Vibrant. Healthy. United. 4 2011 SUCCESSES AND ACHIEVEMENTS Here’s a quick snapshot of some of our successes in meeting the service needs of the community, improving the quality of life and becoming more sustainable. Partnerships Partnership and collaboration are a key part of our City’s history and they remain integral to building a united and vibrant community today. In 2011 the City worked closely with the Port Alberni Port Authority to assist with their funding applications for significant upgrades to the Fisherman’s Harbour Marina and Harbour Quay. The result was funding approval of $3.5 M from the Island Coastal Economic Trust which brought the total investment to $7.5 M. Sustainability The City continues to take measurable steps towards reducing our impact on the environment. The Wood Avenue interceptor project completed in 2011 diverts storm water from the combined sewer line thus reducing the discharge of combined sewer water into our delicate marine ecosystem. Vibrant Economy Opportunities come in all sorts; in this case it was a sort. The City of Port Alberni worked with Western Forest Products to identify land for a dryland log sort that keeps local logs and jobs here in Port Alberni. Success is attributed to the partnership between the City, Western Forest Products, the United Steelworkers Union Local 1-85 and a host of contractors. Improved Quality of Life The City of Port Alberni is well known for our parks and public spaces. In 2011 a neighborhood came together to make a local park better for young children and families. The City and whole community joined this effort and together built a fantastic playground that promotes physical activity, community connectivity and safe opportunities for kids to play. Safe & Healthy Community The City of Port Alberni is proud to support the reopening of the Community Policing Office at the Harbour Quay. By bringing together volunteer groups and the RCMP in an accessible location we’re supporting the local community in delivering programs and information that make our community a safer and healthier place to live. MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR – John Douglas 5 On behalf of my colleagues on City Council, I am proud to present the 2011 Annual Municipal Report for the City of Port Alberni. This report provides a valuable snapshot of our annual operations, objectives and achievements. 2011 brought the beginning of a new Council term for which I was elected Mayor along with three new Councillors to the team: Rob Cole, Wendy Kerr and Dan Washington. These three were joined by returning Council members Jack McLeman, Cindy Solda and Hira Chopra. I want to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of all of my fellow Councillors. During 2011 our City continued to face significant economic challenges which reinforced the need to stay squarely focused on our vision and strategic plan. I commend not only our current Council but past as well for their prudent decisions and fiscal responsibility. These difficult decisions were reflected in Council’s continued action to reduce our reliance on industrial taxation. Moving forward with this has challenged our community but I know we are on the right path towards increased fiscal and economic stability. Even though we faced challenges, 2011 saw some incredible achievements for the City and the entire Alberni Valley community. After a community wide effort we were triumphantly crowned ‘The Ultimate Fishing Town’ by the World Fishing Network. This affirmed just how unique and special our marine ecosystem is and the deep connection we all share with it. 2011 also saw the completion of a brand new Visitor’s Centre, the Pacific Coast University campus and the start of a significant upgrade to the Alberni Harbour Quay and Fisherman’s Harbour. I am proud of our cooperation with the Port Alberni Port Authority in assisting them in achieving this $7.5 M upgrade. These initiatives have certainly set the stage for continued growth of our promising tourism and education sectors. We are now focused on an additional highway route to the east side of Vancouver Island and further cooperation with the Port Authority to increase our involvement in international trade. With these and countless other burgeoning opportunities I am very optimistic about our future. However, we all have an important role to play in being the most vibrant, healthy and united community in British Columbia. I would like to take this opportunity to personally thank and acknowledge the entire City staff who continues to demonstrate their commitment to our vision, values and the services we provide. I also want to thank the countless residents that contribute their time and resources to bettering our community. I am honored to represent Port Alberni as Mayor and I welcome the opportunity to talk with you about our City and the challenges and opportunities ahead of us.
