction
Residents Voted For It.
Now It’ Is Time To Build It!!
Katy Independent School District is kicking off the construction of its
2017 bond projects. The community is now invited to witness the process
every step of the way through its newly designed, Build the Legacy
website. In it, the public can obtain project information, see designs,
track the status of construction and witness the progress of various
projects as they advance.
“I’m excited to see each project come to fruition for our students and
staff at Katy ISD,” said Lance Hindt, Superintendent of Katy ISD. “The
future is being built right before our eyes and we couldn’t have done it
without our community.”
The voter-approved $609.2 MM bond includes six new schools (one high
school, two junior highs and three elementary schools). Additionally, it
also covered a comprehensive renovation to Fielder Elementary School
and some much-needed improvements to 61 of our campuses. Ninetyone
(91%) of the bond is for school facilities and 9% is for technology and
infrastructure such as buses, portables and storage tank replacements.
A Community Bond Advisory Committee, which consisted of parents,
students, community leaders, representatives of faith-based
organizations and business owners dedicated several months to
analyzing a facilities plan for the district.
Katy ISD is considered the second fastest growing school district in Texas
and was recently recognized by Niche, a ranking and review organization
for K-12 schools, as the best school district in the Houston Metro Area.
Katy Community ‘Chip Clinic’
May 5, 2018, 11 AM-2 PM
KCCC at Woof Gang Bakery & Grooming - Richmond
9711 S. Mason Rd, Richmond, Texas
Katy Community ‘Chip Clinic, a local non-profit, volunteer-run
organization is pleased to announce its spring schedule of upcoming
events to serve the needs of Katy-area residents. The organization
offers $10 microchipping for pets with FREE lifetime registration! What
is a microchip? A microchip is a rice-sized transponder that is injected
between a pet’s shoulder blades with a needle. When getting ‘chipped,
most animals don’t notice any difference from when receiving yearly
vaccinations. A microchip does NOT have a GPS locator on it, but as long
as the account is kept up-to-date, its number will be linked to the pet
owner’s contact information. The microchip account is easily accessible
online and pet owners can update as needed and even add pet’s photo
and veterinarian info. Pet owners do not need to live in the same town
as these upcoming events to take advantage of this service, but PLEASE
NOTE: cash only and MUST bring rabies certification paperwork (not just
the collar tag) - for volunteer and attendee safety. There is a limit of two
pets per family, unless pre-approved. Cats should be in a secure carrier
and dogs should be on a no-slip leash (please no retractable leashes). For
more information on these events or to see the upcoming calendar, please
SUMMER READING CLUBS “Libraries Rock!”
May 28 th -August 31 st
Fort Bend County Libraries presents special reading clubs during
the summer to encourage reading among readers of all ages. Library
programs and activities begin during the week of June 4 th and continue
through July 28 th . There is no charge to join the Summer Reading
Clubs (SRC) and they are open to everyone, regardless of the county of
residence. Participants may register at any Fort Bend County library or
they may register online by going to the FBCL website (www.fortbend.
lib.tx.us) and clicking on the “SRC Sign-Up” image, which will become
available on May 28 th . When the online registration form has been
completed, readers will then have their own online page on which to
record their books or reading time. Reading rewards can be redeemed
beginning Monday, June 4 th . Prizes must be collected from the “primary
library of use” that the reader indicated on the registration form. The last
day to pick up awards is September 1 st . The Summer Reading Clubs are
sponsored by Fort Bend County Libraries, the Friends organizations that
support the county library system and the Collaborative Summer Library
Program, a consortium of states working together to provide high-quality
children’s summer-reading program materials for public libraries.
SUMMER READING CLUB FOR CHILDREN
Children from infancy through elementary school-age are invited to
come to the library to read a lot of great books, see some exciting
programs and join in some fun activities to kick off a great summer!
Children are encouraged to read as many books as they can and they
will earn rewards based on the total number of books they read or
have read to them. For the first five books read, the child will receive a
bookmark. The rewards continue with a certificate for 10 books, a pencil
for 15 books and a reading trophy for the first 20 books read. For every
20 books read, the participant’s name will also be written on a picture of
a drum to be displayed in that branch library. The names of participants
will be entered into a drawing for gift cards from area stores - donated by
the Friends of the Library organizations - that will be awarded to several
lucky readers of 20 books or more, in a drawing scheduled in August at
each library location.
MIDDLE SCHOOL SUMMER CHALLENGE
Area youth in grades 6-8 can participate in the SRC by logging online the
time they spend reading. Kids are encouraged to read as many books
as they can and they will earn rewards based on the total amount of
time they spend reading. For the first 10 hours (600 minutes) of reading,
each reader will receive a mystery prize. Upon completion of 20 hours
(1,200 minutes) of reading, readers will receive a trophy. The names of
participants who complete 20 or more hours of reading will be entered
into a drawing for a $25 gift card - donated by the Friends of the library
- that will be awarded to one lucky reader at each branch library in a
drawing that will take place in August.
SUMMER READING CLUB FOR TEENS & ADULTS
Adults of all ages, including young adults in high school, may participate in
the YA & Adult SRC by reading books and participating in optional weekly
“challenges” that can be completed individually at home online. Completing
the challenges will gain readers additional entries for the drawings for an
FBCL mobile power pack that will take place twice a month in June and
July at each branch library for readers who log in and record their reading
each week. All YA and adult readers who complete the goal of reading five
books will earn a dual highlighter/pen or a geometric coloring bookmark.
In addition, the names of participants who complete at least five books will
be entered into a drawing for a $25 gift card - donated by the Friends of
the library - that will be awarded to one reader at each branch library in a
drawing that will take place at the end of July. An ultimate grand prize will
be awarded to one lucky reader in the library system. Participants in the
YA/Adult Summer Reading Club who complete the program by reading five
books will be entered into a drawing for a 16 GB Fire HD 8 tablet with a red
GARDENING TIPS FOR MAY
Warm weather means our gardens and landscapes are growing
fast. Here are some tasks to keep your landscape beautiful and
productive:
Flowers: Time to plant summer blooming perennials and annuals
including plumbago, zinnias, angelonia, purslane, lobularia, sunflowers,
yellow bells, pride of Barbados, duranta and bat-faced cuphea.
Vegetables: May is a great time to plant, from seed or nursery plants,
okra, sweet potatoes, cucumbers, winter squash, pumpkins, basil,
peppers, lima beans, eggplant, garlic chives and Malabar greens. If
you don’t want to dedicate an area of your yard, consider planting
here and there in your flowerbeds. Edible landscaping is a popular
new trend!
Lawns: Water 1/2 to 1” of irrigation per week. A rain gauge or straight
sided container (such as a tuna fish can) will help you know how long
to run your irrigation system to apply 1/2”.
Weeding: Hand pull or hoe weeds while they are still young or better
yet, maintain a 3” layer of mulch in all vegetable and flowerbeds to
deter weeds from getting a start.
Pruning: Remove spent blooms on spring and summer annuals to
promote new blooms.
Fertilizing: Fertilize flowerbeds and vegetable gardens w/slow
release organic fertilizer.
Water: Deep soakings between rain events is better than frequent
light sprinkling.
Birds: Spring migration continues until mid-May. Clean bird feeders!
Replace water in bird baths to avoid creating mosquito breeding
spots.
