The Dish
City Barbeque pairs good eats, good causes
Jacquelyn Schlabach
Assistant Editor
Humphrey the pig, named
after Orland Park’s very first
mayor, sits on the ledge near
the checkout line of City
Barbeque as customers make
their selection of authentic,
smoked in-house meats.
Throughout the recently
opened joint, as employees
prefer to call it, local residents
will notice items and
memorabilia that pay homage
to Orland Park. A staple
of City Barbeque is showcasing
hometown pride,
as well as supporting local
charities and schools.
“One of the things we try
to do when we come in to a
new market, we don’t want
to be just another City Barbeque,
another of the same,
this is Orland Park’s City
Barbeque, and they’ll get
very involved in the community,
and we get involved in
lots of charities and do lots of
things like that,” said Frank
Pizzo, director of training
and one of the founders of
City Barbeque.
City Barbeque was to
celebrate its grand opening
April 23 and planned to
make its mark on the community.
Each day during the
first week of business, it was
to partner with a local charity
to donate 25 percent of all
sales from that day back to
the organization. On Thursday,
April 26, proceeds were
to go to the Sertoma Centre.
On Friday, April 27, Veteran
Voices was to be the
selected charity, and on Saturday,
April 28, Baseball 4
All will be given 10 percent
of proceeds. City Barbeque
has committed to donating
a minimum of $500 to each
charity, in addition to the 25
percent proceeds they will
receive.
“It’s the right thing to
do,” Pizzo said. “It’s been
that way from Day 1.”
All 36 City Barbeque locations
around the country
aim to donate a portion of
their proceeds to one local
charity a week, explained
Regional Marketing Manager
Carolyn Diana.
“We want to be a part
of the community,” Diana
said.
In addition to donating to
local charities, every City
Barbeque partners with a
food rescue program to donate
the leftovers instead of
throwing them away. City
Barbeque in Orland Park
will be giving its food to All
God’s People, which will
come pick up the food twice
a week.
“Our whole goal, our purpose
for being, everyone in
the company is to serve and
create happiness,” Pizzo said.
Photographs of Orland
Park throughout the years
are hung on the wall, Sandburg
and St. Michael School
jerseys hang proudly in the
City Barbeque’s More Cowbell sandwich ($8.29) is a
customer favorite featuring smoked brisket topped
with peppers, onions, smoked provolone and creamy
horseradish sauce. Thomas Czaja/22nd Century Media
back of the joint, and Sandburg
art students even handpainted
the paper towel
holders that sit on every
table — all in an effort to
make this City Barbeque
unique to Orland Park.
Not only will the community
atmosphere bring
customers to the joint; the
selection of smoked inhouse
meats certainly will,
too. Everything on the menu
is made from scratch in the
kitchen.
“[Orland Park] is an exciting
area,” Pizzo said. “It
looked like an area that we
would fit in.”
The Orland Park location
is the second to open in the
Chicago market, with six
total joints to be opened by
the end of the year.
