Trevians senior
girls soccer
player scored
four goals in two
at the Naperville
week. The Trevians
easily won both
2. Addison Bendery.
The Loyola junior
runner was part
of the winning
800-meter relay
team and won the
200-meter dash
at the Glenbrook
South Titan Invite.
The Ramblers
finished second in
their first outdoor
This year’s spring has
played a toll on almost every
team in the area’s season,
forcing the postponement
and cancellation of
multiple games.
That wasn’t the case
April 17 when New Trier
traveled to Glenview to
play Glenbrook South in
a key Central Suburban
League South matchup.
The Trevians came away
with the 3-0 win in below
30-degree weather, staying
undefeated in conference
play.
“I thought we played
great,” New Trier coach
Jim Burnside said. “I think
the girls are starting to
find their rhythm and they
know how to play soccer,
but now they’re learning
how to play soccer together.
It’s been hard with the
weather.”
Coming off of two ties
that prevented them from
making it out of pool play
in the Lou Malnati’s Deep
Dish Classic, the Trevians
knew getting off to a fast
start was key to a possible
win.
“It’s definitely important
to get that first goal because
it gives us momentum,”
New Trier’s Lily
Conley said. “It changes
the dynamic we have for
the rest of the game.”
Teammate Emma
Weaver, who would finish
New Trier’s Caroline Iserloth (5) battles Glenbrook South’s Katie Weiss (24) for the
ball April 17, in Glenview. Michael Wojtychiw/22nd Century Media
the game with two goals,
agreed with Conley.
“Our main goal was
to come out with a lot of
energy and get on top of
them quickly,” she said.
“We knew we had to play
our game, so getting in
behind them with Nicole
(Kaspi) and Fallon (Warshauer),
because they had
dynamic runs and they had
five in the back. Trying
to play through Whitney
(Hoban), playing through
the midfield, that was also
one of the goals.”
After nearly scoring in
the game’s first minute,
New Trier (6-0-2, 2-0
CSL) got on the board
at the 32:54 mark when
Whitney Hoban put a ball
in from about 30 yards out
that snuck past the outstretched
arms of Glenbrook
South goalie Libbie
Vanderveen.
The Trevians couldn’t
sit back however, as the
Titans threatened about 30
seconds later on a shot that
was cleared by the visitors
defense.
“The effort was there,
execution was not,” Glenbrook
South coach Seong
Ha said. “New Trier’s
midfield was fantastic
throughout, all three goals
came from the midfield. If
we contain the midfield, I
thought we could win this
game.
“The one thing I liked
in the first half was we
were really getting in from
the flank. It was really, really
promising but again we
miss a shot by Ellie Flowers
on the back post and is it a
moment changer? Probably,
but you still had another 50,
60 minutes to play.”
After that though, New
Trier controlled much of
the play for the rest of the
half, allowing only two
more shots.
Glenbrook South’s best
chance in the second half
came at the 22:11 mark,
when a perfect cross
caught the New Trier
goalie out of position but
was just a tad too far for
a Glenbrook South offensive
player to reach and
put into the goal.
Weaver scored the first
of her goals at the 12:33
mark, giving the Trevians
a 2-0 lead and then added
her second 1 minute, 5 seconds
later to finish out the
scoring.
“Nicole (Kaspi) was
dribbling down the right
wing and she got to the end
line, which is something
we work on in practice,”
Weaver said. “I saw that she
turned her back and I came
running. She really did all
the work and laid a perfect
ball back and I just rightfooted
it in the corner.”
GBS was coming off of
a championship-game victory
in the Lou Malnati’s
Deep dish classic and
looking to continue its undefeated
run but it wasn’t
to be.
“We’ve scored zero tonight,
one, one and one,
the last four matches,” Ha
said. “When you have .75
goals for, puck luck is going
to run out of time for
you and the soccer gods
will probably say it’s just
not your night.
“If we meet them again
it will most likely be in the
sectional, if we’re lucky
enough to get that far, and
I told the girls it’s like
the NCAA Tournament.
There’s a lot of good teams
and nobody is going to be
an easy out.”
Listen Up
“It’s definitely important to get that first goal
because it gives us momentum.”
