FIRE DEPARTMENT 28<br />
The Fire Department mission is to protect life, quality <strong>of</strong> life, and property from the<br />
effects <strong>of</strong> fire, accidents, hazardous materials and natural disasters<br />
<strong>2011</strong> <strong>Highlights</strong><br />

� A fire in the Downtown Manor at 4th Avenue and<br />
Athol Street resulted in a total loss <strong>of</strong> that structure,<br />
and the displacement <strong>of</strong> 26 families. This incident<br />
taxed our firefighting resources as well as the<br />
emergency support network in providing shelter and<br />
relocation assistance for displaced tenants.<br />
� Assisted the <strong>Alberni</strong> Clayoquot Regional District in<br />
developing and funding a Regional Fire Services<br />
Coordinator position. It is anticipated that the<br />
Coordinator will facilitate and guide participating fire<br />
departments toward providing fire protection<br />
services in a cooperative and sustainable manner.<br />
� Replaced Rescue Unit #17 with new Rescue #8<br />
� Third party review <strong>of</strong> the Fire Department’s<br />
structure and operations was completed by Dugal<br />
Smith and Associates.<br />

Medical 1 st Responder coverage supplementing the BC<br />
Ambulance Service<br />
Structural High Angle Technical Rope Rescue Service<br />
Confined Space Rescue Service<br />
Hazardous Material Spill response<br />
Fire Prevention, Inspection, Education & Code enforcement<br />
Contract Fire Suppression to two First Nations Reserves<br />
Emergency Preparedness Planning including Tsunami<br />
Warning System<br />
