Raelyn Roberson. She won
the 100 and the long jump,
placed second in the 200,
and nearly caught Bendery
at the finish as the anchor
leg runner for the Titans’
800 relay team.
Roberson’s long jump of
17-8 was more than a foot
ahead of the field, but then
she wasn’t measuring herself
against the field.
“I was hoping to jump
eighteen (feet),” she said.
“But it’s a little harder to
warm up when it’s cold like
this. I’m thinking I’ll perform
better in a month just
because it will be a little
warmer.”
Roberson’s performance
in multiple events was no
surprise to coach Anthony
Griffith.
“She’s strong at all of it,”
he said. “The only thing
she doesn’t do for us is the
4x100 just because of the
other things she’s doing.
She qualified (downstate)
for the 100 and long jump
last year and we think she
can add the 200 this year.”
The Titans’ Annie Streb
won the triple jump with
a leap of 34-6, a full two
feet ahead of the field, and
teammate Taylor Ozimek
won the high jump.
“I cleared 5-2 and I just
barely didn’t get over 5-4,”
Ozimek said. “I feel really
good, since 5-2 is the statequalifying
(height) so I’m
basically there.
“All of us are doing better
in everything this year.
We’re getting stronger and
our PRs have gone up so I
think it will be an even better
year for us.”
Ozimek, Streb, Roberson,
and Kate Snively
made up the second-place
relay team in the 4x200.
The Titans also got seconds
from Edwards in the 1600,
Rachel Meyer in the discus,
and Kathleen Bock in the
300 hurdles.
South’s relay team of
Elizabeth Shaw, Emily
Galante, Bridget Wall, and
Claire Williams placed
third in the 4x800.
“So far, so good,”
Griffith said. “The girls are
getting some good work in
and it’s all about the progress.
We’re doing what we
expected to do so far.”
Athlete of the Week
10 Questions
with Drake Johnson
The Loyola senior is a
member of the boys volleyball
team.
When did you start
playing volleyball and
why?
I started playing volleyball
in 8th grade, because
it was the first year my
grade school had a volleyball
team, after that I was
instantly hooked to playing
and decided to continue
playing high school
after breaking my knee in
football freshman year.
What’s your favorite
part about your sport?
My favorite part about
volleyball is getting big
kills and blocks which get
the entire team hyped up.
Do you have any
superstitions before,
during or after a
game?
Our team has a tradition
of wearing the same color
jersey if we are on a winning
streak.
What’s one thing
people don’t know
about you?
I am very passionate
about architecture and I
plan to pursue it as a career.
If you could travel
anywhere in the
world, where would it
be and why?
I would go to Australia
and to the Great Barrier
Reef because I love coral
and fish.
What’s the best part
about being a Loyola
athlete?
Playing a varsity sport
for one of the top athletic
schools in the state.
What’s the hardest
part about your sport?
The hardest part of
playing volleyball is having
good energy in tough
situations when we are
losing.
If you had one super
power, what would it
be and why?
If I had one super power
I would want to have the
ability to stop time because
no matter what the
situation is, if everything
is frozen except you, you
22nd Century Media File Photo
will always have the upper
hand.
What has been your
favorite moment at
Loyola? (Athletics or
otherwise)
My favorite part of
Loyola was playing GBS
in the regional championship
last year because a
lot of my friends were on
GBS and a lot of fans were
there. The game was also
very high energy and high
intensity.
What’s the best advice
you’ve ever gotten
and who was it from?
My mom always tells
me, “That what doesn’t
kill you, only makes you
stronger.” I remember this
because it encourages me
to go the extra mile in everything
I do.
